Matt Patricia calls Mitchell Trubisky “a great player”

Matt Patricia learned one thing from Bill Belichick: How to talk up an opponent.

Patricia, the Lions head coach and former Belichick assistant, is preparing to play the Bears and their struggling quarterback, Mitchell Trubisky, on Sunday. And Patricia wouldn’t bite when asked about Trubisky’s struggles, instead gushing about what a fine quarterback he is.

“This guy, he’s a good player,” Patricia said, via the Detroit Free Press. “He’s athletic, he’s strong, he can get out of trouble, he can extend plays, he can scramble, he can run, he can throw. He’s got deep balls, he’s got great skill guys, so that’s the major issue that we have to deal with. He’s a great player, and we got to start there.”

Patricia has only coached against Trubisky once, and in that game Trubisky had perhaps the best performance of his career, completing 23 of 30 passes for 355 yards, with three touchdowns and no interceptions, and also running for a touchdown. Maybe Patricia doesn’t realize that Trubisky hasn’t played like that very often.

  1. That Matt Patricia, moonlighting as a stand up comedian.

Any non-delusional Bear fan knows that Trubisky, technically playing in his “senior” year of college ball, is far from great.

Trubisky seems like a nice guy and wants to be a leader, but he just doesn’t have it.

Great players don’t consistently overthrow or underthrow passes. There are times he must think his receivers are 3’6″.

Great players can adjust after the first read. If the first read isn’t available, he is toast.

Great players don’t regress the 2nd year after being in a new system.

Not drafting Mahomes or even Watson will be one of the biggest failures in the history of the Chicago Bears. Trubisky didn’t draft himself, so I don’t blame him. Pace owns this one 100%

  2. Well, let’s think about this. The opinion regarding Trubisky coming from a highly intelligent NFL head coach versus the opinions of various internet trolls. Which should be valued more?

LOL !!!….I think he has been watching Tom Brady playing in a Bears uniform !

  4. Well he gots his self 2 choices, yes he do.
One, he can praise Trubisky as an amazing QB, a sure HOF player or
Two, he can admit his coaching of his defense is abysmal and they couldn’t stop anyone.

    Whachew gonna do?

  5. The best thing that can be said about Mitch is that he has shown flashes of potential.

The best thing that can be said about Nagy is that he shows interest in the run game every now and then.

The best thing that can be said about Pace is that he should be fired. I don’t know whether Nagy or Trubisky is more to blame for the Bears’ current record, but Pace hired both of them.

  6. “Patricia has only coached against Trubisky once, and in that game Trubisky had perhaps the best performance of his career, completing 23 of 30 passes for 355 yards, with three touchdowns and no interceptions, and also running for a touchdown.” – Not sure how much this says about Turbisky’s plaing capabilities or rather Patricia’s D-coach capabilities?!

Oh, wait…. I know! He coach NE in the superbowl where they put up 33 point (they would win in 33 SB’s with this many points) still lost.
The Lions under his leadership were 23rd in total defense last year and are 31st so far this year.

  7. Maybe Patricia doesn’t realize that Trubisky hasn’t played like that very often.

    ——————-

Maybe Patricia realizes that the Lions have an historically bad defense. It would be ironic if Trubinsky having a good game against Patricia allowed Trubinsky to keep his job for next year.

Just like all the other Belichick assistants, nothing of value ever leaves Foxboro. I’m sure the Lions fans long for the days where the coach could get fired for going 9-7.

  8. If Nagy wpuld use a P/R option offense, the same type that was/is used with QBs Colin Kaprenick, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, etc, it would play into Trabiski’s running talents–instead of asking him to play in a system for QBs Brady, Breed etc… And, that would give NFL defenses trouble (& the Beats defense actual time off the field.)

But Nagy can’t do that. He would have ruined those QBs too

  9. Duh, he’s just a kid and only been a starter for two seasons. He will be MVP next year, lol.

    Completely agree

  11. He swept the Lions last year along with Chase Daniel. Lit up Slay with Anthony Miller.

Bears still got fleeced by the Raiders though.

