Kirk Cousins wants to win so he can stay in Minnesota

There are 29.5 million guaranteed reasons Kirk Cousins will be with the Vikings next season.

But the Vikings quarterback told one of his predecessors he knows he needs to win more games if he wants to extend his stay in the land of 10,000 lakes.

In an interview with Vikings legend Brett Favre on SiriusXM NFL radio, Cousins turned on the softball from Favre about what a “great organization” the Vikings were.

“Absolutely, and I think that’s where it starts. To have a chance as a quarterback to win those big games it starts with great ownership, great management, people bringing in the right people around you so you can win those big games,” Cousins said, via Michael Rand of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. “Our fans are outstanding, our new stadium is outstanding and I just feel very privileged to be the quarterback here because not every organization can claim some of the things that we have going here. We have to turn it into wins as much as possible so I can stay here as long as possible. I joke with everybody that ‘guys we’ve got to win because I like it here and I’d like to stay.’”

It’s almost like Cousins played for an organization before which wasn’t quite so together and pleasant.

Whether the Vikings want to extend that relationship after next season remains to be seen.

  1. If you played in DC, even Spanos would seem kind of decent, let alone a Vikings owner who is a Giants fan.

PS: Vikings would have the same amount of wins if they were paying Teddy ( maybe more ). Teddy seems way more genuine to boot.

Theodore at least gets a positive yard on that last drive vs KC i think he at least gets to the a FG attempt.to win the game.

  3. He said way before this article that he has hopes of this working out because he wants to stay in Minnesota long term. Guy has one bad drive against KC and you want to pile on. NEWS FLASH QBs get way too much credit for wins and take way too much heat when the team loses. Cousins has played lights out in the last 6 games, Media and fans trying to predict the way he will play, he’s this, he can’t win in prime time, he can’t win play off game. He never had the talent he has around him now in Minnesota. I always say you’re only as good as your last game, he beat Dallas and played a pretty good game. But as with all Viking wins its against a “weak” opponents and its like the team has to validate it.

The play-off picture is coming into focus and the teams that can run the ball well, use play action and have a good defense are going to go deep. If the Vikings keep it rolling like they did against Dallas who BTW has one of the best D lines in the NFC, they are going to be tough to beat come January when records don’t matter and everyone is 0-0.

  4. Cousins has the most passive personality of any sports figure I’ve ever listened to. Apple Polishing 101. Good Lord, he’s annoying. If Speilman stops too suddenly, Cousins will break his nose on his butt.

Well, that pick in the end-zone to lose in GB was another reason we pile on.
If Vikings win a super-bowl with Cousins, I will be happy. Anything less is a huge disappointment in my book.

  6. He’d better win a Super Bowl for Minny because if he doesn’t his next contract is going to be a one year, fully guaranteed 8 million dollar deal not another 84 million dollar windfall. Seriously, I admire this guy. Has never won anything and gets paid like he’s the QB with six trophies on his resume.

  7. Those who are Cousins detractors fail to grasp his work ethic and his steady improvement as a pro. This guy continues to grow and to learn and obviously is not fit for an era where there are gimmicks like Lame-Mar in Baltimore who will be flashes in the pan and ultimately have no career after five years. I’ve followed Cousins since college and the one thing that I’ve noticed is it takes him at least a year in a system to get his feet firmly planted on the ground. From there he continues to excel. He will not be the flash that will carry a team alone, but he will make a team of average talent players better. He had awful defenses in Washington that made it a requirement to score 30 or more points to win. He early on would force things and seemed restricted in his ability to run when he needed to. It is now apparent in Minnesota that the commitment to running has helped him because he excels at play action and has a surprising career stat of being top five in over 20 and over 50 yard passes.

  8. I think the general consensus is we would rather have Teddy. But to be fair, Kirk has done well this season. Except for the failed 4th quarter drives in KC (bad play calling AND poor execution by Kirk) and the interception in Green Bay, Kirk has been solid. (The whole team lost in Chicago). Kirk has not shown he can come from behind and win. Last year in Green Bay was the exception and not the rule (Carlson’s misses were not his fault). In fact Derek Carr (NOT a HOFer) has 7 more game winning drives in one less game than Kirk – that is not good. Let’s see how the year plays out. Vikings have a very tough schedule to end the year and are already behind Green bay. If he can come back and win the North then maybe we don’t need a QB in the first round. I’d still go for somebody that “dropped” to the third or fourth however.

