Sunday Night wrap-up: Ravens hand Patriots their first loss

The plays Lamar Jackson made early were impressive, because they came so quickly.

The ones he made late were more so, because they took so long.

The Ravens quarterback led his team to an early barrage, but a long touchdown drive that started in the third quarter and ended in the fourth was the thing that pushed his team to a 37-20 win over the Patriots — and handed the Patriots their first loss of the season.

The 14-play, 81-yard drive chewed eight minutes and nine seconds off the clock, and at that stage in the game, the time was as important as the points. The Patriots had appeared to have worn out the Ravens’ defense, so a long drive was something Baltimore needed on both sides of the ball.

It also underscored an impressive night for the second-year quarterback, who found gaps previously uncharted in the league’s best defense.

The Patriots entered the game leading the league in yards allowed (234.0 per game) and points (7.6), but the Ravens dismantled them early, racing out to a 17-0 lead. During that time, they were run-heavy, mixing Jackson into a diverse attack. But Jackson hit passes when he needed to throughout the night, and his scrambling was a constant threat the Patriots had to (try to) account for.

Jackson finished the night 17-of-23 passing for 163 yards and a touchdown, and also ran for 61 yards and two touchdowns.

And for a night at least, he was a problem the Patriots couldn’t solve.

Here are five more things we learned during Sunday Night Football:

1. That late drive was a necessity, since the Patriots went no-huddle to keep the Ravens defense off-balance.

It worked, as they got to within four points on a couple of occasions.

By keeping the Ravens from subbing as often, it affected the amount of blitzes they could bring, and it was clear that’s what Baltimore wanted to do.

2. The Patriots are going to get the benefit of the doubt, because, well because they’re the Patriots.

But it’s also clear the gradual erosion of receiving talent is an issue.

When Julian Edelman coughs up the ball (which was returned for a touchdown by Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey), it’s shocking to see since he’s their most reliable producer at wide receiver. And while Mohamad Sanu fits nicely with what they have always done, it’s a far cry from an offense that in this calendar year has featured tight end Rob Gronkowski, Josh Gordon, and briefly Antonio Brown.

Gronkowski’s the one they miss the most (as the drop-off from the other receivers to the current lot isn’t as severe), and this game will only increase the curiosity as to how retired he actually is.

3. As much attention as Jackson gets for his running ability (and rightfully so), the Ravens adding Mark Ingram was a huge benefit.

The longtime Saints back had 15 carries for 116 yards, including a 53-yarder that showed he still has some burst.

And with his ability to run inside providing the perfect complement to Jackson’s improvisation, the Ravens have a multifaceted run game.

That helps keep teams honest, allowing Jackson time to find his many tight ends and other targets. Jackson completed passes to seven different teammates, a true cumulative effort.

4. Patriots coach Bill Belichick referred the Ravens kicker Justin Tucker as “the best kicker in the history of the league” last week.

So he must have been as surprised as anyone in the fourth quarter, when Tucker missed a point after.

Tucker was 264-of-265 prior to the miss. His only other missed PAT was last year against New Orleans, costing them a chance at overtime.

5. Speaking of special teams, the Patriots have always found a home for niche players, and the latest addition has already proven to be helpful.

Justin Bethel made a number of plays in the kicking game (recovering a muffed punt in the first half), fitting into a place that has always placed a high value on such players.

He was part of a de facto swap of players with the Ravens just over a week ago, and seems to fit right in.

  1. When the Pats gave it to Lamar he ran it. When they took that away he threw it. Ravens dominated the Pats. Defense played great too. Put the Ravens number two on the power rankings behind San Fran. Start the conversation; Lamar Jackson MVP.

  2. As a Pats fan… what can you say. Other than great game Ravens- they took it to us. Some self inflicted too with the flags, scoop 6 and Brady’s head scratcher pick. Honestly felt like the wildcat debacle at times. Oh well ya can’t win em all.

    Lots to work on. Hopefully the OL gets healthy and looks normal soon. 🙂

  3. I tried to warn fellow Pats fans that this would be the first loss. Jackson and Ingram were allowed to run rough shot over the Pats defense. Have to keep Jackson in the pocket instead of giving him outlets to run. The offense was picking up steam until the pick. Although the fumble 6 by Edelman and the awful blocking in the first half didn’t do the Pats favors. Can’t play like this against the Eagles. 8 and 1 is good but now Bills are two steps behind.

  4. Uhh – First legit winning team (save the Bills which they barely survived) on the schedule and they were dominated.

  5. Cheers to the guy wearing his Wilfork Jersey (yes a jersey during the work week) flying a plane flight Thursday who predicted a blow out once I told him I’m a Ravens fan.

    This wasn’t even close. GO RAVENS!

