Josh McDaniels: No shortcuts to getting offense on same page

The Patriots scored touchdowns on their final three possessions of last Sunday night’s game against the Texans, but their first seven drives resulted in three points and they went back home with a 28-22 loss.

Sluggish offensive performances are nothing new for the Patriots this season and one of the reasons cited for their issues has been the makeup of their wide receiving corps. Rookie wideouts N'Keal Harry and Jakobi Meyers have been thrust into bigger roles alongside the recently acquired Mohamed Sanu, which means that several players are still getting accustomed to the offense.

On Tuesday, head coach Josh McDaniels was asked on a conference call about ways to make it easier for Tom Brady to work with the young receivers. McDaniels’s answer could extend to Sanu as well as it centered on there being no substitute for time.

“I don’t think there is any shortcut to being on the same page in terms of anticipating what the other person is thinking, seeing and feeling,” McDaniels said. “A lot is made of somebody thinking one thing and somebody else thinking something else. I think there are a lot of factors in the passing game that would determine what being on the same page really means. But practice repetition, there is no shortcut to it. Every rep we take in practice, every pass we throw, every side session that we’re able to take part in, every conversation, every one-on-one drill that we do in practice, every film session that we’re in, it just continues to try to build off of the last one.”

The Patriots have four more weeks in the regular season to build up those reps in hopes of finding more production during games because one bad outing come January could end this season’s push for a ring in New England.

  1. Randy Moss ain’t walking through that door, Rob Gronkowski isn’t walking through that door.

Brady has done more with a crew of less talented receivers so i am not sure where the disconnect is this year.

    Maybe it’s finally Brady….

  2. Not sure if they can crank up the ol’ magic this year. A lot of tough teams to get through. I’ll never count them out, though, until it’s over.

  3. Is this a shot at Brady for not attending off-season workouts/mini-camps? Kinda seems like it…

As a Pats fan, it definitely bothered me that he would forego that work with the new receivers.

  4. Josh wasn’t promoted to the best of my knowledge. They haven’t won the division yet, never mind a 1st round bye. They need to step up.

  5. You shouldn’t have chickened out of the Indy job Josh. Frank Reich has made chicken salad outta nothing. You can never be half the coach as him or Vrabel. Good luck in NE stuck as #2

No the problem is Bill Belichick making too many mistakes on the decisions in the offense.Through free agency and Draft.Name how many probowl wide receivers has Bill Belichick Drafted 0.Name how many probowl wide receivers they have had picked up in free agency 1 and that was Randy Moss.Having Gronk masked the problems for all these years but now he is no longer playing you can clearly see the issues.Brady does all he can but he can only do so much.Poor Drafting Poor scouting and Poor development is the real issue. When and if Brady retires you will see.Dont get me wrong Billecheck is one of the the Greatest coaches but has made alot of Bad decisions and because the Patriots play in the AFC those bad decisions can be covered up.If the Patriots were an NFC team they wouldn’t have had this much success.

  7. Oh yes there is. And he’s already getting paid.

I was watching Josh Gordon play last night and he looked pretty good to me. It’s about time to see what the rookie running back from Alabama can do too. Sony Michel is a tackle waiting to happen. Tick tock.

  8. People have gotten wise to Belicheat. His scams have been shut down. He can make it by playing fair. I, for one, am happy to see integrity restored to the game.

  9. Kansas City should be tough, The Bills are… pretty good. Even Miami is trending up. (Cinci? Who knows) Win these three and the “end of the Patriots” can be put on hold until the playoffs.
Brady has been decent, but conservative: a lot of throwaways in the last few weeks; managing the game for the defense. Maybe too much.
Someone should have told the Texans: New England doesn’t do “garbage time”. Pats almost came away with an onside kick with 50 seconds to play that would have set them up for a chance at a game winning TD.

  10. I actually see Brady’s frustration. He takes the hometown discount year after year so they can surround him with talent. This year where’s the talent. He is essentially paying for his receivers and they are putting no-name rookies around him.

  11. Time to wake up, McDoofus and Tommy. No more excuses. Include everyone. Use 2 back sets with 2 WRs and 1 TE.

Use your strenhgts and achieve balance.

Of course, this means Brady needs to stop being a stupid snob, possibly ruining the season like last year, and McDoofus needs to be a lot better than what he has been.

Can’t blame Newhouse anymore. Said it then, say it now.

All comes down to how and when this personnel is deployed.

