Raiders sign D.J. Swearinger

Free agent safety DJ Swearinger worked out for the Raiders this week, and it apparently went well.

The Raiders are signing Swearinger, according to multiple reports.

Swearinger started and played every snap for the Cardinals in their first four games this season but was cut at the end of the month. He’s been a free agent since and has now found his new home.

Raiders safety Karl Joseph suffered an injury that had coach Jon Gruden “worried” after Thursday’s game, and the addition of Swearinger is probably an indication that Joseph is going to be out for a while.

  1. Swearinger is that special breed of player who goes from full-time starter to released over and over again, just like Zach Brown. These two must be especially grating behind the scenes.

  2. Raiders down three safties with Abrham, Jospeh and Joyner out. Will probably scour the waiver wire for more help.

  3. Gruden really likes #32 Dalin Leavitt; wouldn’t surprise me if he sees considerably more regular snaps as opposed to bringing in another FA off the street to try to get up to speed on Guenther’s system.

  4. Gruden and Mayock doing pretty well for this team. Glad Mayock got the look. I would LOVE to see someone try to copy the formula and bring in Baltimore’s weirdest son for the same role. I’m not so sure about the outcome but man it would be awesome to watch.

  5. Since Gruden has been running the Raiders they’ve improved every day, and today is no different. Even if they cut this guy tomorrow, so many of their main players are first or second year guys, and those youngsters are getting better with each game they play. The Raiders will have 3 first round picks (I’m counting Abram as one) and 3 3rd rounders next draft. The draft is loaded with high end players, so the Raiders could end up with 6 new blue-chippers by next draft, and I’m not even counting free agents. Ticket sales should be going through the roof in Vegas. Mark Davis could join his pop in the HOF some day.

  6. Sorry, can’t count third rounders as sure fire blue chippers. Less than half even become starters. With 3 first rounders Raiders will be lucky to get two blue chippers.

  7. Have to admit I was a little skeptical that Gruden and Mayock could effectively get back from being talking head TV guys to hands-on football guys, but that team looks a little better every time I see them, and it helps to get a few breaks along the way, such as the Chargers having to play two traffic cones at offensive tackle. Being able to effectively punt on last season with no repercussions helped as well, but that was part of the price Mark Davis was willing to pay to bring Gruden back. Will be interesting to see if they can take Vegas by storm next year, the way the Golden Knights did.

Dude, they’re one game over .500 right now and have only been to the playoffs once since 2002. Pump the breaks.

  9. We are 5-4 and everyone is congratulating Gruden and Mayock like we won something.

I love the Raiders but man our fan base operates on hyperbole and ignorance.

  10. Oh no, i guess this means Joseph is atleast out this week.

I feel like ive been talking up Joseph since we took him, undersized guy that plays like hes 7ft tall, absolutely blasting dudes and being dependable on the back end.

I was livid last year Gruden did everything he could to bench and trade him and when all of our safeties went down or were ineffective he came back from the adversity and finished top 5 on the team in tackles even after sitting over half the season.

Were a better defense with him and i think the staff finally realizes that.

    Get better soon bud.

  11. Lol, Raider fans trying to crown Mayock. You kidding me? 2 of the 3 top free agents brought in are not playing for the team. And Incognito is always 1 snap away from turning into full Barret Robbins. Crosby and Ferrel feasted on 2 backup tackles in prime time. And have done nothing in the games prior. The offense is average, and the defense is way below average. Abrams played 1 game, the fan base is ready to anoint him a pro bowler. 1 game over .500 is not anything to write home about. The season isn’t over yet. And at best they make it into the wildcard due to Mahomes injury and the implosion going on with the Chargers and Broncos. The Raiders will find a way to lose, just like the last 2 decades. They are a tier above the Jets, Redskins, Dolphins Bengals, and the Browns. A slow golf clap for that accomplishment.

Typical ignorant fan response. You have to consider who they’ve played and where.

The Raiders played 5 consecutive teams with winning records while traveling. That they are 5-4 is notable.

The back half or their sched is much weaker.

Oof, just OOF. Everything you just spewed is excrement. My username is for people like you. 2 of the top 3? Tyrell Williams was a top pick up, Trent Brown, Joyner, etc…who exactly are you talking about…AB? They took a 3rd round pick and tried, didn’t workout. Not even worth worrying about. And, as for Burfict, it worked out for a bit BUT I would not call him a top free agent. League definitely doesn’t like him, unfortunately he plays a bit too hard. You mention Incognito and say he is 1 snap away, sooo we’ve played 9 games and he is still 1 snap away? Once he plays a full season what are you going to say then? C’mon, give it up…you hate a team, fine, just say it. Don’t spew garbage and act like it is fact or gospel.

The FACT is. The analysts and commentators didn’t believe the Raiders would have a winning record coming into the weaker part of the schedule. They do. That is why fans are excited AND why analysts are excited. They all believe that the Bengals, Jets, Chargers, Broncos, and Jaguars are beatable teams. IF, not when, when they beat those teams that is a 11-5 record…that would be excellent for a team that went 4-12 last year. Shoot, even 9-7 is a great improvement. Also, what does Mahomes injury, that you mentioned, have to do with any of that…NOTHING. Broncos and Chargers imploding…uh, so? Every division has weak teams. Just go hoorah for your own team and stop being salty and hating. Ridiculous.

Dude, they were only expected to be a 4-12 loser team this year. Let us enjoy our season.