  6. Hmmmm….I read in an earlier game thread about how the Patriots were able to stop that high school offense. I guess that means the Patriots were beaten by a high school offense tonight.

  7. Pretty amazing when the team wearing the stripes calls a fair game and the Patriots opponent only has to beat the Patriots and not the team wearing stripes also.
    Baltimore is gonna be a tough team to beat if they stay healthy.

  8. Congratulations to the Ravens for winning their Super Bowl tonight. Now have fun watching the Patriots win the real Super Bowl in Miami in February.

  9. Cris and Al went over the top on #8 from the beginning. Who decides what player they are going to fawn over from game to game? It makes Madden on Favre look like criticism. WOW.

  10. 2. The Patriots are going to get the benefit of the doubt, because, well because they’re the Patriots.

    But it’s also clear the gradual erosion of receiving talent is an issue.

    ——
    The bigger problem is a missing running game because of the patchwork OL up front. They go one dimensional and as we saw tonight it’s not a great place to be.

  11. Statement win, congrats to the Ravens. Pats just didn’t have it tonight. Disappointing performance, I’m kind of glad they’ll have to marinate on it for two weeks before continuing the tough stretch. This team needed a test and Baltimore gave them one. Failed with flying colors, back to the books.

  12. “I look forward to a rematch in Foxborough in January.”

    Which no doubt will happen because of the awful AFC East Division. All good we play well in Foxboro in the playoffs.

  13. The Ravens are contenders. Lamar is the real deal and Ben Watson is 78 years old. This is what the Ravens do, play smash mouth football. Will savor this tonight.

  14. So what do know, once they played a decent offense, turns out that defense ain’t so bad ass after all. 37 points. Maybe playing that ridiculously easy schedule had something to do with the record

  15. I told you Pats fans, very good D with a lousy O do not mix well against the Ravens. I had the blowout. Pats are finesse and got punched in the mouth by a bully. Live and learn. Better hope that Isaiah Wynn is the next Anthony Munoz!!

  16. Too bad the Pats don’t get to play the Jets, Dolphins, Giants, Redskins, or Bills every week. That’s the only reason they always go to the SB, their schedule is a cakewalk

  17. Patriots have yet to beat a team with a winning record. Oh yeah, they beat the Bills. Barely! And the Bills are considered as pretenders with their easy schedule.

  18. The defense has major issues that need to be fixed and I have no doubt it will be fixed like every year but the offense is still a mess and Brady cant do it all by himself.His only weapons tonight were Elderman Sanu and Dorsett that’s it and there starting to use the running backs as deep threats .Half the Quarterbacks in the league would of been destroyed with what Brady has to work with.No more Brown Thomas Gordan and Harry missed more than Half the Season. The lack of a true deep threat is starting to show.There offense line is doing slightly better and that will improve when wynn comes back but again got to give Brady something to work on because if he retires next year Billecheck will get a rude awakening

  19. Gotta hand it to LJ for sure. Pats closed to 24-20 and Bal defense is gassed and he and their offense respond with a long drive to let the defense rest. Not many teams can do that to the champs these days.

    Impressed. Underestimated them.

    The Patriots finally play a decent team and they get exposed. Their Defence is way overrated and Brady only throws checkdowns!

    Can we stop with the “exposed” it’s so STUPID

    Unless every team they play from now till the end of the season
    Is going to have the QB become a running QB like Jackson
    They did “expose “ anything

    Raves have now beat 2 teams with a winning record
    Patriots have beat 2 teams with a winning record

    And as far as “all Brady does is throw check downs”
    Pretty sure he hit more passes down field than Jackson

    But hey good win Baltimore

  21. “Congratulations to the Ravens for winning their Super Bowl tonight. Now have fun watching the Patriots win the real Super Bowl in Miami in February.”

    First season?? The Ravens have knocked the Pats out of the playoffs en route to their Super Bowl just a few years ago….

  22. Oh no its the end of the dynasty, Brady needs to retire, Aaron Rogers is the new GOAT and the sky is falling. All this is going to do is make the Hoodie start dialing up defensive and offensive plays and then the Patriots will go on a rampage again making the haters cry.

  23. “The Patriots are going to get the benefit of the doubt, because, well because they’re the Patriots.”

    So true.

  24. great job by the refs in this one

    the grounding call was a beaute

    no way goodell was going to let this one get away

    not very impressed. they have no passing game and ne dominated the 2nd qtr. the edelman fumble in the 3rd was the killer

  25. The Ravens are a fun team to watch. I usually root for the Pats, simply because I enjoy their intellectual way of playing the game. A Bears fan here, by the way. But the Ravens have the guts to commit to develop a running quarterback and embrace his style and they deserve all the praise.

