Eagles remain high on Nelson Agholor despite his struggles

Nelson Agholor has played the most snaps of any Eagles’ receiver this season. Yet, he has four games with two or fewer catches, including one with none. He has six games with 24 or fewer yards. He has one 100-yard game. He has not scored a touchdown in the past seven games.

Despite the mounting evidence that Agholor has taken a step back this season, the Eagles remain high on him.

Offensive coordinator Mike Groh disputed the notion that Agholor has regressed in his fifth season.

“I would say that’s probably not fair,” Groh said Tuesday, via Zack Rosenblatt of NJ Advance Media. “I would say that over the last two years he’s had to wear a lot of different hats in our offense due to the attrition at the position. One of his strengths is his mental flexibility and his ability to learn. He knows the entire system as well as anybody, so he’s able to handle a lot from that standpoint, but the flip side of that coin is then he gets moved around.”

In 2017, Agholor played exclusively in the slot. The Eagles traded for Golden Tate during the 2018 season to play the slot, which forced Agholor to move. This year, injuries to other receivers have had Agholor playing wherever they need him.

“In 2017, he was really able to just stay in one spot,” Groh said. “Each and every week, we were healthy the entire year and we had the same three, four guys rotating and performing the same jobs. His job description has changed over the last couple of years due to necessity. I understand the question but, to me, he’s still the same player.”

Agholor has 36 catches for 322 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games, while playing 88.6 percent of the snaps.

  1. Nobody is going to give him 9 million a year on a long term contract. But I can see him re signing with the Eagles to be strictly the slot receiver for a lot less money .

  2. Ok. He had to play different positions. And if his issue was running wrong routes, making wrong reads, I could buy that.

But what does playing a different position have to do with dropping a perfectly thrown pass to you as you’re streaking down the sideline like in Atlanta?

  3. Maybe Groh is the problem if he thinks everything and everyone is going great. He couldn’t integrate Golden Tate last year but the Giants seem to have no issue getting Tate the ball.

Many hats or not, there has been at least one play involving Agholar in a number of games that was the difference between winning and losing. When you see clips of Agholar this season, it’s not for his highlights.

  4. As a seahawks fan, i am quite confused how the eagles are favored in this game. Be Encouraged Eagles fans, vegas usually knows whats up.

  5. To the Seahawks fan, once the injury report comes out expect that line to change. Your D co doesn’t even to make a game plan if Alshon doesn’t play. If you stop the run, you’ll stop the pass.

Groth NEEDS to go…he’s a terrible OC. It’s becomming more and more evident Frank Reich’s play calling got them to the Super Bowl.

    ********
wentz went 5-6 last year groh won with foles so the problem is wentz

  8. Ah no, Groh is horrible. Cannot game plan for Wentz to save his life. Bland play calling not playing to Wentz’s strengths.

  10. Sorry but Agholor would likely be a 4th WR on any other team. We have been terrible at the WR position this entire 21st century. We cannot draft a WR whose decent, the FA’s we pick up dont pan out etc. We just have horrible decision making on a WR, so I dont expect anything better than what we have. Honestly, the best WR Philly has had in the last 10-15 years was TO and thats sad to say.

  11. The lack of accountability in this organization is appalling.
How long are you going to let coaches fail at scheming, medical staff fail at diagnosises or rehabbing players, talent evaluators missing on picks and FA finds and players simply showing NO HEART.

Nelson Should have been cut the moment that Dallas game ended. I would have go his playbook jersey from him before he even got to plane home. 4 weeks later this kid is still trash, still dogging it, still making excuses and still not putting in effort.

Jeff Lurie is too passive of a leader. Therefore, the trickle down of that spineless approach lets everyone relax.

  12. Groh must GO this offseason! I remember saying that last year at about this exact same time, late Nov.
Yes it is obvious Frank Reich was the sole reason for the SB52 run!
