Richard Sherman: “That was a humbling game”

All year long, Richard Sherman has been begging the media to say that the 49ers stink. As it relates to the team’s defense, Sherman said it himself after Thursday night’s 28-25 win over the Cardinals.

“We let us down,” Sherman said regarding a unit that had surrendered a total of 23 points in four prior games combined. “Myself included.”

And a player who rarely could be described as humble rattled off the “H” word multiple times to describe the prevailing emotion that should be infecting the defense.

“It’s humbling,” Sherman said. “It’s humbling for the defense. We need to be humbled. That was a humbling game. You need to be humbled on all level, and I think there is accountability on all levels. And we’ll watch the tape and we’ll watching it critically. . . . That’s not championship football.”

Sherman made it clear that the performance had less to do with the Arizona offense than it had to do with the San Francisco defense.

“They didn’t do anything that was really difficult,” Sherman said. “Quarterback ran from time to time. We missed plays. We missed tackles. We blew assignments. . . . It’s mistakes you can’t make.”

The 49ers got away with those mistakes on Thursday night. With upcoming games against the Seahawks (twice), the Packers, the Ravens, the Saints, and the Rams, they may not get away with those mistakes again.

  1. Well, Richard is truely remarkable. Every time he says something I’m further impressed with just how smart he is. Take this latest pronouncement for example. It truely is profound. Let no one be misled, Richard Sherman is way smart.

He went to Stanford, you know.

  2. Sherman still has a little gas in the tank and he’s real lucky that hes getting to spend it for a good team while getting paid. So many guys have to spend their last good years in irrelvence or as a benchwarmer making no bucks. Old sherman has the best of both world.

  3. Any fan with eyeballs would give Kyler Murray credit on some amazing throughs. He made a couple of accurate deep ones on the run that I only see a few elite guys make.

49ers are for real but they weaknesses just like any other team. The schedule now will be test.

  4. I think the real truth is that…

    The 49ers are a good team… not a great team…

The Cardinals are an average team… not a horrible one.

The thoughts going into this game was that the 49ers were great, and the Cardinals were Horrible.

The 49ers are good… but man o man. … it’s hard pressed to have an easier schedule so far.

  5. LOL love the trolls hopping on this article to hate like a short week, road close victory all the sudden makes the objectively legit niners frauds. Get out of town trolls. All this game did was silence the Jimmy G haters and add another facet to the game teams have to be concerned about.

The defense gave up 25 points to a rookie playing for a woeful team…….

  7. I love when players don’t do well and never credit the other team, it’s always “we beat ourselves, the other guys aren’t anything special”.
I never liked Richard Sherman and it’s too bad he landed on a good team.

  8. This dude is a psycho I think…

“We let us down” after holding a team to 23 points and winning.
That’s a very good outing on the road against a team that is maybe a little better than their record would indicate.

    Just. Shut. Up.

  9. Good teama fins a way to win when they dont play their best. I am a Hawks fan, and love the game. No mistake this 49ers team is good. They deserve their record but football is a fickle game. The end of the season results are the final judgement of where they stand. But I certainly respect them and give them a tip of the cap.

  10. Sherman made it clear that the performance had less to do with the Arizona offense than it had to do with the San Francisco defense.

Did you expect him to say anything else? He was angry at Russell Wilson and the Seattle offense despite all of the resources being poured into the defense before they broke that core up after they lost lead after lead as they declined. He’s probably the most self-unaware player in the league. San Francisco is more fortunate than good this year.

The Niners are lucky to have won the game and learned a lesson at the same time.

  12. I just really enjoyed watching Isabella run by him like he was a statue. But I’m sure that was all Richard’s issue with poor technique and nothing positive other team did. True humility from #25.