  9. Why not re-sign? There are 31 other teams in the NFL and not a one will pay him anywhere near $29.5M.

If the Vikings do re-sign him, it will go down in NFL history as one of the biggest personnel mistakes right next to signing a QB for $84M guaranteed and the Hershel Walker trade (notice what they all have in common? they are all Vikings related)

  10. I don’t think Vikings’ brass are going to rush to re-sign him. They are in the middle of a 3–year window with him. They have a lot of aging, core players that are only signed through the 2020 season, not just Cousins. He’s going to need to lead this team down the field in the closing minutes of games if they hope to go deep in the playoffs. So far, other than the GB and Rams games from last year (which Vikes still didn’t win), we haven’t seen it. And if it doesn’t happen this year or next, I think it’s going to be a completely different team, and probably GM and head coach, in 2021.

  11. What some of you are NOT taking into consideration, what were the Vikings supposed to do? At the time there is no way one could have predicted how Teddy was going to be anyone who says different is a liar. Thats what Free Agency is man, you go to the highest bidder. Too many equate price with guarantees, and he better do this , he better to that. Then after that fat contract Rodgers got he should win a Super Bowl then right? Same logic or does Rodgers simply get a pass because he plays for the Packers or the season is a disappointment then?

As of right now Rodgers only bests Kirk in two categories, yards and interceptions. Cousins has more TDs, better completion percentage and bet QB rating. Pick in Green Bay how many weeks ago was that? Seriously? You sound like my wife or ex girlfriend bring things up that happened weeks and years ago. You really don’t have much to pile on now do you? YOU CAN”T WIN EVERY GAME! Maybe if Hunter would have been not been outta position when Kelcie blocked him for the 91 yard TD run the final 2:30 would not of happened.

When you draft, sign or whatever, you are investing just as you do stocks in real life. There is no guarantee of a financial windfall. I get it QB are high profile, but it takes a team to win and not all the loses this season are on his shoulders. He’s playing better and better every week, does that mean Super Bowl? Dunno. Out of all the play-off teams I do know this. Vikings have the best running game right up there with the Saints, Good defense and great running game equals deep play off run. Hell, the Vikings don’t even have Thielen back yet.

  12. Kirk is a good quarterback. He got a bad rap in DC playing for the Redskins. He walked off the field multiple times with the lead only to have the D give up a win. Allen and Snyder were his biggest problems. They are the only team that can create a quarterback controversy with just one quarterback. Just look at what a great job they are doing talent wise in DC these days.
I am rooting for Kirk to do well, I love the Redskins, but hate the owner and his lackeys.

  13. The Vikes did a great job of making sure this team had a chance to win by going all in on a QB who gives us that chance. Kirk has been just about everything we could have hoped for. If you don’t think Kirk is worth the $$$ just ask any Bear fan if they wish they had him. The OL obviously needs to continue to be upgraded but with Kirk, Cook/Mattison, AT, SD and the Tight ends we should be good for quite a bit more than just this year.

  14. Wow…..wasn’t too long ago (after losses to GB & Chicago) most Viking Fans posting in here wanted him cut or traded.

  15. What some of you are NOT taking into consideration, what were the Vikings supposed to do?
    _____________

Sign Theodore or Keenum, One guy lead you tonthe NFC title game…. whatsbwromg with a little consistency at that positio. , after a deep post season run.

  16. Stop being so “Minnesota nice” and play like you’re a pissed off Viking who is sick and tired of having your leadership questioned all the time. How about trying to show some real fire in the belly off the field would help.

  17. Once you’ve tasted World Class, of course you want to stay. Look at all the players who take less to stay and come back after making the mistake of leaving. To the poster who says the Vikings are aging, we have one of the youngest roster and several rising stars to replace the aging Rhodes, Griffen and Joseph. It’s how World Class operates. Our Superbowl window is every year. Unlike, our ugly sister to the East who will go in to yet another 30 years of losing records once their QB retires….

  18. At this point in time. The most important thing is to fix the CB play by getting them to play the ball by get getting their collective heads turned around to track it in the air. Cousins is fine, he’s adapted to the Team Kubiak Offense and Stefanski has improved in his play calling. Using Rudolph(passes past the 1rst down marker and Red zone) how he is supposed to be used is huge also vs that TE screen. PS. Dozier or Collins would be a upgradr at LG over Elflein.

