Mike Tomlin: James Conner has an AC joint injury

Good news: Steelers running James Conner had his best game of the season in Week Eight. Bad news: He suffered an injury late in Monday night’s 27-14 win over the Dolphins.

A trainer seemed to mouth “clavicle” while looking at Conner, whose right arm was hanging as he left the field after being tackled in the fourth quarter. Following the game, coach Mike Tomlin told reporters that Conner is being evaluated for an injury to the AC joint in his shoulder.

Running back Jaylen Samuels already is out with a knee injury. If Conner misses any time, the Steelers will be down to Benny Snell and Trey Edmunds at tailback. They also have Tony Brook-James on the practice squad.

The trade deadline arrives on Tuesday afternoon. In theory, the Steelers could try to make a move, or they can explore adding an available free agent.

At 3-4, the Steelers remain very much alive in the AFC North. Baltimore has a 5-2 record, but they host the Patriots on Sunday. If the Ravens lose and the Steelers beat the Colts, the gap would be down to one game.

Baltimore holds the tiebreaker, thanks to a win at Pittsburgh earlier this year. But the Ravens also have a loss to the Browns; if the Steelers, who have beaten the Bengals and have another game at Cincinnati and two against the Browns, win those three games and are one game behind the Ravens (or tied with them or leading by a game) entering Week 17, the rematch would become an AFC North championship game.

  1. He was injured late in the 4th with Pittsburgh up by 13. Why was he out there especially with being already thin at RB

  2. Crap it would suck to lose Connor for any time over an injury at the end of the game, he played his heart out too. Good for Rudolph for finally finding his WRs, Diontae Johnson also had also played very well. With Rudolph, JuJu, Washington, Johnson, Samuels, Smell and Connor, Pittsburgh is awfully young and talented at the skill positions. They aren’t completely out of it quite yet this season!

    Go Steelers!

  3. Shame the Fins couldn’t have traded Drake for the Steelers 3 or 4th round pick. Pulled the trigger too soon …

  4. Ifs and buts. Losing Conner isn’t a huge loss, but it would take a seriously lucky run to catch the catch the Ravens for the title. I’m guessing the Steelers are what their record says they are and finishing 8-8.

This implies Samuels is already ruled out for Sunday’s Colts game. Read yesterday that he’s ahead of schedule and has a chance to play, so not sure where you’re getting that he’s out.

Conner still in late with the game well in hand. THIS is why we question Tomlins ability to manage the team. Just stupid.

Close out games using the run for clock control management, right? Jaylen Samuels is injured, Snell wasn’t productive last night (13 yds on 5 carries), and Trey Edmunds is what he is. Pretty much leaves Conner as the only choice in that situation. Maybe you could apply to be coach, though.
