PFT’s Week 12 picks

Getty Images

I had my chance, but I blew it.

After cutting the MDS lead from eight games to six, it’s back to eight after he swept our Week 11 head-to-head disagreements.

This week, we disagree on four games. If I get swept, it’s over. If I pull off the sweep, it gets interesting.

I was 10-4 last week, and MDS went 12-2. For the year, he’s now 107-55. I’m at 99-63.

Colts at Texans

MDS’s take: The winner of this game will be the favorite to win the AFC South, and I think the Texans will bounce back from last week’s ugly loss to the Ravens and turn in a big performance.

MDS’s pick: Texans 30, Colts 20.

Florio’s take: The Texans are reeling, the Colts are rising. But for Jacoby Brissett’s knee injury, they’d be 8-2. They’ll be 7-4 — and a team that could disrupt a Ravens-Patriots AFC title game.

Florio’s pick: Colts 27, Texans 24.

Seahawks at Eagles

MDS’s take: Traveling across the country for an early game won’t be easy for the Seahawks, but I see Russell Wilson having a big game as Seattle earns an important win in the NFC playoff race.

MDS’s pick: Seahawks 27, Eagles 21.

Florio’s take: Backs-Against-The-Wall Eagles are the best Eagles.

Florio’s pick: Eagles 27, Seahawks 24.

Lions at Washington

MDS’s take: The Lions’ defense has been a mess this season and is only getting worse, but a visit to Washington to face Dwayne Haskins should cure that.

MDS’s pick: Lions 21, Washington 13.

Florio’s take: It’s fitting that the team with ownership that traces back to Henry Ford is playing the NFL’s current version of the Edsel.

Florio’s pick: Lions 20, Washington 13.

Raiders at Jets

MDS’s take: The Raiders still have some work to do in their rebuilding effort, but they’re further along than most were expecting in Year 2 for Jon Gruden, and they’ll get another win on Sunday to remain in playoff contention.

MDS’s pick: Raiders 20, Jets 17.

Florio’s take: Jamal Adams is going to make Derek Carr wish he’d stayed home and watched Heidi.

Florio’s pick: Jets 20, Raiders 17.

Panthers at Saints

MDS’s take: The Saints shouldn’t have much trouble shutting down a struggling Panthers offense.

MDS’s pick: Saints 17, Panthers 7.

Florio’s take: Each of the three quarterbacks on New Orleans’ roster is better than either of the options available to Carolina.

Florio’s pick: Saints 31, Panthers 20.

Dolphins at Browns

MDS’s take: It’s probably too little, too late for the Browns to get to the playoffs, but they shouldn’t have much trouble earning their third straight victory on Sunday.

MDS’s pick: Browns 28, Dolphins 14.

Florio’s take: The surge continues for a Cleveland team that can still make it to January.

Florio’s pick: Browns 30, Dolphins 13.

Steelers at Bengals

MDS’s take: The Steelers are staying in playoff contention and the Bengals are staying in the lead for the first overall pick in the draft.

MDS’s pick: Steelers 20, Bengals 17.

Florio’s take: The Steelers aren’t the Steelers that we’re used to, but the Bengals have given new meaning to bungling.

Florio’s pick: Steelers 24, Bengals 16.

Giants at Bears

MDS’s take: Matt Nagy’s offense has been a mess this season, but I think facing the Giants should be just the thing to get them back on track.

MDS’s pick: Bears 27, Giants 17.

Florio’s take:  A team that has no business being in the playoff race somehow stays on the fringes of it.

Florio’s pick: Bears 27, Giants 17.

Broncos at Bills

MDS’s take: I like the way Brandon Allen, the Broncos’ young quarterback, is playing, and I’m tempted to pick the Broncos to pull the upset. But after their collapse against the Vikings last week, I’m not sure I can trust the Broncos to play well on the road for four quarters.

MDS’s pick: Bills 20, Broncos 17.

Florio’s take: Josh Allen > Brandon Allen.

Florio’s pick: Bills 13, Broncos 10.

Buccaneers at Falcons

MDS’s take: The Falcons are turning things around — probably too late to make a difference this season, but possibly not too late to save coach Dan Quinn’s job. I think they’ll win another one on Sunday.

MDS’s pick: Falcons 24, Buccaneers 20.

Florio’s take: Dirk Koetter gets his revenge. (How dare they fire a guy who deserved it.)

Florio’s pick: Falcons 30, Buccaneers 20.

Jaguars at Titans

MDS’s take: The Jaguars laid an egg in Nick Foles‘ return on Sunday, and they’re in for another rough game on Sunday against a Titans team that is still in playoff contention.

