Philip Rivers disappointed in himself after loss

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers both started and ended Thursday night’s game with interceptions, and he put the loss to the Raiders on himself.

Rivers said after the game that his interceptions on the Chargers’ first two drives, plus the last drive, on which the Chargers got plenty of chances because of Raiders penalties, were disappointing.

“The two [first-quarter] interceptions and then eight plays not getting anything” at the end of the game, Rivers said, via the San Francisco Chronicle. “I’m disappointed I didn’t do a better job in those . . . spots especially.”

Rivers said his interception on a pass to Keenan Allen was a huge mistake.

“I just missed the throw to Keenan. He was wide open. I just missed it. It just sailed on me,” Rivers said.

It was one of the worst outings of Rivers’ career, and with the Chargers now at 4-6, it was a game that made it clear that this team is going nowhere.

  1. After watching Rivers against green bay, I thought he was good. After watching him last night, I didn’t think he was good. He is the AFC version of Kirk cousins.

  2. Hey Pouncey you must fill you’re back with the Dolphins…..qb throwing interceptions and you on the injured list… so much for your statement about playing with a pro bowl qb.
Enjoy the playoffs on tv with the fins.

  3. I don’t understand why he even get considered for the HOF, they just keep cheapening the HOF by letting players like Rivers, Bettis and other “good ” players in.

  4. God, he is terrible. Do the Chargers really think he is capable of leading them to a Super Bowl? And the HOF? That’s ridiculous. But the NFL wants everybody in the HOF so he will probably get in.

  5. His shot-put style of throwing is finally catching up to him. Still, he could have been a HOFer on another, better run team. Drew Brees was lucky to escape.

  6. 100% Blame on the Coach for this loss.
How could you not see the pattern that developed early in the Game = Rivers throwing INTERCEPTIONS.

That last drive should of been run plays with a disguised key pass at the right moment.

  7. For well over a decade I’ve been saying that Rivers is an average QB at best. He’s not horrible, but he’s definitely not a top-tier guy. He’s never led his team to anything meaningful, nor will he. It’s time to stop putting him on a pedestal. He’s mediocre.

  8. Most overrated qb of all time. Not a hof’er. Being from san diego I’ve watched this turd over the years and he is a loser. If i had a dollar for every time he threw a int on a potential game winning drive I’d be rich

  9. The statue QB is going to be a thing of the past very soon. You need someone who can at least move around the pocket a bit.

  10. The talk about Rivers and the Chargers has always been “Oh they’re one player short of a championship team”, or they had one too many injuries this year.
    here’s the thing.
Great QBs rise to the occasion, they make the players around them BETTER so that they can win without that star receiver or RB, who may be injured.
Rivers doesn’t do that, and never has.
He’s good but not great. Eli is in the same boat but has Championships to best Rivers with.
But both are leaders – both accept blame for poor games. Young QBs could take notes on that. (Like Baker Mayfield)

  11. Lets give credit were credits due the young Raider defense showed up big last night and was IN Rivers face the entire game… if you rush Rivers or flush him out of the pocket he panics and becomes the 38 year old Interception Man !!!

Gruden is building a bully one more good draft and were back n black baby!!

  12. The final pick to end the game wasn’t just a bad throw, it was a stupid throw. It’s not like it was 4th down. Chuck it out of bounds. Get another play.

  13. His shot-put style of throwing is finally catching up to him. Still, he could have been a HOFer on another, better run team. Drew Brees was lucky to escape.

He had LaDainian Tomlinson and Darren Sproles for 4 years, and in 3 of those years they were playing together. Rivers has had no excuse not to have been to a super bowl. Bust.

  14. Time to cut the cord on Rivers.

    Hall of Fam…lol.

He’s no more Hall of Fame than Donovan McNabb is. I’ve had long debates with people on why their careers are dead even, despite difference in stats. Because if you throw in their playoff accomplishments, it all evens out. McNabb played deep into in January FAR more than Rivers has.

  15. Time to hang ’em up, Phil.
That game last night was the worst I’ve seen from you in recent memory.
Don’t be a chump and further embarrass yourself.

