Browns cut Jermaine Whitehead after Sunday’s Twitter tirade

After safety Jermaine Whitehead sent off a series of threatening tweets on Sunday, the Browns issued a statement saying that they were “totally unacceptable and highly inappropriate” and that the matter would be “further addressed internally.”

The Browns went public with how they addressed the matter on Monday morning. The team announced that Whitehead has been placed on waivers.

Whitehead started and played every snap in the 24-19 loss to the Broncos on Sunday, but did not record any tackles during the game. That was fodder for critics on social media and Whitehead responded to them with a tirade that got his Twitter account suspended before it cost him his job.

Whitehead was in his second season with the Browns and started every game for the team this year.

  1. He said he was playing with a broken hand so either he was hiding it during the game or the coaching staff sent him out there like that. You lost your career dude because you couldn’t be a decent human being. Like there are reasons to be upset but threatening murder etc…Poor excuse of a man.

  2. Wow! And I thought my Broncos were a train wreck (which they are). The Browns are just the gift that keeps on giving

  3. As a longtime Dolphins fan I just want to say… Thank you Cleveland and New York, if it weren’t for you this season would be too unbearable.

  4. There must be some mistake in this article. The way it’s worded, it sounds like the Browns did something right.

Should have kept Greg Williams as head coach.

Because his Defense could contain the playoff bound Dolphins????

  6. This team is still a disgrace.

It starts with the QB not being able to keep his mouth shut. Who didn’t know OBJ would be an issue?

From ownership down a total train wreck. Team needs to be sold, new GM, new Head coach, and a PR staff that can corral these guys.

When haven’t they been a disgrace and they have hired/fired many coaches and GMs over the years. Baker is the second coming of Ryan Leaf. Massive ego since college, loves to talk trash and can’t back it up. Loves to complain about the media. His on the field play, 7td/12int, looks like Leaf too. Only difference being is that Baker had a good rookie year that he can always fall back on. It’s however hard to fix egos like this. He has always been a jerk, set in his ways. Nobody is fixing that. He needs to be willing to change everything about him, and that will never happen.

You mean bounty gate Greg William? Gregg Williams is one of the worst and most overrated defensive coordinators in the game. He has been fired many times. His defenses for the most part have been terrible. He is the Baker Mayfield of defensive coordinators. Huge ego, loudmouthed, short temper. He is likely going to be fired AGAIN after the season

    Williams’ resume

1990-96: Oilers Defensive assistant, Linebackers and Special Teams
    1997-00: Oilers/Titans Defensive Coordinator
    2001-03 – Bills Head Coach – FIRED
2004-07: Redskins Defensive Coordinator – FIRED
2008: Jaguars Defensive Coordinator – FIRED
2009-11: Saints Defensive Coordinator – Supended for Bountygate, FIRED
2012: Rams Defensive Coordinator – FIRED
2013: Titans Senior assistant defensive coach
    2014-16 – Rams Defensive Coordinator – FIRED
2017-2018: Browns Defensive Coordinator, interim 2018 Head Coach – FIRED
    2019: Jets Defensive Coordinator

It is uncontroverted that Williams encouraged and promoted the maiming of players. He should not be anywhere near a football field.

  10. Serves him right. This was the right move by Cleveland. Threatening murder and using racial slurs… out to be banned by the league.

Hmmmm….well last time I check Ritchie Incognito is still gainfully employed by the NFL. smh…

Williams also just looks like a slime ball. That disgusting greasy hair, the goofy glasses, the air of arrogance. He exudes what he seems to be, a horrible human being.

It’s very arguable that Greg Williams should probably have been considered for New York and Cleveland’s head coaching positions. There were a lot of head scratchers hired as head coaches this passed offseason. Adam Gase being hired as head coach in New York after failing miserable in Miami and Greg Williams who went 5-3 as the Browns interim not getting hired to any head coaching gig is a huge one.

    Richard Sherman is that you?

  14. Just don’t understand the need to be on social media and say look at me. It cost his career, it cost Antonio Brown. You’re making millions learn something.

Be like Brady hire people to do your social media and build your brand. I guess you can’t fix stupid

  15. I four years he has a total of 66 tackles. When you’re a fringe player you can’t do stuff like he did. Still, I wouldn’t be surprised if some team signs him but I think he should fall under the personal conduct policy and be suspended for some of the stuff he said. Look on the bright side….if his NFL career is over he can always fall back on his degree from Auburn and teach English.

  16. I’ve never seen a group of people so clueless in my life. “BUT GREGG COACHED MEAN”. lol. In HIGH school we got rewarded for hard hits and game changing plays. Want to know what is consider one example of a game changing play? Someone getting hurt. Naive human beings.

    ___________

Yet his broken hand didnt keep him from replying on social media. Now days where no one bothers wrapping up to tackle, its this fish swimming upstream technique it fails so much and the hands seem to not have as much to do with tackling as it use to.

  18. Cutting Whitehead from the Browns reminds me of an old Billy Preston song………………………”Nothing from Nothing Leaves Nothing”.

  19. About time an organization stood up to these boys in grown up clothes. Players have no conscious or accountability in this league and take away from the few that do have some sense

  20. Rick Mirer had a good rookie season too…*shrugs*

Baker is that with a huge mouth and 100 commercials…

When Baker’s wife makes him go all the way back to get a straw in that one commercial he should’ve said no, I have film to study.

  21. Stupid comments. Social media will only get you in trouble. That being said I don’t think he deserved to be fired from his job for them. And I’m guessing if he was a better player he wouldn’t have been. As a white guy someone calling me a cracker wouldn’t get more than a yawn out of me. But once again twitter is a bad format for players to go near especially right after a bad game

But it’s okay to broadcast the N word from Bears players multiple times during the TV broadcast…got it…

I don’t think it is, but you can’t compare that with what this clown did.

Dude. He threatened the guy….he didn’t just call him a name. Only response is to cut him.

  24. Twitter is poison. If you’re on it get off it. Don’t start it if you haven’t. It’s a tool of the Devil. I don’t know anything about this guy other than someone said he came from being undrafted to starting in the NFL. He probably isn’t as racist and vile as his tweets suggest, but he must be addicted to twitter. Has a poor day and sinks his career with a decision to post some stupid stuff in a heated moment. I feel bad for the guy. If your on twitter it can happen to you to, all it takes are the right circumstances. Twitter is evil.

  25. The nfl as a whole doesn’t care about character not just the browns management. But they did get rid of the Twitter tough guy and keep the real life woman beater.
