Patriots trade Michael Bennett to Cowboys

When the Patriots suspended defensive end Michael Bennett over a dispute with an assistant coach, it seemed like only a matter of time before they’d get rid of him. It was.

The Patriots traded Bennett to the Cowboys today. According to ESPN, The Patriots will get either a 2021 sixth-round pick or a 2021 seventh-round pick, depending on whether Bennett meets certain conditions.

In other words, the Patriots basically gave Bennett away. It’s likely that they wanted to get rid of him but didn’t want to cut him because that could have allowed him to sign with another AFC playoff contender. Trading him to the NFC may have been a higher priority than maximizing the return they could get in a trade.

This is the third time Bennett has been traded in a year and a half. The Seahawks traded him to the Eagles in March of 2018, and the Eagles traded him to the Patriots in March of 2019. Now he’s in Dallas, which may be the last stop for a player who turns 34 next month.

  1. His best years were with the Seahawks and then his low ‘personality’ took over and now he’s a 7th round trade…

  2. He was outplayed by Adam Butler and Danny Shelton. Instead of cutting him, they saved salary cap $ and got him out of the AFC. They still have to play Dallas, but it’s not as if they fear him.

  3. Wonder if the Cowboys will just cut him when he sits down during the National Anthem, as Jerry Jones had threatened he would do to any player.

  4. I give it two weeks before he suspended. Cowboys just are way too desperate to ensure they win one playoff game a year.

  5. The guy can play, but he’s not a team player. Glad he’s gone. Martellus was a great fit while he was with the Patriots, but Michael never got with the program. Best to get a disgruntled player out quick.

  6. Belichick is just making moves all over the place. He’s going all out to make this year special. I love how he doesn’t hesitate a minute to correct himself.

  7. Bennett didn’t fit well into NE’s defensive system. He’s better when he’s not just being used to eat up blocks for the LBs.

  8. Good riddance. As a Pats fan I didn’t want Bennet or A Brown on the Patriots. There is no reason to compromise one’s integrity to obtain low character albeit highly talented personnel.

  9. Good player but bad teammate at this point in his career. He was just suspended a game by his own team and his response was “whatever”. Good grief. This will blow up.

  10. Two teams projected to be in the Superbowl year after year. One team deserves it, obviously, the other does not.

  11. This is an interesting Patriots season.

I thought last yr heading into the playoffs that the Patriots dynasty was about to end against the Chiefs on the road in the AFC Championship game.

I never expected them to keep up their usual reg season dominance, that their defense would be lights out this yr or that they would be 7-0.

This whole season has been a little surreal seeing what Patriots have done so far.

I honestly thought going into last year’s SB that it was their last hurrah.

I also thought the Astros would easily be up 2-0 after first two WS games.

Sports. Predictions. Good luck with that.

    So much for the ring.
    ————————————–
    He already has a ring

  13. All of the over excited Cowboys fans need to realize why Philly traded him and now NE. He doesnt like rotations where he doesnt get majority of snaps. He complained with Philly and then argued with NE coordinators about philosophy. Very good d-lineman, mouth attitude and head case issues makenit tough to employ him.

  14. Patriots traded for him to fill a role and he said all the right things, but when it came to the actual follow-through he wasn’t willing to have any of it. It’s too bad, because he definitely has a bit of gas left in the tank. For the Patriots though, getting him off the books is a positive and there’s so many solid leaders on that defense there’s really no need for him– he would have just been a luxury if he had played nice.

  15. The Patriots signed Bennett and received a 7th round pick for a 5th rounder. If they are getting back a 6th or a 7th it’s not a big hit for someone you don’t need and you pick up the cap space.

  16. Patriots made two low-character signings in AB and MB and both cost them. That said, it was a price they could ofer to pay for the potential upside. Unlike terrible teams, the Pats cut their losses and move on quick.

