Sunday Night wrap-up: The Aarons lead the Packers to win

Getty Images

Aaron Rodgers is good at throwing the football, but we knew that already.

His ability to make plays with his feet — and running back Aaron Jones‘ ability to catch big plays — became a key Sunday night, as they led the Packers to a 31-24 win over the Chiefs.

With the Chiefs trying to keep Rodgers under pressure by blitzing often, Rodgers was able to keep the Chiefs off-balance with a few nice scrambles, allowing him to do what he does best.

And when he can keep a defense guessing, he can do what he does best. A pair of runs (for 15 and 9 yards) came on the fourth-quarter possession when he threw one of his prettiest passes, which went on the stat sheet as a 3-yard touchdown to Jamaal Williams.

But that required Rodgers evading a rush, running backward, and dropping the ball in the bucket as he was going down from about 28 yards away from Williams in the back of the end zone.

He could only grin when he got to the sidelines, after making one of the throws that few can.

Here are five more things we learned during Sunday Night Football:

1. The other thing Rodgers is really good at is recognizing a mismatch.

When the Chiefs tried to cover Jones with a linebacker, Rodgers made them pay.

In the fourth quarter, Jones turned a quick pass into a 67-yard touchdown, using his speed to turn a routine play into a big one.

Jones and running Jamaal Williams each had a pair of touchdowns (two receiving for Jones, one rushing and one receiving for Williams), providing the kind of complement the Packers desperately need while they’re without Davante Adams.

Jones finished with 159 receiving yards, including a 50-yarder in the first half which appeared to be a touchdown before he was ruled to have stepped out of bounds. He also ran for 67 yards.

2. Chiefs quarterback Matt Moore‘s not one to be awed by being thrown into situations he wasn’t expecting.

The veteran backup has stepped in as a starter before, and has even done so on SNF.

In 2009 when he was with the Panthers, he led them to a win over the Brett Favre-led Vikings, throwing for 299 yards and three touchdowns.

Sunday, he was 24-of-36 for 267 yards and two touchdowns, a creditable performance and the kind that would beat many teams.

3. The Chiefs punted it to the Packers with five minutes and 13 seconds left, on fourth-and-3 from their own 40, down by a touchdown.

They didn’t get the ball back.

It was a curiously conservative call for a team that was missing three starters on defense.

Playing without defensive ends Chris Jones and Frank Clark and cornerback Kendall Fuller, the Chiefs didn’t have the manpower to play the Packers straight-up, but with the game on the line, the Chiefs asked the leftovers to get the ball away from Rodgers.

They did not.

4. With or without the injured Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs have plenty of guys who can make plays.

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce continues to make plays at a ridiculous rate.

He topped the 450-reception mark in the first half, in his 88th game.

That made him the fastest tight end to reach that mark in league history. The previous record was Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow, who got to 450 in his 89th game.

Winslow, however, either couldn’t or didn’t dance like Kelce, who celebrated in style after Moore found him for a 29-yard touchdown in the first half.

5. The Packers have two more games before their bye (against the Chargers and Panthers), but they could use a week off.

In addition to missing Adams, they were without a number of key parts with injuries during the game.

At one point, Jones was questionable to return with a shoulder injury, but he returned. Outside linebackers Za'Darius Smith and Preston Smith each left briefly but returned. Tackles David Bakhtiari and Bryan Bulaga each took turns receiving medical attention on the sidelines.

They’re 7-1 and feeling pretty good about that, but clearly they’ll be feeling sore in the morning.

  1. Aaron Jones is the best running back in the division. It’s not close.

    Maybe the Packers will give a 6th rounder to the Vikings for Cook. We may need a competent 3rd string guy for our playoff run.

  2. No Mahomes. Cheap win. We’ll take it. But just because my Packers have a horrible defense is no reason to let a third-string QB carve us up.

  3. Great game by both teams, KC is one of the the toughest places to play, and historically Reid is one of THE BEST coaches in the NFL at preparing his team when he has extended time to do so.

