Tom Brady: Anyone would take 8-1, but we have to ramp it up

Getty Images

The last time we saw the Patriots on the field, they were losing to the Ravens on Sunday night in an outing that renewed some questions about how good their offense is this year.

Any time that topic comes up, it’s a safe bet that Rob Gronkowski’s name will come up as well. As PFT noted before the Baltimore game, Gronkowski has until November 30 to return to action this year and that prospect came up during quarterback Tom Brady‘s Monday appearance on WEEI.

Brady has said in the past that he won’t lobby Gronkowski about returning and stuck to that on Monday. He also said “our team is what it is” and that they will need to step up their game in order to build on what they’ve already done this season.

“I said last week, to be 8-1 and have the opportunity in the second half of the year that we do, I think anyone would take that,” Brady said. “It hasn’t all been perfect, but it’s been good enough in some areas. We’re really going to have to really ramp it up and play our best as we go forward. Hopefully it will be a great second half of the season. It’s really up to us to earn it, the people that are in the locker room have to show up to work every day with a great sense of determination, commitment to doing our best for each other, for the team, and try and go get a win. It starts this week in Philly.”

The Eagles game kicks off a run of four straight games against teams that currently have winning records and getting through it without the kind of stumble they experienced against the Ravens will make it all but impossible to envision anyone else as the No. 1 seed in the AFC come the postseason.

  1. The Cheifs proved sunday they are not in contention for a 1st round bye.
Even if they get all timeouts back that Andy Reid saved this season for the playoffs, they simply cant get it done.

    Go Pats.

  2. It’s great to have a history so successful that an 8-1 record make people think there are leaks in the boat. It was one game, let’s not overreact for either team. This was the same Raven’s team that lost to Cleveland

  3. We’ll know a lot more about the Pats this time next month. They run through a pretty good gauntlet over the next 4-5 games.

I didn’t think they were all that heading into the season, and the D was certainly overrated based on performances against sub-par offenses. Was the Ravens game an anomaly, or more of what we can expect against good teams?

They’re also an older team, which should make things more interesting as the season progresses.

One and done come playoff time.

    Dynasty is over!

I seem to remember you making this prediction for many years now….. How has that worked out for you?

  5. They need Isaiah Wynn back immediately. The offense would also drastically improve if his receivers could create more separation. It’s times like now everyone misses having Gronk. This is the reality, the Patriots’ defense has struggled countless times against college gimmick offenses and quarterbacks. Losing to scrubs like Lamar Jackson, Colin Kaepernick, and Cam Newton is nothing new. However, they need to do something, such as putting two spies on the corners to prevent these mobile quarterbacks from running all over them, to improve their rush defense.

Could the NFL have gifted the Pats an easier, 8 game opening stretch of the season?
    It’s ridiculous!
    —————–
That award would go to the ’72 perfect Dolphins … Opponents combined record: 70-122-4 (0.367 winning percentage) and played only two teams above .500 all season, and both of them only 8-6. Nobody in their schedule made the playoffs.,

  7. They’re fine.

Played a bit of possum vs. the Ravens – the gameplan won’t look anything like that in January.

8-1 with the division secure – they can work on their weaknesses the entire 2nd half of the season for a potential deep run in the playoffs.

    Going to be fun

  8. If Wentz struggles against the Patriots, it will remind the Eagles fans that they kept the wrong QB.

Come on , look at that schedule.
They had only 2 winning teams , and lost to one.

Steelers have a winning record, so that would be 2-1 vs teams with “winning records”

    Not that it actually matters.
People always overreact to the last thing they saw

  10. That is true at the beginning of the season. Even the Pats would take 8-1 back then, but after starting the season 8-0, neither Frisco nor Brady would want to be 8-1. Frisco wants to be the only 9-0 team in the NFL. They don’t want to be 8-1.

  11. “I seem to remember you making this prediction for many years now….. How has that worked out for you?”

Some people seem to like humiliating themselves over and over again.

