Jerry Jones: “Those coaches are out there at my ultimate decision”

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wants head coach Jason Garrett and his staff to understand that they’ll be out of work if Jones isn’t satisfied with their job performance.

Asked today on 105.3 The Fan how he feels about the coaching staff, whom he criticized after Sunday’s loss to the Patriots, Jones answered, “The same way that I felt then.”

Jones made clear that he will make the final decisions about the Cowboys’ coaching staff, and right now he doesn’t sound satisfied, suggesting that the Cowboys were out-coached by Bill Belichick and his staff.

“When you’re General Manager, which I am, those coaches are out there at my ultimate decision,” Jones said. “It’s very much within my realm of purview, if you will, to not only be standing there as an owner but be standing there as the General Manager who put the staff there to begin with. People seem to think it’s particularly harsh to have criticism and they think when you look at the other side of the field and call a job well done, that might mean that’s extraordinary criticism of the job you’ve done on the other side of the field.”

Jones said he’s beyond disappointed that the Cowboys lost on Sunday.

“Disappointed is not the word. There’s no question that we were given an opportunity, there were things we could have taken advantage of,” Jones said.

With five games remaining, Garrett is running out of time to impress his boss.

  1. I can’t wait to see Jerry implode this team. The Bengals might have some extra competition next year for a top 5 pick.

  2. The Supreme Commander has spoken. Too bad he hasn’t drafted a defense that gets after the quarterback on a regular basis.

  3. Jerry should be the next coach. He is already the head of scouting, team doctor and “gm”.

  4. That’s the nice thing about being an owner within a major professional sports monopoly; you never get called out for being an egotistical jerk, and you never suffer the financial consequences that accompany mismanagement.

  5. Let me see if I’ve got this right: as we head into the home stretch of the season, an owner kneecaps his coaching staff. How ya spose the locker room will take that? Uh-huh, thought so

  6. Jones has no one to blame but himself. Garrett should have been gone years ago. This team has, both this year and the past few years, too much talent to not have been a more consistent winner. They are lucky they are in a pathetic division. Hard to believe that this team can still make the playoffs

  7. For a football coach, being head coach of the Dallas Cowboys can be seen as one of the most coveted positions in football. That said, having to deal with Jerry Jones may actually be painful enough to make it lose its appeal.

  8. The job security Jerry gives off is such a warm and fuzzy feeling especially 2 days before Thanksgiving… He’s like the Grinch that stole Xmas.

  9. Wouldn’t you think Garrett is getting a little tired of the pressure Jerry puts on him? Garrett was in over his head from jump. It’s unfortunate he didn’t take the time all these years to take advantage of the opportunity given to develop into a good coach. Probably should have taken the Ravens job when offered.

  10. Jerry just wanted to remind everyone that he’s in charge just in case someone forgot, and he also wanted to remind everyone that when he spends money he expects a return on that investment, and he’s been spending and spending with NO RETURN since 1996. Romo was gonna bring him to the promised land, and he loved Tony Romo and still does, but that didn’t happen even tho the Cowboys have had the best offensive line in football multiple years, and they’ve had one of the best wide receivers in football in T.O even tho T.O never led the league he was still considered one of the best, and they’ve had the league leader in rushing yards three times and still couldn’t close the deal. Now he’s got Dak and he isn’t sold on Dak yet and I don’t blame him. Every big game Dak loses is costing Dak money he should have taken the Cowboys offer when they were willing to make him one of the top paid quarterbacks in history. If they don’t make the playoffs, or if they go one and done like years past I’d be willing to bet Dak isn’t even top 5 when it’s all said and done

  11. Jerry has woken up to the urgrnt reality that 2 windows are quickly closing: The window for the Cowboys to win it all, and his own personal window; Jerry wants to be around long enough to see his team win again.
He’s starting to sound cranky & desperate.

  12. Not a fan, Jerry should fire himself. For all the bad decisions he has made. He put this team and staff together. He wanted a yes man. That’s what he has. Go Vikings!

  13. Jason Garrett is Mike McCarthy 2.0. He won’t coach again, but for some reason he thinks he has an opportunity up in NY. You don’t Jason. You just don’t, okay?

  14. I know he shouldn’t get involved in the coaching side but the talent is very good on both sides of the ball and their record doesn’t reflect that.

  15. He’s right. No different than any other owner. They had opportunities to win a game and didn’t. That’s on the coaches, on both sides of the field.

  16. How does anyone stand this guy? He’s seen far, FAR more failure under his tenure as “GM” than success — and then he routinely passive-aggressively airs his grievances with active coaches to the media. For god’s sake, dude. Hire a GM, go sit on a beach somewhere, count your money, and stop setting such a terrible example.

