Greg Schiano missed a chance to coordinate an all-time great defense

The Patriots have, at least based on their first seven games, one of the best defenses in NFL history. But they don’t have a defensive coordinator.

That’s because Greg Schiano, who was briefly hired to be the Patriots’ defensive coordinator, resigned in the offseason for personal reasons. If Schiano were still on the job, he’d be getting an enormous amount of credit — and plenty of buzz as a head-coaching candidate.

Although he failed as the Buccaneers’ head coach following a long stint as head coach at Rutgers, Schiano would undoubtedly be a candidate for some head-coaching openings if he were coordinating a Patriots defense playing this well. The last two seasons, the Patriots’ defensive coordinators — Matt Patricia and Brian Flores — became head coaches. And neither of the last two Patriots defenses were as good as this one.

Rutgers has already fired its head coach this season, and Schiano is considered a strong candidate. That may be where he wants to wind up anyway. But if he were in New England right now, he’d have a lot more options than just one.

  1. Can we all just admit, that the AFC is a dumpster fire this year and the Pats really haven’t played anyone? Or we are just going to turn a blind eye to it like we do every single year? I mean, the best team the Pats faced was the Bills. Let that one alone sink in.

  2. dude is straight trash. coaching his players to dive at other players knees on kneel downs. please. there’s already enough garbage in this league. that being said, dan snyder on line 1.

  3. BB is the greatest defensive mind ever. If Brady and Welker don’t melt down in the second half of SB 46, NE’s D allows 13 points in that SB and wins.

It’s unreal how great BB is. Greatest Coach, GM, etc, leader of a sports team, ever. EVER.

  4. They are as good as they are for one reason and one reason ONLY – Bill Belichick has taken over the play calling for the defense. Yes his son is there wearing a headset, and yes Bret Bielema is the line coach (and I think the future head coach forget about Josh), and Mayo is back, and a guy who doesn’t get any press at all and should is Mike Pellegrino another unsung hero of the Patriots coaching staff who simply goes to work everyday and does his job. It takes everyone BUYING IN for this train to keep rolling the way it does, and that is what other teams continuously fail to realize. If you bring in a bunch of stats guys who are me, me, me 24 hours a day 7 days a week – CLEVELAND – you aren’t going to get where you’re trying to get.

The Pats D has given up just 3 TD’s in 7 games. Let that sink in. It’s still the NFL, not allowing the opposing team to score TD’s at this rate is difficult no matter who you’re playing.

Can we all just admit, that the AFC is a dumpster fire this year and the Pats really haven’t played anyone?

    *************************************************************************************

No, sorry — that cannot happen. Pats fans refuse to acknowledge that the offenses they’ve played are downright bad — avg rankings of Pats opponents’ offenses in terms of passing offense, rushing offense, and total offense are in the mid 20’s at best. Jets (twice), Giants, Redskins, Bills, Dolphins, and Steelers; all offenses that have struggled. If it doesn’t make the Pats amazing, it’s not allowed to be acknowledged.

  7. He left because of them bringing on Bennett right?? Now Bennett has one foot out the door… what a waste

  8. I’m not disagreeing. It would have helped Schiano’s career. BB would get the credit for being the constant anyway. As he should.

Having said that watch BB not even be mentioned for Coach of the Year yet again. Don Shula holds the record for most COY awards with 4. Current coaches it’s BB (3) and Ron Rivera (2) Bruce Arians (2)

Does that seem right to anyone else? Should Arians and Rivera be nipping at BB heels? Do they seem like they are on par with BB from a coaching standpoint?

  9. Schiano wasn’t the right guy for the Bucs, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a good coach. He’s probably better in college, but given the right circumstances, he could do well in the NFL.

  10. So your theory is that they would be just as good with Schiano calling the D as with Belichick calling it? I don’t think so……

You mean the 5-1 Bills? They’ve one of the best records in the NFL. Pats also played Steelers before Big Ben got injured. And as for the rest of the conference, Ravens look as good as any top-tier NFC team, as would Chiefs when Mahomes is back. Colts look great too – but let this sink in: the seemingly awful Jets last week beat the top team in the NFCE.

