Seahawks win fifth in a row while Kirk Cousins falls to 0-8 on Monday night

No team does drama better than the Seahawks. No one does Monday Night Football worse than Kirk Cousins.

For the 10th time in 12 games, the Seahawks were in a tight game that came down to the end. They stopped the Vikings on fourth down with 2:27 remaining before kicking a field goal and then recovering a fumble on the ensuing kickoff.

The Seahawks beat the Vikings 37-30 in an entertaining game.

It was the Seahawks’ fifth consecutive victory and gives them a 10-2 record. They are tied with the 49ers atop the NFC West, but own the head-to-head tiebreaker with the teams scheduled to play again in Week 17 for what might be for the division crown.

Russell Wilson improved to 9-2 in his career on Monday Night Football, and the Seahawks now are 26-10 all-time on Monday night. That gives Seattle the best winning percentage on Monday night in NFL history.

The Vikings fell out of a first-place tie with Packers atop the NFC North, dropping to 8-4. Cousins’ record on Monday Night Football fell to 0-8.

The Seahawks gained 444 yards, with 218 coming on the ground. It was the most rushing yards the Vikings have allowed since last year on Monday Night Football when Seattle ran for 214 against them.

Chris Carson ran for 102 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries and Rashaad Penny added 74 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

Wilson completed 21 of 31 passes for 240 yards and a touchdown but also threw a pick-six.

Cousins was 22-of-38 for 276 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He was missing plenty of parts with running back Dalvin Cook leaving in the third quarter with a shoulder injury and left tackle Riley Reiff departing with a concussion late in the first half.

The Vikings already were playing without receiver Adam Thielen.

Still, the Vikings tried to rally after falling behind 34-17 in the fourth quarter.

Laquon Treadwell caught a 58-yard pass from Cousins with 12:49 remaining, and then, after Xavier Rhodes forced and recovered a fumble by DK Metcalf, Cousins found Kyle Rudolph for a 3-yard score with 7:14 left. Dan Bailey missed the final extra point.

The Vikings got a chance for the comeback, but they reached only their own 42. On third-and-three and fourth-and-three, Cousins threw incompletions.

The Vikings never saw the ball again.

  1. 0-8. Kirk Cousins just isn’t good enough.

The whole world knows it. Plus, that Vikings defense looks terrible. They could very well win 2-3 more games this year, but none of those will be playoff wins.

  2. What a fun game to watch for us Packers fans. The NFCW is good. This game didn’t remind me of our 49er game at all.

  3. Pete Carroll owns Mike Zimmer. Cousins did not cost the Vikings this game. Who didn’t know that Seattle was going to run a fake punt, other than Zimmer? Zimmer is too conservative.

  4. Nobody believes in your QB and he never wins on Monday Night. You should have saved the environment and forfeited. You wasted a lot of jet fuel. I bet that Norwegian kid is mad at you.

  5. Good grief……Seattle can’t for the life of them…win a game going away. That was a bumbled mess victory once again. But……we are ahead of the Clara 69ers and in 1st place!!

  6. I knew Cousins was horrible but 0-8 on Monday night?

Wow, what a sad weekend of football for the purples.

  7. As a packer fan, GB and MIN both do not have what it takes to makes a deep playoff run this year. Both teams are struggling vs quality teams.

  8. And the reward for beating the Vikings in a great, great game tonight? Six days later we get to play the Rams in LA, who just demolished the Card’s on Sunday. Oh, my.

  9. 10-2. All alone in 1st place. Take a good look at the back end of the Seahawks, 49ers fans, because that’s the last part of us you’re gonna see this year.

Remember when the Seahawks got rid of Sherman, Thomas, Bennett, Baldwin, Jimmy Graham, Paul Richardson, Sheldon Richardson and Frank Clark and you all said they’d be the worst team in football? Yeah. They’re 20-8 since then, and 16-3 in their last 19 games.