  17. Cowboys fans can rejoice forgetting the fact this is the 3rd team to trade him in a year and a half. Somehow you probably got taken in this deal

  18. I can’t say this is good or bad-i don’t know. What i do know is BB has been defaacto general manager and head coach of the patriots since 2001.

His team has appeared in 9 superbowls and won 6 during this time period,

During this time period the Cowboys and JJ have won zilch.

  19. This low character, bad teamate, hates America stuff is just a bunch of horse hockey. The guy was frustrated because he wants to PLAY FOOTBALL. The Pats scheme changed from a 4-3, that fits Bennett, into what they’re doing now. Due to the emergence of players like JCollins, AButler, DShelton, etc. You know, a top 3 D, at a minimum. He didn’t like being a situational pass rusher. Chris Long didn’t either. Pats needed cap room. He wasn’t needed. End of story.

Never thought I would see Jerry fleece BB.
    ——————
Let us know when you actually do.

  21. Patriots just needed a trade partner to take on the salary and open up that cap space. Curious to see what their next moves will be now that they have space and roster spots available.

  22. Fleeced? What a joke. Pats got something for a guy they were gonna release. Not much, but with all the draft day trades the Pats make, an extra pk always helps.

  23. I believe this is a solid pick up by the Cowboys.
The Bennett family offers certain challenges,
however, the Cowboys are quite aware.
The weakness of the Cowboys defense is inside
tackles on the defensive side. If Bennett can bring
some strong run defense with some inside pass rush,
the Cowboys defense will be better.
The way Marinelli substitutes could also help Bennett be
successful. Hopefully he will but in ..always the big
    question with the Bennett family.

  24. If he was good enough he would have gotten the snaps. That’s the “philosophy” he was arguing. BB gave up a 5 and will get back two 7s or maybe a 7 and a 6. It’s not the worst result he’s ever gotten wheeling and dealing.

  27. This tells you what Belichick thinks of Bennett and the Cowboys. They play in a month. Here, take him for a 7th round pick.

    ——

They already have 7 wins, soooo……

  30. The Eagles would kill to have someone as stable as Bennett at DE. They traded him away, allowed Long to retire – all these guys wanted to do was play more. Instead they are left with guys giving half effort and no heart. Cowboys got a solid pick up. Win/ Win for both clubs.

  31. Dallas is home to CVI Medical, which is a wheelchair warehouse, so you just know he is popping his knuckles with excitement!

  32. Two years in a row where the pats trade a 5th rounder and loose the trade . First Gordon and now Bennett
    ——-

Yeah but they freed up salary cap space and we all know how hung up on that you are….

  33. Never made sense that they brought in a malcontent loser from a team who’s invisible dynasty was shattered by Malcolm Butler and when #72 was last seen being rag dolled by Gronk. But at least Seattle can say that they beat Peyton in the playoffs, a claim that a dozen other teams can make.

  34. Respect, this is how you deal with someone who isn’t bought in. Adios.

Pats may not have the 49ers defense, but you can’t help but like this move

    ————-

Umm, the Patriots have the best rated defense across the board.

  35. It frees up 2.6+ mil in Salary Cap for o-line/wide receiver. Add that to what they had available and what they are saving on Gordon assuming Sanu fit under the Mason restructure, could there be just a little bit left over for The Blountman as a Fullback in training? Oh pretty please?!

  36. “It’s America. You can voice your opinion about how you feel about certain situations. That’s what I did,” Bennett said after returning from his suspension.

You’re correct Mr. Bennett. And the government didn’t jail your for it.

  37. BB is certainly on a mission before the trade deadline.

Truth be told though, if anyone would analyze the extent of the recent roster and salary cap decisions and implications (from 2019-2021) since the AB meltdown, the AB will go down as one of the worst decisions of his career (where the team is now versus where the team was pre-AB).

It would be nice to have a mulligan on that one. AB is a lightening rod to any roster he is part of.

  38. People can criticize the Patriots all they want for the players they pick up and then subsequently get rid of…..but all they do is WIN. So, they’re definitely doing something right.

