AFC playoff picture: Meet the new boss

Getty Images

The six teams in playoff position in the AFC didn’t change in Week 13, but there’s a new team at the top.

The Patriots lost to the Texans on Sunday night, which pushes the Ravens into the No. 1 position with four games left to play in the regular season. Baltimore beat New England earlier this year, so the Patriots will need the Ravens to lose in order to have any hope of being the top seed in the conference.

Given the way the Ravens have been playing, that may not be a likely outcome. Here’s a look at how the entire playoff picture looks in the AFC:

LEADERS
1. Ravens (10-2) Eight straight wins and no sign of slowing down after beating the 49ers on Sunday.

2. Patriots (10-2) Some may wonder if the Patriots’ offense is a fatal flaw, but any final conclusions will wait until January.

3. Texans (8-4) A big win on Sunday night keeps the Texans on top of the AFC South.

4. Chiefs (8-4) A division title isn’t assured, but it isn’t in much doubt either.

5. Bills (9-3) They just keep winning, which makes this week’s date with the Ravens an interesting one.

6. Steelers (7-5) Mike Tomlin’s coach of the year case looks pretty good right now.

OUTSIDE LOOKING IN
7. Titans (7-5) They can all but eliminate the Raiders this week, but they may need help from others to make it to the postseason if they don’t sweep the Texans.

8. Raiders (6-6) They’ve been beaten by a combined score of 74-12 over the last two weeks, but they remain very much alive heading into Week 14.

9. Colts (6-6) Sunday’s loss to the Titans was a severe blow.

10. Browns (5-7) Freddie Kitchens may not have company when it comes to believing Pittsburgh started it, but everyone knows Pittsburgh ended the Browns’ playoff hopes on Sunday.

11. Jaguars (4-8) Nick Foles got benched and now we wait to see who gets fired in Jacksonville.

12. Broncos (4-8) Drew Lock‘s debut was a winner and the next four weeks will be about assessing the rookie’s fitness.

13. Chargers (4-8) We may be watching the clock run out on Philip Rivers‘s time with the Chargers.

14. Jets (4-8) A three-game winning streak feels like a distant memory after losing to the Bengals.

ELIMINATED

15. Dolphins (3-9) The Dolphins aren’t very good, but they keep fighting.

16. Bengals (1-11) Zac Taylor got his first NFL win, which is reason to celebrate unless you’re locked in on the first overall drat pick.

  2. If the Ravens are running a high school offense… teams should stop running middle school defenses.

  3. Mike Tomlin Coach of the Year?!!!
    Gimme a friggin break
Look at the Team directly above them and that will tell you who should be coach of the year.
No wonder the Bills never get any respect.

  4. The Titans still play the Texans twice. They control their destiny. Beat the Raiders and the Texans twice, they can lose to New Orleans and still win the division. Not saying that’s likely, but it’s the path they can control without needing help.

  5. No doubt the Ravens are doing very well but they way they write these stories make it sound like the blew the 49ers away.. not so. If the 9ers had made the field goal they would have won…… Pretty sure the outcome is going to be different if these two meet in the SB.

  6. Titans do not need any outside help..They can control the AFC South by beating the texans twice month

the owner went out and hired 2 former HC’s and put them on the payroll to do garrett’s

Brady just looks old out there. He doesn’t look like he’s having any fun at all.

    Nothing about him looks old

He still has his arm strength
He still moves in the pocket
He can still read the defense

This is more of the WR NOT named Edelman not getting open

They showed it over and aver again last night

  9. A couple observations. Other than the Ravens this conference is very weak. And Mike Tomlin isn’t the coach of the year. You would probably look at Payton in New Orleans (what that team has done so far this year with those injuries is crazy), Harbaugh in Bmore, Shanahan in San Fran, and McD in Buffalo. All of those guys should be ahead of Tomlin.

  10. It’ll be a shock to some but one of these days Brady is going to get benched. It isn’t fair to blame all the offensive woes on him but his play has been poor. Sony Michel MIA again, receivers MIA, play calling is very predictable. Not promising.

  11. I don’t blame the Pats for not wanting to have to face Baltimore in Foxboro again.

  12. Its a great time to be a Ravens fan. I’ve said it before, kudos to the club for reinventing themselves and rejuvenating the fans.

