Sam Darnold supports Adam Gase, thinks playoffs are possible

The Jets improved to 2-7 by beating the Giants yesterday, which will buy them a few days of reprieve from questions about who needs to get fired and when.

But quarterback Sam Darnold made it clear that from his standpoint, there should be no question about coach Adam Gase.

“I think it’s definitely important to keep a head coach,” Darnold told Steve Serby of the New York Post. “I’m not in the position to making decisions like that.”

But when it was mentioned that his opinion might carry weight, Darnold replied: “Yeah I know it does, but at the same time, that’s out of my power. But I would definitely love to see him. He’s a great head coach, he’s a great play-caller, and we get along really well. . . .

“He’s great. There’s no flinch in him,” Darnold said. “I think it kinda ripples throughout the team. When you got a head coach that’s just gonna continue to work no matter what the circumstances are, no matter what people are saying about him, it’s a really good thing.”

That relationship will be the key to their future of the franchise, and Darnold isn’t ready to make that future a time beyond this season.

“We still got a chance,” Darnold said. “If we get on a roll here and we win out, we got a chance at the playoffs.”

If that happens, and it seems unlikely considering they lost to the Dolphins last week, Gase should have lifetime job security.

“He’s great. There’s no flinch in him”

Yes Sam and being ranked 32nd in offense, what’s not to like???

  2. Of course the playoffs are possible – in your fantasy football league.

As for the NFL, the Jets COULD make the playoffs if …

All the other teams disbanded and the jets were the only team left. Then they would be world champions.

  3. It would be one thing if the team were just losing, but Darnold has also shown serious regression this season. That’s all on Gase. Especially when the team doesn’t have a QB coach or a real offensive coordinator. That’s unacceptable, and Gase has to go.

  4. What is he supposed to say “we’re dead in the water”? If Gase is around next year it will tell us all we need to know about the Jets brass. Do they admit the mistake and move on or stand by Gase? Didn’t Miami tell us anything?

  5. Every team that plays the lousy Giants comes away thinking all their problems are solved. Next week the problems will be back when you play a professional team.

  6. Darnold cannot say anything else to the veterans in the locker room like McLendon, Beachum, or Demaryius Thomas. Football fans will laugh but he’s keeping the locker room together.

  7. They have guaranteed losses coming up against the Ravens, Raiders, Steelers, and the Bills. So how Mark Sanchez 2.0 is being delusional with his outlook.

  8. I doubt the NFL is going to expand the playoffs and/or realign conferences during the season so I don’t think the Jets have any shot this year.

  9. “We still got a chance,” Darnold said. “If we get on a roll here and we win out, we got a chance at the playoffs.”
