Tom Brady on wide receivers: Guys are doing the best they can

Getty Images

Sunday night was another rough outing for the Patriots offense as two late touchdowns put a cosmetic spin on a 28-22 loss to the Texans that wasn’t nearly as close as the score might indicate.

New England has had issues across the board on the offensive side of the ball, but the makeup of their receiving corps has been a frequent talking point when discussing the unit’s struggles this season. Quarterback Tom Brady has been among those airing his frustrations about the team’s play this season, but he didn’t air out his teammates during a Monday appearance on WEEI.

Brady looked upset on the sideline during Sunday’s loss, but said he has “no problem” with a receiver group featuring two rookies and the recently acquired Mohamed Sanu lining up alongside Julian Edelman and Phillip Dorsett.

“There’s some good effort out there,” Brady said. “Guys are doing the best they can do in my belief. We’re working hard and trying to do the right thing, and sometimes it’s been good. Other times, we obviously still have work we still have to do. That is just part of playing football. Sometimes people have it figured out early and some people, we’re trying to figure it out as we go. That’s just part of it. That is just part of what we’re dealing with.”

Brady said that he’s well aware of the high expectations for the Patriots, “but at the same time I think there are realistic expectations with our circumstances incorporating different elements” as the season plays out. Should the Patriots lose to the Chiefs next weekend, the expectations in New England will shift again.

  1. It’s hard to fault the Pats management because they’ve been so successful, but it just feels like they could have used some of that cap room they have to help out Brady and the offense.

  2. This is why you should laugh when people suggest Edelman is a hall of famer. If he was truly a hall of famer, then this offense would have no problems. Guys like Sanu and Dorsett would be plenty good playing next to a hall of famer.

The falcons had a top offense with Sanu and Taylor Gabriel playing with Julio Jones. The difference is that Julio is a true #1 and hall of famer but Edelman is just a good slot WR, a role player.

Edelman is Wayne Chrebet on a good team.

  3. Sorry, Tom.

The jig is up. Your own former coordinator rope-a-doped you all night because he knows you only want to look at Edelman on every dropback.

When you did target someone else, your throws were off the mark, usually high. It’s 14 point swing if you hit a wide open Dorsett and don’t throw the horrible INT to Roby, of all people, a Broncos cast off.

    Just pathetic.

YOU need to pick it up, Tom. No more boo-boos on the elbow or other crap. You and McDaniels have been awful all year with the gameplanning and gamecalling as the game goes. Absolutely horrible.

  4. The Patriots always figure it out that’s been their M.O for years, but at the same time there are some questions this year that the guys who are catching it might not be able to rise to the level the Pats are accustomed too. A ton of drops by EVERYONE have led to Brady’s continuing angst, and with the playoffs right around the corner, and the Pats now having to travel if Baltimore wins out, that means they’ll have to be at the top of their game come playoff time. Will that happen? Only time will tell

This is one of the dumbest comments I’ve ever seen. Edelman was predictably doubled all game and he still produced. Get it?

The offense has no flow or synergy because Brady won’t lead the the offense. He’s fixated on who will make him look good, so he doesn’t even look or engage other WRs. It’s been going on for years, really, since 2007. By the end of 2007, the other weapons were all ignored for over-use of Moss/Welker, which is why NE lost SB 42. This is the same thing, just another manifestation of the problem.

They have the 2nd best WR group in the conference from 1-5. KC has the best WR group and I’d say NE is 2nd, with Houston probably in the top 5 as well.

It’s absolutely preposterous. The Houston red zone D is 32nd in the league. Dead last. And this is the Pats offense?

White, Burkhead should be out into the flat all night long burning their crappy LBs for scores.

Can’t blame Newhouse anymore, Brady Fanboys.

In what way? A top 3 OL, a top 3 WR group in the conference and the best RB group in the league.

What on earth are you looking at? There’s always some built-in excuse when Brady openly pouts in passive-aggressive fashion in situations like these.

If the media and fanboys would just not be so pathetically homerish when analyzing awful Brady right now and be fair, this awkward exchanges could be avoided.