  12. N’Keal Harry not playing against the Ravens was major blue balls. Just having him on the field may have been the difference maker for a road game like that. They activated him on Saturday. Why do that if you’re not going to play him against your toughest opponent at this point of your schedule? Perhaps, Belichick is wanting to save him for the post-season, similar to Damien Harris.

I think its good for the NFL if the same team wins the SB every year.

The salary cap and reversed draft order supposed to prevent this. And oh, yes, some mocked up accusations too.

  14. Brady reminds me of MJ in how he is hyper-competitive. The really great ones have that in common!

The only thing to debate now is where the rematch will be played. I have a feeling it will be at M&T Bank.

  16. The Patriots are still the most organized and professional team to watch every Sunday. Hardly ever come away with a loss that’s due to incompetence. Ravens looked really good. I hope Lamar makes it healthy to the playoffs, good watch.

    _________________________________________________________________

No way. The Ravens have to play the Texans, Rams, 49ers, Bills, Jets, and Browns. The Steelers could possibly beat them at home, too. If Cleveland was able to do it, anything is possible. After seeing the Falcons beat the Saints on the road, never sleep on those divisional rivalry games.

  18. Yes they lost. Yes they let LJ run amock. But in reality it was much closer than it appears on paper. JE with the strip-6 took away a ton of offensive field time. Then Brady with the terrible pick did it again. Two plays that killed the ratio of offense to defense. The Pick can in no way be attributed to the DB. So no reason to panic. 8-1 is still the King of the AFC.

  19. This Patriots team has injuries and flaws. They are very beatable as a road team and somewhat vulnerable at home. TB is right, the remaining 7 games (hello Philly, Dallas, Houston, KC and Buffalo) are going to be a challenge and there is a lot of work to do to secure a first round bye and hopefully the number 1 seed. I think coming off the bye and losing to the Eagles would open more questions as to how good they really are. In BB we trust!

  20. The patriots playing Possum is a joke, they got their teeth kick down their throats. Baltimore crushed them all over the fields. This is the changing of the guard, and New England fans just have to deal with it.

  21. “The only thing to debate now is where the rematch will be played. I have a feeling it will be at M&T Bank.”

And if so the Ravens will have earned it. I’ll put my money on the Pats though and a rematch at Gillette

Sounds like chiefs fans last season.

The new flavor of the week

  23. Tom Brady is not human. I doubt we’ll see the likes of him again in the NFL for a long long time.

  24. This isn’t college football where Alabama can schedule 4 cream-puffs for their non-conference schedule. The Patriots are subject to the same schedule rotation as every other team in the league is. Some years you get matched up with weaker conferences. Some years tougher conferences. Doesn’t change the fact that over the last 19 seasons, New England has consistently been beating everyone, regardless of if it’s the AFC East, AFC South, NFC East, etc.

  25. “Yes they lost. Yes they let LJ run amock. But in reality it was much closer than it appears on paper. JE with the strip-6 took away a ton of offensive field time. And the Ravens muffed a punt & fumbled early on, at a time when they could have put the game away.

  26. Tommy needs to play allot better, unfortunately at this age, he what he is. Desperately need Gronk back to have a running game again.

Well Right now 3 of the 8 teams they have played are in playoff positions and two others beat teams in playoff positions. So as bad as the first part of the schedule was they kind of represent the what the league is right now.

I mean the Saints lost to Atlanta, the Packers lost to the Chargers, the Ravens lost to Cleveland, the Cowboys lost to the Jets, the Colts lost to Miami and the Rams lost to the Steelers. So I don’t know how good any team is at the moment.

  29. @tbisgod

Still recovering from your Colts loss to the Dolphins yesterday I see. Don’t worry, it happens, and your Colts have had worse losses.

  30. Funny how brady loses the game due to outright refusal to throw down the field, then blames the team. Out of 46 passes, literally two of them completed beyond 10 yards. Unless you count his interception, then its three. Bellichick needs an upgrade at qb, badly

    ————————————————————————————–
That is funny. I thought it was the run defense that was the issue.