    Be afraid, Seahawk haters.

    Be very afraid.

  10. Not a fan of either team, but I wouldn’t put this on Cousins. The pick six was just a great play by the defender (and hit Diggs right in the hands). Seattle just outplayed them, but Cousins had a solid game, especially when you take into account how many key players he was missing.

  11. Hard fought game.Cousins may be 0-8 as the record says he is, but he didn’t give up nearly 400 yards on defense, miss an Extra Point attempt that turned the last drive into needing a TD.
He also was without Thielen and Cook went out most of the second half and STILL rallied from 17-0 in the second hardess place to play in the league behind K.C.

    Look foward. #SKOL

  12. What’s crazy is everyone seems to miss that the Seattle player recovering the fumble was never touched down. The only contact was by his own teammates. He then runs backwards and throws the ball away near the endzone. At best, it should have been Seattle’s ball inside their OWN 5 yard line, but if that ball on his throw goes through the endzone, it should have been ruled a safety, and Seattle never gets their following field goal.

  13. Be afraid, Seahawk haters.

    Be very afraid.

New Orleans idn’t get the memo in week 3.

  14. Vikings get away with a lot of holding. The refs did their best to keep this one close.

2 games back of the Packers with 4 to go!

  15. Who had a top run defense before tonight?? Yeah…….well Seattle has a run game. They gave up 14 points on a volleyball play from Wilson and a blown coverage TD……but it didn’t matter because their offense is a brutal force.

  16. Seattle lost to New Orleans at home already in week 3.

They lose by at least 20 in NFC Championship in New Orleans.

  17. Happy to see MN lose, but they do look better than the Packers right now. And the 49ers look better than the Seahawks. Doesn’t matter, though. You might as well be disappointed now, you knew it was inevitable.

  18. So much holding by the Seahawks all line, but it was nice to see lucky the refs let the game players play the game. In the end, the Vikings defense did not do enough to help win this game. Good job Seahawks.

  19. So much holding by the Seahawks O-line, but it was nice to see the referees let the players play the game on both sides. In the end, the Vikes defense failed. Nice game Seahawks.

  20. Vikings d lost that game not Kirk. Every 3rd down felt like 3rd & 1 for the Seahawks. Every first down they gained at least 5. Kick put up 21 on a good d. Cant ask for more. Missed extra point put them in a bind

  21. Defense gives up 34 points. Rhodes can’t cover ANYONE. Injuries galore on both sides of the ball. Special teams miscues, and two Cook fumbles. But tell me more about how Kirk Cousins lost another MNF game while carrying the team on his back. SMDH.

  22. Kirk played great tonight. I’ve been one of his biggest critics since we signed him. You can see this dude is understanding his offense and knowing his players. 2/4 of his picks this season were the result of Diggs dropping a ball that hit both hands/face. He brought us back vs Broncos down by 20 and won and he almost pulled it off tonight down by 17 on the road to the Seahawks. We were missing Theilen, Cook fumbles and goes out, LT Reiff goes out with concussion, Diggs hurts ankle…Kirk put up 30 still. Our secondary is a much bigger concern to me. Four 1st round picks and a 2nd rounder along with a coach known as the DB whisperer and they give up more plays than Fred Smoot vs Steve Smith.

  23. Seattle just won their SB. Fireworks and all. Dynasty number 2 in the books.

Oh, wait… How may rings make a dynasty?

Bwahahahahaha!!! Probably have to wait till the niners win again before we here from nutballnewton!!!

  26. Hey Pete it’s first and goal from the 3 yard line with the Superbowl on the line, and you have the best running back in football standing in your backfield. What’s the play call gonna be Pete? Oh I know throw it…Wahahahahaha…That’s gonna go down as THE worst play call ever in Superbowl history. All so that you could try and get your quarterback the Superbowl MVP award…Dumbest call ever

  27. As a Vikings fan, I don’t want this team to make the playoffs. It would be meaningless, as you know they would be immediately booted out. This team simply is lacking a true leader, both in coaching and on both sides of the ball. No killer instinct. No vocal leader with an edge to him. Just a very “blah” team right now. No quality wins. This was the first good opponent they faced all season and they failed again.

