Torrey Smith declines chance to return to Eagles

When the Eagles placed receiver DeSean Jackson on injured reserve and brought back former Eagles receiver Jordan Matthews, an obvious question emerged: Why not bring back former Eagles receiver Torrey Smith?

Smith, a speedster who can stretch the field, would better fill the void created by Jackson’s absence. As Jon Marks and Ike Reese of WIP radio in Philadelphia informed me during my weekly Friday visit with them, the Eagles did indeed contact Smith — and Smith declined.

John Clark of NBC Sports Philadelphia reported earlier this week that the Eagles expressed interest in Smith, and that Smith decided to stay retired.

A second-round pick of the Ravens in 2011, Smith signed a big-money deal with the 49ers in 2015. Released after two underwhelming seasons, he landed in Philadelphia, winning a Super Bowl.

The Eagles traded Smith to the Panthers in early 2018. The Panthers released Smith in September, and two days later he decided to retire.

With Jackson on IR, the Eagles would benefit from a deep threat. They aren’t easy to find, however, especially after the trade deadline.

  1. I’m sure their offer was terrible, just like their odds of winning anything in the playoffs this yr

  2. I think that says a lot about the current state of the Eagles.

Torrey Smith didnt want to come back to a team he won the superbowl with cause he knows they’re trash.

  3. They could have been able to trade for Marquise Goodwin, a speedy WR who has not played since Emmanuel Sanders joined Frisco. Goodwin will probably be traded or released next season.

  4. The Eagles have 2 speedster wide receivers on the practice squad so why not bring one of them up instead of bringing in slow Mathews?

  5. I’m not sure how much of speedster Torrey Smith is at this point, but he’s still got some savvy veteran moves and had a knack for getting open in a few clutch moments for Cam Newton the last time he played. Not to mention that he’s a good locker room presence for younger players. His style at this point, that is to say finding soft spots in zones and keeping an eye on the sticks, is more Matthews’ style than Desean Jackson’s, so I think Matthews and Smith would have filled similar roles. Matthews is a good bit younger too, so if he works out this year, the Eagles might look into extending him for a short term deal, especially if Jackson does not come back at a high level.

  6. Anyone who says Foles is better than Wentz just flat out does not know football. Either that or they’re simply trolling Eagles fans which, I admit is funny even as an Eagles fan.

  7. Roseman was a hero a few short months ago. His skills have proven to be excellent. He had depth and it was decimated in by the second regular season game Jackson’s health is tied to the Eagle’s struggles. The big question is why Roseman was sleeping during trade deadline and even earlier in the season when two or three gems were available. We don’t know the demands of the other teams involved? How did Williams end up with the Giants? One of the three wide receivers supposedly available is another huge puzzle. Surely Torrey Smith should never be part of the conversation. DESPERADO.

  8. Jackson was no deep threat. He played so little that he was nothing. The Philthy team knew he was going to be a part time player at best.

His career has been impacted by a horrible family tragedies a couple years ago. He has missed games and practices due to “personal matters”. He spoke about it a couple years ago. They lost twin boys during pregnancy almost a year after they lost a son. His wife talked about how she tried to convince him it’s ok to play but he couldn’t and missed two games in 2018 as well as practices. Hopefully he and she can rebound from that tradgedy.

Smith may just be tired of playing & ready to move on from playing, who knows except him.

You are correct! He was on NLFN prior to trade deadline and outlined his family and his health as to why he was retired for good. It didn’t hurt to ask him.

That first game proved you wrong. Injuries happen. I know a guy that signed as a FA with Atlanta and injured his knee during at the beginning of the first PRACTICE. My only issue is that he didn’t have surgery when it initially happened, but then I’m not the one getting cut open.

Depth? They only have 1 injury on offense and the point of depth is if there are injuries so where is the depth? The roster is awful rosman is the worst go in sports

  14. I can’t imagine any receiver would want to play with a quarterback who throws high, wide, or high and wide most of the time and then have to take the heat when the passing game isn’t good. Eagles will have to overpay good receivers or get guys just happy to be in the league to come to play with Wentz.