    A lot of people doubted GB, and the new coach, they are playing well and have a record better than many people thought they would at the midpoint of the season.

  4. The Chiefs are going to walk all over the Vikings next week. The Chief’s are good, I don’t care who’s under center.

  5. That last flag that got picked up?
    Special gift from the officials to Viking fans.

    PS: They really needed to show more of Mahomes on the sidelines.

  6. I really thought KC would try to play keep away. The Packers run defense has been suspect all season. Throwing it almost twice as many times and rushing it was surprising to say the least. Great road win.

  7. Two vintage franchises in this 100th year of the NFL did battle in one heckuva great game. Props to Chiefs and their fans for a seemingly classy game. Great win by the Pack.
    Game balls: Aaron (x2). One lethal combination.
    Lame call: Come on Pettine, it worked, but I don’t like the defensive scheme you ran tonight. Matt Moore was waaay too comfortable in the pocket for my liking.
    The Pack’s for real.

    First place sure feels nice.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I agree but let’s not get carried away. This one could have gone the other way very easily. If it had gone the other way I couldn’t have even been mad. KC played a great game.
  9. Football is a funny game. KC looked like world beaters for the first few weeks, then they stumbled and now tonight, missing several key starters, went toe-to-toe with one of the top teams. Entertaining game
  10. What a great, hard hitting game. Was very worried at the half but our new coach, unlike the old one, made some great adjustments. How refreshing!
    And Aaron Jones is a beast. He keeps playing like this he could be in the MVP convo with Cook and McCaffrey.
  11. As a chiefs fan, despite the score, I’m pretty happy with how this defense has played this last two games. 14 sacks in 2 games is fantastic. Also, two dropped interceptions and two unbelievable improbable throws by AR is the difference in this game. It’s trending in the right direction. AR is amazing.
    Matt Moore and the offense with a 3rd string QB and only down yet another lineman played their hearts out and went toe to toe with Aaron Rogers. Didn’t see that coming. This team has heart. When they get the team back and healthy I expect a great run into the playoffs.
    That being said we are coming off a week where Hill was fined 10K for taunting, giving the peace sign to a defender on a TD, yet the Packers can come off the bench and dance 20 men deep in the end zone and not even a flag. This after flagging the chiefs for hitting AR out of bounds but they let it slide when the packers hit Matt Moore out of bounds. That is some bull. And it taints in my opinion one of the best Sunday Night games I’ve watched in a while.
  12. If you had offered me a 500 dollar bet that the Pack would be 7-1 at midway through the season, I’d have taken that bet and then made reservations at a fine italian restaurant for next weekend.
  13. So how good is Mahomes really? The Chiefs were winning before him and now they look competitive with Matt Moore. I am shocked.
  14. The packers defense got carved up by a third string qb that was retired and coaching kids football. Whays funny is that matt Moore almost beat Rodgers and packers if it wasn’t for the kc defense giving up two BIG LONG td play late in the game. This packers team is very lucky to have only one loss. They’ll get beat by the top team . No problem. They’re a paper tiger. The vikings are better than the packers.
  15. Saints fan here with my popcorn ready. I respect what both teams did tonight in a very entertaining game. But the reason I’m here is to see what all the whiny Viking fans have to say. I still don’t understand why they feel the need to comment on a game they are not involved in. Is this a long running sour grapes thing?
  16. Great game. The Chiefs are legit. Talented roster top to bottom much like Green Bay.
    Got that *W*. Mission accomplished.👏
    Davante back for the Chargers
    One game at a time baby.
    #GoPackGo!🏈
  17. This from a packer fan these inside linebackers especially martinez our so overrated gets burned in coverage all the time never attacks the line and all his 2000 tackles aew 4 to 5 yards down the field packers would be crazy to extend that man
  18. Ummmm, hey coach Reid, have you been watching your defense all game? You can’t give Aaron the ball back with 5 minutes left because your defense can’t get off the field and Green Bay has been going on 7-8 minute drives all night!!! Stupid to punt on 4th and 3, I don’t care where you are on the field. They never got the ball back again. Predictable.