    But this game more importantly for me is to see that insufferable Pats fan Tylawspick6 getting silenced! Hahaha!!!

  26. That is a historically great defense? I thought coach Bill was going to make those adjustments and shut down the Ravens.. I thought he had a game plan for this..I thought all the Patriots fans knew exactly how the Patriots were going to play Lamar and shut them down..

  27. This game showed the 49ers are easily the best team in the NFL. Not to mention how bad New England’s offensive line is – that any team with a good to great pass rush will beat them in the playoffs (unless turnovers happen).

  28. No way, Patriots lost once they played a team with a good record? Shock, not really, any one honestly surprised? Theyve played no one. I’d be polite but Pat’s fans on here are beyond rude to everyone else so you get what you put out

  29. Well done Ravens 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼, If that was a highschool offense what’s that say about the Pat’s defense?

  30. Fans from teams that are 5-4 or 6-3, or worse – on here talking about how finished the Patriots are at 8-1.

    Yeah, happens every year after any loss.

  31. Tough loss for the Pats. They were caught off guard those first few drives and fell into a hole, but they were about to come back if it wasn’t for some bad penalties by the Pats and that Edelman fumble just changed the momentum, Pats were close to being up 20-17 by then.

    But overall it’s just a regular season loss, 14-2 is what I expect to finish, and this is a good wakeup call just in time for the bye week, hope they get it all straightened out.

    Ravens deserved it tonight, but you better believe BB is gonna be ready for them if they meet in the playoffs, will be a whole different game in Foxboro.

  32. Congrats to the Ravens. As for the haters coming out of their holes suddenly in Week 9, you aren’t even parodies of yourselves anymore.

  33. Last season the Patriots were beaten soundly by 3 bad teams and lost to 5 non playoff teams. We all know what eventually happened.

  34. “Patriots get the benefit of the doubt”?

    They’ve won 6 Super Bowls & last years champs..& have been to 9…

    Ravens were at home and played a great game…congrats

    Oh yeah…Pats are 8-1…Ravens 6-2…🤔🤔🤔

    When the most overrated team in history faces their first tough opponent. Would they even be a playoff team in the NFC West?
    ——
    It wasn’t their first tough opponent, just the first one they lost to. Pats put up numbers against this Baltimore D. No so much against the Bills, but whatever helps you sleep. Keep disregarding the other AFCE team that BTW is 6-2.

  36. Clearly Baltimore was well rested, and very well coached, game-planned.
    NE’s first possession was a gigantic indication of where they were for too long in the 1st half.

    A Bye against a nicked up team is a defiinite edge

  37. Much respect to the Steeler fans and Patriot fans I see on here showing love for the performance of Lamar and the Ravens. I’ve always respected both of those organizations as a Ravens fan.

    To the Lamar “he’s a RB” haters, go jump off a cliff tonight. As I said after the Miami game, the kid is a baller. He’s humble, works hard, and is currently the best young QB in the league not named Mahomes. By the way, how did the “real QB” Sam Darnold do against Miami, the high school team, today? Keep praying he gets hurt haters, because right now, that seems to be the only thing that can stop this “RB” that’s playing in a “high school offense”.

    Okay, rant over. Much respect Patriots. Your D is fine and is still dominate despite the “overrated” comments from haters. This is just a very difficult Offense to prepare for and stop. Lamar is faster than everyone on the field, and he has the elusiveness and agility of a running back. You can no longer go Cover 0 against him because he can now make you pay with his arm as he showed tonight. And with those 3 TE sets they run a lot of the time, it makes it hard to load the field with DBs like what San Diego did in the playoffs last year because he’ll just hand it off to one of the power backs. Pittsburgh is actually the team I worry about the most with this offense because of how dominant and disruptive their front is. The way to stifle this offense is to have a front 4 that can just blowup the Ravens Oline and get in the backfield. Lamar looked the worst against Pittsburgh. Looking forward to that rematch down the line.

  38. The Pats lost 34-10 to the Titans last year, and went on to win the SB. They lost 31-20 to the Jags last year, and went on to win the SB. They lost 26-10 to the Lions last year, and went on to win the SB. I imagine the same meatheads who don’t know the game that are here saying the Pats are done are the same meatheads who didn’t know the game last year and were here saying that they were done.

  39. The world is a happy place tonight, the hated Patriots lost. People acting like it’s Christmas morning. The Ravens are a good team. But let’s not act like the season ends now. Did anyone think the Pats were going undefeated? Lamar is awesome, but everyone knows what happens to the running qb. It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when. Thumb it down, but deep down you know Lamar will be get hurt playing this style of football.

  40. .
    they stopped the run exposing how bad tommy terrific is this year

    I guess all those critics were wrong about Lamar… whoohoo LJ!

