Bengals still hold top spot in 2020 NFL Draft, Giants narrow gap

For a moment on Sunday, it looked like no one wanted the top pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, since all the teams at the top of the order were winning.

But we have come to count on the Giants.

If the season ended today, the Bengals (1-11) would still hold the top spot in next year’s selection order. Also, a lot of people would be saying: “Why did the NFL season end the Tuesday after Week 13?”

But the Giants are more secure in the second spot, after wins by Washington (3-9) and Miami (3-9) kept those teams in the third and fourth slots. The Giants, meanwhile, have lost eight in a row and seem intent on challenging the Bengals.

The Falcons (3-9) would pick fifth based on current standings, followed by the Lions (3-8-1), Cardinals (3-8-1), Jaguars (4-8), Jets (4-8), and the Chargers (4-8), who crept into the top 10 with a third straight loss.

The Broncos fell from fifth last week to the 11th spot, showing the volatility at the bottom, as the teams at the top of the league separate themselves from the chaff pretty early this year.

  1. Good news for the Bengals, even if they end up with the #2 pick I don’t see the Giants drafting Burrow after drafting Daniel Jones last year.

And as an LSU fan, I’d rather see Joe go to the Bengals than the dumpster fire Redskins.

  2. The Giants will set themselves up good if they are able to nab the # 1 pick. Someone that needs a QB will be banging on there door for that pick and the Bengals will cave and have to swap picks with them plus a 2nd or a 3rd to get their franchise QB. Or another team could swap 1st rd picks and a player. Like I said they’ll set themselves up good if they nab the 1st pick.

  3. I don’t think the Giants are going to be picking a QB. The danger of NY getting the #1 pick is trading it to another team so they can get Burrow ahead of the Bengals. If Cincy wants Burrow, they HAVE to get the #1 pick.

  4. Connor, if you want Burrow to have a good career, you shouldn’t want him to go to the Redskins OR the Bengals. (And I’m a Bengals fan)

  5. Dolphins would obviously take the best QB available, as would Falcons and Lions. Redskins likely would stick with Haskins and Giants would stick with Jones (assuming they don’t fire their GMs). The Bengals face 2 bad teams (Browns and Dolphins) in 3 games here, they’re dangerously close to letting some QB needy team leapfrog them. They can’t do anything right, including tank.

I was thinking that too at first, but all the Chase Young talk is going to make him so hard to pass up. A non-QB needy team is going to keep that top spot to take him 1 overall. I think top 2 will be OK if they want Burrow, as long as the team ahead of them is the Skins or Giants.

  7. The Redskins amazingly improved their draft position this week despite a win, thanks to their strength of schedule taking a major blow. The rest of the NFC East losing threw a nice fat 0-6 into their aggregate opponent’s record, and the Jets, Patriots, Lions, Vikings, Panthers and 49ers threw in another 0-6.

  8. Giants won’t pass on Young unless it’s the Bengals at #2 trading up. I don’t know if a team picking 5 to 8 is going to give up 1/2 a draft to trade up with the Giants. Besides, Gettleman wants a guy, for better or worse, he takes the guy. He doesn’t get ‘cute’.

Redskins need the OT. Giants need the OT or the Edge. Cincy and Miami need a QB. If all picked in the top 3, that’s how it would fall as the Giants or Skins know the 1 team you can’t extort, are the Bengals.

The Dolphins are actually getting better. Only team going backwards at the top are the Giants. So they will probably win.