  39. I did NOT see this one coming. Very surprised that Dallas purposely brought in ANYONE with the last name of “Bennett”. Ever. LOL

That being said, he isn’t a BAD player. While this COULD work, it probably won’t.

  40. It used to be that NE could pick up veterans with a little baggage and, for the reward of a real opportunity to win a Super Bowl every year, these guys would find a way to type the line for 7 months. Not these kids. Clearly damaged by their parents and entitled by our current paradigm where failure is praised and excuse are the order of the day.

  41. I knew this marriage would never last. A team that became a dynasty by demanding each player do his job + A player who is in the Dictionary under Finger Pointer.

  42. Why? He’s not that good, and he’s going to get more media attention which is going to exacerbate his character flaws. Richard must really love the guy, it’s the only reason I can think that Dallas would even go down this sad, dark, and frustrating road.

He’ll be hiding from the cops in the corner of the Cowboys locker room before the season is over. Book it!

    —————————-
Actually no he wont be doing that at all. And if there is anyone in Texas that wants to go after Bennett for his attitude those same cops he likes to criticize so much will be the ones coming without hesitation to do whatever it takes to protect him, including putting their own selves in danger if needed.

  44. I guess he didn’t want to retire with a ring like his Brother All he had to do was keep his mouth shut and do what he was assigned to do and he would of experienced what most NFL players Dream about.

  45. This is quite a tough hit for the patriots. They’re porous defense has already allowed two touchdowns in seven games. Without Bennett, who hardly contributed, how will they stop anybody?

Hung up and clueless. These idiots don’t seem to get that BB doesn’t put the team in cap hell, so luxuries like even trading for Bennett as a contingency plan for losing Trey Flowers, has nothing to do with “cap hell” when you so many people on rookie deals or playing UDFAs who cost pennies, even if playing like veterans.

These facts are WHY, trying out Antonio Brown or seeing if Bennett wants to try for one last ring, can even happen in the first place.

Other teams don’t have these luxuries because no team is run better than how BB does it.

I will say this is the first year, he hasn’t had like 7-10 mil in space as leverage to take on a couple of bigger mid-season contracts in trades, but again, the team is so loaded on D, it’s not an issue.

BB is so many steps ahead of the league, that if he wanted the team to go -1 and 10 the rest of the way, he might just find the loophole and make it happen. Fortunately for Pats fans he wants the team to compete in the playoffs again.

  52. Remember when Patriots fans were giddy about getting Bennett? “What a brilliant move by BB.” Yet another “brilliant” move that turned out to not be so brilliant but Patriots fans will use revisioninst history and deny it ever happened.

  53. I think out of respect for the Bennetts BB found him a win win situation and took a hit on the return. He could have sent him to Washington. Instead he’s on a division leading team that gets the most media attention in the NFL.

I think BB likes him, but he wasn’t going to be able to play how he wanted. Couldn’t trade individual recognition for playing time and sacks for achieving team goals. He won’t have to in Dallas.

  54. It wasn’t just a 7th round pick, he got a raise as well. I think he was traded last year when he said he wouldn’t take a cut. But it’s Bennett, so the story has to twist.

So the Patriots trade a 5th for Bennet and a 7th, try him out, discover the league’s best D doesn’t need him and trade him and his contract to Dallas for 7th.

Seems like a pretty cheap experiment when you give what is likely to be one of the last picks in the 5th round and get back two 7th rounders likely to be in the middle of the round.

Patriots win even when they lose.

Denial is part of the Patriot way.

  60. I can see a few reasons the Cowboys traded for Bennett.

1 – Only costs 1.8 Million in cap space

2 – Tyrone Crawford went on IR last week – upgrade

3 – Reunites Bennett with Kris Richard who was defensive coordinator during Bennett’s three Pro Bowl years

4 – Bennett can play DE and flex inside on passing downs

For a 2021 6th or 7th round pick – Low risk and high reward
