Titans pull off comeback, beat Chiefs 35-32

Patrick Mahomes threw for 446 yards and three touchdowns in his return to the Chiefs lineup, but it wasn’t enough to get the Chiefs their seventh win of the season.

Ryan Tannehill took the Titans 61 yards in four plays in less than a minute and hit Adam Humphries for a 23-yard touchdown with 23 seconds left in the game. He then ran the ball in for a two-point conversion that put the Titans up 35-32 in a game that they trailed by nine points early in the fourth quarter.

Kansas City got the ball back and Mahomes hit Demarcus Robinson for a couple of passes to pick up 28 yards. That set up a 52-yard Harrison Butker field goal attempt as time expired, but the kick was blocked and the Titans got to celebrate.

The Chiefs looked like they would be able to put the game away after stopping the Titans on a fourth down deep in their own territory after the two minute warning, but Mahomes took a sack on third down and a field goal try went awry on a snap that holder/punter Dustin Colquitt seemed not to expect. Colquitt threw the ball away, but was flagged for intentional grounding to give the Titans 10 more yards to use for their comeback effort.

Tannehill made the most of that gift by running for 18 yards and connecting with Anthony Firkser for 20 yards to set up the Humphries touchdown. The quarterback was 13-of-19 for 181 yards and two touchdowns which provided nice balance for Derrick Henry‘s 188 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

The win was Tennessee’s third in the last four weeks and leaves the Titans with a 5-5 record as they hit their bye week. They’ll return with four AFC South games in the final six weeks and try to make a similar comeback in the standings to the one they pulled off on Sunday.

Kansas City is 6-4 and they’ll be in Mexico City to face the Chargers in Week 11.

  1. The division title is up for grabs and is looking more Silver & Black by the day.

    One nation, Raider Nation.

  2. I really thought that Vrabel screwed up on that last kick off, and he did, but they were lucky it did not cost them the game.

They should have kicked it as far as possible. The odds of a TD runback are low, but they gave the Chiefs the ball on the 38, and a reasonable shot of tying the game. Especially if they could have kicked it out of the end zone, then KC would have had to go another 13 yards in that remaining 17 seconds…a lot harder, and they probably would not have even had a FG attempt, but a hail Mary instead.

  3. Nice job Andy. 3rd and 2 to end the game, and also run the clock and you choose screen pass. Worst case you have a 40 yard FG to go up by 8, best case you get a 1st down.

Penalties, poor special teams, a defense that can’t stop a 1 dimentional team.,. Points to coaching.

Sucks but if TN puts 33 up on you, you have problems.

  4. Hold on a second the Chiefs can’t lose they have the greatest quarterback thats ever played the game. Haven’t you heard of him? He’s the guy that throws the no look pass, and the guy who lost a division title game on his home field, but he does some really cool television commercials

  5. Patrick Mahomes was slicing and dicing up the titans secondary but what does Andy Reid do let Mahomes hand off the ball 25 times for 97 yds( pretty much 3yds avg of going NOWHERE). YOU TALK ABOUT WASTING at least 10 DOWNS!!!! When you should let your MVP put it in the air and bury this team EARLY. WE saw once again ANDY REID PLAYING NOT TO LOSE.

Patrick Mahomes deserve a better faith, he is a Lamborghini Sports Car who happens to have a Station Wagon Driver.

  6. Cheifs had 3 timeouts at the 2m warning, and got the ball back with 23 seconds, when it could have been over a minute.

Andy reid also called a timeout before a 2pt converstion.

    What a genuis.

Refs blew the whistle and allow Titians to continue to play…
Titans were offsides on the blocked kick..

    ——–

Chiefs fan complaining about the Refs. lmao chiefs lead the league in getting phantom pi/holding calls on 3rd down to keep drives alive.

  8. Where is “TruthfulDolphinsFanNotWearingBlinders”? He took shots at Tannehill every chance he could get. Being a Miami fan I told him and (others) Tannehill was not the problem. I posted back in July that Tannehill would have the Titans starting job by week 8 (And not because of injury) and he would lead them into the playoffs. Well, the playoffs could be a stretch but ht has them in contention much more than Mariota did. Tannehill is 3-1 with 8 TD and 3 Int as a starter.

  9. Chiefs defense is really rounding into shape under DC Spagnuolo, huh? And what a monster Frank Clark has been. Quite the return on the investment KC has gotten from the 1st and 2nd round draft picks along with about $22 million a year. Clark has 3 sacks and 17 combined tackles this year, lol.

