Gardner Minshew to start for Jaguars this week

Minshew Mania is back.

Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone announced on Monday that Minshew will start at quarterback against the Chargers in Week 14.

The move comes a day after Minshew replaced Nick Foles during a 28-11 loss to the Buccaneers. Marrone declined to discuss his quarterback plans for this week after the game, but three lopsided losses in three games since Foles returned did little to make the case for staying the course.

Minshew was 16-of-27 for 147 yards, a touchdown and an interception against Tampa. He started eight games while Foles was out with a broken collarbone and helped the team to a 4-4 record in those contests.

Foles signed a four-year, $88 million contract with the Jags this offseason. His future with the organization will be a big topic for the offseason, although there are questions to answer about the futures of Marrone and the other football decision-makers before any moves will be made at quarterback.

  1. I was in the stadium yesterday and Gardner lifted every ones spirits on and off the field as soon as he walked out there.

  2. Mineshew ,Fournette and chark and a few other on D are the only ones worth keeping tear it down Kahn

  3. Foles plays 10 quarters of football this year and Marrone is convinced he’s not their QB…great decision-making.

  4. Fair enough. Foles had his chance to at least not suck and he would’ve held the job. I guess Jags can see what Minshew can do so they have a good idea of their QB room heading into the offseason. No playoffs this year anyway so see what ya got for the future.

  5. This must be a mistake. The mighty Nick Foles can throw a football over the Grand Canyon. He built all of the stadiums in America with his bare hands, including Wrigley field which he constructed 75 years before being born.

  6. I like Minshew, I like Foles, but this is how bad teams stay bad. And why so many QBs look better on better-run teams.

This kind of wishy-washiness is a great way to stunt your team’s development.

  7. At this point, it is not even close. Minshew is clearly the better option.

Foles has had no zip on his pass and seems to be struggling to get it more than 5-10 yards downfield. It seems that he is still injured. Which is an indictment on the Jaguars for having him out there the past three games when he was obviously the inferior QB.

  8. I think with any player and especially a QB taking previous success and trying to replicate it with another team is a bit of a crap shoot. Foles had already shown his skills were not transferable so 88 million later and there they are…

  9. The Jags can not win their division. If the Texans lose and the jags win out, they will both be 8-8 the texans will have a better divisional record. So it only makes sense to play the kid to see if you want him or want to trade him. Foles or Minshew will not be in Jacksonville next year.

  10. I’ve always wondered why teams sign Free Agent QB’s for so much money when they are essentially bidding against themselves or just a few other teams. The Jags didn’t need to give Foles 88 milion guaranteed for a second chance starting job. Why not give him 10 mil for one year on a prove it deal with the opening day starting position guaranteed and see what happens? Will this happen next year with Tannehill? Are either of them better than Fitzmagic? At that level, why not just draft and sign a few mid tier QBs and see if one hits a la Dak Prescott or Gardner Minshew?

    Crazy…

  11. Not a fan of the Jags so I don’t know but what happened to that once great defense? If the defense were still top level either of those qb’s would be good enough to win.

  12. Forget about Marrone as a HC. This is about Foles and everyone – media and armchair GMs – ignoring his record as a starter and thinking he is a 16+ game starter. Kinda need to stop anointing people.

  13. The offense doesn’t work with Foles bc they can’t protect him. He’s a statue.. the HAVE to have a scrambling QB. Also.. if a QB is gonna be a statue, I that’s fine, but the passes have to be on time, and accurate. Foles has not been accurate. It is what it is. Minshew is the better fit, and likely the better QB. Foles is the better ‘leader’ I guess.. but those sideline pep talks only go so far when you yourself are playing like crap.

Fire Marrone! He’s a bum!! He walked out on his last team.

He didnt even walk out on them….he texted them from home…..Stick with The STASH!!!

  15. Minshew is going to make a LOT of money over the next decade as a reliable back-up. When Minshew is your starting QB however, your team is always going to fall short.

6th round QB’s hit once about every 25 years…..and Brady was drafted in 2000.

This is why the FO has to go. Pass on Mahomes, Watson and Jackson to pay Bortles and Foles. Complete ineptitude. Even the most terrible armchair GMs would have made better decisions there…

Ok now that’s the greatest Monday morning quarterbacking I think I’ve ever heard in my life. If you were loving Mahomes, Watson, and Lamar Jackson before the draft, you’re in rare company. I’m not saying it’s impossible but geez. Many of the experts thought Andy Reid was nuts for trading up to get Mahomes. Most people thought Lamar Jackson was a wide receiver. Not everyone was in love with Deshawn Watson either. I don’t know what armchair GM’s you’re talking about, but I certainly didn’t hear from them. If you hit on all three, you should be running a team. Look at it like this. They hit on Minshew in the 6th round. A good QB can wipe away a lot of sins.

    ————————————
10 quarters? he was 0-4 as a starter. The Jags made a huge mistake in signing him. The only time he has ever been good was in the Eagles system.

  19. Four and four as a started is cause for celebration?

    better than zero and four

  20. Coughlin and Marrone extended Bortles, then signed Foles to huge contract. What confidence do Jags have in their decision making about quarterbacks ? Time for a change at the top and get rid of both.
