Steelers beat Rams, run win streak to four games

The Steelers were 1-4 and facing the Chargers on the road with their third-string quarterback when they turned their season around.

Devlin Hodges led them to a win in that game, Mason Rudolph returned to the lineup after their Week Seven bye and the defense has made sure things keep on rolling. The Steelers forced seven turnovers in wins over the Dolphins and Colts to even their record and the defense came up big again on Sunday.

Minkah Fitzpatrick returned a Jared Goff fumble 43 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter and intercepted a pass that was deflected by Joe Haden with less than 30 seconds to go to ice the 17-12 win. The win leaves the Steelers with a 5-4 record and a four-game winning streak as they prepare to play in Cleveland in Week 11.

Haden also picked Goff off earlier in the game  — another interception came when Johnny Hekker tried a pass on a fake punt — and the Steelers sacked him four times on the way to the win. T.J. Watt had two of the sacks while Fitzpatrick now has five interceptions, two fumble recoveries and two touchdowns since joining the Steelers in a September 16 trade.

Goff was 22-of-41 for 243 yards overall and Cooper Kupp was held without a catch as the Rams offense took a big step backward by producing three points after improved pre-bye results against the Falcons and Bengals. The Steelers represented stiffer defensive opposition and things don’t get much easier with the Bears and Ravens on deck the next two weeks.

Rudolph was 22-of-38 for 242 yards and a touchdown to James Washington that tied the score in the first half of the game. He was sacked three times, including once for a safety by Aaron Donald, but came up big with two third-down conversion throws and another on a fourth down in his own territory on an eight-minute fourth-quarter drive that ended with a field goal.

Going for it on fourth down from that spot with a two-point lead showed head coach Mike Tomlin has faith in his quarterback along with faith in a defense that answered the call once again on Sunday.

  1. As I stated last week, give Tomlin his due. He has to get coach of the year considerations. He wont win it as my niners coach will, but he has done a hell of a job.

  2. Amazing game by both defences! Good game tho Rams! But way to go boys, Steelers are heating up! Love ya Steelers!

  3. THIS IS WHY JERRY IS BEING SMART AND NOT OVER PAYING DAK. DAK IS DAHM GOOD BUT NOT ELITE.
DAK > GOOF /WENTZ. AND DAK IS ONLY WORTH 27 MIL MAX! DONT OVER PAY. TAG HIM A YEAR IF NEED TO
BUT HE IS WHAT HE IS VERY GOOD NOT ELITE. HE NEEDS ALOT OF HELP AROUND HIM UNLIKE BRADY.

  4. Yep, Tomlin definitely has lost this team. He needs to go. (sarcasm)

What a gutsy call going for that 4th down, and Rudolph pulled it off.

  5. Aaron Donald is the only one of the Rams big ticket players who comes to play every week.

Could’ve been a legacy defining game for Goff and it was, but in the wrong way. 3 fumbles, two INTs and outplayed by the backup QB on the other sideline. He’s not a special QB.

  6. That’s four consecutive game balls for the refs. I’m fact, these refs deserve two game balls. One for calling an incomplete pass a fumble and another for a PI call that led to the only offensive TD.

  7. Jared Goff has not been the same since the Super Bowl…Offensive Line needs major work and there is no running game….Les Snead sends two number one picks away….We have some major work to do…

Refs gave the Steelers the game.

The Rams had plenty of chances to take the victory but couldn’t capitalize. Look at Goff, but maybe you need a life jacket too to make you sure can float in the river you are crying

  9. The Steelers offense is still frustratingly limited. But the addition of Fitzpatrick has had a HUGE impact on the defense. It’s bigger than just his turnovers. The entire secondary plays better coverage knowing he is back there. This is one of the best units in the league right now.

  10. The Steelers coaching staff (Tomlin/Fichtner) need to go. The 3rd and 4th down play calls with inches to go were terrible. It worked but a good coach would have the quarterback under center and fall forward. The pass play with a lead in the end zone for a safety was ridiculous. Because we won doesn’t ignore the incompetence of the play calls.

