Stafford on pace to lead NFL in passing yards (with help from Lions’ bad defense)

Getty Images

The good news for the Lions is that quarterback Matthew Stafford is having perhaps the best season of his career. The bad news is that the Lions’ defense is putting him in a position where he has to throw the ball, a lot.

That’s why, despite the offseason talk that new Lions offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell favored a run-first offense, Stafford is on pace to lead the NFL in passing yards. Stafford is first in the NFL with an average of 312.4 passing yards per game.

But here’s the problem: Stafford often passes a lot because the Lions are losing and he has to. In fact, in the three games the Lions have won this year, Stafford has averaged 263 passing yards. In the five games the Lions didn’t win (four losses and a tie), Stafford has averaged 342 passing yards.

That includes Sunday’s game in Oakland, when Stafford passed for a season-high 406 yards, but the Lions lost 31-24. Stafford threw the ball well, but the Lions’ defense couldn’t stop the Raiders’ offense.

Stafford has never led the league in passing yards. That may change this year. He has also never won a playoff game. That won’t change this year.

False. The Lions are passing because they have one of the worst running games in the league, even before KJ went to IR.

Mike Payton already dispelled this myth on Twitter:

Here’s this for absolutely no reason at all:

Stafford’s garbage time stats for 2019.

    Trailing with 4 minutes left:
    189 yards and 1 TD

    Trailing with 2 minutes left:
    105 yards and 0 TD’s

    Yards and TD’s by quarter

    1: 752, 6TD’s
    2: 611, 4TD’s
    3: 469, 2TD’s
    4: 604, 7TD’s

  2. Gotta love the Belichik coaching tree.

Matt Patricia, supposed defensive Guru, second year with team, 23rd in defense last year and falls all the way to 31st this year.

I don’t think they have had many defensive injuries this year either.

His record, for the 2nd straight year, will most likely be worse than the guy who he replaced, who was getting 9 wins out of this team every year but got fired for not getting 10 wins.

How much longer before he reverts to psycho school teacher during interviews again? Sit up straight, put some respect into that question, etc?

Is the Belichik coaching tree the worst tree ever?

  3. I wanted to say how sad it is he will waste his life on a floundering organization but he re uped all the time for da money rather then force the issue and go somewhere else. It must be the koolaid they serve in Detroit because the fans keep coming back too??????

  4. This article seems like a cheap shot towards Stafford and the lions. This case can be said for multiple qbs stats. When dallas lost 3 in a row and they fell behind early in those games, I didnt read any articles about how dak had big games because his defense couldnt stop anybody.

  5. I wish they’d trade Stafford. So he’d maybe have a superbowl shot. The Lions could get a mighty haul of picks for him, which they obviously need because the defense is terrible and the running game is nearly non existent.

Exactly! There are no asterisks based on QB stats accrued in the 4th Quarter. Besides, Stafford is forced to throw because Bevell can’t establish a run game. Also, look at his TD/Int ratio, accuracy and overall rating. Dude is playing at a very high level.

  7. Consistant site for Lions cheap shots and uninformed hit jobs… Oh, and being nauseatingly lawyer-ish and telling lots of people just what they should be thinking/doing. But, still, I selectively read…

  8. Philip Rivers 2.0, solid QB, but his team is never good enough to compete.
    —————————————
Rivers have had actually some good Chargers team throughout his career. Even now he has two solid RBs, good WRs, a good TE, and good defense too.

  9. Has MDS (notorious Lions Hater) watched the games? Yes, the defense is VERY bad. However, in the 4 losses and a tie, the Lions have led (or been tied) with 5 minutes left in the game. His stats are coming within the flow of the game and to suggest they are from garbage time is flat out wrong. Give the man credit for have a terrific year in spite of having the worst defense and run game in the league once again.

Don’t discredit Stafford like that. Rivers has had overall loaded teams most of his career and has done squat. Stafford is unfortunately stuck with the sorry Lions franchise and he’s carried them as much as he can through his career.

