Sam Darnold turns ball over five times as Patriots roll to 33-0 win over Jets

Getty Images

The New England Patriots are a significantly better football team than the New York Jets.

Sam Darnold was responsible for five turnovers as the Patriots defense completely smothered the Jets offense in a 33-0 victory on Monday night. Darnold lost a fumble and was intercepted four times as New England pressured him into mistake after mistake.

Darnold could barely manage to complete any pass as the Patriots blitzed him into oblivion. Darnold was intercepted twice and lost a fumble on three of New York’s first four possessions on Monday night. The Patriots led 24-0 at the end of that stretch and never looked back.

Devin McCourty, Duron Harmon, Stephon Gilmore and Terrence Brooks all picked off Darnold and John Simon delivered a strip-sack that was recovered by Kyle Van Noy. Additionally, a Ryan Kalil snap sailed out of the back of the end zone for a safety as the Jets offense was non-functional against New England’s defense. Braxton Berrios would muff a punt late in the fourth quarter as well to give the Patriots the ball yet another time.

Darnold’s night ended with 11 completions on 32 attempts for 86 yards with four interceptions and a lost fumble. Darnold’s 3.6 passer rating was the worst showing by a starting quarterback against the Patriots in the Bill Belichick era among starters to have at least 10 passing attempts.

Per Pro Football Reference, Kerry Collins’ 4.6 passer rating in a 59-0 Patriots win over the Tennessee Titans in 2009 was the previous benchmark and only other showing with a sub-10.0 passer rating. Collins finished that game 2 of 12 for -7 yards and an interception.

Meanwhile, the Patriots offense didn’t have to do all that much to roll to an easy win. A stellar opening drive set the tone for the night as New England took nearly nine minutes off the clock on a 16-play, 78-yard drive touchdown drive to jump in front.

Sony Michel scored three touchdowns from inside the 5-yard line and Tom Brady connected with Phillip Dorsett for a 26-yard touchdown to carry the Patriots attack. Mike Nugent added a 34-yard field goal and the safety from the bad snap combined to give the Patriots the 33-0 final margin.

  1. Few thoughts:

    1. The Patriot’s O-line is atrocious (contrary to “some” people’s assertion that they have the best in the conference) and was bullied all night. The run game is non-existent. Can’t even win a yard without trying half a dozen times. Pass protection isn’t much better. If Brady has to hold it beyond 1.5 seconds, it’s liable to be stripped or his arm batted for a duck pick. Basically, there is no offense other than Brady’s quick release.

    2. Sam Darnold can’t play. The Patriots disrespected him by having no safety and sending an extra rusher, but the kid just fails to find the hot route. While the Patriots D is impressive and opportunistic, they’re not as good as Sam is making them out to be. That’s a defensive look you can’t roll out against a half competent quarterback.

  2. Offense left points on the board but definitely improved from last week. Brady was ok other than the pick. Defense was good but Darnold being terrible definitely helped. Hope they can keep going versus the Browns. Go Pats!

  3. If they have a quarterback coach, he needs to be fired. If they don’t have a quarterback coach, then the head coach and gm need to be fired for not having one.

  4. I really hope this ends all talk about the Jets being contenders in the AFCE and NFL. They barely beat a Cowboy team without their starting Tackles, an awful D and boneheaded coach and then have delusions of grandeur. At least when the Bills played their worst game they made Brady look terrible and were in the game and a chance to win at the end. This game was over after the 1st qtr.

Pats have yet to play a decent team. Well, 1 decent team in the Bills, but they have zero offense.

They have no offense yet they are # 5 in scoring NOT counting defensive or special teams points # 5 in the NFL

But they have “no offense “

  6. Pats opponents have been lame and the receivers, running and OL are significantly deficient. The D has been spectacular but will they be that against the good teams right around the corner? BB needs to pull off a couple of trades for a receiver and an OL. Give up some of those draft picks. It’s not like he has been putting them to good use for a number of years now anyway.

  7. Any time I see Fireman Ed bellowing incoherently at the start of a Pats-Jets tilt I get a big Cheshire Cat grin on my face. How long do you think he hung around? 2nd quarter?

