Packers claim Jared Veldheer off waivers

The Packers didn’t have right tackle Bryan Bulaga at practice on Wednesday, so they may need some help on the offensive line if his knee doesn’t heal enough for him to play in the upcoming weeks.

If they do have to look elsewhere, they may be able to call on veteran tackle Jared Veldheer. The NFL’s daily transaction wire brings word that the Packers have claimed Veldheer off of waivers on Wednesday.

Veldheer was on the reserve/retired list in New England after he decided this spring that his body was not up to the toll that an NFL season takes on a player. He is reportedly healthy, but hasn’t passed a physical yet. Assuming he does, the Packers will have to clear a spot on the 53-man roster for the veteran.

Veldheer started 12 games for the Broncos last year and was a teammate of current Packers right guard Billy Turner.

  1. Da Bears lost their right tackle, thought Veldheer might be a perfect replacement. Oh Crap, I am not as smart as Ryan Pace.

  2. Very smart move to bring him in to play next to a former teammate who he’s familiar with in Turner!

  3. @firejerry, I had the same thought. Why weren’t the Bears on this? Oh yeah their roster has no holes, just ask Pace.

  4. “Veldheer was on the reserve/retired list in New England after he decided this spring that his body was not up to the toll that an NFL season takes on a player.”

That’s alright, Veldheer. The team you’re going to isn’t really up to the toll an NFL season takes.

  5. Worth a shot. He’s been a quality player in the league. If he has anything left, perhaps he can hold the fort until Bulaga returns.

Bulaga isn’t even ruled out for Sunday yet, he won’t be missing much time. If Bulaga does sit against NY it will not be Veldheer who replaces him. Billy Turner or Alex Light would play RT if Bryan can’t go against the Giants.

Veldheer was not claimed off waivers with the thinking he will play Sunday. Veldheer has been out of football for 9 months and isn’t ready to play in this offense this week. He was claimed to provide depth late in the season and into the playoffs.

Having Bulaga out is huge! Not sure if this new guy Veldheer can “hold” without being called as well as the other guy. Bulaga has it down to a science.
True enough. The Packers line has long been known around the league as one of the best pass blocking lines, which is why Rodgers has been as efficient as he has been. And this is in no small part thanks to the stellar play of Bulaga. This year, they are not playing nearly as well, though their run blocking has been better (excluding last week).

I’m sure that’s not what you meant, but if you somehow think that the Packers linemen are the only ones who are working on holding pass rushers, you must not actually know anything about positional play on the oline.

  8. “Rodgers has been as efficient as he has been”…..seriously? An 84 million dollar QB is play way better than your 103 million dollar QB.HAHAHAHA