MDS’s pick: Titans 28, Jaguars 17.

Florio’s take: As the Colts and Texans jockey for the AFC South lead, the Titans continue to lurk.

Florio’s pick: Titans 23, Jaguars 21.

Cowboys at Patriots

MDS’s take: Dak Prescott is playing outstanding football right now, but the Patriots’ pass defense will give him fits.

MDS’s pick: Patriots 20, Cowboys 13.

Florio’s take: Bill Belichick > Kellen Moore.

Florio’s pick: Patriots 20, Cowboys 17.

Packers at 49ers

MDS’s take: San Francisco has been a little shaky in recent weeks, but I see the 49ers’ defense shutting down Aaron Rodgers and earning a big win.

MDS’s pick: 49ers 28, Packers 10.

Florio’s take: The 49ers are banged up, the Packers are rested, and Aaron Rodgers will surely be reminding his teammates of what happened the last time they played in California. (I’m reserving the right to change this pick during Football Night in America, based on the 49ers’ actives and inactives.)

Florio’s pick: Packers 27, 49ers 23.

Ravens at Rams

MDS’s take: Are the Rams still contenders? This is the game when they can make a statement, but I just don’t think they’re playing well enough right now to beat a team like the Ravens.

MDS’s pick: Ravens 27, Rams 17.

Florio’s take: Here’s something that would have been inconceivable a year ago — the Ravens’ offense is significantly better than the Rams’ offense.

Florio’s pick: Ravens 30, Rams 23.

  1. The winners:

Colts, ‘Hawks, ‘Skins, Raiders, Saints, Fins, Bengals, Giants, Bills, Falcons, Titans, Cowboys, 49ers, and Ravens.

  2. Saints over Panthers – Saints are producing a strong season and the Panthers not so much.

Falcons over Bucs – Falcons seemed to have addressed their issues and have not allowed a TD in the last 2 games {Panthers and Saints}.. Bucs are circling the drain..
side note: predicting Winston has 3 turnovers in this game..fumble (of course); 2 ints. (1 pick 6 and one the Falcons score from.

  3. Florio’s take: The 49ers are banged up, the Packers are rested, and Aaron Rodgers will surely be reminding his teammates of what happened the last time they played in California.
    ——-
And if the packer’s lose, Aaron Rodgers will surely blame everyone but himself.

  4. Look, I get it Florio, you gotta take some risks to get back in the game with MDS, but Seattle will win. Picking Philly is silly.

  5. Both upsets this week will be in primetime. For some odd reason, the Rams play better on Monday Night Football. Just watch how they scored 54 points on the Chiefs last season. As for the Packers, there’s a good chance they’ll win knowing that George Kittle will be out. Not to mention, Emmanuel Sanders re-injured his ribs.

  6. “but I see the 49ers’ defense shutting down Aaron Rodgers”

Can we get this printed and placed in Aaron’s locker while he is at practice today?

Aaron does not need extra motivation, but I see no harm in providing some. Just don’t tell him what site it came from because then he won’t care even a little bit.😉

    #GoPackGo!🏈

  7. Patriots are going down this week .they’re not facing a team missing their starting running back and 2 starting wide receivers like last week where they barely squeaked one out

  8. MDS’s take: San Francisco has been a little shaky in recent weeks, but I see the 49ers’ defense shutting down Aaron Rodgers and earning a big win.

    MDS’s pick: 49ers 28, Packers 10.

You’re really dating yourself with that Jets/Raiders comment Florio…. you actually don’t look old enough to even remember that game…..

    ________________________________________________________________

For being an observant fan, you seem to be ignoring all of the Patriots’ injuries this season, in favor for their opponents’ misfortunes. Notice that James Develin, David Andrews, Jakob Johnson, Patrick Chung, Nate Ebner, Isaiah Wynn, and others are missing? Mohamed Sanu could even miss a few weeks now. Not to mention, let’s not pretend and act like they still have Gronk. This team could really use Antonio Brown right now.

  11. Hey football season rules ..yeah yeah well typical of patriot fans to make excuses only one player on that list any kind of a Difference Maker and that’s Isaiah Wynn. The three players missing the Eagle game last week were three of their best players. Enough said go back to your hot pockets in the basement

Serious question here: When was the last time one of your predictions was correct?

Rams are going to shock the world.

    ********************************************
They already have. It’s “shocking” how much they have under-performed. “Shocking” I tell you!

  14. Packers get exposed as the frauds they are Sunday Night. Sorry Florio, Haven’t you been watching them? A silly INT with the Vikings 1st a goal he’d never throw now. Lions easily win as refs gave both those games to the lions/Vikes, plus so many indicators the Packers aren’t the team we think. Texans over Colts???? Where is your head Florio? Oh well, there’s always next year.