  41. When Lamar Jackson beat the Seahawks. I just thought, there was nothing you could do at times to stop him from getting a first down. The Patriots have a better defense so that makes this showing much more impressive.

    Tom Brady’s arm is cooked. He can still dink and dunk with the best of them. But those deep balls he was putting everything he had to make it go down the field and it had the accuacy of Tim Tebow. Earl Thomas will never get an easier pick.

  42. Where do you even begin with this one? Might as well start with where the Ravens went wrong.

    Cyrus Jones muffed punt, Mark Ingram fumble. 14 points for the Pats.

    As for the Pats?

    Penalty on the field goal attempt on the first drive, gave the Ravens 7 instead of 3.

    Two field goals from inside the five yard line, leaving 8 points on the field.

    The Edelman fumble, free 7 points for Baltimore.

    The pick play on 4th down that 210% would have been called if the Pats had ran it.

    Brady’s horrible INT.

    A penalty after a stop on third down that gave the Ravens a fresh set of downs on a drive that would lead to a TD.

    Missed call on LJ’s final touchdown run, his forward progress was completely stopped, whistle never blew, not to mention he was pulled into the endzone by a linemen which, to some people’s dismay, is still very much illegal. Would have forced a field goal, still been a two score game.

    Pats Haters love to point out how the other team got screwed/ screwed themselves over in a Pats win, it’s only fair they expect the same in a Pats loss. It took the Ravens best effort of the season, the Pats worst effort in about a year, and some help from the officials for Baltimore to pull this one off at home. All the same, congrats to them I guess?

  43. Since the begining of this season everyone was like: the Pats have weaknesses but hey, they are winning! Now that they’ve lost one everyone is on wow, how big issues they have. I bet you half the teams in the NFL would love to have thier issues instead of their own.
    But no matter if you are a fan or a hater the Patriots are measured to only themselves and after a loss everyone sees a world ends. It never did, it never will. I guess they are on to Philadelphia.

  44. I love hearing the Ty law excuses in here. More Roger conspiracy theories. Mumbles Belichick was at his best in the postgame. Keep the arrogance coming Patriots fanboys, it’s amusing.

    ————

    Do you ever NOT blame Goodell and whine when you and your favorite football team don’t get their way?

  46. Ravens played a great game. Their game-plan minimized the Patriots defensive backfield strength. I thought the Patriots played Jackson relatively well but he just made great plays, even when boxed in. I have never seen a QB fake a handoff that effectively. Ingram ran equally well inside and outside but the outside runs and swing passes killed the Pats D.

    The Pats came back strong after going down 17. The Hurry up offense was vey effective. Penalties and turnovers hurt them and that’s unusual.

    Brady’s pick was a was a prayer that should have been as effective as a punt but Sunu missed touching the guy who caught it. The intentional grounding call was a horrible call and with the holding call tight after it changed the game. The offside on a gimme field goal was not only dumb it gave the Ravens a TD.

    Ravens earned the win and the Pats need to learn from this game or se other teams try to do something similar. Most can’t.

  47. Someone forgot to call the nfl to inform the refs to help patsies win this game……the travesty!

  48. I told ya 2 years ago…guys like Lamar and Kyler are the new wave in the NFL. When Brees, Brady and Rivers are gone, this will be your NFL.

  49. “not very impressed. they have no passing game and ne dominated the 2nd qtr…”

    They dominated because it was handed to them with 2 turnovers and short fields. Be honest…NE played well in the 3rd with the no huddle, that was about it.

  50. Hats off to the ravens for their 2nd regular season win vs the pats. they had 2 extra weeks to prepare and it showed the pats looked tired after playing Cleveland having to play vs 2 teams coming off bye weeks in a row is not an easy task.

  51. Who did Brady have He had Sanu Elderman and Dorsett that’s it.No more Gronk Brown Thomas Gordon and Harry missing Half the Season of course he is going to struggle. Put half the Quarterbacks in this league in that situation the offense would be a train wreck.If Brady retires next year this system of having tier 2 and tier 3 wide receivers to win wont work anymore

  52. “been exposed”, “finally played a real team”, etc. Cue the “end of the dynasty” talk. Its one game. Pats O was slow to start and the D was a little shocked in the 1st qtr. Kudos to the Ravens.
    But without Lamar, Ravens are a little pedestrian. He’s a terror to run, but his passing is average. His first 4 for 4 passes traveled about 9 total yards in the air. However, I didn’t see any shouts of “dink and dunk!” like Brady used to get.
    NE actually kept Lamar relatively in check, averaging only 3.8 yards per (his season average is 7). Ingram was the surprise.
    Expect NE to bounce back.