  8. Obviously this was a terrible game all around. Darnold was awful but I still have faith in him the problem with this team is management. Why do we spend the number 3 overall pick on quennin Williams and not play him. When he’s in he’s shown promise but the dude is 21 years old and this season is a wash why aren’t we just playing him so he learns and gets better. Why don’t we trade Leonard Williams, Leonard has been solid but not what we hoped for and I don’t want to resign him because I don’t feel he deserves a big contract. This is a team that isn’t successful. because we’ve been absolutely trash at drafting players I don’t know the stat exactly but I know the jets have the least amount of players drafted by their organization in the league. Trumaine Johnson is trash I would just cut him and don’t care about the cap hit he’s that bad. The oline is atrocious the Osemele situation is so disfunctional. We need to draft offense year after year we draft interior dline man and it never pans out can the front office make some trades aquire picks and turn this dumpster fire around

  9. Talk therapy and motivational chats on the sidelines, the qb openly talking about seeing ghosts, throwing off his back foot all night, missing open receivers and soft tossing the ball into coverage when the rush was coming full bore at him. By the middle of the 3rd quarter, I was hoping Gase would pull Darnold in order to protect his psyche because he is going to see a lot of what the Patriots threw at him for the rest of the season. These types of games, in front of a national audience, mic’d up because he thought he’d arrived all while laying a colossal egg for the world to see can serve to break a young qb. But all that is besides the issue. Why exactly is Gase still a head coach in the NFL?

Sam Darnold was the AFC Offensive Player of the Week last week when they beat Dallas. Is Dallas a decent team? If not, please provide a list of all the “decent” teams in the NFL so we can refer back to it when NE beats them too.

The Jets will draft a QB early in the 2020 draft, Darnold is a complete disaster.
    – – – – – – – – – –
And he to will have the luxury of throwing the ball to Jamison Crowder, and Robby Anderson. Two guys that put all sorts of fear in all secondaries. Oops i forgot to mention Ryan Griffin as well. He will also benefit of having an o-line that can’t block.(you can thank the Titans that you are not dfl in that stat) Hey but take a QB, and all your problems are solved…smh

  26. And just last week he was annointed. Now he is a lot like Baker Mayfield. And dak Prescott (remember when he was going to break the bank with his next contract).

The QB position is hard. Finding a good one is very rare.

    ———-
Yes the Pats can roll that out because they have the talent all over the CB position to not need safety help. I’m not saying it’ll work vs an elite offense, but it’s not only reserved for the Sam Darnold tier.

  28. Darnold looked broken out there. He was throwing prayers off his back foot all night long. Gase didn’t do him any favors with his play calling, Quick slants, screens etc all help mitigate pass rush and he did none of that.

  29. On behalf of the entire New England Patriots organization; I would like to apologize to the Jets organization, and in particular Sam Darnold.

Unbeknown to us, Mean Bill escaped his cage by tricking Sour Puss Bill this evening around 8:15 pm resulting in the televised devastation you saw. We only became aware of the situation when we noticed a smile on Bills face during the game, something Sour Puss Bill would never do. We rectified the situation by corralling and caging Mean Bill, but unfortunately it was too late for MR. Darnold and the Jets organization.

    Thank you.

  30. I was a Jets fan as a child. I was fortunate to move to New England by the early 70’s…think Wonder Years. And my wife looks like Winnie.

  31. Obviously, the offense could have scored a lot more, but I felt like after they got up by 24, they were already more concerned about running the clock than scoring 60 points. I think that was part of the offense not looking as strong as they could have.

  32. Aaron Rodgers is the GOAT. Change my mind.

    ——-

A mind that warped , there’s no point in changing

  33. Remember when Teddy Bridgewater was by far their best looking qb in the preseason last year, but then they traded him away for a third round pick because the 26 year old wasn’t “the future”? Makes total sense for a franchise looking for “the guy” forever.

  34. Remember when Teddy Bridgewater had by far the best preseason for the jets last year, so their response to that was to trade him away for “value” because he wasn’t “the future”? Seems crazy to trade away a 26 year old promising qb who showed he was healthy for a franchise who has been looking for “the guy” forever. Yikes.