  11. Everyone was laughing when the niners beat the steelers, talking about we beat a dumpster team. Told you guys the steelers are a good team.

  12. The dozen or so Rams fans remaining just left the building to go to the beach.

You watch…LA can’t support one team let alone two when they are losing. Empty brand new stadium time…

Hawks and 49ers are left to battle it out. Cards will be on par or better than the Rams soon.

  13. Lambs look, like they are starting a ‘Falconesque’ collapse into obscurity. Always good to see a LA team fall apart.

  14. Saying it again, The Rams o-line is really hurting. The let Saffold (g) leave in free agency and they cut Sullivan (c), both done with the thinking that they had capable replacements from 5th and 6th round draft choices. Obviously, there thinking has been wrong. This plus Wentworth is struggling as is the other guard and you have a mess. Other teams are coming up the middle and getting in Goff’s face so he is inefficient.

  15. “Belichick gave the league the blueprint on how to beat the Rams.”

Well, then, the league needs to return the favor and give him the blueprint on how to beat the Ravens.

Don’t know what it is with Pats fans who want credit for games their team didn’t even play in.

  16. That’s odd. All these PFW comments about every team but the Ravens. No mention that we beat the Steelers in their stadium. No mention of how many times Harbaugh went for it on 4th down and made them. Yeah…Tomlin is a genius.
Oh about that four in a row. Vinitieri missing a chip shot ten yards to the left was a really impressive win by the Steelers over the Colts.

  17. The Steelers have 7 games left. They will be favored in 5 and maybe even 6 of those games. If they can avoid the dreaded curse of playing down to the competition and beat the teams they should beat, then a Wildcard is attainable and if the Ravens stumble the division is within reach.
Who da thunk it 6 weeks ago.

  18. Ravenmuscle, your guys blew up Rudolph and the Steelers turned to their third string undrafted rookie free agent QB. And it still took them into overtime to get the win.

Harbaugh is a good coach. Not as good as Tomlin as the numbers show but better than most.

How well has this worked for other teams ….. oh that’s right it hasn’t. Dak can’t play without elite skill around him. You can only pay so many guys. Cooper and Zeke are way more important than Han Dak.

  20. What drama! You can’t take anything for granted. Every play is important. What about the fourth and one in your own territory. It begs the question why aren’t there more roll out plays for #2 in both directions. But the Steelers won another game they were supposed to lose! Can’t say enough about the coach. The season was over after the second week of the season and look at them now!

  21. How much money did the play by play guy Chris Meyers have on the Rams? He seemed personally outraged over any call that went against the Rams even when Moose and Blandino agreed with the call. It was like listening to ESPN do an Alabama game.

  22. Funny to hear a few Rams fans blaming the refs for the loss. Admittedly, I did not watch the game. So I don’t know exactly what they’re referring to. BUT…there should be a moratorium on Rams fans talking about blown calls. You got a ticket to the super bowl because of one of the worst blown calls I’ve ever seen!

  23. All these years, people still hating on Tomlin. Guy is EASILY a top 5 coach, and has been for well over a decade. If he were fired, there’d be 20+ teams at least putting feelers out

no there wouldn’t. he’s a glorified position coach. and they havent won anything yet this year.

  25. Pretty good I guess for a “cheerleader.” Some fan bases don’t know how good they have it. Just because Tomlin gets beat by the best coach any of us have ever seen doesn’t mean he’s not good. Cleveland sure wishes they had him instead of the beer guy running their team.

Mason is also 4-2 as a Starter 👍🏻

  27. I absolutely hate the Steelers as a Cardinals fan but I can put all that aside.

What I am laughing about is after one game with Mason Rudolph, Colin Cowherd said, “Nice win Steelers season is over.”

He then mocked the called passing plays and say they didn’t trust Mason Rudolph. Not only him either, All the Tomlin Redskin rumors, and the press largely thinking Tomlin is gone all these passing weeks

This idiotic ideas did not age well lmao.

  28. After Ben got hurt in week 2, the D realized they had to be the unit to lead this Team. When Minkah arrived, the last weak-link was replaced, Free Safety, and the D gelled instantly. Colbert deserves major kudos to buck trend and trade away a #1 to complete his D. When was the last time an in-season trade has had such a dramatic impact? 7 turnovers and 2 TD’s…instant All Pro.