  13. Except for garbage time New England’s offense looked lost for multiple games now in a way I have never seen. Their record is surprising even with the top tier defense. Of course, all of New England’s success has come with a top tier defense.

  14. The Chiefs have the key formula which makes them dangerous every day of the week and that is they have a Quarterback who can go off and lite you up, He did it against the Ravens earlier in the season and made them ONE Dimensional which is passing where we saw Lamar struggle in that game to keep up.

I luv where the Chiefs are, AS much as the Chiefs defense can be a concern I’m even more concern about Andy Reid, if he gets out of Mahomes way… bad RUN defense or not they will trouble the scoreboard with great frequency and make you One Dimensional, where you are then force to pass the ball in order to keep up on the scoreboard, The Chiefs basically would like to bait you into a Shootout.

  15. Old man Brady? A dumpster fire at WR (double JE11) and you are fine. No TE play at all. And an O-line which look like the wall of Westeros after meeting the ice dragon. (Which mean no rungame and Brady got more harrassed than a young actress in Hollywood).
    But, yeah, he is old.

“Garbage time” such a stupid term

They scored 2 tds in the last 4 minutes and made it a one score game

If they recovered the onside kick and scored would you have said
    They “won in garbage time”?

    You play for 60 minutes

  18. “There’s a new sheriff in town… and his name is Lamar Jackson. Y’all be cool, right on.”

  19. Is that the new boss the Steelers took to OT without their franchise qb and should of beat? Okay, then! Any given Sunday! Stop the run, then you stop the ravens.

  20. Does everybody remember when Brady was the greatest because he made everybody around him better? But now he doesn’t have anybody to throw to. I’m confused, is he great because he makes others great. Or is he great because he plays with great players?

Brady is done. Forget WR getting open, he’s missing open targets when they do, he can’t evade the rush enough to make the throws he’s used to. If Buffalo happens to pull off the unthinkable and beat Baltimore in Buffalo on Sunday, you can probably pencil them in for the AFCE crown. They lost by a blocked punt in OP when the defense was lights out and Josh Allen was still finding his way. The defense has taken a step backwards, and Allen has taken 10 steps forward. Also, the Bengals could seriously give them a run for their money if they can’t find their footing on offense.

  21. The convincing Texans wins last night makes the Ravens win a little less impressive. Yeah they didn’t end up with a 17 point win. But that game last night was decided and the Pats put some cosmetics on it this time to lose by 6.

  22. Bills passed a big test on Thanksgiving….looking to see if they can pass another this Sunday vs the Ravens…
    ——-
Beating Dallas is suppose to mean something? What do the Jets get for beating Dallas?
Dallas hasn’t won a quality game all year.

  23. 5. Bills (9-3) They just keep winning, which makes this week’s date with the Ravens an interesting one.

If the Bills beat the Ravens on Sunday and the Pats lose to KC, who has more weapons on offense than Houston, then the Bills control their destiny for the #1 seed in the AFC. Who in the world would have thought this in September? You people can love to hate Josh Allen all you want, you can slight the Bills all you want, you can regurgitate the same old “the teams they have played though” argument if you want, but they just keep winning. 😉

  24. Dude don’t worry about it….. Coach of the year is a joke anyway. They gave it to

Even Bills fans should know COY means nothing. Dick Jauron won it for god’s sake.

  25. Brady may be recalculating the number of playing years remaining. After spending as much time as he did on the ground, playing till 47 must have a distant ring to it.

  26. “Garbage time” such a stupid term

Tell that to the Patriots offense then, who didn’t play the first 56 minutes of the game.

    **********
Lucky win? Yesterday both teams played smash mouth football in the middle of a torrential cold rain. But the better team won. Bosa??? Did he play yesterday????

  30. Why are the Pats so high in the rankings? Oh, that’s right…. just like the last decade they have an inflated record based on the weakest division in the NFL and the easiest regular season schedule every year guaranteeing home playoff games in the snow. That’s right— I remember now.

  31. Here in Chicago, the Bears weren’t playing on Sunday (they played on Thanksgiving Day), and the Vikings are playing on Monday night. I was thinking that surely the networks would let us see the Ravens/Niners game, which was one of the best and most important matchups of the year. Instead, we had to watch Green Bay blow out the Giants and Pittsburgh beat the self-defeating Browns. Why torture us like this? Nobody in Chicago wants to see the Packers/Giants when we could have been watching that great Ravens/Niners game. How stupid is that?