  10. I guess the defense doesn’t want to play whenever Mahomes plays. 500+ yards of offense, 32 points and a lopsided time of possession in favor of KC. What a shameful performance by the defense yet again, but they play hard when Matt Moore is QB’ing. Time for the coaching staff to make some changes on defense. It’s getting really old watching the same garbage defense in the same situations most weeks

  11. It was a bad snap from the long snapper from a Chiefs win and still had a chance to win but for a blocked punt. Mahomes is a beast, the jealousy is amazing on here or just a bunch of idiots here who didnt watch the game. More injuries on D and O and still only lost over a bad snap

  12. He was offsides, they showed it 10 times on ESPN already and NFL has said it already as well. Refs missed a huge call again.

  13. 460 yards passing and three tds…. and you lose!!! Absolutely unbelievable…. Nice Defense…..

  14. “exinside trader: should’ve rested Mahomes…looked a little gimpy.”

    No, please, no.

Put him out there for every play no matter what. Who knows what shape he’ll be in by 12/1.

No he wasn’t, and the NFL hasn’t said a word. Nice try though, enjoy that L.

    6-4.

  17. Frank Clark and Tyrann Mathieu were complete no-shows, and I mean all year. Clark got a sack because of Chris Jones and Clark dropped an east interception. I saw the Money Grabber, previously known as the Honey Badger (5 years ago when he actually made plays) on the field but have yet to see that kid do anything.

That all said, if your coach is still calling gimmicky plays for your 3rd string TE on 3rd and 2 to end the game, you have more problems than 2 overpaid athletes.

  18. KC lost because:

    Hill OPI in Q1
Jones hands to face in Q2
    Williams fumble
    Hardman fair catch inside 5
    Hill dropped passes
    Watkins drops
    Muffed FG snap
    Blocked FG
    Missed tackles
    Pennel inactive

    …and bad play calling/coaching

  19. Tannehill still sucks kc makes any offense look good, titans are crap,kc is a very below average team who has worse defense then last year id be shocked if eitherof these teams are in playoffs, very mediocre both.

  20. Even Patrick Mahomes can’t save Andy Reid from himself.

I hope they eliminate the franchise tag in the new CBA so Mahomes can get out of KC, he will never win anything with Andy Reid as his coach. He’s too good for this organization and they will waste his whole career.

  21. Mahomes is a beast, the jealousy is amazing on here or just a bunch of idiots here who didnt watch the game. More injuries on D and O and still only lost over a bad snap.

Did watch the game. Not jealousy at all, just can’t get as excited about Mahomes as media. The over-the-top fawning is nauseating. Romo sounded like a girl with a crush throughout. The point is, don’t be surprised if there’s some resentment felt towards the object, when the media continually and excessively raves about one player. It will come back to bite. Don’t forget, Cam Newton was once that coveted “MVP” too.

  22. ya but wait……. Mahomes sure can make a helluva jump throw!!! That was incredible!!! Gimme a break!! You need to learn how to burn clock, but that ain’t happening…and is it just me or does your criminal receiver have hands of stone???

    Tannehill doesn’t slide.

    ————————
Tannehill wore his man pants today. He got a few plays just by being hard and tough. I never thought much of him but for that game he gets kudos and respect.

  25. ANDY REID is a GREAT Coach who will never win a Super Bowl until he gives the power of Clock Management over to another coach that knows what they are doing in that regard because he does not.

  26. Seahawk fan here not missing Frank Clark very much.

But he was always an 8/10 talent. JJ Watt and Khalil Mack are 10/10… I don’t know what you thought you were getting with Frank Clark but he was never on that level.

He is a very solid member of a good defense and that’s all he ever was. He could never carry the defense… Not many can.

  27. The Chiefs lost because of the botched/early snap and the blatant offsides on the final kick attempt. The lack of a consistent running game and the poor run defense continues to plague the Chiefs. Their #1 priority in the offseason should be to find a better RB and continue to work on the D-Line.

Chiefs just aren’t balanced. Pats will win AFC. Again. Yawn…

    ——————

Baltimore might have other plans regarding the winner of the AFC….. That team is a juggernaut.

  29. Lol at a Pats fan talking about fawning over Mahomes. Been hearing the same with Brady, even during the decade he had sooooooooo many chances but didn’t win a single SB

Plenty of video online showing that the rusher did not move until the ball was snapped. Just a great defensive play.

Brady wins 6 of 18 SBs. Appears in 9 of 18. And you want to take him down for the ones he DIDN’T win?

As we all know, it’s a greater accomplishment to be 4th in your conference than 1st in your conference. Yeah, that’s the ticket

  32. Andy Reid is a great planner and offensive designer but he is horrible in situational decisions and thus will never coach in another Superbowl.
Agree with the comment about the Chiefs offense being more balanced with Moore under center.