  12. Pats defense is really good and they do it with pretty mediocre talent in the front 7 and downright bad rush talent in the front 4. The DBs can cover but I’ve never seen a “scheme” dominate the way this scheme does, and they flat out dominate. They probably do a better job playing the chess match showing vs bringing pressure etc and causing confusion leading to free runners then any team ever. Having said that, they really haven’t played any good offenses and things will likely begin to revert to the mean at some point.

  13. Jerry Jones should give BB 49% of the Cowboys. They’d over run the NFC.

The talent they’ve wasted over the years is remarkable. JJ is actually decent at drafting (or listening to his son/scouts-whatever).

I can’t think of a better team ‘on paper’ than the Cowboys that have never sniffed anything minus a bad snap.

PS: Giants’ fan, love BB, but also was stuck going to the Patriots games in the 70’s and 80’s when my brother had season Jets tickets and it was the only game I could get. He used them for business and well, NE was awful and that was my free game every year. Spent the time scoping girls 🙂

Especially since it’s an offensive era. Did you notice once NE went up 17-0, the refs started with the phantom flags?

Even the “block in the back” by Edelman was made up.

The two penalties on JC Jackson were legit, but there was a third that wasn’t and we saw no replay.

The ref then tried another one on a ball that was luanched into the first row where it was so obvious he was trying to help the Jets, Hochuli JR had to intervene to tell him thay the Goodell Manifesto of trying to manipulate the game for ratings was looking to obvious.

    LOL

    I’m good.

It’s like clockwork. Any time NE gets out to a huge lead, you can guarantee phantom flags will come out.

The BB coaching tree has had no success outside of NE.

    0 2 Rate This

    ——————-

it does at the college level…The reason it doesn’t at the NFL level is because the new coach coming from BB’s tree has no GM control and/or is told to win NOW, which is the opposite of how BB is allowed to build teams in NE.

There has to be no owner meddling, a 2-3 rebuild period, and then you can judge.

Flores seems to be allowed this recipe in Miami, so he’ll be the first to really judge.

  17. I don’t care who they played. The way this defense is destroying teams is ridiculous. They did it to the highest scoring team in the NFL in the SBowl, and they’re way better this yr. They’ll do it against teams like Philly and Balti too. Then everyone can go back to the refs and cheating excuses.

The D Line is wildly UNDERRATED.Your comments proves this. There are 1st and 2nd rd picks and Michael Bennet can’t even get on the field, no can potential 5th rd steal and Auburn transfer, Sam Cowart.

Lawrence Guy ranked out as a top DL last year per PFF. Shelton has played very well and his career is taking off. John Simon is a 3-4 cast off from Houston/Indy, who played at OSU.

Kyle Van Noy is easily a Pro Bowl player and has been for 2 years as a former 2nd rd pick. Just because the media doesn’t pay attention or fawn over the Pats players out of a jealousy towards BB, doesn’t mean NE “lacks talent on the DL”.

Dopey Bart Scott just rattled this off this past week on his dumb show. You don’t think all the disrespect shown isn’t plastered all over the walls in Foxborough?

I can guarantee you it is.

You could start the spot players and back ups and field a good 2nd defense. That’s how good and deep they are.

They come at you in waves, basically. There is no weakness.

  20. Next up alcorn state. It’s a good defense but it’s probably the easiest 7 game stretch an NFL team has ever faced.

  21. Again. Haven’t played anyone. Roethlesberger was already injured 1st game. Best “team” they’ve played was Buffalo, and their offense sucks.
Talk to me when they shut out the Seahawks, Saints with healthy Brees or the Chiefs with a healthy Mahomes.

  22. So what you’re saying is the defensive coordinator has no effect on how well the defense plays, but if a defense plays well the coordinator should be given a head coaching job?

  23. Only Belichick could have an all time great defense with no superstar players in in it. No other coach or coordinator could have had this defense playing the way it has been playing.

Green Bay, through and through. What is your excuse now dude?

  25. Glad he bailed. This is the best NE defense I’ve ever seen. They’ve managed to keep continuity from last years playoffs.