  35. As a side note, Mike Nugent looked quite solid out there kicking. Everything right down the middle. Looks like he’s settling in.

    ——————————
the Bills offense is currently ranked #17. Not top of the league but not “no offense” either….

  37. Have never seen what all the fuss about Darnold was about. Turned it over a lot at USC too, yet was supposedly a “sure thing” franchise QB.

  38. patsfan1820 says: Brady was ok other than the pick.
    ————–
Yeah, but don’t forget his arm/body was impeded a bit on that throw. He did remarkably well with what’s really a very porous heavily patched o-line that needs him to get the ball out in record time. And he’s missing half his weapons to the point of using linebackers as fullbacks and TE Tomlinson signed 2 days ago. If they get healthy & clicking they’ll be winning 60-0.

  39. Frsico fan here. Have to admit that the Pats are the best team overall and best D in the NFL right now. Impressive shutout victory against a team that won last week.

  40. Wait till the Patriots offense gets fixed and back on track. With this defense who can stop them Yes I know they played lousy teams but seriously only 1 passing touchdown in 7 Games is something I never have seen before.

  41. Can’t believe Dem Boyz lost to Dem Jetz.

Darnold is going to be ok but he needs a real coach. Gase has no business being a HC

  42. I said it many months ago and I will say it again, Adam Gase will ruin Sam Darnold and the Jets.
This guy is a complete fraud and the Patriots know his game plan better than his own team does.
He ruined the little bit of chemistry in Miami and is doing the same thing in NY.
How long will it be before Bell pulls a Ramsey and forces his way off a loser team.

  43. Someone reported that the Jets started 2019 with $100M in cap space and are now down to $5M (not to mention the impact in following years). This is what they got for it. Seems nearly impossible (even for the Jets).

  44. Gino Pizza, good one! LOL at that! And now that the Pats picked up Sanu they’ll be even better. Under BB’s coaching the guy will play like a Hall of Famer! GO PATS! GO BRADY! On to Cleveland…. 7 and 0, haters! Get over it. Brady is the GOAT of players and BB is the GOAT of coaches. Six rings and counting….

  45. There has never been a coach team tandem like this in the any team sport and there never will be another. 20yrs of dominance. Dynasty. Genius. To compare them to someone else is fools fodder.

  46. “I can’t remember another starting QB playing that bad.”

Ryan Leaf, Jamarcus Russell, Nathan Petersen, there are plenty of others.

  47. Sanchez gave us the Butt fumble. Darnold gave us the ghosts…
Demaryius Thomas complained that after being with the Patriots for two weeks in camp, having them put his abilities on display in the fourth preseason game and another week on the roster, his time on the Patriots was “a waste of his time“. While I thoroughly enjoyed the game I think that what the Jets put out to the nation yesterday, was a much more egregious waste of time.

  57. All those saying the Patriots have not played anyone decent this year are correct. But, the same defense held the Rams to 3 points in the Super Bowl. This defense is real. The defensive backs are very good and can hold up one on one. This frees three very large agile linebackers to create havoc in the backfield.

  58. Beyond embarrassing for the Jets. Gase should have been fired after this game. The Jets couldn’t do anything right, not even punt! Ridiculous. Gase has been riding the Manning connection train far too long. Very stupid of the Jets to hire this guy when they saw what he could in Miami. Listening to Darnold during the game was painful as well, he was confused the entire time. Until the rest of the AFC get’s the mess together the Patriots will continue to win the division.

I see this comment a lot, but let’s be honest – how many decent teams are there in the NFL? No more than a handful, looking at the league right now. And no team has played only decent other teams.

Thankfully, in a few more weeks we won’t have to hear this comment any longer, because the Pats are about to have the toughest stretch any team is likely to have this season.

    1. Rough game from Darnold, an abomination actually, no excuses for reverting back to USC Darnold with his foot work.

    2. Did the Jets coaching staff think it was a good idea to send a 22 year old QB out there to set protections against Belichick’s disguised blitzes and coverages and not slide the protections or make any halftime adjustments? Mahomes didn’t even do that last year, Andy Reid set him up with some nice short passes and made adjustments, Russell Wilson remains the only young QB to accomplish that.