  28. Well, not the result the Purple wanted, but at least we showed better than other NFC North teams playing in the West Coast on primetime.

Half of Kirk Cousins interceptions have bounced off of Stephon Diggs hands this year. 3 passes of his bounced off of Diggs hands in this game alone.

Vikings had an uncharacteristic 3 turnovers today.

They’ll bounce back, just like they did from the disaster which was the 3rd Quarter.

  29. Have fun tonight Packer fans. This just might be the best thing in the world for Minnesota! The Vikings will Plaster you at home, then prove you to be the frauds you are when They go into your home field and cause your fans to go home crying in their beers AGAIN….
Chuckle as you will, when you know the Vikings went in with 9 injured starters and without their best receiver. And then made it closer than it should have been. This is only a speed bump.

  30. Tastes sweet when even Vikings homer Florio starts by giving excuses to the Vikings before the fans even do.

Seattle lost to New Orleans at home already in week 3.

They lose by at least 20 in NFC Championship in New Orleans.

    **************************************
A bold prediction! On the one hand, we lost against Baltimore because they simply whooped our butts. On the other hand, we lost against New Orleans because we made a lot of stupid mistakes in that game.

We’re not going to make the same mistakes against the Saints should there be a rematch.

  32. Cousins found again a way not to win. Trailing by 4, with plenty of time, pass deflected on third and 3. And, on fourth and 3, he forced the ball to a fully covered receiver, with no imminent pressure in the pocket.
The positive thing is that he didn’t choke until that crucial drive.

  33. Before tonight the Vikings only gave up 36 first-downs all year.

The Vikings gave up 16 first downs to the Seahawks tonight.

    Think about that.

Carson and Penny are so good because Penney has a different gear and if they are used to Carson’s speed and power, Penny runs away from their angles…he is a step or two faster but still big and strong so it is deceptive.

Did you see Carson run that guy over at the end to ice it? Reminds me of Marshawn. Those DBs are tired of getting blasted by the 4th quarter.

That was the playoff formula. Bruising, groundgame dominating, time of possession winning.

If you want to beat guys like Lamar and Mahomes(and Russell) you gotta keep them off the field.

I now move my concern and worry to the Rams…one week at a time. As far as I am concerned the playoffs started tonight. Figure the Seahawks see it the same way.

I don’t even hear crying Niner fans we will see you week 17.

  34. Close game. Seattle is a tough place to play. Happy to see all the meat packer comments. Means the Vikings are still living rent free in thier underdeveloped minds.

  35. …but also threw a pick-six… yes, but you might need to clarify a double tipped ball at the line of scrimmage being the pick 6. Not like he threw into the flat and didn’t see the coverage.

  36. You’re wrong Nostradamus. He is clearly down by contact with Opponent feet entanglement, as he gets possession.

Great game Vikings. You’re a quality team and this was hard fought. Glad you didn’t roll over and give up after getting down by 17. Don’t want all the “experts” saying how great the Seahawks are & they start believing all the press. All that would do is let them not focus & mess up next week in LA.

    Go Hawks!

  37. SF needs to beat New Orleans next week. That way, if Seahawks keep pace, the week 17 game between them and SF will likely be for 1st in NFC. The road to SB will go thru NFC West Division Champion. That would be awesome.

  38. The Vikings defense is the problem. Zimm, the defense and you are starting to look way past your expiration date.

56 fell on top of him at 26 yard line, the whistles blew the play dead… he then got up and celebrated… literally some of the Viking fans all they do is complain about officiating when its 10000000000% right…. and in cases like several others, it makes you guys look EXTREMELY silly, and next to impossible for anyone to take you serious, because it appears you don’t know what your talking about AT ALL.

