AFC playoff picture: A change atop the AFC South

Getty Images

The Colts were on the outside looking in at the playoffs at this time last week, but their positioning looks a lot better after Week 11.

They beat the Jaguars on Sunday while the Texans lost to the Ravens, which led to Indianapolis leapfrogging Houston into first place in the AFC South. They’ll get a chance to solidify that placement on Thursday night when they travel to face the Texans in a game that will also impact the way the Wild Card race shapes up.

Here’s how the overall playoff picture looks this week:

LEADERS
1. Patriots (9-1) It wasn’t the prettiest offensive performance against the Eagles, but the win keeps them clear of the Ravens.

2. Ravens (8-2) The division is firmly in hand and they still have that tiebreaker over the Patriots.

3. Chiefs (7-4) Week 13 against the Raiders could be for first place in the AFC West.

4. Colts (6-4) A win on Thursday would mean a sweep of the Texans and a clear path to the division title.

5. Bills (7-3) The schedule gets tougher after this week’s Broncos visit, but banking another win would leave the Bills in good position.

6. Texans (6-4) Losing Thursday would make for a much murkier playoff outlook in Houston.

OUTSIDE LOOKING IN
7. Raiders (6-4) Extending their winning streak to four games would set up quite the finish in the AFC West.

8. Steelers (5-5) Last Thursday’s loss was a helmet to the face of their playoff hopes.

9. Titans (5-5) With two games against the Texans and one against the Colts, the Titans can still make noise in the AFC South.

10. Browns (4-6) The schedule’s fairly forgiving, but no Myles Garrett will make life difficult for Cleveland.

11. Jaguars (4-6) Losing to the Titans this week will leave the Jaguars with very long postseason odds.

12. Chargers (4-7) Head coach Anthony Lynn said his team needed to win on Monday night, but they failed to do so and winning out might not even help them now.

13. Broncos (3-7) Blowing a 20-point halftime lead in Minnesota effectively snuffed any lingering playoff hopes.

14. Jets (3-7) A two-game winning streak has dialed down the heat without doing much for the Jets’ postseason chances.

15. Dolphins (2-8) With the Browns and Eagles next up on the schedule, the Dolphins can still spoil things for other teams.

ELIMINATED
16. Bengals (0-10) The Bengals were unofficially eliminated from the playoffs in September, but it didn’t become official until this week.

  3. So as a Raider fan do we need Houston to win Thursday since they already beat us and them winning the division mean Colts will be push to trying to win the wild card and Oakland already beat the colts this year and lost to Houston. a PFT can you explain what games should be rooting for this Sunday!!!

  4. The Ravens look like the clear favorite, and sometimes looks are deceiving, but at the same time sometimes when you don’t know something it works to your advantage. Like if the Playoffs started this week the Ravens are so young they don’t know they’re supposed to be scared come playoff time. So they are more likely to simply ignore the big moment and go play football. However Logic would say if the season ended today, and the Ravens had to go up to Foxboro, then the Pats would have the advantage due to their playoff experience and how difficult it is to go up there and win, but the Pats haven’t fixed their offense yet and it’s getting late in the season. Can they fix it? I guess they could figure things out here rather quickly, and you hate to bet against them, but at the same time if the receivers can’t run the right routes, and they can’t get separation then they’re in trouble. Add to that fact their tackles are horrible and Brady has no time to do anything, and what you have is and offense that can’t get out of it’s own way with a stellar defense carrying the load. Is it enough to make it to the Superbowl? Well if we look at Denver a few years back the answer is yes they won despite Peyton Manning, but I’m sure the Patriots would feel a whole lot better if their offense was in Sync. It’s gonna be either Baltimore or New England with the outlier being the Raiders sneaking up on everybody, but the Chiefs aren’t going anywhere they’ve shown that once again they can’t stop anyone. We’ll see folks it’s gonna be a great post season in the AFC no matter what

  5. The Texans were lethargic coming off a bye week. After getting pounded Sunday and with only 4 days rest, I suspect the Colts will lay a whipping on them…again!

It’s clear that Bill O’Brien’s Texans ARE NOT well prepared week to week. Well, it’s clear to everyone except Texans ownership!

I get your overall point, but any team who is genuinely scared as they prepare for a playoff game has absolutely no business playing in the postseason.

  9. I’m sure the Steelers will make the playoffs just like they did last year when they got on their knees and prayed for the Browns to win. LOL

Ironically the game against the Sea Dorks was the only one they had a real chance of winning.

    Sea Dorks? Really?

  11. AFC South is quite interesting to watch, Indi could have been out in from by a few games had Jacoby not got injured, Texans cant stay consistent and the Titans have turned things around under Tannehill, TANNEHIL?? there are defiantly some Miami fans thinking ” c’mon man”

Gut says Indi take it but as long as Houston and Titans stay close, it could go any which way

This “helmet to the face” narrative has got to stop.

Thank you. Agreed. People seem to have a hard enough time understanding factual, filmed events as it is already, without the extra obstacle of false narratives.

I know you are focused on your campaign but don’t expect others to bail you out.

Bills will beat DEN, JETS, 1/2 of DAL and PIT and go 106 which gets them a wild card.

    Haters gonna hate.

Who really cares what you think?

  17. Funny, if the Ravens, Chiefs or Colts were 9-1 everyone would be falling all over themselves proclaiming their greatness. But it’s the Pats, so instead everyone focuses on their perceived weaknesses.

  18. Aaaahhh the Bills “mafia” in full force …… clowns
Buffalo has 5 wins against the Jets, Giants , Bengals & 2 vs Miami …. yeah you have to beat the teams on your schedule- however they are overrated: looking good against teams with 3rd string players on the field.
If they make the playoffs who are they gonna beat on the road ???……..

You obsess over the Bills every week and all they do is win, win, win. Maybe you should worry about your Raiders who are still on the outside looking in?

  21. Not so sure I’m ready to pencil in the Ravens as the division winners yet. They lost to the Browns and barely beat the Steelers the first time around. Still a lot of football to be played.

    — Agreed but I am simple. Off the field that was borderline assault. So I know we’re looking for gags and laughs. That was just seriously uncool.

I can see up to 4 wins on that remaining schedule, but I’d wager they end up 10-6. Obviously it won’t come easy, but I think they’ll pull it off.

That’s a strange take… you think they won’t beat ANY of these teams? Not even the Broncos? How about the Jets?

There are a few solid teams on this schedule, but they are all pretty vulnerable. I think 11-5 is well within Oakland’s reach (on paper at least).

  27. The AFC is the Patriots and Ravens. No other AFC teams are relevant until proven otherwise. There are a lot of bad teams in this league.