  26. Pump the brakes on New Englands vaunted D. Defensive rankings of opponents in order.
    Steelers 28
    Dolphins. 31
    Jets. 32
    Bill’s. 21
    Redskins 29
    Giants. 24
    JetsAgain 32
They’d better have given up only 3 TDs against that verrry weak schedule.

  27. The Patriots should be glad he resigned. That defense would be crap under Schiano. Did you see how much the defense improved at OSU after Schiano left?

  28. Have you seen the difference between Ohio State’s defense last year and this year? Much better without Schiano.

  29. Gotta love the haters who continuously say well they haven’t played anyone who have the Saints played? Outside of 1 game against Seattle who else have they beaten that’s any good ..Dallas? Hahahaha that’s funny…The Bucs? Boy theres a really stout team right there…The Rams? Don’t even get me started on the Rams….Jacksonville? Man there’s a Superbowl contender the Jags boy oh boy look out for them….How about Green Bay? They’ve beaten the Bears big deal the Patriots could beat the Bears any day of the week every single week…The Broncos? Come on not even close….The Cowboys? Hahahahahah….The Lions? Not happening this year folks yea last year but the Patriots defense is all shiny new folks the Lions wouldn’t score more than 10…..Ok let’s talk about the 9ers and Jimmy G who has he beaten that’s any good? They’ve beaten the Bucs boy oh boy those scary Bucs…The Bengals do I need to say more about that gimme win? The Steelers who the Patriots dismantled….The Redskins who the Pats destroyed….The Rams who we’ve already beaten in the Superbowl and the Browns who are next up to be destroyed…..So who have those teams beaten that the Pats couldn’t beat?? Come on haters I’m waiting

The team the Pats trounced last night, beat one of the NFC’s preseason favorites to go to the SB this year in Dallas just last week. Let that one sink in!

  31. What a bunch of losers crying about schedules and anything Patriots related. Go cry to your Momma. There is no crying in football. Maybe you should just watch Oprah if you cannot handle the Patriots Dynasty. Six titles and 8 straight AFC championship games with GOAT QB and head coach trumps any excuses about the schedule.

If you only knew how stupid you sound. Dynasties MAKE soft schedules and they MAKE weak divisions because they DOMINATE. Go ask the cowboys how good the Jets are. There were a lot of talking heads that thought that the game would be competitive. But Belichick and Brady and the defense schooled the Jets.

Same defense that allowed 3 points to the high scoring rams and genius boy McVaY in Super Bowl and shut out Mahomes in first half of AFC championship game before going to prevent defense with a big lead. New England will keep winning. Are you ever going to stop making excuses. Maybe y’all should just watch Oprah instead of NFL.

The NFL is too rough for crybabies and whiners

    ——————————————————————————————–

They play well in the scheme but they are not all that talented. Shelton & John Simon were castoffs for a reason. Jamie Collins was terrible last year n Cleveland. Michael Bennett hasn’t been relevant in years. Wise & Guy are JAGs. Van Noy & Hightower are good players that would play well on any team the other guys form a synergy that allows the sum to play much greater than their individual parts.

Watch their base pass rush on non-blitzing downs. It leaves a LOT to be desired. What they do well is stop the run & that allows Belichik to scheme the crap out of offenses on passing downs.

It’s a lot cheaper and easier to stop the run in this league because size & length is cheaper than freaky athleticism. That’s Belichik’s secret if there is one.

  34. Plenty of tissues for the crying haters spewing their weekly nonsense….The Patriots NEVER play anyone any good….So I guess that first Superbowl win against the GREATEST SHOW ON TURF was an easy game wasn’t it? Yeah Kurt was washed up that year wasn’t he? So I guess beating Mahomes AT HIS HOUSE on their way to another Superbowl win last year was a gimme game right? Yea Kansas City really wasn’t any good were they? Going to Pittsburgh and beating them in 2005 IN THEIR HOUSE on the way to another Superbowl was a gimme game as well…Beating Ray Lewis in his prime in 2012 was a gimme game too? Beating MVP Matt Ryan after being down 28-3 in the Superbowl was a gimme game all the way right? Beating the Seahawks when they had the legion of boom that was sooooo easy wasn’t it? Oh the Patriots never beat any team that’s any good….Nope never