  54. Well,it was bound to happen,but it’s only one. You just have to tip your hat to the Ravens,go into the bye week and work on things. I think the Pats will come out of that bye week looking much better. Can’t turn the ball over. That was the killer.

  55. Woke up this morning seeing the results of the game….not surprised at all. The Cheats have had a very easy schedule so far and the Ravens can run the ball and use up clock keeping Tammy on the sidelines. As usual the fanboys have been believing their press clippings and fail to have a grasp uf football reality. The Ravens aren’t that go as they struggled to beAt the Steelers having to cheap shot the 2nd string QB to win so I wouldn’t anoint them as Champs yet. So enjoy tour crow fanboys in your usual gracious way.

  56. The Pats fanboys can now STOP about how this defense is the best ever. They had played NOBODY that was any good (other than the Bills). I know you can only play who is on your schedule, but last night’s game showed that their defense can be mortal…

  57. You know why pats fans are hated? Read these comments! What makes you think that after your cupcake first 8 games you’re going to be seeing anybody in January? You’ve played nobody…. NOBODY.

    You’re offense isn’t good. In fact it’s very average. The offensive line is just awful, and Tom couldn’t even side step a sack last night. You can only play who is in front of you, watch out for the last 7 games.

    They are a dink and dunk team without Gronk. It won’t last. Love Tom, but this line could end his career.

  58. I knew the Ravens were dangerous, but they were a lot better than I expected and delivered a no-questions beat down.

    This NE team is in for a rough ride the next several weeks.

  59. This NE team is in for a rough ride the next several weeks.

    It was so obvious except to the fanboy airbags such as yourself. HomerVision Channel couldn’t help the outcome of that butt kicking. Sweet ….very sweet.

  60. Looks like all the talk was true,the Pats up to this game have played a patsy schedule to remain unbeaten.its too bad they are in a division where they get to play super bad division rivals twice a year to pad their record every year.let them go on to the playoffs,good teams are not in fear of them.

  61. My first time watching Jackson play! I expected a wild, running-all-over-the-place QB. Not the case! He was poised and fairly accurate. Seemed to only run when needed or called. NOT RGIII from what I saw. If and when they play the Pats again, it will be interesting to see how BB plans for him. You know he will!!

  62. Lamar Jackson MVP. Please, insert Bill Parcells comments here. I saw alot of sidearm, IE bad mechanics. After he recovers from his first ACL injury, then let’s see how his career goes. It’s only a matter of time. Not wishing ill on the guy, just pointing out the reality of the run first qbs.

  63. Watched that game with a guy that seldom watches football. Said Ravens were tough to watch and game was ugly.

  64. Great, complete game by the Ravens. Lamar Jackson is a big problem right now, but I’d pump the brakes on thinking it will work long term. There are alot of smart people coaching in the NFL. My money is on the rest of the league eventually stopping his effectiveness.

    Extremes on both ends in these threads… the Pats’ Defense is not an all time unit, but they are still a top D this year. Their offense still has time to figure themselves out. Brady is playing pretty darn good, considering the OL sucks and there is no running game and no deep threat at all. The Ravens have two great back to back wins, but its the middle of the season. They’ve won one playoff game since Ray Lewis retired in 2012. ONE. Let’s see how they do over the long haul.

    The one good thing about the Ravens winning is the rest of us who don’t root for the Ravens don’t have to listen to Whinebaugh stand at the post-game press conference and do his Joe Piscopo impression of Doug (and Wendy) Whiner. He’s a very good coach, and I respect him a lot, but I’ve never seen a bigger crybaby in my 43 years of watching the NFL.

    Pump the old brakes on the Ravens. The D sucks and they barely beat crappy Arizona at home. You saw what NE did to Miami. Baltimore beating Miami in their situation is not impressive.

    And, like with all gimmick QBs who are limited and run a lot, they fade as the season goes.

    Wait until Baltimore plays someone good before claiming they’re in the same class with NE and KC. it’s beyond insulting.’

    NE will expose and demolish Baltimore and we’ll never forget Whinebaugh’s involvement in Framegate II either.
    _______ _

    I remember your brash comment and prediction above from Sept. I guess we can consider NE a good team that Balt. just played and beat?

  66. Hard to believe the Patriots fans who travelled to Baltimore to watch their team get clown stomped are every bit as obnoxious as those online, but it’s true. The inane comments here reflect the idiocy they display in public where they seem dead set on ruining the experience for everyone.

  67. All the preening and fawning aside, Rushbo was and still is right aboit some things, Lamar Jackson looked like a decent back up caliber QB. Not too impressive but with the level of talent surrounding him and the Ravens Defense was carried to another win.