  40. Going into his 10 Monday night losses, has Kirk ever been on a team that had the better record?

Last night’s loss wasn’t on him.

His one int was a drop that bounced into db’s hands.

  41. Didn’t see the game but love all the idiots (including Florio) again trotting out the “kirk Cousins cant win big games” Narrative.

Did he miss the extra point? Did he give up 444 yards on defense? Did he fail to stop the run? Did he hurt Dalvin Cooks Shoulder? Is he the Only QB to lose In Seattle on Monday night to the team with the QB with the best winning percentage on MNF in history?

No. But the loss is all Cousins fault…

  43. As much as I would have loved for the outcome to be different, it was a good game to watch. It was nice to see Cousins play with some fire on the road, under the lights. And as someone who never wanted to see him on the Vikings to begin with, I’ve been very pleasantly surprised with how he’s played lately. This loss is definitely not on him at all.

Actually the Vikings defense gave up 218 yards on the ground and a total of 444 yds YIKES!!!!

  45. Parcels was adamant, you are what your record says you are. But the Seahawks are one of the most shaky 10-2 teams I can remember seeing. This game, for example, they had a convincing, curb-stomping victory in their grasp in the 3rd qtr, then took their foot off the throat and let the Vikings back into the game. It’s like they quit paying attention and just take it too nonchalant.

Or another way to look at it is with a question. Do they look like the same caliber team as the Saints, 49ers, Ravens?

Yeah, that’s what I think too.

  46. Bob….agree with what you said about the Seahawks but I wouldn’t bet against them. They just seem to find a way to win so many close ones. Carroll has a knack for doing something at a key point in the game to give is team an edge and boost.

  47. Sure, Cousins is 0-8 as a starting QB on MNF. But, this loss was far more on the (lack of) defense. Can people stop with calling Zimmer a defensive guru? This defense lacks discipline, does not seem to make very good in game adjustments, and constantly gets killed on similar plays (especially giving up huge yardage on screens every game). Opposing receivers are wide open at least 4-5 times or more per game.

If you’re going to insult an entire fanbases’ intelligence, you should make sure you’re spelling is right.

And of course Packer fans were thinking about this game. It was almost as big for us as it was for the Vikes.

  50. When you turn the ball over twice to allow the Seahawks to score 10 points is not going to win you games….

  51. I recognize this website has an agenda to bash Kirk Cousins whenever there’s an opportunity…..but he didn’t lose that game. The defense did. Even Cousin’s lone INT bounced off of Diggs hands. Just like his last INT 6 weeks ago….that one went off of Diggs face mask.

  52. Cousins played well enough to win. The interception Was not his fault. Drops by receivers. Inopportune penalties Once again, someone in the media doesn’t know anything about football so they have to make it about one position. The quarterback position is the Overhyped position in all of sports.

  53. Cousins had decent stats, but when it counted in the 4th quarter he threw behind receivers, threw in the dirt, and over threw guys. The MN defense did get railroaded, but they scored 6 and came up with a timely fumble when the Hawks were looking to score again – that’s plus 9 points on the board.

  54. The ignorance continues. Cousins did more than his share to help the Vikings win, but the defense let them down.

That’s been the reason for almost all of the losses Cousins has been a part of on Monday night. His lousy Redskins and now the Vikings defenses don’t show up. You can’t expect a QB with no running game support and a sieve for a defense to get enough points to win those games. Brady couldn’t do it, Rodgers couldn’t do it.

0-8. Kirk Cousins just isn’t good enough.”

    _________________

Please. He’s thrown for over 3,000 yards, has 23 TD’s to 4 Int’s, and a rating of 97. He is easily a top ten QB in this league.

So he’s not Brady, Rodgers, Mahomes, etc. – fair enough. But QB play is not the problem with the Vikings.