6 weeks ago it was “NE is a lock for the SB with the Sanu trade”, and now with Brady and McDaniels being absolutely awful together, somehow it’s the personnel again just like last year, huh?

I don’t think so, just like I knew it wasn’t last year.

I was thinking the same thing last night. Last night was a night that Wes Welker would have been targeted 15 times and caught 12 balls for 135 yards and we’d won by 10 or more. Edelman “IS CLUTCH” but he’s not a great player that can carry an entire offense. Wes was ALWAYS Open. You couldn’t cover him.

But N’Keal Harry’s effort on the slant was piss poor. He gave up and didn’t fight through it. The guy who effectively ran this slant was Josh Gordon. He would get his big frame in front of the DB know matter what. Even if it was incomplete the defender was posted up and could not get to the ball.

  10. That’s some pretty lame faint praise from ‘ol Tom.

PAUL SOUSA: Spot on about Gordon. Still can’t understand why he was shipped out unless the demons made a reappearance or were back at the doorstep.

  11. TB has every right to be pissed. Year after year he takes a below market (for the GOAT) salary so that NE will have more cap space for other players, especially WR’s, and this is the best BB can do?

There’s only one way NE gets to the SB this year and that is if TB and BB can convince Mr. Kraft to allow them to sign AB. Without a legitimate down field threat like AB the Pats are one and done in the playoffs.

  12. You’re comparing Welker to Edeleman production? Brady was 30-35 throwing to Welker, he’s 42 throwing to Edelman now. Not enough targets? Edelman caught 8 balls just last week. He’s on pace to have record highs this year. Do people read their posts before hitting send?

He was blanketed/covered like glue! Why is Brady throwing it to him when he’s clearly covered?

You’re the exact Brady fanboy I am talking about here. It was like when he telegrapged the Pikc 6 to Alford from Atlanta when he stared down Amendola in SB 51. If yor 1st read is covered, go to the next one.

I just read NE’s OL had their second best pass protection games of the season vs the 32nd ranked red zone D.

Translation? Brady sucked. And, then when he didn’t suck, his high or LATE throws have the receivers pressing and having some drops as well.

This is not new with Brady. He helps gameplan, he chooses the plays McDaniels feeds into him, he has full autonomy.

It starts and ends with him. You can’t be taking on praise of the GOAT all the time and basking in the limelight and then turn around and not be held accountable.

He mentally looks checked out to me, which is why BB drafted JimmyG after 2013 and why he has Stidham in there right now.

Brady thinks BB won’t cut the cord on him or McDaniels, but I think he would if he felt it would help the offense. It won’t happen this year, but boy oh boy is Brady really ruining this season at the moment with buddy McDaniels.

This has to be a joke. Is this the same Welker that vanished in the postseason because teams knew Brady would only throw to binkies back then, as he’s doing now?

Hint: When Brady includes all targets and runs the offense well, he’s a good/great QB. When he doesn’t do this, he’s predictable and crappy.

  15. If the Patriots lose to the Chiefs and somehow the Bills pull off a win against the Ravens I think the Patriots are toast. If The Patriots fall out of the top 2 seeds or God forbid go into the playoffs as a wild card they are done. Home field advantage and skipping that extra Wild Card game is what has kept them in the Super Bowl for years.

  16. It’s very enjoyable watching the fanboys eat their own over a loss. Come on fanboys you started with a cake schedule and read you press clippings so reality really applies to all fanboys. Runnin QBs will always give Bb fits so just hope the Ravens stumble so you don’t get embarrassed again….cant wait.

  17. Brady just needs to manage the game and not turn the ball over. The Patriots will be fine. The defense and special teams will carry this team. Like in the Ravens game, Belichick didn’t want to show all cards against the Texans. Things will look different in the playoffs.

  18. Wait….hearing all the Patriots Kool-Aid drinkers on here talk about how brilliant BB is and how every move he makes is the best move ever sure is delusional. That offense is a hot mess. The offensive line is a shambles and the WRs are poor. Make no mistake, I can’t stand the Patriots but to blame it all on Brady is ridiculous. He has nothing. It’s pretty hard for a QB to do anything when his receivers are garbage and the OL can’t block Betty White. They have some serious personnel issues on the offensive side of the ball. If they don’t address that next year they’re going to get Brady injured.