  15. Browns, Ravens and others have demonstrated that NE can be run on. Look for Zeke to have a good game behind that O Line.

    Cowboys 24
    Patriots 20

Ravens to be number 1 seed in AFC when the weekend is over.

  16. Man, Florio just loves on the Eagles always.

Were their backs against the wall last week when they came out and put up a total of ten points?

  17. We should inform MDS that there is more to the Packers offense and team than just Aaron Rodgers. I know that MDS and his boss are obsessed with Aaron Rodgers, but the Packers have proven the ability to win games in a variety of ways this season.

Aaron has been somewhat “shut down” in a number of games that the Packers have won this season.

Good luck with that pick though.😏

  18. Pats by only one score? Come on. Look to NE to get it together after last week. Prescott will have trouble against NE’s #1 D.

  19. Wondering if Wade Phillips will be able to dial up a wrinkle to slow down Jackson and the Ravens’ running game.

  20. If Dallas’ offensive line can’t handle the Patriot’s “hybrid” front 7 and get Zeke going this can and will get ugly. There are 3 former all pros on our line. If there’s any game they need to show up for this year its this one. If we somehow beat the Patriots and the Eagles lose to the Seahawks I think we will have a great shot at winning the east. That’s IF though…

  21. “only one player on that list any kind of a Difference Maker and that’s Isaiah Wynn”

    Thanks for your clueless observation

James Develin – Best blocking back in the league and crucial to the run game

    David Andrews – Starting center

Jakob Johnson – the one out of 6 you are correct about not being a difference maker, except he was the backup to Develin

Patrick Chung – starting safety and one of the better safeties in the league

Nate Ebner – great special teamer has often “made a difference” on those plays

    Isaiah Wynn – starting LT

And yeah almost every team has equivalent injuries, but don’t pretend lack of these guys doesn’t significantly impact the Pats just so you can while about mean ol’ New England

  22. You messed up Florio picking GB/Refs over the 49ers. I thought you wanted to make it interesting? The only way GB wins is the refs make it so bluntly obvious that they are being paid off by the biggest charity case in NFL history.

  23. Gotta admit I normally root for MDS (sorry Florio) but in this case I am picking Florio this week. Couple I do not agree with, but I think MF picks up a couple of games.

  24. If the Packers beat the 49ers this week, it will be almost impossible for them to not win the division.

At least the refs can’t help the Vikings win this week.

Silver linings I guess? One week out of the football season when they can’t?
    ______________

This is a bye week for the Vikings. They were not mentioned in this article. Now can you please stop talking about how obsessed Viking fans are with the Packers?

  26. Look for the Bungles to get their first win of the year. The Steelers just can’t win the games they’re “supposed” to win. Seen it over & over. The loss to the Browns last week was a back breaker, Connor is out, Ju-Ju out?, and there’s still the messy Rudolph/Garret issue.

  27. I’ts sad the (NEVER WON A SUPERBOWL) Vikings are on a bye AND this thread is titled “Week 12 Picks” yet their fans still make comments about the Packers.

  28. Bengals are desperate for a win, the game is in Cincy, and the Steelers are very banged up at WR and RB and have a second string QB starting who was not expected to start this year. Great chance for the Bengals to get their first win. As a Steeler fan I hope I am wrong but at least I am realistic. 😉

  29. I am just so glad that we’re starting to see better primetime games. At least this week’s games are good. Please keep the Chargers away from these night games. Oh, I spoke too soon. The Chargers are playing the Vikings on Sunday Night Football during Week 15.

  30. I’m always so surprised by the amount and frequency of comments of the Vikings fans toward the Packers and wonder how those fans of the Purple have the time to post all of their silly nonsense……then it hit me. All you guys have no job, no self-respect, no place of your own, no significant other, no reason to even get out from under your Viking bed spread. Makes perfect sense. Keep it up boys, your checks are in the mail!

Look for that game to be flexed out by Cowboys/Rams or maybe Titans/Texans. Anyway, I hope so. I’m kinda tired of watching Rivers throw INTs.