When they were Vikings, you never said anything nice about them. You said they were terrible quarterbacks. Now that Keenum has proven he was a one-year wonder by utterly failing for two other teams, you’re saying he was the answer?

  21. Super Bowl or you’re gone. If you relax, don’t let the game & circumstance psych you out, like against the Cowboys & just play your game, you have a chance to take the Vikings to one & even a chance to win. Especially with Dalvin Cook. If the defense can keep from blowing it. This team as a legitimate shot.

More than all three of them combined.

  23. Uh, oh. I saw the “playing for less because it’s a privilege” card being played again.

    Bizarro World.

  24. Cousins is an average NFL QB — the best we can hope for is above-average, and he’s playing above-average now. I can live with that.

Funny how those out east rip Spielman for the Cousins’ cap hit when they had to sign defensive players for twice that amount (not tom mention Rodgers cap hit) because they’ve drafted like crap for the last 5 years. Now we all see the Smith brothers playing one-dimensional football going for sacks and opening running lanes to increase their stats.

  25. He’s under contract through next season. His contract shouldn’t even be talked about. When his contract is up, you evaluate the position and see what your options are. You don’t automatically cut him if he didn’t win the SB. That’s just dumb thinking. You don’t automatically sign him either. You evaluate your options and go with the best option.

Garopppolo has twice as many Super Bowl titles as Rodgers. Try to keep up.

  27. Since 1961 the Vikings have had more HOF quarterbacks, more All-Pro quarterbacks, and more Pro-Bowl designee quarterbacks than the Packers.

Rodgers, with one Lombardi to go with his SB MVP trophy, has outperformed every single one of them.

He’s got that goin’ for ‘im.

If I was a player there are places I would take less to play. Boston, New York, Miami, Phoenix, Cali, Seattle. Then there are places I wold expect fair compensation. Most everywhere else. Then there are the places that would need to pay me much much much more to have to be at. Green Bay and Buffalo. Its pretty much common sense.

What are you people? On Dope? They didnt sign Teddy because they had reservations if he would be ready let alone be able to start. Keenum doesnt have the arm Kirk does. Ask current Skins fans how that worked out. He got benched for a rook this year. I love Teddy hell we all do still, but you have to do whats best for the team not the person.

  30. It’s such a privilege to play for Minnesota, where it’s colder than Wisconsin, that players volunteer to take less. Thanks for clearing that up.

weather is a small factor for where the players want to play. So is the quality of the training facilities. The biggest factor is quality of life. Sorry Green Bay.

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

That wasn’t the subject, and the whole training facilities “thing” you’re (still) obsessed with is negligible in the grand scheme of things. The subject was Viking players voluntarily accepting less money for the privilege of playing in Minnesota. Sorry cheesey. Quality of life? You really want to compare? Do so at your own risk.

The same guy that picked Bama over LSU last weekend.

  35. I think they probably retain him but not at the crazy money he was making. Nobody else will chase him and pay him more, after seeing how he under-whelmed in Minnesota.

The subject was cousins wanting to stay in minnesota not players voluntarily accepting less money for the privilege of playing in Minnesota. Just because one poster says something does not make it the subject no matter how yard you try to make it. Btw where do you choose to live? Not the place nobody else wants to he either. ohhhhhh I’m being risky.

  37. Let us take a look at the numbers shall we? Ranked by passer rating according to the Football Database website

    Cousins #3 passr rating 112.0
    Rodgers #7 passer rating 102.7

    Cousins 18 TDs
    Rodgers 17 TDs

    Cousins Completion %69.1
    Rodgers Completion %64.8

    Cousins attempts 285
Rodgers attempts 347 – more attempts playing from behind I would imagine no running game to eat the clock.

Cousins numbers hardly “under whelming”. As it stands right now A A Ron isnt playing up to his contract right? He makes more than Cousins.

  38. I honestly think the Vikings would be foolish if they didn’t re-sign him. He’s their best chance to get to a Super Bowl at some point. There’s not a huge crop of experienced, winning QBs out there. I would say the only monkey on his back is the fact that his track record in big games is sketchy. Now granted, this past game was one game that he actually was able to work some of that out. I don’t think they’re getting to the Super Bowl this year anyway, however, at least with him, they have a chance. NFC road to the Super Bowl is going to be rough on any team this year.