  68. As a Pats fan that was kind of needed. I agree with the announcers at the end of the game that said it right, the pats have a lot of holes but until last night they didnt all show up at the same time.
    Seems like three key players either went missing or didnt play? Never heard their hames and if they didnt play that would have been a big deal.
    Anyways congrats to the Ravens who dominated the game and took it too em.

  69. We needed this punch in the mouth. a true Wake up call.

    We may have begun to read all the hype and believe it all.

    This young QB has great legs and speed

    The Ravens deserved the win

    Smash mouth football on both sides of the ball.

    We are on to the bye week and will regroup.

    Mid-point of the season and sitting 8 & 1. Lots to think about going forward and now focused on Philadelphia.

    We are not going away that easy after one loss NFL…

    Congrats Ravens…..for now.

    The REFS won this game! Nobody takes down the CHAMPS. NOBODY! The Ravens are a horrible team.
    ———————
    LOL!! Frequently wrong but never in doubt!

  71. The Patriots lose a few games every year. It literally means nothing.

    They lost to one of the better teams in the NFL, while the Ravens have lost to a couple inferior teams.

    Add in a few uncharacteristic mistakes by the Pats, that they almost managed to dig out of, and this is just another day at the office.

    The Ravens played well. Pretty much as well as they possibly could have. Which is a lot of good Information for the Pats to study for next time.

    I say all this as a Cowboys fan. Anyone who’s paid attention for the last 15 years knows this is insignificant.

    I’m not sure some people commenting here actually watched the game. Hate on folks!

  73. The Pats got outplayed last night right from the start. Just have to give credit to a really good Ravens team. The Pats will have a lot to stew on in the bye week,and hopefully get things tightened up.

  74. Yawwwn. It’s the same thing every year. The Patriots lose and now the sky is falling. People already forget the Pats lost 5 games last year including getting blown out by the Titans of all teams….and then won the SB

  75. As usual, most people will ignore how terrible Brady is playing and instead claim its everyone elses fault. Ravens defense isnt that good, they simply took away their strength (rbs), and forced them to use their weakness (Bradys arm).

    Don’t know how many times it has to be said-TP6 is a fake Pats fan who intentionally posts ridiculous inflammatory posts to make real Pats fans look bad.

    Congrats to the Ravens. But honestly I wouldn’t take too much away from this game- it’s not the end of the Pats or their Defense, nor were they “exposed”.

    Weirdly, I thought Brady (not the punt/pick obviously) played well overall considering. He knew how to solve it, just didn’t have the personnel- forced to use 11 package entire second half- They did finally bench Sony instead of wasting downs on him. Brady’s in pocket movement was excellent, especially in a hostile envoroment

    Again, congrats to the Ravens though.

  77. It’s funny to see all the Pats fans on this thread show kudos and a tip of the cap to the Ravens. While at the same time the haters begin their annual the-Pats-are-done party.

  78. Those they declare the Patriots dead, need to put their money where their mouth is. The casinos love people who shoot their mouth off. It’s the nature of the beast. Cmon, cash in your savings, big shots !

  79. Great game by the Ravens. Pats D is just as at fault as the O. Hopefully we get to try again in Foxboro.

    As usual, most people will ignore how terrible Brady is playing and instead claim its everyone elses fault. Ravens defense isnt that good, they simply took away their strength (rbs), and forced them to use their weakness (Bradys arm)

    My god you people are dumb

    It was his “arm” and the no huddle that kept them in the game.
    JE 10 catches 89 yards
    Sanu 10 catches 90 yards.

    It’s almost like you people don’t know what you’re watching

  81. I heard the same thing last year after we lost 34-10 to the Titans…..We all know who will be there in the end…..Ravens had better hope they win in the next few years because Jackson will not hold up running as much as he does…Pats will hoist Lombardi #7 in February!

    All the preening and fawning aside, Rushbo was and still is right aboit some things, Lamar Jackson looked like a decent back up caliber QB. Not too impressive but with the level of talent surrounding him and the Ravens Defense was carried to another win.