    Dear tokyosandblaster:
With the story and all the comments, YOU are the only person bringing up THE MINNESOTA VIKINGS, WOW! are THE MINNESOTA VIKINGS, in your head! So much so I’ll bet you think about THE MINNESOTA VIKINGS, about every other thought, IN YOUR DREAMS, And at Breakfast!
It will only be worse after THE MINNESOTA VIKINGS play “germ bay” at HOME late in the season FOR ONCE, and take the Division Title from you. Just think you will have another whole off season to think about THE MINNESOTA VIKINGS, and steam about it!
    All in good fun.
    Sincerely,
    Kirk and the Boys…

  33. The Cowboys are saying the right things and sound like they art in a good state of mind coming into the game in Foxborough. I doubt they will self destruct unless they fall behind by a significant margin. The Patriots will have to earn it, ans right now, they are down to just two rookie wide receivers as the other three are not practicing due to injury. One, Edelman, will likely play. Dorsett had a head injury and may not be cleared. Sanu may be out for a few weeks. Limited wideout options and a suspect run game may continue to require Tom Brady to carefully manage the game, throw the ball away as needed, limit turnovers, and take advantage of opportunities when they arise, and let the defense and special teams do their thing. Don’t worry about stats or the Talking Heads. It’s about winning, and right now, this is how it can be done. It doesn’t matter who gets the credit, similar to the early years. I still trust TB12 more than any other QB. Don’t let the naysayers under your skin Tom. Just do you, and remember The Four Agreements…

    The Four Agreements are:

    Be impeccable with your word.
    Don’t take anything personally.
    Don’t make assumptions.
    Always do your best.

  34. So your strategy is to pick bad teams and hope you luck out? LOL
There is no way the Eagles are beating Russel Wilson and there is no way the Jets are beating the Raiders. Better luck next year Mike.

  35. Clara fans are on nosedive watch. I assure all Packer fans, they might be talking a little trash but deep down they are getting the lighter fluid ready for their dumpsters.

Packers will crush the niners as Santa Clara dumpster dives their way to 11-5 and a one and done playoff disappointment.

    ——————————————————————————-

Yeah … like Seattle “crushed” the Niners with an overtime field goal.

    Clown

  39. I’m at 108 (99th percentile, according to Pigskin Pick ‘Em), and I don’t feel good about ANY picks this week. Not a single lock, and just about every good team loses games like these every year.

The only result that would shock me this weekend is all the favorites winning. I’m most sure that we’ll have some unexpected results. So many key injuries muddy the picture even more.

  40. I think it’s safe to say at this point that NO ONE wastes more time and space on PFT comment sections than Packers & Vikings fans.

Please, folks – spare the rest of us this worthless junk that seems to take up 50% of every comment section. No one cares.

    Patsies* got ’em BOTH beat.

  42. I hope the check I used to pay off the referees clears by game time. I (obviously) was late on two other games for the Packers. People think I do it to help the Packers win games. Nope, I do it because it drives Viking trolls straight up the wall. I paid for two other teams that beat the Vikings this year too, just for grins! If Viking trolls don’t stop whining, I may pony up to make certain the Vikings all-time NFL record for one-and-done postseason appearances gets extended as well. Wouldn’t that be fun? And so easy!

  43. Packers clowns are so obsessed with the vikings fans. Vikings don’t play this week, and the cheesebrains just can’t restrain themselves from bringing up the vikings and their fans. What a bunch of clowns these packers fanboys are. They act like an ex girlfriend that won’t go away. Vikings fans have put restraining orders against the crazy mentally insane packers fans, but they won’t listen, continue to break the restraining order and hide in the bushes all day and all night watching vikings fans eat and sleep 24/7.

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

The difference between Packer fans and Viking fans is chickens. We have thirteen of them. Viking fans want at least one chicken but have trouble getting eggs to hatch. That doesn’t stop them from counting chickens they don’t have or from saying our chickens are too old! That’s how badly they want one chicken!

  45. I think this young Raiders team may have learned a lesson about over looking who they are playing last week. it wont happen again. Oakland rolls in NJ.

  46. If Miller & Chubb didn’t get to Carr, and Mack didn’t get to Carr, not sure why you’d think Adams will be a problem.

  47. Really looking forward to Cowboys/Patriots Sunday. Measuring stick game for Dallas, (another one- they’ve failed in previous opportunities this season). Always love to see where they stack up against the league’s best and the Patriot’s D is definitely at or near the top. As a Cowboy fan, it feels like the whole season kind of comes down to this game. Win in Foxborough and they can use it as a springboard to play their best football at the right time. Lose and it’s the same old Cowboys- tease with individual talent and high expectations only to figure out a new, heartbreaking way to piss away a season. Most interested to see the coaching/game plan from Dallas. You know what you’re going to get from Belichick- an opponent specific game plan that takes away your best and forces you to beat them another way and mistake free football. With Garret and Moore, it’s their biggest challenge of the year and they’ve wilted in big games so far. Hope they rise to the occasion. Can’t wait for Sunday! I’ll go out on a limb and say Cowboys 27- Patriots 24