    3. Darnold will see better days, he has the talent but it’s malpractice if my Jets keep Gase for another year and I simply will not watch or support the Johnson family but I will root from them from a far and follow the team on social media/internet. I’ve had it.

Everyone thinks Darnold has talent around him but he has no offensive line, DT who can’ catch the ball when it hits his hands, a TE (Herndon out) and Robbie Anderson who wants to play the game by the sidelines. That made NE’s defense even better than it is already. They just counted how many blockers the jets had and came with one more. Gase is lost and will always be lost. Hope Johnsons realize they need to get a new head coach otherwise the Jets will be in the top 5 in the draft for the next 3-4 years.

  78. “now they are using ghosts…..crazy…”

Ok you got me with that one I couldn’t help but laugh.

And hey, it is only a few days before Halloween!

  79. I didn’t really like much about Rex Ryan, but after a particularly bad game against the Patriots he conducted a team burial of a game ball to shake the evil spirits. I thought it was funny. After last night’s game it may be time for the Jets to conduct another “ceremony”.

  80. The Jets beat Dallas and the national media said the Jets are for real, and Sam Darnold looks like the quarterback of the future….So how come when the Pats dismantle the Jets the narrative changes to the same old whiny worn out Oh the Patriots don’t play anyone who’s any good nonsense

  81. Oh here come the schedule excuses ? What excuse is next ? No matter the excuses of weak soft crybabies the Patriots will keep on winning. Why ? Because they work harder study harder practice harder and play harder than any other team. Because they are unselfish team players who do not give a crap about fantasy points and statistics. Why ? Because they have the greatest quarterback and head coach in NFL history. And because they game plan specifically for each opponent and do the work to make it possible. Why ? because they are talented tough players that compete every week for 60 minutes. Why ? Because they take no opponent lightly. No trap games derail their season.

Soft Schedules ? Weak division ? Play Calls ? Opponent mistakes ? Luck ?
These all sound like excuses of teams and fan bases that lost the game. Every division in football goes through cycles. The schedule is rotated every year. You play one division in NFC and one in AFC and then play your own division. That is 14 games. The other two games are decided by record. Since New England was one seed they drew the Texans and Chiefs as their extra two games. The schedule is made same way for every team. What those teams current records are change year to year. Teams that complain about the schedule or make excuses will always be losers. When Belichick and Brady came to the Patriots they were a very bad team. But they got better by drafting well making smart trades instituting the Patriot Way and game planning by the genius Belichick and excecution by Brady and the other players. Any team could have drafted Brady or any other player Belichick drafted low and made a star. The Patriots are destined to be a Dynasty no matter what excuses people may make or how they try to explain away their greatness. Dynasties ignore the noise and do not listen to idiots with zero football IQ or zero knowledge of NFL history. Whining and crying and making excuses are for teams that are lazy and stupid and players more interested in their fantasy points or their brand. All have zero rings. A Dynasty is the greatest most dominant team of their era or in the history of the game like the Patriots. They are a dynasty because they beat EVERY OTHER TEAM not because of some lame excuses or the dimwitted rationalization of morons.

    A. DYNASTY. IS. A. DYNASTY. PERIOD. Wake up IDIOTS. On to Cleveland

Lot of Patriots fanboys with no jobs on here.

    Says the unemployed Jets fan

  83. Full credit where credit is due. What the Patriots are doing…what they have been doing for 2 decades is unmatched in any professional sport. No doubt about it. But man…it must be nice to play the Jets, Dolphins and Bills twice a year every, single, year. And lets face it…those 3 teams are consistently bad. For as long as the Patriots have been dominant, the other 75% of teams in their division have been equally as non-dominant. No wonder they win the division every year. I mean really…when was the last time a wild card came out of the AFC East?

  84. 7×5=35….that about sums it up give or take a FG. These games usually end up this way with turnovers and being forced to play sloppy high risk catch up.