  32. Brady just looks old out there. He doesn’t look like he’s having any fun at all.

No, but they’re a talented team. They certainly gave the Pats all they could handle.

And that poster said they passed a big test, which they did. Down 7 in a road game, but more importantly, a major prime-time game that they don’t get to experience much. Allen had one of his best games, and the Bills did in general. For fans of the team, it WAS a 1st major test, to see how they would react – and they passed.

    Answer, no

What difference does it make what a totally different team did the last time they won there ? And how long ago was that?

  38. You can’t call Lamar a running back because running backs face a tougher gauntlet since when they get the ball everyone knows it’s a run. This is why it’s such an advantage for a QB like Jackson…..who runs like Adrian Peterson while picking and choosing what to do keeping defenders guessing while also having to worry about 15 yard penalties for touching him wrong/late.

  39. Browns

Lose out. Please don’t try to win out and just barely miss out on the playoffs like you did last year. Just take the high draft pick. No one will blame you.

Even if the Bills win out, the Pats still have common opponents tie breaker. The Bills need to have a better record than the Patriots or have the Patriots lose to Miami to get past them

That said, the Bills will be measured against the best in this last month. We play the 1 seed, the 2 seed and the steelers currently in 6th. If the Bills get some wins in this stretch, the top of the chart could look very different in a few weeks

Weakest Division in Football? Hardly – Check the standings….btw over the past 15 years the AFC East has the 5th best record out of division… hardly the weakest..but if that makes you guys feel better keep pumping the same tired excuse.

  43. Rodney Harrison disses the Ravens at every opportunity. I’m still trying to figure out what transpired in the past to him to offer an anti Raven sentiment at every opportunity.

  44. I’m a Bills fan through and through. But I am also a realist. I’m not overlooking ANYTHING at this point.

The Bills could be anywhere from 9-7 to 13-3 by the end of the season.

The Bills are playing pretty good football. But that schedule ahead is a bit of a murderer’s row.

The Ravens are playing “freakin’ amazing” – so losing to them is quite probable.
    – There are certain things I like about this home game, though – so it may be closer than some think.

The Steelers game is now a night game at their place. That turned a tough game tougher…
    – With the Bills D playing solidly though – the Bills have a decent chance against a rookie QB.

The Patriots at Foxborough… is historically a graveyard for Bills teams…
    – but… the Patriots of this year don’t look quite as daunting as years past. The Bills were a blocked punt and/or an injury away from winning at the beginning of the season. So who knows what’ll happen this time.

Finally – the Jets would like nothing better than to put a stake in the Bills’ playoff dreams…
    – then again – they lost to the Bengals; so…

To be completely honest though – I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Iron sharpens iron. If the Bills want to play playoff football this year – they’re going to have to win at least one tough game. If they win any more than one of the games above – they’ll have earned their ticket to the dance. Which only helps them in the long run.

    Go Bills!

  45. Mike Tomlin Coach of the year!!! Hahaha you are tripping, even when he isn’t on the field doing the same.

  46. 105 passing yards isn’t going to get it done in the playoffs for Baltimore. If they get behind by two scores in a playoff game, its over for them. KC is still the most dangerous AFC team.

I dont see it. I think they’d have to win out for that happen.

They have Balt@home, then Pitts and NE on the road. (and the Jets) even if they go 3-1, they end up 12-4

NE still has Cincy and Miami on the schedule. They will win those 2, so even if they lose to KC and Buffalo, they are 12-4.

I want to say that NE has the next tie breaker, which is common opponents. Someone correct me if I’m wrong on that.

  48. joker65 is probably right – the Bills feel like they’re still a year away. They need a big WR and a few other pieces.

But I’d give them a puncher’s chance this year. They’re young & getting better every week. They’re one of those teams you don’t want to face in the playoffs right now.

  49. Pats fans said Bill Belichick intentionally didn’t show his hand against the Ravens for the rematch. If this true what a terrible coaching blunder. Imagine not trying to win the game and losing home field advantage all to save a few extra looks on defense.

  55. Is anyone else annoyed with the Divisional Playoff seeding?
The Cowboys or Eagles are gonna be 8-8 most likely hosting a 13-3 Seahawks or 49ers team…it just ain’t right.

  56. The one thing I will say about the Ravens is they have to be commended for doing what they are doing against this schedule.