    ~~~~~
    I’m not sure some people commenting here actually watched the game. Hate on folks!
    ——
    Watched that game and several other Ravens games. In each of them Lamar “The Myth” Jackson has looked, despite the fawning all over him saying otherwise, pedestrian and run of the mill. About like a poor mans Michael Vick, at best.
    Hard to believe the Patriots fans who travelled to Baltimore to watch their team get clown stomped are every bit as obnoxious as those online, but it’s true. The inane comments here reflect the idiocy they display in public where they seem dead set on ruining the experience for everyone.
    ____________
    Have you read ALL of the comments? There are a lot of us Pats fans on here who are giving the Ravens credit for outplaying them. We aren’t all obnoxious as you think.
    The Patriots lose and now the sky is falling. People already forget the Pats lost 5 games last year …
    ————–
    also true for most of the contending teams as the season progresses and adjustments are made … no one is going undefeated.
  85. Have you read ALL of the comments? There are a lot of us Pats fans on here who are giving the Ravens credit for outplaying them. We aren’t all obnoxious as you think.
    Yes I have read all the comments and some are actually written to sound like an adult wrote them. By and large most are the same fanboy bs short on praise to the team that butt whipped them and the constant arrogance seeps in because fanboys are just that way……obnoxious. Sorry the truth hurts.
    This NE team is in for a rough ride the next several weeks.
    It was so obvious except to the fanboy airbags such as yourself. HomerVision Channel couldn’t help the outcome of that butt kicking. Sweet ….very sweet.
    ————————————-
    Don’t you think its sad to invest so much time on the Pats? You use “homer” and “fanboy” like its a slur. Grumpy old men got to be grumpy I guess.
  87. The Patriots made some mistakes in the most critical moments giving away many free points and leaving many points out on the field. That usually never happens and I doubt it would happen again if they played a second time.
    The off sides turned a FG into a TD (+4 free points to the Ravens)
    Edelman fumbled for TD (+7 free points to the Ravens)
    White tripping and falling just short of a TD (+4 free points to the Ravens)
    That’s at least 15 points of breaks going towards Baltimore.
  88. Terrible Chiefs defense gave up 28 to the Ravens and a TD of that was pretty much garbage time.
    The legendary BB defense gave up 37 to the same team.
    Maybe the gap between the Pats and the rest of the non-AFCE isn’t as big as we’ve been led to believe.
  89. I have yet to see the Pats D not get off blocks like in that first half. I believe the D will come back much better. The offense is one I would be worried about. Marshall Newhouse on the blind side is a MAJOR liability and you can see Brady sense it in the pocket. Great win for the Ravens.
  90. Had a spirited debate with a Pat’s fan…you can’t take away their record..but they hadn’t played anyone. Yeah..but are destroying every one…Well I guess Lamar isn’t Luke Falk etc etc….I mean seriously..the list of teams they beat was sad. So…let’s see how they do against some real competition..
  91. Bill Polian, where are you. You were one of the critics who said Mr. Jackson would never be an NFL quarterback. The game has changed and Mr. Jackson is part of the change. Not saying he is an HOF er like some of you have said Mayfield is,lol, he will have his bad games. But he is definitely an NFL quarterback. Go Ravens!
    The Ravens kicked their butt for sure. Great game plan and execution. Aren’t you always the one who never praises the Pats when they win and cry about the opponent, the refs, cheating, not playing teams of a bye week…. The list goes on with you but now you are criticizing Pats fans for things you do week in and week out. I figured you would be a little bit more mature at your age. Guess not.
  93. Pats were overrated because of the early schedule. Now it’s overreaction time. They’re still a good team, and will be there in the end. So happy to see a Patriots loss brought so much gratification to people with such empty lives.
  94. One of the few “legit” teams the Patriots faced and were blown out despite getting the ball on a short field due to a couple of turnovers.
  95. Not really a surprise Bellickeck struggles against running QBs. He was the last to adapt to the Miami wildcat, and as much as people love to hate on Cam Newton he’s beat the Pats both times he’s played them, RPO against the Eagles, ect.
    However, I think it should be a bit concerning that the Pats were only able to drive the length of the field twice in this game. They only drove more than 50 yards once in the Bills game.
    I guess attacking me makes you feel better so go ahead I can take it. My feeling Is its not that bad if you are not shooting at me. Just take the loss like a man and stop trying to deflect and make excuses and weasel your way around a solid buttkicking after gloating the Pats would whip the Ravens. Eating crow is very tough for you fanboys.
    How did the Ravens do vs. the Browns?
    Tipping my hat to the Ravens: they played better & won. It dropped the Patriots all the way from the #1 seed to the #1 seed.
    And Brady’s career winning percentage vs. the AFC North (27-7, .794) is almost exactly equal to that vs. the AFC East (85-21, 0.802)
    ——————–
    Attacking you? Not one bit. I just point out the hypocrisy you bring to Pats articles every week. I did not deflect one thing. The Pats got beat soundly. However, if they won what excuse would you make this week? You should realize the reason I respond to you because you post about the Pats multiple times every article, crying. You need another team to beat them so you can stick out your chest and gloat. The Ravens are good. They should win the AFCN and I hope there is a meeting in the playoffs. Keep up the grumpiness.