    From what I seen, the refs picked up a penalty flag against gb to end the game.
    ___________________
    What was the penalty? blocking when someone didn’t expect it.
  21. Arron Rodgers is the luckiest QB of all time….. that throe to Williams was all luck. Most of Hail Mary catches we mostly luck. The guy is just plain lucky.
  22. Great W but Packers REALLY need to clean up the issues with getting plays called in and getting to the line faster. No excuse for being 1st and goal from 6 only to lose 5 yards on delay game, then waste TO because yet again late getting to line, then settle for FG!
  23. Sit Adams another week. We don’t need him at the LA Chargers. Gonna be 80% Pack fans!! #GreenAndYellow
    What’s most impressive? All the different ways they are winning. Special team if they can stay healthy!!
  24. One play, the McCoy fumble gave this game away. Otherwise the Erin would have lost to a back up QB w/o the left side of his o-line. Had Mahomes played, Packers lose and all you cheeseheads know this. So bring it down a notch.
  25. This game had trap game written all over it for the Pack. KC had them running in the 2nd quarter. Great adjustments by Reid. No doubt McCoy’s fumble was the turning point. My favorite part was the Pack running the clock out with 5 minutes left. Great win against a tough team and thier great fans
  26. The Vikings fans will be all over these comments about Mahomes being out (and granted that obvi helped) but this is the 3rd week in a row the Packers have played a team with extra time to prepare for them (Lions and Raiders both coming off Byes and KC off of a Thurs nighter). Pack are dealing with their #1 WR too so Vikes fans need to calm down seeing how they were ready to fire everyone, before getting Giants and Wash back to back. Don’t forget, Pack get them later on in year too
  27. Y’all cheesers did pretty well tonight… I like the competition. You like competition? Makes things interesting.
  28. Nice win by Green Bay on the road, but maybe too close for comfort against a beat up Chiefs squad? I’m more impressed with the Packers run game than Rodgers’ two-yard dinks and darts. As a Vikings fan I’m just fine lurking 1-game back going into November. Game on.
  29. Great win – was having my doubts that way that the Chiefs were playing in the 2nd quarter. We really need to get some interior linebackers or put some safeties in there. Despite what the pundits say about Martinez and even Fackrell they just will not cut it when we play against great teams. Martinez may make some plays and may make a lot of tackles ( AJ Hawk made a lot of tackles but always 5 yards past the first down marker) but he is usually late. He loafed it on the Kelce lobbed touchdown that was his man and he didnt recognize it and he didnt hustle after him. I am not sure that we can beat some of the better teams like the Aints playing the way we have the last 2 games. We cannot miss the number of tackles that we have the last 2 games as well against the teams like San Fran and Vikings that we have left on our schedule.
  30. Remember the last time the Packers went all season feasting on second stringers or rookie QBs (or teams in the midst of a 4 game losing streak). That year was 2011. They built a 15-1 record, losing only to the woeful Chiefs (24-9) the week they fired their coach and replaced their QB with Kyle Orton.
    That season ended with a home loss in the divisional
  31. round to the Giants, who they beat on the regular season when the Giants were in the middle of a 4 game losing streak.
    So don’t get too comfortable feasting on the likes of Matt Moore.
    Embrace a challenge.
  32. I was at the game GB is good and they have good fans. I’m excited KC stayed close and made it a game. Missing Mahomes and Jones are two big pieces.
    Hoping these guys are the SB representatives. There could be nothing bad about Pat vs Aaron.
  33. Looked like a competitive game. Maybe KC actually has a defense?
    Friend mentioned while watching that the cameras were constantly cutting away to film Mahomes on the sideline. So we decided to keep track during 2nd half. From 10:01 2nd qtr to end of game (25 min.), the camera cut to Mahomes 25 times!!
    What’s with that anyway?  Have watched a lot of NFL through the years, and have never seen anything like it.  Hype machine must be desperate — maybe afraid we’ll forget the anointed one?