Wins against Seattle, Houston, New England, SF, LA. They also played the Chiefs.
With Buffalo on the schedule coming up, this has to be one of the toughest schedules in the NFL this year…. Has anyone else even come close to having 6 playoff teams on their schedule with one more in the hunt (LA)

  57. Tom Brady yesterday: 326 yards, 3TD.

    ================

No, I think it is right. If you can’t win your own division, you don’t deserve to host a playoff game. It gives meaning to division races. If the Seahawks can’t get past the 49ers (or vice versa), why do they deserve to be rewarded for it? If they’re the better team, they’ll win on the road.

To me, this creates drama, risk, and urgency. Consolation prizes will sap the drama from the end of the season. Why try to catch up and win the division when you have your home playoff game locked in?

I say, keep the playoffs as they are. Don’t expand the field, and don’t reward runners-up. This is crunch time. It should be punishing.

It’s a fair point. But you don’t wanna go on the road in the first round….? Win your division.

  61. How good is Buffalo btw? They have 9 wins but only one of those teams has a wining record and they played THAT team before they made a very successful QB shift. The combined record of the teams that Buffalo has beaten is 30-66. Every team they’ve played that currently has a winning record, they’ve lost.

This is like the opposite of the Ravens schedule. Look at the bottom of the power rankings and Buffalo has played all those teams. Cincy, NYG, Miami (2x), DC, NYJ, Denver…. Its a literal who’s who of the worst teams in the league.

I’m not putting Buffalo anywhere near a AFG CG yet. They win this weekend and we’ll talk. But they haven’t proven anything other than they can beat awful teams.

  62. The Bills do deserve some credit. 9-3 is 9-3. But I agree that they need to beat the Ravens or Pats to be considered a serious contender.

  63. Dont know why so many people hate on the Ravens. But this is a new day, and i really dont care. Go Ravens! Go Lamar Jackson!

  64. “Mike Tomlin’s coach of the year case looks pretty good right now.”

Sure, after all, he’s managed to get the team to the #6 seed!!

Could we please, please, please stop being stupid about the “Coach of the Year”?

Coaches who have done much more than Tomlin this year: John Harbaugh, Kyle Shanahan, Mike Zimmer, Bill Belichick, Pete Carroll, Sean Payton, …

The Steelers have lost to the Patriots, 49ers, and Seahawks. The Ravens have beaten all three. The Steelers have a grand total of one victory over a team with a winning record.

Do you think building the Ravens to the top of the NFL is easy to do?

It’s not like Tomlin has turned around a losing program that he took over from somebody else. He’s just mucking about in the middle of the standings like the Steelers have done consistently for the past few years.

  65. The Browns’ season highlight was 8 games ago and the Ravens haven’t lost since.Looks as if the Pats may have to travel to Baltimore and spoil the party like they did last year in KC.

He still has his arm strength
He still moves in the pocket
He can still read the defense

This is more of the WR NOT named Edelman not getting open

They showed it over and aver again last night

Except all we have heard for the last 20 years is how Brady can just take three guys out of the stands and turn them into All-Pro WRs. So which is it?

Can he turn nobodies into all -pros or does he need real WRs in order to play well?

Actually it’s both, when he was YOUNGER, he could turn nobodies in to All-Pros. But now that he has gotten OLDER he needs WRs with some real talent.

Ergo, he is aging like we all do and can no longer do what he did before. And this is the first time since this dynasty started that BB has not recognized a flaw and addressed it.

Check that…Bill tried to address it last year but Tammy cried to Daddy Kraft and so Daddy sent Jimmy G to the 9ers.

Bills passed a big test on Thanksgiving….looking to see if they can pass another this Sunday vs the Ravens…

    WHAT?
What big test? My cowboys havent beat a team over .500 all season. Please this wasn’t a big test, it was a warm up for your ravens game. sad to say but its reality my boys sucks.

The Bills do deserve some credit. 9-3 is 9-3. But I agree that they need to beat the Ravens or Pats to be considered a serious contender.

Lets put it this way… are they better than the 8-4 Texans, Vikings or Chiefs… Are they better than even the 7-5 Titans…. and yes I know they beat the Titans… before the QB switch. I’m not sure they win that game now.

  71. Until the Pats are officially knocked out of the play off, and Tom Brady realizes he is almost retired. You can put any team in the title you want, but it all means nothing until the top dog is finally put to bed.