  29. Before yesterday, Tomlins team beat the Bungles, Chargers, (game gifted by the) colts (with a backup QB), and the Dolphins.
All of a sudden he is coach of the year. The Steelers are still making the same mistakes and sloppy play that has
cost them every big game in the last decade. Even if the Steelers make the playoffs Tomlin will out coached by
the first decent team they play. Their coordinators are junk and the whole staff should have been fired years ago.

  30. Nobody wants to talk about the “fumble” that traveled 10 yards down field? Rudolph does the same thing and it’s quickly called an incomplete pass. If the stealers can get this type of performance from the zebras every week, the north is still up for grabs.

  31. realfootballfan,

Tomlin doesn’t just lose to the greatest coach in the history of the NFL. He consistently loses to mediocre coaches and teams. Everything is peachy now on their 4 game win streak assisted by the league and refs, but my guess is you’ll change your tune in the near future as Tomlin will return to cheerlead mode.

I suggest you look at Tomlin:s record . You will see only Belicheat s is better over the last 12 years so you life long jealousy of the Steelers cant change the facts. It must suck to not be able to make it in Pitts burg…..

What game were you watching? I hope this was just sarcasm on your part. You do not fall forward with A. Donald sitting at the 3 technique. I am by no means a Stillers fan but what Tomlin and his staff are doing with all the young puppies on offense is amazing. Bringing in Fitzpatrick in the middle of the season and letting him play his NATURAL position is been a masterful stroke so far. Fitz has transformed this defense in a short period of time. His ability to cover so much ground after reading and reacting is making life easier for the rest of the defense. Yep after 4 straight wins its time to dump Tomlin. SMH…

This is not why the Rams lost. They lost because they have no running game. They were one dimensional. They lost because the oline is in shambles and cannot protect Jared Goof. They lost because the corner opposite of Ramsey can’t cover anyone. They lost because McVay is panicking by removing Goof for Bortles to run a QB option and then a fake punt that gets intercepted. They lost because they’re lost.

The ball was dislodged from Goff’s hand by the defender before it became a pass. Rudolph’s arm never got touched before his arm went forward with the ball still secured. Any questions?

  36. Lol. Steelers have no chance at all. They are one and done if they even make it

Eliminate Brady and you would be in the same boat. Be careful about how you gloat…….karma is coming.

  37. Apparently everyone associated with the Steelers deserves Consideration for every award presented this year. These guys are headed for the SuperBowl..Book it!

No doubt the Steelers are playing better as the season progresses. It looks like the trade for Minka was a huge win for the defense….the guy is making a legitimate case for DPOY. If the Steelers can get Connor back they are a dangerous team

  39. Not a big Tomlin fan, but it should be recognized that this is a pretty good coaching job thus far. Maybe the last game of the season against the Ravens will mean something… for both teams.

  40. The Rams are toast, but hey at least they have the draft to fix things and a bunch of cap space to get free agent help.

    oh wait….

  41. As a Ravens fan, the Steelers are the scariest team to me when it comes to Lamar Jackson and this offense. They had the best game against Lamar because to contain him, you need to be able to blow up his offensive line with your front 4 with a solid zone behind hit. If you have 4 people blowing into the backfield, it makes it hard to do those delayed option runs and play action that makes Lamar so effective. As I said before the season started when Cleveland was getting all the praise, you can never count out Pittsburgh or the Ravens because they are two well run organizations who are always competitive no matter the circumstances. I guess the AFC North isn’t so bad after all haters. Much respect Steeler fans.

  42. Leave it to steeler fans to get carried away with a 5-4 team. Coach of the Year? MVP?? I hope that was meant as a joke. Probably not though. 9 win ceiling with possibly(but doubtful)1 playoff game.

  43. Rams went all out in FA last year to get the seats sold but the window slammed shut after one year when they were hoping for at least two or three.

Aren’t the Chargers already starting to sniff around other possibilities? LA is fools gold.