  12. There are only 32 starting NFL QB’s in the world. If it were easy, the job wouldn’t pay so much. They’re all great QB’s. Trubisky has already led a team to a 13 win season. We can’t compare everyone to Brady.

  13. That’s the first positive thing said about Mitch all season long. Poor kid has a lost and stubborn coach and gets over criticized on the reg.

  14. So when MPs defense gets shredded by the Great Trabiski he can say I told you so……All these Patriot guys …did any of them learn how to win the games….?

I think the excellent play of all the Backup QBs this year proves that theory wrong. There are at least 34 QBs on rosters today that i would put ahead of Trubisky.

The problem is correctly identifying QBs and then putting them in the best spot to flourish. Minshew is not a great QB and he was on no one’s radar coming into this season but I would let him manage a game over Trubisky any day of the week.

Minshew would win games with that defense.

When have you seen Brady scramble and run?

  17. Well, let’s think about this. The opinion regarding Trubisky coming from a highly intelligent NFL head coach versus the opinions of various internet trolls…..
    —————————————————–
Gonna have to stop you right there. What standard are you using to say that he is a highly intelligent NFL head coach? He was a flunky under the greatest defensive-minded HC in history. So far, he has yet to prove himself anything other than that.

  18. He has to call him great. He knows Trubisky is about to carve up his defense for 30 plus points and over 400 yards of total offense. Like every other team has. Can’t say “yea he’s really been struggling” then go out there and make him look like the second coming of Joe Montana

Not sure how you missed that Patricia has a degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. That information has been widely reported.

  20. This a difference between respecting an opponent and spouting nonsense

Further proof if needed what all Lions fans knew, Patricia’s head is up his backside, Detroit deserves better.

First of all it was a 12 win team. Second of all he was mostly carried by his defense

  22. “He’s athletic, he’s strong, he can get out of trouble, he can extend plays, he can scramble, he can run, he can throw.”
    _________

The first six characteristics mentioned are just different ways of saying he’s a good runner. Then he finally said something about being able to pass because he realized he should.

Dude is literally a rocket scientist – and not the kind in the punchline of a joke. Unless of course you think schools like RPI give out degrees in Aeronautical Engineering to anyone.

  24. Everything Coach Patricia said about Mitchell Trubisky is true. Two things need to happen. The kid needs to play relaxed and play hard. He did after the first few games last year. It is torture to watch someone so talented be so timid and worrying about mistakes. Second, the Bears need to go all Baltimore Ravens and tightly tailor the offense to Trubisky and build the offense around HIM – see the success of Lamar Jackson.

ABSOLUTELY CORRECT! Not only is Trubiski the best running QB after Lamar, but the OTHER QB with nearly identical skills & physicality is now likely leading his team to the playoffs, ie Josh Allen/Buffollo. The Bills have worse receivers a comparable offensive line, fairly equal talent at RB and they have a good defense BUT NOT as good as the Bears,
    .
The difference the Bills (like the Ravens) have given the QB an offense tailored to USE his ability to run, and allow him to play loose in a simplified but tough to defend system. The

Bears SHOULD be able to do with Trubiski what thew Bills are doing with Allen.

ut Nagy is a “system coach” and needs to plug the perfect type players into his system – and its RUINING this kid. He used to be VERY scary when he ran; some NFL defenders actually compared his evasiveness to Mike Vick. Nagy is TERRIBLE at using the talents his players have. If he coached the Bills, Ravens or even the Patriots Id bet theyd all have losing records!

  26. I don’t know if Patricia does this every week but yeah, Belichick seems to. In fact, I think that was cut and pasted from the Belichick presser the last time the Bears played the Patriots when Cutler was still around. Don’t remember the final score, but I hoped and prayed the Bears could hold them under 50 – I don’t think they did.