  32. The Patriots have plenty of holes on defense & offense. The Ravens exposed the mighty Patriots, I see them losing 3 more games. They will lose home field and go on the road for the playoffs. Stay tuned

  33. It’s an extremely rare scheduling hardship for a team to play consecutive weeks against teams coming off their bye. The schedule makers demanded that the Patriots do this. No team has been able to beat a winning team coming off their bye on the road, the fact that NE couldn’t do it in the back half of a difficult fortnight should come as no surprise.

  34. Belichick tends to do better against a quarterback the second time around. Having ween and been beat by Lamar Jackson they will be better prepared in the playoffs.

  35. Last season the Patriots went 11-5 and were blown out by 3 bad teams. We all know what the end result was.

So 12-4 and on the road in the AFC divisional round? Um, have you looked at the records of the other AFC teams? It basically means the Bills and Chiefs and Texans all go undefeated the rest of the way. Highly unlikely

Or did you mean they go 12-4 get a home game in rd 1 then go on the road for the afc championship, like they did last year? You know when they won in KC and then the SB?

Bill will have a master plan and school Lamar.

    Then the Ravens whoop them.

Oh, Bill was playing possum and saving his best plays for the playoffs.

    Lol, you people are hilarious.
    ———————————————————————————–
No doubt the Ravens lit them up and the Patriots had no answers. But they don’t hand out the Lombardi in November.

  38. After seeing first hand how obnoxious Patriots’ fans act at an away game, it doesn’t surprise me to hear the delusional blabber about Belicheat “saving” this-and-that for the playoffs. But then again, these are fans who argued endlessly that a deflated ball is a natural phenomenon when the Patriots play but not when any other team takes the field.

Your head coach sure did want to draft that Lamar Jackson scrub per a report from one of the NFL anaylst on of the TV networks. I’m not one to talk smack but I will defend my team.

Why is Lamar Jackson getting so much disrespect for a second year player? He has done everything people has said he couldn’t do, but still gets no respect.

The man is handling his business and whoever doesn’t like it, too bad.

    ———————————–

How do you explain 3 of the 4 Colts balls losing pressure? You say Pats fans are delusional…. Can you tell me what the starting PSI was for all 24 footballs? Until you or the NFL can we will never know because there was never a written log of those starting points. Never was before that game either. But if you think that is what has led to the Pats success then you are clearly the delusional one.

  44. “Anybody who seriously thinks Bill Belichick would purposely play possum in a November game is delusional.

And, yes the Patriots game plan will be different. But, guess what? So will the Ravens.”

Both fair statements. No rational Pats fan thinks Bill was holding back anything.

Its nice to see a tough Ravens team again. The better versions have always been a thorn in the Pats side, and one of the better rivalries we’ve had. Jackson looks to be progressing and turning into a top QB, which is good for the league and people who are football fans as opposed to fans of just a given franchise.

  45. Hahahahahahaha! There they go again! The crazy conspiracy theories! And of course, cheating doesn’t help you win. People cheat for no reason. Is that another theory. Hahahahahaha.

    ————————-

What did I say that was wrong? You do not even have a rebuttal and just go to cheating mode. I am pretty damn objective and this thing stunk from the go. Can you answer these two questions? What was the PSI for each of the 24 footballs before the game? Why did the Colts register 3 of 4 balls under 12.5 PSI at halftime? Those are two very straight forward questions that you cannot answer. It’s okay because you think having a running back line up as a slot receiver and declared an ineligble receiver is cheating. Do not cheat your brain of some rational unbiased thought.

  47. Carlos
Yet you have no answer regarding the texts, destroyed evidence and footage of equipment guys taking the balls into a private room. Speaks for itself, guilty and punished. Congressional probe ….etc etc etc. Then there’s Mr. Human traffic himself basically corrupt from the top down. Noting under BB counts, sorry sport.
