Bill Belichick has learned not to challenge pass interference

The NFL uses such a high standard for overturning pass interference on instant replay that some coaches have learned it’s just not worth wasting a challenge. Bill Belichick is one such coach.

Belichick hasn’t challenged a pass interference call (or non-call) so far this season, and he said on WEEI that he just doesn’t think he’d win if he did.

“I think it’s been pretty clear and the league has come out and said, it has to be clear and obvious,” Belichick said, via Mike Reiss of ESPN. “What the definition of that is, I’m not sure. But I don’t think there can be much gray area, or it’s not clear and obvious. I haven’t studied all of them, but a lot of the ones that I’ve observed or have been in our games, I can see why they were called the way they were.”

That’s a lesson other coaches need to learn.

  1. Yeah, basically Robey-Coleman’s non “football play” where he cynically skittled the WR before the ball arrived is what the rule is designed to fix, not the common-or-garden stuff.

  2. Most of the coaches in the NFL are too hard headed to learn those kind of lessons. So we will continue to see coaches wasting their time throwing their little red snot rag for boarderline PI calls or non calls. This will be gone next year. It’s time to have a sky judge.

  3. The league is doing what the fans want. There is some element of holding or pass interference on every play. We want the Saints plays from happening. That’s all. Not the ticky tack calls that get scrutinized on a frame by frame basis.

  4. By this standard I’m still not sure they would have even overturned the call last year in the Saints game

  5. “I haven’t studied all of them, but a lot of the ones that I’ve observed or have been in our games, I CAN SEE WHY THEY WERE CALLED THE WAY THEY WERE.”

Which means he AGREES with Riveron’s non-reversals, unlike the rantings and ravings of the media.

  6. Total silliness. None out of 10 that I have seen that were non calls WOULD HAVE been PI if they had been called initially.
To have a different standard for replay than actual call is not only stupid, it’s also different from every other replay process.

  7. Pete Carroll challenged a non-call earlier this year and they reversed it to be PI so it is possible.

That being said he has challenged a few more that didn’t get changed and he lost a time-out…the system is definitely hit or miss…mostly miss.

No, that just means he doesn’t want to get fined…

  9. BB is setting the stage for challenging a call later when the games matter. He’s established the credibility and is demonstrating that he supports the calls on the field so that when he actually challenges they’ll be that much more inclined to support his challenge. 4d chess.

  10. The PI replay rule is working exactly as it was intended and isn’t going away. It isn’t working the way fans and coaches wanted/expected it to work but it will overturn a call like the one that hurt the Saints last year.

The coaches, IMO, are stupid. They continue to throw the red flag on garden-variety PI calls. Isn’t it clear to them by now that it is meant to clean up totally egregious calls only? They continue to waste precious timeouts b/c they can’t get this through their thick skulls.

I’d like to see a list of how many times each coach has challenged PI from least to most- this would directly translate to smartest to dumbest.

  11. I don’t think there should be rules made that change as the year goes along. They clearly have changed the way they apply this new PI rule. Early on they changed PI and non-PI calls that should never have been changed, and would not have been changed today. Wait until the playoffs, the NFL will, once again, change the application to suit their purposes.

  12. What’s there to challenge, when most of the phantom calls go your way
    Its the Cheaters way !

  13. Going into last weekend there were only 21 pass interference challenges. That means st least 10 other coaches haven’t tried to challenge a PI call/non-call. Are we going to write articles about how much smarter those coaches are too?

No, that does not mean he agrees. BB is the king of detecting patterns and tendencies. He just observed enough about the refs on what not to challenge so he doesn’t have to waste a timeout.

  15. Never seen Brady so ticked off in front of his locker. Throw in that and Darnold and Company totally disrespecting the Pats D, and the Jets are in for a world of hurt.

  16. of COURSE they aren’t going to reverse PI.
It would make them look incompetent.
Better to be controversial than incompetent.

Or, Goodell told the refs to never allow a BB challenge to be over-turned.

    Hmm.

Been going on for years. Anything close, it goes against NE.

Doesn’t have to, the refs cater to the Patriots

    Sounds great, Jets fan.

Corey Clement and Goodell say hello in the back of the end zone from SB 52.

  19. Iit did work for Pete Carrol and cost the Steelers the game.
With all the non calls, looks like someone made big money on that play alone.

  20. Except the phantom PI call in the Seahawks-Steelers game that wasn’t called on the field…Carroll challenged out of desperation, because he knew the game was pretty much over. Call reversed…The officiating is intolerable this year. The zebras are deciding games EVERY week with these calls…

  21. That’s a lesson other coaches need to learn.

    many are incapable of learning.
just let bill review and rule on any challenges across the league. if they occur elsewhere during his game, call a 15 sec special timeout (not charged) for bill to review and rule. if they occur in his game, he calls up to ernie and tells him to just do whatever is right. pay him an extra 3 million for his service to the league. we get all the calls right, it costs less, and bill doesn’t get bored just beating the hell out of everyone again and again, everyone wins.

  22. Pete Carroll challenged the arm wrapped around the waist turn of the body non call because his QB got speared helmet to helmet and the Steeler paid off refs somehow missed the obvious personal foul. They couldn’t review the atrocious no call on that…..so they decided they had to give him the reversal on the pi not called.

  23. Pass interference is a judgement call. On most of the ones I see challenged hey are questioning the officials judgement. The league has made it clear they are not going to do that. What they will change is when it was clearly PI but didn’t get called, because an official was watching something else. In fact it would surprise me if they officials look closer at the officials on the field for replay decisions then they do they play. If the offical is looking right at the infraction they wont overturn it.

    Of course not.
The Patriots and the refs have an understanding.
    —————————————

They sure do. Its called do your job and quit blaming others if it does not go your way. The whining that goes on from the anti-Pats contingent is staggering and endless.

  25. i say let the boys play real football head slaps, forearm shivers, bone crunching hits, holding scratching clawing in the trenches thats what built this game!