I loved that game yesterday. It’s great when the Pats lose.

I’ll never write them off while they have Brady & BB, but they’re not the team that they were. More importantly, Brady isn’t the QB that he was. Turns out he’s not a cyborg or god – he’s just a dude who is 42 and showing it.

This gives me much hope, and much to enjoy. I don’t discount that they might have one more run in ’em, but find it unlikely. I mean, they MAY still lose the division. Ya never know.

So you have got to enjoy this twice in the last 17 games. You would rather see the Pats lose than your Steelers win. That is just sad.

  22. “The guys are doing the best they can.”

I heard that said a lot at my nephew’s Tee Ball game.

  23. Brady should look in the mirror.
Instead of admiring his own reflection, maybe he should try reflecting on his own awful performance.

  24. You guys trashing Edelman… how many SB rings do any of your elite receivers have or helped to have? Most of them will retire and some already retired without sniffing SB. Edelman doesn’t have freaky athletic abilities like the elite ones, just like Brady but they both worked hard to look and play like elites.

Well, 21 was their own doing. That INT and 7 points is squarely on Brady’s crap decision. Period. And, if Goodell would stop cheating, it would have been less than that. Van Noy was armbarred to the ground on the Stills TD.

How dare the D, that’s constantly on the field due to pathetic offensive play, not hold a team to less than 10 points again with the flu on the road.

    Shame on them!

It’s a lack of consistency on offense. They throw games away on the road without consistency, but it’s the time of year, like last year, where BB needs to have the intervention between McD and buddy Brady.

Been a problem for years, technically. They get too much leash to run the offense. When BB steps in, he usually fixes it. It worked last year with weaker WRs on the field. Hogan? Both Dorsett and Sanu are better than what Hogan was last year at the X.

This isn’t rocket science. This is Brady and MCD doing a poor job. The Pats OL had its 2nd best blocking game of the year last night, but you’d never know it based on how bad Brady played.

  27. The offense is what it is and it will be hard to fix the problems during the season. While the defense is very good, the D is not nearly as good as it was made out to be by some. Unless something drastic happens (like the Pats signing AB), I don’t see much of a chance of the Patriots going to Baltimore and winning although Brady should never be counted out.

  28. As they say: “all good things must end.” Well, IMHO the Tom Brady era is ending right before our eyes.

  29. How many of you idiots claiming Brady is done and the Patriots are done will be willing to save your posts and come back here and eat crow if Patriots win the Super Bowl again. After all we have listened to you blowhards for 3 years now and the Patriots won 2 Super Bowls in that 3 year window. Put up or shut up silly girls.

    Go Hawks!

  32. Lots of overreaction from the fans and the haters. Typical of the haters.

Defense got outplayed, offense stopped running the ball too soon, Harry is a rook with little playing time, Sanu is still getting the routes down, Dorsett and Edelman were often doubled.

The people saying “it’s over” for the Pat’s haven’t been watching football very long.

  33. Let’s hear from the geniuses this evening who recently professed to be convinced Brady has absolute final say on Patriots personnel decisions. lmao

  34. Isn’t this on the O-Coordinator to game plan plays which the rookies can understand? Too many times this year I’ve seen plays that even I could diagnose before the ball was snapped. Some of this has to fall back on JM too.

  35. Patriots are fooling themselves. They’ve only beaten one playoff caliber team all year–the Bills. Their schedule is the easiest in the history of the NFL. When you look at the AFCN and the NFCE, there’s only one team with a solid winning record (Ravens) and the Ravens embarrassed them to no end. Brady and his wife can bad mouth all the receivers he wants. That’s his go-to excuse when he gets clobbered. Sad.

  36. It’s almost refreshing to see the Pats lose a game. The usual contingent of haters do not have to go to their whiney crybaby excuses as to why the Pats won. The Pats got crushed. They have been crushed 2 games this season. Learn and move on. You figured the haters would do the same after years of embarrassment.