The Lions have one playoff win since 1957. Stafford has been there for 1/6 of that time and hasn’t won a playoff game. The criticism and corrective responses of others to your pipe dream posts about how improved the Lions are doesn’t make any sense. Ever think of that? Stop being so sensitive, the Lions have been horrible for decades and I still root for them. Who cares what anyone says on here, what are you the offensive police? Need a safe space pal?

No way have the Chargers been “loaded” most of Rivers’ career. I would say he had decent teams in the very first couple seasons under Schottie and has had decent teams in the last couple years. Of course he and those teams underachieved.

But for the bulk of his career inbetween, the Chargers have had the worst cast of players.

  15. Lions had been leading in every game they lost this year. Stafford hasn’t racked up any stats in garbage time, but let’s listen to a guy who hasn’t watched a single Lions game this year. Lions can’t run the ball forcing Stafford to constantly bail them out of third and long situations which he has done with remarkable consistency. Patricia’s horrible defense is wasting another brilliant year of QB play that would have any other team in SB contention. It’s flat out depressing.

  16. Stafford could have a career year and be absolutely the prime reason the Lion’s win ANY games this season, and still this off-season all we will hear from certain “fans” and from the media pundits is “but he hasn’t won a playoff game,” as if somehow it is Stafford’s personal failure that the Lion’s can’t manage to put a competent “TEAM” around him. Amazing but predictable.

Maybe I used the term “loaded” loosely, but I am speaking relatively, compared to the Lions, and I’m including the organization, coaching, etc. Rivers has had a lot more than Stafford has. Especially during 2006-2011, let’s not forget those 5 years, Chargers had a top 5 offense all those years, and some pretty good defenses too. Merriman, Cromartie during their primes. On O he’s had Tomlinson, Gates, Vincent Jackon, now Keenan Allen and Melvin Gordon. He’s usually been surrounded by Pro Bowlers at RB/WR. They do great during the regular season, but always fall short in the playoffs.

I’m not discrediting Rivers, I know he’s had it rough a few seasons and has carried them. But compared to Stafford I have to say Rivers has far more underachieved with what he’s had.

  18. Stafford is probably the most under appreciated QB in the NFL. IMO, 2nd best in the NFC north, and easily in the top 10 in the league.

****With ZERO playoff wins since being drafted, that’s another decade of failure added to the Lions deep rooted history of no playoff wins.***

No one really cares about your opinion, but is real entertaining watching you change your name repeatedly and get so defensive over the most mediocre QB in the league next to Philip Rivers.

When Trubisky out performs Stafford on Sunday are you going to need a suicide watch?

Get ready for another sweep kiddo!

Have never changed my name. There’s some other d hyphen that does that and poses as others.

If it was just Stafford vs Trubisky in QB competition, you know who wins that going away. I think Philip Rivers is a awesome QB. The Bears would take him, Stafford, Cousins,…..and about 28 other QB’s in the league over Trubisky.

Trubisky can run better, and that’s it.

I’m amazed at your confidence in a Bear’s sweep. Maybe, maybe not. Lions have won 9 of the last 12.

I appreciate being called a kiddo!

btw…..suicide is no joke. Many folks suffer from depression.

Takes one to know one “d hyphen” nice cover up, but two can play at your silly name change games, which was the whole point and here’s another one of your genius names.

Congrats on beating the Bears along with the rest of the NFL during the Fox and Trestman years. What did the Bears have 16 wins in 6 years…What a feat!! You have been saying the same pointless arguments across multiple names for years, if I had a nickel for every name change you’ve been using, I’d have a jet on standby.

You are right about suicide, its not a joke. Frankly I assumed after you watching the Lions only win one (1) playoff game since 1957 it might be a valid concern when you continually rip the 2nd year starting QB for the Bears that is having so much trouble in a broken offense. He still swept the Lions tho…..Ouch!