If BB benched Brady for as many bad throws and decisions he’s had this year, this is the equivalent of benching Michel one time for one drop. Or, Harry or Meyers.

Tom is not perfect, so he needs to stop with the garbage and start respecting the hardworking personnel in house.

You can’t tell me Hogan and Cordarrelle Patterson are superior to what they have now at WR. And, Gronk was MOSTLy used to block last year. Go look at his stats, people. He was very good as a blocker last year, but not used in the passing game.

For the love of god, use the 2 back set. Why on earth would you not use a strength? This is why we lost SB 42 and SB 46, too. Outright stupidity, belligerence and over-analysis is what has failed this offense through the years.

We went from “NE is the favorite with the Sanu trade” to “they have no talent” in about a month.

    LMAO

    Awesome IQ level, everyone.

Well, it IS either that or it’s what happened last year with Brady acting like a baby as well.

The second he gets 1 HOF/All Pro target removed from his arsenal, he pouts. It’s true.

You will not find a bigger diehard fan of the TEAM than myself, but that is the truth. No other All Pro or HOF QB does this, year in and year out.

And, quite frankly, if BB thinks it’s taking too much to get Brady to knock it off, maybe this is it and Stidham is the guy in 2020.

They walked from Malcolm Butler because Steve Belichick thought it was a “chore” getting him mentally ready to play all year.

Brady can’t even admit when he sucks. He just lets the Brady Fanboy Media ksis his butt in the press again and blast his hardworking teammates instead.

When Rex Ryan has it 100% wrong, you know the other side of the coin is right. Put it that way.

  13. I finally got to watch the game. The loss to Houston wasn’t as bad as people made it out to be. There were a few plays which really swayed the game.

I’m ok with where they are at. As JM says, the receivers and Tom need time together.

Also – Houston go away with mugging the Pats receivers!

  14. Well, Brady has now proven that he can no longer turn no-names into All-Pro WRs. Could it be because he is getting older? Perish the thought!

Either way, they are going to have to do something or they could end up as the 5 seed.

  15. I would like to see them play Bolden at fullback. At 220 he’s big enough to block but he also has the ability to run with the ball and be a receiver. That let’s them use a viable play action Game and have an outlet for Brady if he needs it.

Now they have Tom who is not a threat to run and a fullback that only blocks. That lets the defense double Edelman and put a corner on White, leaving Brady with limited options. Using Bolden makes such a defensive game-plan difficult.

  16. The Patriots have had such a great run of success, I think the best thing to do is to get your popcorn ready and just watch. Despite their flaws, they have put them selves in a good position tied for the best record in the NFL and in line for a bye. After everything they have accomplished in the last 3 years they have already exceeded my expectations this year.

  17. Oh what no next man up ??…… aahhh the excuses and blame oozing out all over – every January is the same except for when you run out time / players & decisions that bail you out – there is a shelf life on everything:
    Footnote: NFL = WWE ………

It’s not a hometown “discount”. Brady gets that if he takes up too much of the cap, the team will be worse.

He’s paid maybe a tick under

But, he also pimps his TB12 brand on Foxborough property, too.

Enough with this victim mentality of garbage. He was a 6th rd pick that BB had winning 3 SBs in 4 years with Antowain Smith as a lead back and WRs like Troy Brown, David Patten, Branch and Givens.

It’s absolutely preposterous to think that if Brady commanded 35-40 mil per the last few years, the Pats would be playing in SBs. They wouldn’t be. I know it, any adult with even a 2 year college degree knows it, and Brady and BB know it.

Brady would in no way, shape or form have won even 3 SBs playing for another GM or Coach for one of those moronic franchises, which litter the league with greedy owners and dumb GMs and Coaches.

    Period.

Last year they won the Super Bowl, so not sure how Brady almost ruined anything. The year before he threw for 505 in the Super Bowl and the year before that he won the Super Bowl. Give the guy a break. NE has won a few fluke SB’s and lost a few they could have won so it balances out. I could care less about style points.

  20. The end to the Patriot run is near. If not for the awesome D, Patriot nation would have freaked sooner. Not too hard to gameplan for a team who’s primary weapons are a slot WR and a 3rd down back. Where are the playmakers? Should have drafted Mclaurin Metcalf or Deebo Samuel. The days of going 6-0 in the division are about over.

The team sucked on offense last year as well early in the season, and for a while the D carried the team.