  17. Jerry knows that he has his ace in the hole rested and waiting. Dave Campo is ready to step in for a 2nd stint as Cowboys HC if Jones jettisons Garrett.

I feel the same way about the Steeler’s. Tomlin has had so much talent and let it go to waste.

  19. @tribeofone
The defense coaching staff and players aren’t the issue. When you lose games 10-12, 22-24, 28-24, 13-9 and 34-24 the game the offense gave up the ball several times against the Packers. The rules favor offense in this league and with the weapons they have on offense they should be putting up a lot of points.

  20. I still say the day this guy bought the Cowboys was the day the NFL started spiraling downward. Greed, selfish, etc. Now there’s a whole bunch of Jerruahs’ in the league.

  21. Defense is getting it done and those coaches were brought in. The offense of coaches are all former players and are failing. Go out and hire coaches and not former players if you want to win.

  22. Uhm, yeah, you can blame Garrett if you want but remember, he doesn’t have the final say on who his assistant coaches are.
In fact, he may have little say about it.
My take is Garrett is a figurehead and a major part of his job description is to be Jerrah’s punching bag.
He may get fired but I doubt it, especially if they win Thursday. Jerrah will calm down and remember he’s never had a better HC than Garrett, in terms of letting Jerrah be Jerrah.

  23. Jerry Jones, big man in town. Maybe you should fire the person that hired those coaches. Oh, I’m sorry, that would be you Jerry. Jerry Jones, the drama queen of the NFL!!

    ——————————-

    That was pretty funny.

  25. So Jerry finally has come to the same conclusion that the fans have had but 3 yrs late, this guy wasted 3 yrs waiting for his coach to get better and only did so after going to foxboro and losing like the last 21 teams that went to foxboro did. Jerry is his own worst enemy…

  26. Garrett is a class guy. Jerry wanted to punish the Pats and send a message his highly priced team with huge salaries is ready to take over and Garrett ruined the party.
Garrett should resign at the end of year no matter what happens. Love to see a winner coach tell the owner to pack sand. Just once. The lions may be in need.

  27. He’s right, but Jones’ method of delivering this message is 100% classless. He’s only doing it because he’s selfishly embarrassed at his organization. And of course, he would never admit whose fault it really is: his own. He’s like Dan Snyder, but loudmouthed.

  28. Don’t feel bad Dallas. My team is ran by Dan Snyder so it could be a whole lot worse. At least you have a talented roster and hope. The Skins have neither

  29. Yes…at Jerruh’s ultimate decision because one thing we know about Jerruh. It’s always all about Jerruh.

  30. Jerry, you had your Bill Belichick coach and you blew it, his name was Jimmy Johnson. The problem was that Jerry got uncomfortable when Jimmy got all the credit.

  31. “When you’re General Manager, which I am, those coaches are out there at my ultimate decision”

He’s not wrong. Of course ultimately his decision to publicly lambaste his coaching staff may hinder his ability to replace it with a better one. Given a choice, if the terms elsewhere were close to equal, who’d choose to work for Jerruh?

Wouldn’t you think Garrett is getting a little tired of the pressure Jerry puts on him?
    ————————-

What pressure? Garrett should thank his lucky stars every day that he is a head coach in the NFL.

  33. I’m no Bill Belichick fan, but give the man his due. He usually out coach’s everybody. Bill is not afraid to go against the flow in his decision making. He’s not afraid to take some chances. That’s what make him outstanding as a coach.

Garrett doesn’t like to take chances. He seems to be afraid. Garrett is far, far too conservative. To win, you may have to take some chances. Garrett simply won’t. In that way, he predictable. Sometime you have to be unpredictable, and do things that go against you nature.

  34. I’m sure Jerrah will have Garrett fire his assistant coaches and give Garrett a huge contract extension. It’s the Cowboys way!

  35. Greg Roman would be the best Head Coach for the Cowboys. He’s an innovative run game Coordinator, and is perfect for Dak’s skill set. Not too many coaches have a great understanding of O Line play, the running, game, and is a QB whisperer like G Ro. All he does is win football games.(when the front office stays outs oh his way) eh hmm..Buffalo, and Trent Baalke.

  36. Jerry Jones has every right to be pissed off. The way some of those guys played against NE I don’t blame him. Some played their asses off, and some let the others play their asses off. They know who they are. New England should have been an easy win. Some of the Cowboys played like they couldn’t wait to hit the sauna. Jerry should show this Cowboy version a copy of the Steelers 1978 and 1979 team film. Show them how a winner acts at all times, not just when the temp is 72 F. Also, when he bought the team, and used to sign free agents, none of them worked their asses off to let him know he made the right decision in selecting them. They used him for a sucker. My father would have kicked my ass if id have had that attitude. Belichick wins because he holds guys accountable, plain and simple. He grew up in the same era I did, and is grateful for every opportunity he ever got. That’s how it was in those days.

