Bill Belichick already mentions Jarvis Landry’s comments to Patriots players

Browns receiver Jarvis Landry apparently didn’t mean to guarantee a win over the Patriots. But his “we’re going to win” comments caught fire on Twitter without regard to his effort to backtrack, and the Patriots surely will seize on the version that best serves their interests.

As noted by Tom Curran of NBC Sports Boston, one Patriots player who was asked if he’d seen Landry’s comments said, “No, but Bill [Belichick] mentioned it to us.”

Of course he did. And he will do it again and again. Because 7-0 teams with historically dominant defenses and the greatest quarterback of all time who are favored to win by 13 rarely have the opportunity to use things said by the other team to provide extra incentive to win.

Regarding the effort to clean things up by Landry, it won’t matter. The video makes a compelling case for a guarantee.

“Now that you guys are all rested up,” Landry is asked, “what’s your sense for how the Browns are going to do coming out of the bye?”

“Well, we’re gonna win,” Landry responds. “We’re gonna win. It’s just that simple. We’re getting guys back healthy again, and we’re gonna win.”

Landry later said that he meant to say, “We’re going there to win.” And subsequent usages of the phrase “we’re gonna win” during his 11-minute session support the notion that he’s saying the objective for the team is to go there to win the game (which, of course, it always it). But the video is what it is; he says what he says. In the specific context of the question asked and answered beginning at 6:14 of the video, it comes off as a matter-of-fact vow to prevail.

And maybe they will. But they’re definitely not going to catch the Patriots napping. Belichick already has begun the process of keeping that from happening.

  1. Pats are overrated. 11-33 is the record of their opponents. If we count the Jets twice 12-38. The only team over .500 they played is the Bills, who have a suspect offense. Haven’t faced one team with a top 15 offense. That D might be good, but it isn’t all it’s hyped up to be. I’ll take the 85 Bears all day everyday. Twice on Sundays.

  2. Pats are legit I used to think this way to and than I realized well am trying to realize the only way to beat them is to wait for Brady and Belichick to retire. The browns are doomed and they didn’t even play yet. The browns line is terrible and baker sucks this year this game is over and it didn’t even start

  3. This is the year of the pig, like pigskin football. Look at all the pig years so far: 1959, 2007, and 2019. The Patriots were established on Nov. 16, 1959, they won 18 consecutive games in the 2007 season, and they are looking great right now. How can anyone possibly call this team overrated knowing this history? The best is still yet to come.

  4. ” I’ll take the 85 Bears all day everyday. Twice on Sundays.”

The 85 Bears faced a relatively weak schedule as well.

Pats D is currently the best in the league. I expect it to stay that way throughout the season. Belichick teams always improve substantially over the course of the season. These guys will be even better come playoff time.

  5. What’s overrated is talking about all these non-guarantee guarantees. Who cares? They should be going there thinking they are going to win.

The ’85 Bears were arguably the best D I ever saw and no one is confusing this Pats team with them…yet. That said the only QB worthy of mention they faced in their first 7 games was Montana. They weren’t exactly up against a murderers row either. The ’72 Dolphins had an unbelievably soft schedule as well. Teams can only play what’s on their schedule. Historically great D’s make their bones not merely by defeating opponents but by embarrassing them.

Well then I do hope you enjoy your 85 Bears.

  8. Belichick is the greatest head coach of all time, and that’s coming from a Bears fan. I’m just thankful the Bears don’t have to play the Patriots twice a year.

They are a very good defense but nobody touches the ’85 Bears.

  10. Why doesn’t some team with an “easy” schedule go 7-0 every year? Think about it.

  11. me, me, me, me, me, me – that’s the sound of one of the fleet of Browns diva buses reversing.

  12. Pats have been playing a ‘weak’ schedule for 18 years and their 13 afc championshp games.

  13. Belichick is good. Brady is good. Not enough credit is given to their scouting department that despite picking 31st or 32nd in the draft every year and have had countless offensive and defensive coordinators just keep winning.

  14. This is the reason why so many people are busting on the Browns. The players saying things that are better left unsaid.

76 Steelers over the 85 Bears for my money.
In their 12 games leading up to the AFC Championship loss to the Raiders (24-7), the Steelers gave up an average of just 6.4 points a game. They played against three HOF quarterbacks (Tarkenton, Fouts, Griese) and the NFL MVP (Bert Jones) during this 12 game stretch. Also played against Ken Anderson twice, Brian Sipe twice and Dan Pastorini twice as well.

In their 16 games – 14 regular season, 2 playoffs the Steelers played against a HOF quarterback in 5 games (Stabler twice, Tarkenton, Fouts, Griese), the NFL MVP (Jones) and a borderline HOF quarterback (Anderson) twice.

  17. I don’t understand the whole “things they said give them extra motivation” thing. If they weren’t already motivated, they wouldn’t be where they are.

  18. I’m a browns fan I can’t wait for my team to be universally hated like the Patriots. I must be crazy because I don’t think the Browns are going to get destroyed. I think the Patriots have a few games every year where people ask what’s going on. Well mark this as one of them. I think the browns are going to bait there nfl best defense to step up and stop chubbs. And they will bank on OBj and Jarvis to win one on one. Anyone who is filing this game away is mistaken. The Browns have a great schedule the rest of the season and this game is the perfect game to put the Browns back into consideration. People always think this game is about records,, when its really about matchups. The browns matchup quite well with the Patriots.

  19. Do people really think “bulletin board material” is a thing for any player beyond college?

These guys get paid a fortune and already give 110%, especially on that Pats D. No one sees this and thinks, “I’ll play harder this game.”

And the dude is just trying to light a fire for himself & his (thus far) underperforming team. Nothing wrong w/ that.

Which part of the matchup favors Cleveland? The Pats have among best group of linebackers in the league and definitely the best secondary. If the Browns are going to steal this one they’ll need to do it with their D

  21. Let’s see our Defensive line vs Patriots offensive line our corners are absolutely fantastic and go four deep. Our offense is probably the best you have seen, ie jets, bills, Dolphins, lol, I love Tom brady dont be confused and I actually respect the Patriots as the greatest dynasty we’ve ever seen, and I know the Browns have a really long way to go but every dawg has its day, dont be fooled by the record the Browns aren’t the Jets, and Baker isn’t Darnold, ghost, lol crazy kid.

  22. Da bears played in a division where the 2nd place team had a 500 record. They also played the mighty 2-14 bucs as well. Their biggest player was the fridge. 300+ lb players were rare then. They wouldn’t last against today’s grown men. It’s just physics.

  23. If these QBs would spike the ball on every pass they have attempted against the Patriots their combined rating would be a 39. The Patriots defense is better than the ground.

  24. Hang another banner for beating bad teams
    —————
You seem to be confused, it’s the Colts that hang participation banners, here in Foxboro we hang Super Bowl banners! Maybe you missed the fact that Super Bowl banner #SIX was just put up.

  25. This Pats team has to win with its defense. I haven’t been comfortable with the offense since the season started. The offensive line is a mess and I’m thinking any decent team is going to have Brady hitting the ground more often than he’s used to. I expect it will be a couple of games before Sanu becomes super-productive and with Gordon now on the IR, the Pats are very thin at receiver.

  26. “ Baker isn’t Darnold, ghost, lol crazy kid.”

Mayfield is a big mouth thin skinned child in a man’s body and not significantly better than Darnold

  27. I wasn’t going to say this but I have to be honest Not only Is Mayfield better than Darnold but in a few years he will be better than Brady, I guess in a few years Brady will be in a nursing home as well lol. That guys going to be running play action well into his fifties, but just probably not for the Patriots since he can’t get a new contract.