  99. Pats were overrated because of the early schedule. Now it’s overreaction time. They’re still a good team, and will be there in the end. So happy to see a Patriots loss brought so much gratification to people with such empty lives.
    Another fanboy trying to deflect the pain of the loss by attacking fans that enjoy watching the Cheats get beat. Just congratulate the Ravens and move on no need to try to insult people that could care less what you think.
  100. Just remember… BB is playing Chess whilst everyone else is playing checkas.
    The Pats D didn’t do a lot of different things out there last night. Things they typically throw at rookie qBs. Was some of that being limited by Lamars ability to take off? Sure. But alot is also BB and his penchant for not bringing a lot to the table in potential playoff previews.
    Honestly, when they did zero out and bring Collins Lamar was hard pressed to throw even when he saw guys WIDE open in the endxone…..
    Lamar will see ghosts if he gets BB in the playoffs
  101. I don’t need to congratulate the Ravens. I didn’t play. The loss doesn’t hurt. Pats have the 2nd best record in the NFL and are still SBowl favorites. Some people don’t need to wonder what people think about them, because everyone feels the same way.
  102. I’m not panicking for the Pats yet. They played a Mobile QB. which is very rare. they will learn from there mistakes and when the meet up in January (Once pats are at there peak) they will beat them
  103. Those crazy option plays where Jackson puts the ball right in Ingrams gut and waits half a beat to get the whole front to commit to the RB only to jerk it away and take off in the other direction were something else. With his speed it created superhuman play action. Hope these two teams meet again in the playoffs.
    When the most overrated team in history faces their first tough opponent. Would they even be a playoff team in the NFC West?
    ====================
    Somebody hasn’t looked at SF schedule lately lol
  105. One positive thing that Patriots fans can take away from this game is that the Ravens defense had a whole lot of issues stopping the hurry-up offense. If not for the turnover,that drive would have certainly resulted in a TD. That defense was gassed. Just a little something to remember should these two teams meet again later on…
    Cris and Al went over the top on #8 from the beginning. Who decides what player they are going to fawn over from game to game? It makes Madden on Favre look like criticism. WOW.
    ____________________
    Have you heard Collingsworth gush over Mahomes? Even worse.
  107. The question was not “if”, it was “when”. Just like the 49ers, they will have to work hard in november/december to avoid the wildcard round.
  108. For all the whiners complaining about the AFCE, they have 2 playoff teams & 0 winless teams unlike the AFCN, so some of that JV schedule is common opponents. Completely hypocritical to argue the schedule, but this is why the other 44 states are so insufferable
  109. The Ravens were much better and obviously deserved to win.
    I was thinking during the game that this is the offense Rex Ryan wanted to run in Buffalo, but of course Tyrod Taylor is not Lamar Jackson.
  110. Patriots went 11-5 last year (Not-so-hot). Lost all five to non-playoff teams(Overrated!). Got “blowed” out in Detroit and Nashville (Whaaaat?). Were punked in Miami on a hook-and-ladder play to lose by 1 with no time on the clock(BB out coached!). Were clearly the inferior of the final four teams in the Conference Championship round (Everyone else had better records), and yet….
  111. Are Pats fans still talking about that ugly loss in that beat down they just received? That’s sad because the Ravens ARE ON TO CINCINNATI!!!!
  112. Wins in November are only meaningful as tiebreakers for playoff game hostings. The Ravens need to hope some other team beats the Patriots and the Ravens can run the table. I won’t be surprised when the Bengals beat the Ravens next week. That’s how these things always seem to play out. I’ve seen this same song and dance for the last 20 years that the record is broken, and there is nothing left that even surprises me anymore. For the record, I hate the Patriots more than any other team, but until they find a competitive opponent in the AFC East this isn’t even worth talking about. Because we’ll still be watching the Patriots in the Super Bowl in February, and the Ravens will be sitting on their couches just like you and me.
    It’s just starting for Mahomes.
    The announcers’ lips have been on Brady’s keister for a lot longer.
    It gets so bad that any Patriot games I watch, I do so with the sound muted.
  114. Painful to see my Pats torn up like that, but I have to hand it to Lamar. He read the defense well, made good (if not exactly pretty) passes and continued to do what he does to less well coached defenses. I think it could have been a different game except for a few Patriots penalties and what looked to me like a bad call on the Edelman fumble. But by that, I just mean the game would have been close. I love watching Jackson play the game. Each snap has me on the edge of my seat. I’ts what football has been waiting for a long time.
  115. Browns beat Ravens.
    Ravens beat Patriots.
    Patriots beat Browns.
    How is this a statement game about either the Ravens or Patriots?
    Ravens came out hot on a night home game on national television with their hall of famers in the house to honor Ed Reed after a bye week to prepare. Patriots came out injured, cold and maybe overconfident that Jackson couldn’t read their cover-0 blitzes.
    100% agree. I was at the game and I couldn’t tell where the ball was half the time.
  117. Tell you what Jackson and Mahomes are turning into some of the best ball fakers I have ever seen. A few of those plays I had no clue where the ball was.
