Pat Shurmur: Daniel Jones is learning, we won’t go back to Eli Manning

The last time Eli Manning was benched as the Giants’ starting quarterback, in 2017, it lasted just one game before coach Ben McAdoo was fired, Geno Smith went back to the bench, and Manning went back to the field.

In 2019, there’s no chance of that.

Giants coach Pat Shurmur was asked today, after Daniel Jones threw an interception, took eight sacks and fumbled three times, whether he would consider a quarterback change. Shurmur insisted he will not.

“No. I think Daniel’s going to learn from everything that’s going on,” Shurmur said, “Just like all the other rookies that are playing are going to learn from the things that happen. But you have to learn and you have to win games. I’m well aware of that. Totally well aware of that.”

The Giants won their first two games with Jones as the starting quarterback, but they’ve now lost three in a row. Shurmur says Jones has to learn and win games, but at the moment he’s only doing one of those things. Then again, they weren’t winning any games when Manning was starting, either.

  1. He won’t get benched because he’s a first round draft choice but he’s not playing well. Why go back to Manning if you’re going to lose anyways.

  2. LOL. The guy just isn’t that good. He had one decent half against the Bucs, who have no Secondary and Giants fans already have him in the HOF.

then trade Eli to the Bears!

I’m all for Eli to the Bears, or Flacco, Dalton, Keenum. At this give me anyone besides the two QBs on the Bears roster

  4. When does a coach finally realize that a player just might not be very good? With this attitude New York Giants fans are in for a tough remainder of the season as Shurmur just admitted they are “”just mailing it in” as he is not giving them the best chance to win. Jones was a reach to begin with.

As a Bears fan, I have a ton of experience in realizing a QB isn’t that good. I watched the Giants game yesterday and Jones made some nice throws. He at least has the potential to grow, I’d take him over the turd we have leading the offense

  6. Eli has no trade value as a starting QB. The rest of the league knows that. He needs to finish his career with the Giants and hope that he’s able to make the HOF.

  7. Perhaps the answer is to fire gettleman and the entire staff at the end of the year. Shurmur is no better at being an HC than Macadoo. Bectner is terrible and his staff stinks too. I’m not ready to give up on Jones, but who the hell is their QB coach, because he isn’t accomplishing a damn thing with this kid and, can once again, the OL stinks. Solder is practically a revolving door. This last showing against the Cardinals was horrible.

  8. It’s all about the salary. Nobody is going to pick up Eli’s salary. He can be a free agent and make about $10 at the end of the year. Kind of what Jay Cutler did.

  9. Jones has an upside Eli only is going to get worse. Eli’s game is now check down and 3 and out. Can’t win with that. The kid needs to play and develop. Eli reaches his expiration date several years ago. Truth is Eli is a .500 win QB that got hot for two post season super bowl wins with great defenses.

To the people calling to “Trade Eli”…..thanks for the laugh!!!!

What exactly would they trade him for? A bag of practice jerseys?

    ==========

I see what you did there……..

  11. Daniel Jones after watching last nights Cowboys game “Hey, I really dont mind. If you want to bring Eli back and have me watch a little from the bench, it’s cool.”

  12. Buhhh buh but Daniel Jones was a pre-season super-star, you’re telling me that doesn’t translate to the regular season? Who woulda thought that?

  13. When does a coach finally realize that a player just might not be very good?

‘Finally realize’ about a ROOKIE who turned 22 years-old on MAY 27!?!

  14. Jones did not get first team reps in camp. Fair comparison- look at Brady’s 4th or 5th game after he came in cold to replace Bledsoe- cupla int’s, low yardage, etc.

Kids gonna need some time but hes gonna be goid. very good.

  15. Successful teams are more than just a quarterback. The Giants have poor OL, coaching, and management. Jones was a reach where he was drafted but that doesn’t make him a bad quarterback. He can succeed in this league if the three weaknesses mentioned get fixed. Unfortunately, that’s likely to take several years and by that time he’ll be shellshocked.

  16. That decision will likely get the HC fired! Eli is their present, Jones is their future. Enjoy that losing college record. It’ll likely continue!

  17. Maybe they want to lose get top 5 pick again! Need more PLAYERS
Coach is not good play calling a JOKE
Try running the ball and not turning it over 3 times a game
What’s with the fake runs with wide outs?
    Didn’t fool anyone
