Report: Cleveland repeatedly tried to get Trent Williams, Washington repeatedly said no

Cleveland General Manager John Dorsey hinted this week that he’s been trying to trade for Washington’s holdout left tackle Trent Williams. Those attempts have apparently been ongoing all season.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports that Dorsey has been reaching out to Washington every week, all season long, in an attempt to land Williams. But Washington isn’t interested.

According to the report, Washington has indicated that Williams could be traded during the offseason, but he’s not going anywhere this season.

If that’s the stance from owner Dan Snyder and team president Bruce Allen, it doesn’t make a lot of sense. Williams has made clear that he’s done playing in Washington because he doesn’t trust the team’s medical staff. And even if Williams were to change his mind and return, Washington is going nowhere this season. If they get a good trade offer for Williams from some team that’s desperate to add a left tackle, why not take it now? In the offseason, teams will have more left tackles to choose from, either in free agency or in the draft, and may not be willing to give up as much to get Williams.

But just because it doesn’t make sense doesn’t mean Washington isn’t doing it. It appears that the standstill will continue, and Williams won’t play this year.

  1. That would require a certain intelligence level within the organization that has yet to be displayed and the team’s success has reflected that.

  2. The owner of the Redskins is being vindictive and egotistical This isn’t about Trent Williams wanting more money or a contract extension He simply doesn’t trust the Redskins and doesn’t want to play on there team.Instead of getting a first round pick and helping the team to rebuild There basically saying will show you who’s Boss.

  3. Snyder is just playing “Screw the player” he is holding onto him just because it will hurt him in the pocket if he is made to wait until the off season” Just playing a game of who is the biggest dog in the pack. There needs to be a clause that for every game a player holds out they don’t get paid, if it goes on for so long the player gets released from the NFL and if they go to another team that team would have to give up draft choices according to the talent, OR a pick of a willing player from the team. something like that. this holding out crap is getting old and it is only going to get worse! Players sigh they need to play it out. If they have a grievance then the League needs to step in and take charge.

  4. And this is just another small example of why the Washington Franchise continues to be so woefully incompetent.

No championships since the ’91 season and on a perpetual road to nowhere.

Take a bow, Mr. Synder. You are the worst owner in all of American professional sports.

  5. Man I do feel sorry for Redskin fans. This franchise is dysfunctional. I’m sure there attendance is down as well, but correct me if I’m wrong.

  6. Can you believe John Gruden has looked like a HOF GM thus far compared to Redskins do all Bruce Allen? Why cant the NFL force Snyder to sell? It’s obvious he lets an idiot Allen do whatever he wants and is just sitting on his asset (an NFL team) while holding all Skin fans hostage. The ineptness is obvious and it’s time to put the heat on to get Dan out of the fraternity.

  7. -Dan Snyder is worth Billions – heck, the lousy Skins are worth around 3 Billion.

-Trent Williams has earned more than 100 Million playing football.

If you don’t see the theme here, the only people who care about these things are fans.

  8. Until you hear what was offered or if countered, there is no way to know which, or if either team, is making error. Until the trade deadline passes, that is……If they hold onto him beyond that, then Washington takes a huge hit on the scales of normalcy.

I still think he will be traded before deadline. We will know shortly.

  9. The Bangles owner refused to trade Carson Palmer, even though Palmer said he would not play for the team as long as Marvin Lewis was the head coach. Eventually Palmer was traded to the Cardinals.

  10. Skins could easily get 3-4 draft picks for Williams, 2 of them being first round picks most likely, yet Snyder is so stubborn and selfish. The season is lost and Trent said in May basically he was done with the Skins.

You could Draft your LT of the future and 2 other studs in the upcoming draft and actually build a team around Haskins (because Allen isnt gonna let the new head coach draft the QB he wants.) Its a shame because the Skins actually have some nice young pieces on offense and just need to fill a few holes on defense and they could be competitive in their division. But Snyder and Allen combo are gonna be a cancer on that team until one or both are gone.

  11. Free Trent Williams!
Redskins need to follow the dolphins trade everyone and tank, tank, tank for the high pick. Danny and Bruce done get it.

  12. The way I see it is that Washington has a price tag on Williams. Dorsey keeps trying to haggle, but “the price is the price”

But that that would make too much sense for Bruce Allen– who knows what’s going on here.

  13. I think Keenan and Kel could do a better job running a franchise than Snyder and Allen.

Williams only has a few years left. Get something of value for him and move the heck on. It’s not like the Skins are going to be playing for OR winning ANYTHING anytime soon.

Wise man often says: You can’t fix stupid.

  14. Don’t expect DC to be making any sane decisions going forward, clearly they want to tank so just let them tank. If I was a DC fan however I would highly suggest not going to games the rest of the season, if you want to send a message to Snyder than money (or lack thereof as the case could be) will speak louder to him than words.