  37. Jerruh wants a SB win before he croaks that is not associated with Jimmy…

    The Clapper is done!

  38. I cannot understand for the life of me why Cowboy fans do not revolt. Stop buying tickets to games and watching them on TV until he hires a REAL GM. You all have been dealing with this guy for almost 20 years and have gotten nothing except a REALLY big stadium. The definition of a fool is someone who is doing the same thing over and over yet expecting a different result each time…. That=Cowboy Fans. Facts.

Jerry could star as Ebineezer Scrooge.

    Not a chance.
Ebenezer Scrooge saw the error of his ways, humbled himself, and spent the rest of his life selflessly doing for others.
The 77-year-old Jerry Jones is set in his ways, controlling, narcissistic, and closer to being a ghost than listening to, let alone being changed by one — or three.

Why didn’t Amari Cooper play in the game?
    ==========================================
I didn’t hear that question asked during the Garrett’s presser. Dallas media lame.

  41. Don’t worry Garrett, Elway and the committee will hire you right after the first of the year.

  42. Jerry ought to just move Garrett to Arkansas that way he can ensure his grandson is the starter for the razorbacks. Problem with Urban is he will steal Jerry’s spotlight just like Jimmy and Jerry cannot stand that, so expect never been head coach before Kris Richards to be the next head coach which could be as early as this Friday morning.

Jerry knows that he has his ace in the hole rested and waiting. Dave Campo is ready to step in for a 2nd stint as Cowboys HC if Jones jettisons Garrett.
    _____________________
Campo went 5-11 in each of the three years he was the HC of the Cowboys. He was let go and became the DC of the Browns. The Browns went 9-7 the year prior to Campo, 5-11 after he arrived. See a trend? Nobody has interviewed Campo to be a HC since he was one last- 17 years ago. Wonder why?

  45. Garrett is a good coach and has assembled a good staff. The problem is Jerry makes all the personnel decisions. Usually a coach and staff have at least some input on who will be on the team. Jones got lucky 25 – 30 years ago and had huge success. He took full responsibility for that. Now he only blames the coaches for not making guys – who they didn’t hire and the players know it – work hard. Jones is an idiot when it comes to football. He also got lucky to make his fortune.

  46. jones is responsible for picking the coach and anyone who says the jones have provided the talent to win confuses collecting talent with building a team. no matter how you slice it, the jones clowns have failed as gm.

    Your ultimate decisions should be:

Hire a coach, not a puppet.
    Stop meddling!
    =================================================================================
The same can be said for Snyder and the pathetic Redskins operation.

  49. SEEMS like TEN YEARS in the job should be more than enough to show if he can produce a winner. A good GM wouldn’t let it go that long before changing coaches….

  50. Jerry Jones needs to sit back and be a owner, not the gm to.the whole problem is and has been is jerry uses a retired quaterback as a coach, and now he has the young man in there as a quterback coach abd he never made it as a quaterback.BINGO thats the problem.the player dont respect a man that could not take the team to a playoff or championship so how can that same man coach the same team.like my grandparents use to say jerry has to many cheifs and not enough indians

  51. >>”SEEMS like TEN YEARS in the job should be more than enough to show if he can produce a winner. A good GM wouldn’t let it go that long before changing coaches”<<<
    ——————————————————–

And a good owner wouldn't let it go that long before changing GMs.

  52. Message to the Cowboys: please keep on doing whatever you’re doing right now…until at least my Buffalo Bills play you guys….

  53. Jason Garrett is Mike McCarthy 2.0. He won’t coach again, but for some reason he thinks he has an opportunity up in NY. You don’t Jason. You just don’t, okay?

    —————–

Thing is, McCarthy WILL coach again – Garrett, he’ll be an OC somewhere if canned. WHEN McCarthy takes over some hole-in-the-wall outfit, I certainly hope it isn’t in New York. The ONLY reason he specified the Jets as the only team he’d go to last season was solely because of the QB there. Oh yeah, McCarthy will be back with a vengeance.

  54. here’s another myth we keep hearing – that the cowboys were sucessful under parcells. they stunk – never won a single playoff game.

  55. Your players aren’t as good as the media says they are Jerry. 1 LBer in Smith, No DB’s and Witten is still playing when he shouldn’t be. The offensive line dropped off this year too.