  16. To think a few talking heads picked these guys to win the AFC West.

How do you think that, and it happens every year with SD. They gave to be one of the most continually underachieving teams in the NFL. That or the executives are just hoping to make West Coast football relevant. Of course San Fran has done its part. SD and OAK/LA/LV on the other hand gag!!!

  17. Hunter Henry was open underneath on those first 2 passes with room to run but Rivers kept forcing the ball deep.

Having said that. Thursday night games are brutal, even the best teams end up playing their worst football.

  18. Rivers had a bad game but it’s not all on him. Henry fell down on one of the picks. The oline was awful all night. The defense let Jacobs walk in for the game winner. Chargers just aren’t a great team.

  19. Curious to see where are all those guys who said Gordon was just some average RB who the chargers didn’t need. Newsflash!!! There is a huge drop off in skill between him and the next guy. Maybe he approached the contract issue wrong but the FACT is he is a game changer who will be missed next year playing for another team.

  20. Rivers is a good reason for the Hall of Fame waiting period. His numbers will look less exceptional every year as 4,000 yard seasons become the norm.

  21. Rivers makes too many mistakes and….

How is it possible for Russell MVP Wilson to have 22 Touchdowns, yes 22 with ONLY 1 interception after 9 games? Rivers was lucky not to have thrown 3 in the 1st half last night to 1 guy (penalty)?

I realize this isn’t about RW but why is there any doubt as to Wilson’s MVP play with an absolutely atrocious OL ( watch SF destroy it on MNF) a #2 WR in Lockett, a rookie in Metcalf and No TE (dissly on iR)? And a lousy O-Co?

Mahomes backup in KC, Moore, lights it up without missing Mahomes because of all of KC’s OL, WR, TE, RB talent. You take RW off Hawks, they win 1 game cuz PC is a weak coach. Lose Mahomes for a few weeks and there really isn’t some major drop off. Moore dominated the Vikes who have a stellar Defense. Mahomes dropped down any MVP view with how his backup played in his absence.

It’s OBVIOUS who the best QB in the NFL is right now and he’s a Hawk, not a Patriot, nor Packer, nor Chief nor Saint. If it’s not OBVIOUS then you’re not watching enough all-22 ball.

  22. I have always argued with people that Rivers is NOT a HOF”er and very overrated! But he’s popular and walks around with no helmet barking at people and “looks” like a great QB, so I guess that’s enough? He’s had a ton of talent and never gotten to a SB!

  23. *That last drive should of been run plays with a disguised key pass at the right moment.*

Wasn’t that a pathetic sequence of play calls? Not even dink and dunk, a series of middling tosses and semi-bombs. Dink and dunk they might have a chance to move the chains and get within FG range.

  24. There comes a point where we have to realize that Rivers is just a sub-par QB who is almost 2 decades in and still not even close to a superbowl. He throws picks, over shoots his receivers, blah blah blah.

The Chargers don’t realize the old guy is never going to get them to the big game. Probably time to invest in a younger, smarter, more accurate passer and let Rivers join a couple of teams for his last year or two.

Um, yes actually it absolutely was 4th down. Critize the prior 7 attempts he had and got not a single reception on.

  26. The 2 people to blame on the Chargers for that loss are the OC and Rivers. The OC for calling those deep shots when they only needed a FG and Rivers for not changing the play calls on that drive and for throwing what seemed liked 10 INTs during that game…especially the one in the end zone which would have been Harris’ 3rd of the night but was negated due to a penalty – Rivers only looked at that WR and the S had time to jump the route from 15 yards away, which is inexcusable for an experienced QB in the red zone.

  27. If Rivers isn’t HOF material, then they need to start removing folks that are in.

He has impressive numbers, and should get in.

  28. On that final drive, he had a lot of time to complete short passes to move the ball down field. He threw the game away by throwing long passes one after another, and completing none of them. Don’t know what he was thinking when all he needed was a field goal to win the game. He is definitely the one to blame.

He wasnt the one calling the plays.

  30. Phillip looked old, slow and tired. It was painful to watch him shotput his passes, looks like his arm is past its shelf life. He’s always been known to throw stupid picks but last night he was on fire. Can’t see the Chargers signing him to a new contract next year.

  31. Rivers has won a lot of NFL games. He’s a great character in the NFL. He may be declining, but he keeps fighting. Will be sad to see him go when he hangs up his cleats.