  15. Washington is keeping a healthy Trent Williams who refuses to play for them in order to…….?????

  16. Snyderman, Snyderman,
    Screws up everything Snyder can.
    Lets his buddies run amok,
    Fields a team of perma-suck.
Look out, here comes the Snyderman.

    Is he smart? Listen, bud.
QB’s touch down with a thud.
    Can he heal broken legs?
    Snyderskins are this year’s dregs.

Out on FedEx field, at the scene of the crime,
Snyder smiles and nods and says “This is fine…”

    Snyderman, Snyderman, lousiest neighbor Snyderman,
Wealth and fame he desires, will not change till he retires.
Look out, here comes the Snyderman!

  17. Why trade him mid-season when his value is optimal? Better to wait until he has been out of football a year, and after the 2020 draft. This way Snyder can be sure to get pennies on the dollar.LOL

Ahhh the Redskins…. consistently the worst managed professional sports team on the planet. HAIL!

  18. These pro sports teams need to say this to these players who hold out for whatever reason:
“Nobody forced you to sign that contract. You signed it willingly and in sound mind. You’ll play for us or you won’t play. Again. Ever. Period.” Then back it up by placing the player on the Reserve-Left Team or the Reserve-Retired list.
See how fast the “holdouts”would end.
I get that these players are trying to gain leverage the only way they can now by withdrawing their services but if you aren’t happy with the CBA, then negotiate better terms in the next one.

  19. To those suggesting the Skins are going to get 2 1st round draft picks because “that’s the going price” just aren’t being realistic. Tunsil is 25, William’s is 31. Joe Thomas was an ultimate iron man in the NFL before he blew his tricep at 32, so past Pro Bowl accolades aren’t the driving force behind the price point. How many more can he provide moving forward? Trent has value no doubt, but I fear the Skins won’t get enough to swallow their pride.

  20. It is very understandable working with basket cases like Bruce Allen and Dan Snyder. Really do not blame him. Yeah as really class went out when they came on board. Just hope Trent gets his wish.

  21. “The Bangles owner refused to trade Carson Palmer, even though Palmer
said he would not play for the team as long as Marvin Lewis was the head coach.”

    That’s not why.

Palmer didn’t want to deal with
the diminished ability/incessant chatter of chad ochojohnson
and me-first, alligator armed terrell owens (his final nfl season).

It was all about Bengals owner mike brown.

  22. And you wonder why Washington is such a pathetic franchise. Williams is a commodity, and he’s not worth anything to them if he won’t play for them.

The team has tried to wait him out, and that hasn’t worked, time to get what you can for him and move on.

Am I really the only one to point out that Palmer was traded to the RAIDERS?

  24. this makes perfect sense for dan snyder – he’s vindictive as heck. see snyder + coles:

Redskins owner Daniel Snyder threatened Coles when the receiver’s refusal to accept the trade without a contract extension thwarted the deal last month. “He said that if I stayed in Washington, he would turn me into another Terry Glenn,” Coles said. “He said he would send a flat-screen television to my home because I’d be better off watching the games there. That was his way of saying I’d be sitting for the next couple years until they cut me.”

  25. Since when did anything that Danny Boy and the ‘Skins do make sense? That seems to be the team motto since Snyder took over.

  26. If you think this is bad does anyone remember Marcus Allen? Raiders owner Al Davis had it out for Allen, who continued to report, but Davis sat him on the bench for years until his contract ran out and he moved onto the Cheifs.

  27. All of you idiots calling Washington a bunch of idiots have no idea what the idiots in Cleveland were offering. Maybe Washington knows they have an all pro tackle and don’t want to give him up for nothing so they don’t look like idiots.

    —————–

That ship sailed a looooooonnnnnngggggg time ago. Allen and Snyder ran this team into the ground long before Williams held out due team medical staff incompetance.

  29. Good. Williams was the one that decided NOT to honor his contract… All the people that are defending him, go into your job on Monday and say you aren’t coming back in until you get a raise (And yes, Williams IS looking for more money..He is using the “mishandling” of his medical condition to get more $$) and let us know how that goes…

  30. The Jags said Ramsey wasn’t available too…until (2) #1 draft picks wrapped around a #4 was offered. Still though Allen would screw up the picks anyway.

  31. Rich people (Snyder) hate giving in. Ego And pride getting in the way of smart football decisions. How Washington.

  32. Everyone is refusing to trade everyone. It’s a disease.

Cincinnati refuses to listen to offers for AJ Green.

Minnesota won’t entertain offers for Stefon Diggs.

Denver won’t entertain offers for E. Sanders.

The same was true for Jacksonville and Ramsey until Ramsey defied and embarrassed the owner shortly after meeting with him.

The Redskins are a proud franchise. They are desperate to maintain this persona as onr of the elite franchises during a very down year. Williams is pushing all of Snyder’s buttons when he publicly decries the medical staff as the league’s worst and skeeves the Redskin digs like it were a Nazi uniform.

  33. Maybe The league should create a rule that would compel a team owner to sell based on attendance? That way the fans could boycott games and have a collective voice.
