Mike Zimmer: Gary Kubiak probably the best thing to happen since I came here

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer wasn’t happy with the way the team’s offense was working with offensive coordinator John DeFilippo running the show last year so DeFilippo was fired during the season and Kevin Stefanski was promoted into the job on an interim basis.

Stefanski got the full-time job this offseason, but the Vikings supplemented him by hiring former Texans and Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak as an assistant head coach and offensive advisor. The team is ninth in points scored and eighth in offensive yards after finishing 19th and 20th in those metrics last season and those results left Zimmer singing Kubiak’s praises on Wednesday

“Gary has been tremendous. It’s probably the best thing that’s ever happened to me since I came here,” Zimmer said at his press conference.

Kubiak’s work will be in the spotlight a bit more this week as the Vikings try to win for the sixth time in seven weeks against the Broncos. Zimmer said he doesn’t expect Kubiak’s experience with the organization to make a big difference in this week’s outcome, but it’s clear he thinks the coach has made one in the big picture.

  1. So Denver did not want our offensive line coach or tight ends coach that was the deal breaker I expect our offensive line and tight ends will exert themselves this week for their unwanted coaches. SKOL!!

  2. They just had to add more spaces to their coaches parking lot to accommodate the largest coaching staff in the NFL. That won’t be a problem once the scapegoats are fired later in the season.

  3. Outstanding hire by Zimmer. He knows his weakness: Offense. He needs that veteran coaching presence on that side of the ball to remain successful. Hopefully the offensive staff actually sticks around after this year. I guess we’ll see how many coaches are fired first!

  4. Since Zimmer doesn’t have to worry about the offense so much, maybe he can figure out a way to shore up the defense? They’re getting picked apart way too much lately.

  5. Nice of Zimmer to put his ego aside and give credit where it’s due. Every NFL coach has to have talented people on their staff to succeed. Once again experience rules the day.

  6. If he thinks Kubiak is the best thing that has happened since he got there and says it out loud, he’d better extend Cousins an apology!

  7. Listen, keeping the Vikings out of the playoffs and the Superbowl is the best thing for their fans. Can you imagine how horrible it would be for the Vikings to go to the Superbowl only to get out-coached and lose to the Patriots? No, it’s best just to let Vikings fans lose out early so then their fans cheer for either the Packers or America’s Team.

  8. And to think Elway’s ego was so big he chased Kubiak and Wade Phillips out of town after winning the SB. Then guess what happened? Denver got worse while Wade Phillips made it to the SB with the Rams and Kubiak may make it to the SB this year with the Vikings. Elway will go down as one of the greatest QBs to ever play but also one of the worst GMs in football.

I agree with a lot of that, except I’d be willing to bet Kubiak wasn’t hired by Zimmer. Please note the article says Zimmer said, at his press conference, “Gary has been tremendous. It’s probably the best thing that’s ever happened to me since I came here.”

If Zimmer had hired him it would have been “Hiring Gary was the best decision I ever made…”

Linguistics matter… a LOT more than most people think they do. Especially in an off-the-cuff answer to a reporter’s question as opposed to a prepared statement. Not that it really matters. The Kubiak hire has been great for the Vikings, no matter whose decision it was. Unless Kubiak takes Zimmer’s job; which I think could happen. Then again, you would be much more in tune with that than I. What do you think? Is Zimmer’s job in danger from Kubiak?

  10. Impressive. Vikes have a top 10 D and O. Deadly combination. Congratulations.

Meanwhile, Packers, even with a cake schedule and refs in their pocket, are in the bottom 10 on both O and D.

You think the Chargers put a beating in them? Wait till you see what the 9ers do to the Pack. I won’t be watching!!!

Kubiak should be in Zimmers chair….

Vikings have the best record in the NFC since Zimmer took over.

And, 1 lucky playoff win to boot!!!

  12. Other than Norv and Priefer (who wanted to move back to his home state — and look how that’s gone), Zimmer’s assitant coaches are universally loyal. He’s realistic and confident enough to hire experienced former head coaches on his staff, not so he has a scapegoat as mind-numbingly repeated by fans out east, but to make the team better. As to Kubiak replacing Zim, anything is possible, but (1) Kubiak doesn’t want the stress of a HC job, (2) the Wilfs like Zim; and (3) Zim’s team isn’t exactly losing this year is it?

  13. I cant tell whose screenname is whose anymore without looking at the ‘thumbs up/down’ first.
Kubiak has been great, as has Dalvin. The biggest difference is the guys up front, the holder on extra points/field goals, and we’re actually getting major contributions from a lot of draft picks compared to last year. Couple plays go a different way and we’re 9-1 right now, 7-3 is still pretty good though. Biggest games of 2019 lay ahead. We’ll see… I want Zimmer coaching here until he no longer wants to coach, bugger off Jerry Jones!

The reason the Defense is getting picked apart is the Defensive line. Sheldon Richardson was a HUGE loss. No push=twice the time in the pocket plus they arent banging the QB around as much. I can’t believe I am saying this but they need to use the 1st round pick or 2nd on this position.

  15. the secondary was having trouble last week because the d line wasnt getting to dak. dont get me wrong the cowboys o line for pass blocking is great, but when dak has 5-8 seconds to throw thats tough on the secondary.