  56. Anyone who counts out the vikes doesnt know or see this team enough.Twice in two weeks they exploded to cstchup quickly. Takes a well coached disciplined team to shift gears that fast.no one will want to face them in the playoffs.

  57. Framing the story around Cousins’ record isn’t really fair at this point. He and the offense scored enough, it’s the defense that let them down.

The Seahawks kind of remind me of those Coughlin/Manning Giants teams – lots of dubious play throughout the season, but things fall their way when it counts. They and the Ravens seem to be on a similar trajectory, with a “how is this actually working this well?” vibe as they blast their way through the season in unlikely ways.

  58. Cousins didn’t give up 37 points. He did enough to win.

You were saying about Kirk Cousins?

    ———-
His team lost and Jackson’s won. Any other questions?

  61. it was never kirk’s fault, even with the skins. it was always the defense, the o line, the run game, the receivers. no matter where kirk goes he is just good enough to convince people to throw the rest of the team under the bus. i know because i was a huge kirk defender with washington. the fact of the matter is he cant match other high octane offenses when it matters most. put him against rodgers, wilson, jackson, mahomes, and he will NEVER score as many points. in today’s NFL that is not good enough.

i scoffed when people called him a journeyman. but he really is just alex smith with a better arm and worse ball security. he’s the definition of journeyman and last nights game only builds on that narrative.

Kirk Cousins simply cannot allow 400-plus yards on defense and expect to be considered an elite quarterback

    ———

He also can’t toss two atrocious incompletions on 3rd and 4th down with the game in the line at the end of the 4th quarter. But he did

  63. Not a single penalty on the Hawks the whole game outside of the one where Flowers ran into Diggs.

The flag on Rhodes was ridiculous and led directly to a score. The non-call on Flowers when he interfered with Diggs and intercepted was ridiculous and led to a score.

The Vikings were terrible against the run throughout the whole game but on a play where they fumbled and saw both Cook and Diggs laying on the turf it’s remarkable they still fought back to have a chance late.

Clete Bakeman and his crew are outrageously bad and there are too many games turning on bad calls this year. Additionally, that NY could see the flowers INT and not overturn boggles the mind, especially when you compare that how they took a score off the board in the Vikings vs. the Packers at Lambeau that had the whole football watching world asking wth just happened.

Also what is ABC/ESPN doing to MNF? The same crew is back again this year as some kind of sick joke. Seeing Boomer and TJ at halftime was like being given water while in the desert for weeks. Who in charge over there thinks they know what they are doing?

  64. Hey Seahawks do not get too comfortable up there you will not last
the luck will run out.It is funny how you were hiding all season
long till now you face the 49ers with all their receivers and tight end playing
you will get blown out…. week 17 in seattle

When did this situation happen? The Bowl I watched it was 2nd down, and the ball was inside the 1.

  69. Our defense is very bad. Zimmer doesn’t seem to have any answers. Too often this year, they give up a flurry of points in a single quarter to put the team in a gigantic hole (packers, Bears, Broncos, Seahawks, Cowboys, Chiefs) that’s too difficult to climb out of.

Ever since the Saints playoff game in the 2nd half, Zimmer’s defense has been atrocious. Rhodes’ decline also started in that game, as well as his antics and whining. We may have won that game but it was the start of the very fast plummet of this defenses ability. I don’t care what “stats” say in this regard. Sure, maybe the stats say the defense is still a top defense. BS! this defense is horrendous and can’t stop anybody when it counts. Rhodes is the worst defender in the league for penalites and the worst corner in the league in terms of coverage. it’s like having 10 people on the field when he’s out there. Smith has lost many steps and can’t cover anything. Joseph has lost his edge and is either not healed from the injury or just is on his career decline.

I don’t want this team to make the playoffs. What’s the point? They are going to be destroyed in the wild card round. This team was assembled to win a superbowl, not just get to the playoffs.

These players and coaches have no edge. no attitude. No real leaders. No killer instinct. Just a very BLAH football team that is easily forgettable.