    That last flag that got picked up?
    Special gift from the officials to Viking fans.
    +++++++++++++++++++
    On a kneel down play, moron Jimmy ‘Fire Hydrant’ Graham (because he is about as slow as one, taking the place of Richard ‘Fire Hydrant’ Rodgers) decides to shoot out of his stance and ‘hit’ a defender, tempting the SKOL gods to lose that game.
    But hey, 7-1 is 7-1. My preseason bet with a coworker that the Packers would have a better record than the Cleveland Browns is looking pretty good.
  35. Glad the Packers are 7-1. Aaron Jones is having a great season — the Packers haven’t had a complete back like him in a long time.
  36. A-A-Ron has been playing well last two weeks. Keep it up, this is the product people expect from him (and what he needs to do)… that endzone corner toss was sick…
  37. Wow, the chiefs almost beat the Packers with a QB who was out of the league this past summer. The Packers are going to get crushed in the playoffs if they can even get there. Pathetic.
  38. Whoever was directing the cameras Sunday night must have a love affair with Patrick Mahomes. The cameras focused on Mahomes on the sidelines after every Kansas City offensive play. Mahomes got more camera time that Matt Moore did.
    It’s funny how refs only see holding when they are looking for it. Jones isn’t THAT good…
    \\\\\
    I agree. Holding is a lot like the strike zone.
    Did you see how badly the chiefs receivers were holding downfield on all those bubble screens and swing passes?
  40. “As a Vikings fan I’m just fine lurking 1-game back going into November. Game on.”
    2 games back
  41. That game was the dictionary definition of a shoot-out.
    Blow to blow. Toe to toe.
    Packers handled their own 3rd and 3 at the end way better than the Bears handled their last series, before missing the field goal. The difference? Matt LaFleur has confidence in Aaron Rogers and his offense to make a play. Nagy and the Bears? Not so much with Trubisky.
  42. The Packers now have more wins in 2019 than they did in all of 2018 and its still October.
    Let that sink in and consider that they have yet to play the Redskins, NY Giants and a rematch with the Vikings. That’s 3 wins right there.
  43. Now that was an entertaining game…the Rodgers throw to Jamaal Williams (which was supposed to be Jimmy Graham’s ball to go up and get) as he was going to the ground, was amazing. Lots of guys you could talk about making great plays on both sides. Give the Chiefs credit…they matched them punch for punch with a back-up QB,until time ran out on them.
    The illusion of a two game lead is meaningless right now, unless Packa Nation is worried about a tie with the Vikes, lets talk about this 2-3 weeks down the road when it may or may not matter. There is plenty of ball to be played, its only the mid way point of the season. Green Bay still has to come to the Bank in December in the midst of a 3 game ending against divisional opponents. With games against Carolina,and Frisco coming up things could get really interesting in the NFC North.
    Definitely a different vibe with this group. Last year when the other team made a push, this team just wilted. This year is definitely different and finishes.
    Either player additions or coaching staff seems to have changed this. I’m guessing a combination of both.
    Agreed, way too much football left. I wouldn’t worry about 2 game lead if I’m a Cheezer. I’d be more worried about a back up QB carving up my secondary and only beating a depleted KC defense and team by 7 points. Green Bay has done it all year, start out fast then take their foot off the gas.
  50. A lot disrespecting from the Purples towards a great Chiefs team. I’m glad the Pack was on the winning end of that shoot out, but let’s give the Chiefs team and Matt Moore some credit for a great game.
    Matt Moore > Kirk Cousins
  51. Vikings fans cheapening this win when they probably would have lost to the one win Redskins had Keenum played the whole game has to be a record for “stupidity of a fan base.”
    They more than likely broke their own record.
    And will continue to do so.
    Also, to those bemoaning tie breaker scenarios, the standings are what they are. As of this moment, the Packers own tie breakers. If facts bother you, you have a deep-seeded problem.
  52. PS, the Packers covered the spread at Arrowhead, a difficult place to play.
    The Vikings couldn’t cover the spread against the Redskins at home, against a rookie QB, a washed up RB, and literally nothing else.
