49ers’ defense threatening 1991 Eagles’ record for fewest yards allowed

Getty Images

The 1991 Philadelphia Eagles, led by Reggie White, had one of the great defenses in NFL history. The Eagles allowed 3,549 total yards that season, easily the best mark ever in a 16-game season.

That record might seem unbreakable, given how much NFL offenses have improved since then. After all, the average defense allows about 45 more yards per game this season than it did in 1991.

But the 49ers are doing something extraordinary: They’re on a pace to threaten that 1991 Eagles record.

Through seven games, the 49ers have allowed an average of 224.4 yards per game. That puts them on pace to allow 3,590 yards this season, which would be just 41 yards more than those Eagles allowed, and the second-fewest ever in a 16-game season.

Simply being mentioned alongside the 1991 Eagles is an impressive feat for this year’s 49ers. If the 49ers can actually break that longstanding record, they’ll deserve recognition as one of the greatest defenses ever.

Lsts revisit this after they’ve played a decent team or two and then we’ll see.

They beat the Rams who played in the Superbowl last year and just beat the Panthers, who were ranked #3 in defense. I understand you’re still salty from last year when your Raiders got beat by the Niners 3rd stringers, 34-3, but you can’t argue facts. Niners 7-0, Raiders 3-4.

  2. 85 Bears are the GOAT.

Agreed. And the 2019 Patriots are the T-Rex. I LOVE that scene in Jurassic Park!

  3. While yards against looks good in the stat coloumn, pts allowed is the ONLY stat that mayters.

  4. 49ers fan here. There defense is awesome and fun to watch. But let’s not mention defensive records or anything until they’ve played the Packers and Saints later this season.

Those late 80’s early 90’s Eagles teams were fun to watch too with that incredible defense (Reggie White, Jerome Brown, Clyde Simmons, Seth Joyner…) but QB Eagles Randal Cunningham was fun to watch too. The guy punted too; once with 80 yard punt and a 91 yard punt another time!

  5. We’ll go with the common opponent argument. Baker vs 49ers 100 yards Nick Chubb 87 yards. Vs Patriots Baker 200 yards Chubb 131. Rams vs Patriots Goff 229 yards Rams 260 yards total. Rams vs 9ers Goff 78 yards total yards 157. If the Patriots are HiStORiCaLlY gReAt, then the 9ers are at least a darn good defense.

    This is ridiculous.

Like you know which teams the Eagles played back in 1991 to get the record. Or which pitchers Barry Bonds faced in 2001 to get 73 home runs. Or which teams the Edmonton Oilers played to score the NFL record 446 goals in 1983.

    A record is a record.

Because it fits your cherry picking. You should have probably realized that the Pats Rams game was from the 2018 season. Yes the Super Bowl is played in February of 2019 but it’s the climax of the 2018 season. It’s irrelevant that the Pats held the Rams to 3 points because that game was form last year.

  8. That Eagles team/era was under-appreciated at large since we CHOKED in the playoffs under Buddy…fair enough… but damn if we weren’t unreal. Steve Young/Troy Aikman have both credited Philly as the most-fearsome defense they’ve faced.

Or because it’s two opponents with virtually the same rosters on offense and same coaches. I don’t see you on Patriots threads checking people that consistently bring up the Superbowl or the past 20 years… If you want to just leave it at the Browns, that’s fine too. 49ers are nearly twice as good by that measure and allowed 3 points compared to 13.

  10. We all need to pump the breaks on the 49ers. Both the Niners and Pats have played super easy schedules so far, maybe one tough game each. Not there fault. It gets much harder for both teams. The difference is one of those teams has been winning for 20 years and the other has yet to be tested much at all. Let’s let it play out some for SF.

What are you talking about same team and coaches? In 2018 the Pats played a 4-3. In 2019 they play a 3-4. In 2018 Jamie Collins was playing for the Browns. Winovich was playing at the University of Michigan. Bentley was on IR. Jarrod Mayo was working in the media. The only defensive coach on this years staff that was on last years staff is Steven Belichick. Flores is gone. Boyer went with him. Bill Belichick has taken on a MUCH bigger role with the 2019 defense because of all of the new faces and inexperience on the Patriots defensive coaching staff.

  12. Yeah, whatever. I’m just excited to be able to watch the 49ers tonight, since their games are rarely broadcast on the east coast.

  13. So many bad teams this year. Niners and Pats certainly look strong but no doubt they have been getting fat on terrible teams so far. Pats won’t get tested much at all before the playoffs but the niners certainly will. AFC is pretty much already decided, but man the NFC race is a whole lot of fun this year.

  14. Who would have thunk it at SF? Before we crown them, let’s see how they do against Brees in the dome.

  15. What are you talking about same team and coaches? In 2018 the Pats played a 4-3. In 2019 they play a 3-4. In 2018 Jamie Collins was playing for the Browns. Fanboy homer.

Guess you missed the part where I said OFFENSES….Patriots defensive numbers are a product of the leagues easiest schedule. You know it. I know it. Everyone knows it. Browns put up 13 on you and twice as many yards as they did the Niners. Get over it. Niners have allowed less yards per game with a little tougher schedule.

    73 61 Rate This

The rams had 1000 yards and scored 69 points in the 2 games they played before the 49ers. The niners d held them to 166 total yards of offense and 7 points

  17. yep as Keith said Buddy was fired in Jan 91 it was Kotite, the former eagles OC, who was the coach in 91!
But yeah it was a bad ass Def!
RIP Jerome Brown and Reggie the minister!

Did the Eagles win anything that year?

Randall Cunningham suffered a season-ending knee injury during the first game of the year, effectively ruining the season. They had a good backup in Jim McMahon, but then he started getting hurt and they lost a bunch of games with their 3rd string QB. They finished 10-6 and missed the playoffs in the stacked NFC. Who knows how high they could have flown if Randall did not get hurt.

  19. The Eagles defense in 91 was top rated in every category. Bud Carson was the coordinator that year. Buddy got fired after the 90 season.

  20. Just when you’re expecting a mismatch, you sometimes get an upset. Kyler Murray is far from a polished NFL QB, but he has the ability to win a football game every time he takes the field. He has some abilities that teams aren’t used to seeing, and now Murray has a little bit of experience under his belt. 28-27 Cards!

  21. Their average opponent is ranked 21st in total offensive yards…and their opponents record is 20-40-1.

Their remaining opponents are ranked 10th in total offensive yards…and their record is 40-23-1.

Let’s hold off on projecting a 16 game total off of their first 8 games.