Were you in a coma? The D then won the SB. Brady had a great title game vs a crap KC D, yes.

But, once Brady relinquished his obsessive passing approaches and they committed to the run with Michel more, yes, NE’s offense was saved.

It’s like you people have no memory of things because you think Brady plays an A game every week, when he clearly doesn’t.

Why do you think JimmyG or now Stidham were drafted?

Baloney. They squandred 75 billion opportunities to take the lead and win the game, earlier in the game like they did vs Baltimore with the Edelman fumble.

Where was the urgency? Why were they running it late in the game and slowly getting to the line like they had all day?

Sure, the onside kick, if handled a bit better by Bolden, likely steals a win. But, they were horrible on offense all night.

  23. Brady hasn’t been to 9 SBs by accident. He has so much experience, particularly making up for bad throws, coming from behind in playoffs and SBs. He has seen it all, as have White Edelman BB McDaniels. Won and lost.

His receivers haven’t been through anything and Tom’s vast experience may be tough for these young receivers. Tom does need more experienced players heading into the playoffs but it isn’t coming.

Their defense will have to work their tails off on Sunday, but they are aging.

The clues are all there. Tom may make mistakes but he always has in big games. It is the experienced players who can overcome those mistakes.

I don’t believe this offense is ready for playoff prime time. They have to work side by side with a QB and who has 20 years worth of high level competition and knows how to win. Consistently.

    They aren’t ready.

  24. I honestly don’t know why Kraft won’t take on Antonio Brown. Players & coaches are expected to put personal feelings aside to WIN…. WHY not the owner? And I am NOT a fan of AN, he’s a complete idiot. But the Pats Belicheck & organization certainly can have an idiot and NOT let it affect their game, they might be the only team that could IF they wsnt to.

Right NOW – at least for the rest of this year – AB could be convinced (& contracted) to agree to go off social media for the year end run.

To be very honest about it, without any personal feelings or preferences, if I make a totally honest assessment… whether anyone “likes” it or not, if the Pats/Brady/Belichik can get Brown on the team… they become a major Super Bowl favorite.

  25. Some years, it just comes together. 2003, 2014, 2016, and 2018 come to mind. Other years (2012, 2013, and 2015), not so much. This year is looking like the latter for New England. It will be hard to overcome their terrible injury luck at OL and bad choices at receiver.

On the other hand, they are still 10-2 and may get a first round bye for the 10th straight season. It will never be this good again for New England fans. Enjoy it until the end. Brady will go down fighting.

  26. Just need Brady to manage the game and take care of the football. The defense and special teams are more than capable to win it all.

  27. Houston did a better job of managing the game.

    The Patriots had poor starting field position: 6, 7, 19, 22, 25, 25, 25, 26, 31

The Patriots lost the turnover battle. The one turnover, Houston intercepting Brady, set them up for an early TD.

The Patriots converted 10 of 19 3rd and 4th down plays but that still left 8 possession changes (one field goal).

The Patriots lost and their offense has been relatively dormant over several games but I wouldn’t count them out.

  28. Excuse me Josh, there is a well known short cut = throw to the open man

Return to the early days when Brady once practiced this.

Even if and that’s a huge if, Kraft wanted to take AB back Goodall still has not cleared him to play. And even if he does, he could still be put on the exempt list. I suspect AB won’t be playing this year. All his own fault of course.

  30. The Patriots should bring up TE Jacob Hollister from the practice squad – Oh wait, he was making some awesome catches last night for the Seagawks….

That Colts job was prefaced with false information on Andrew Luck and Josh smartly declined to remain with the winningest organization in sports. Has a bucket of SB rings and is instrumental to the current champions. He’s the odds-on favorite to replace Belichick when the time comes.

No, its exactly what the article said. You could see all game the guys not being where they were supposed to. The thing is, the problem the article is describing and what McDaniels says is needed to correct it (time and reps) is spot on too. And with three WR all this new to the team all at once this might not be something the Patriots have enough time to fix before the ‘one slip and you are done’ part of the season.

Any working professional who is serious about their career knows that if you ever note that a prospective employer is lying to you in any way about the job you and they are considering you for thats one of the biggest red flags there is and anyone with smarts just gets away fast while they still can. Time will tell how his career will play out, maybe it never will even. But regardless of that he made the correct decision that day.

That would be really fun, and a welcome change. And good for everyone – the league, opposing fans, and especially Patriots fans. The way some are talking on these boards lately, some humble pie wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing.
