NFC playoff picture: A shakeup at the top

Getty Images

There’s a new team atop the NFC West and a new team holding down the No. 1 seed in the conference as we head into the final four weeks of the regular season.

Wins by the Saints last Thursday night and the Seahawks on Monday night coupled with the 49ers’ loss in Baltimore means that the Niners are now looking up at both teams after holding down their spot at the top for the first three months of the season.

That’s the most significant change to the way things are shaping up in the NFC. Here’s how the entire playoff picture looks with Week 13 in the books:

LEADERS
1. Saints(10-2) They’ve clinched the NFC South and a win over the 49ers at home this week will cement their spot at the top of the conference.

2. Seahawks (10-2) Monday’s win was their fifth in a row and they’ll be in first as long as the wins keep coming.

3. Packers (9-3) The Packers are at home the next two weeks before a Week 16 road date with the Vikings that could settle the NFC North.

4. Cowboys (6-6) They missed another opportunity to strengthen their hold on the NFC East and they’ll get another one Thursday in Chicago.

5. 49ers (10-2) They’ll have to adjust from being chased to being the chaser over the final weeks of the season.

6. Vikings (8-4) Head coach Mike Zimmer said Monday’s loss wasn’t the end of the world and they can right their ship against the reeling Lions this week.

OUTSIDE LOOKING IN
7. Rams (7-5) The offense finally came to life against Arizona; Can they get the same production against the Seahawks this week?

8. Bears (6-6) Beating the Lions keeps some hope alive, but a loss to the Cowboys would all but extinguish it.

9. Buccaneers (5-7) While they keep fighting and the schedule isn’t overly daunting, the Bucs likely dug themselves too deep a hole.

10. Eagles (5-7) As long as the Cowboys keep losing, the Eagles have a chance to snatch the NFC East if they can figure out how to win a few games.

11. Panthers (5-7) The playoffs would have been a long shot with a win over Washington and now they’re a pipe dream.

12. Washington (3-9) They can’t earn a Wild Card, but could still win the NFC East.

ELIMINATED
13. Lions (3-8-1) David Blough didn’t look overmatched in his NFL debut, although it still added up to another loss for the Lions.

14. Cardinals (3-8-1) Arizona’s given up at least 400 yards in each of the last five games and nine times overall this season.

15. Falcons (3-9) They’ve reverted to form the last two weeks and that’s probably not good news for head coach Dan Quinn.

16. Giants (2-10) If Andy Dalton can dial up another win or two in Cincinnati, the Giants may be on the clock the second the regular season ends.

  2. “Road date with the Vikings that could settle the NFC North.”

The Vikings would need to get help for that game to mean anything in the NFC North. As I have said, the Packers totally control their own destiny and the Vikings are totally irrelevant to them.

The Packers focus this week is the Redskins. One game a time.

We have loftier goals this season and are not concerned about your little Vikings Josh. Yes, Alper is a Vikings fan like his boss.

    #GoPackGo!🏈

  3. Might have a team with 13 wins playing on the road in the post-season. Possibly starting with a trip to play a team with 8 wins.

  4. Tough win versus a good Vikings team last night. Suddenly Seattle fans are in the weird position of rooting for the niners this week hoping they can deal the Saints a loss that vaults the Seahawks into the 1 seed. Go Hawks!

  5. The possibility that the ‘Skins (3 wins, 9 losses) could still win the NFC East is comical.
Shows how weak that division is this season.

  6. The Niners are still the best team this year without question. Both of their losses were flukes with their opponents greatly benefiting from injuries and TONS of help from the officials. There isn’t a team in this league that can beat us fair and square. By the end of this year the Niners will have their sixth Lombardi and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop it. Marching towards six! Feels great baby!

  7. I think it would be absolutely wild if the Redskins won the division. I’m no fan by any means but that division is so bad and the Cowboys are so annoying, it would be fitting for the Redskins to win it. Even if Haskins is clueless.

  8. When the Bears beat Dallas on Thursday, will Jerry fire Jason Garrett as his scapegoat to cover up his failure as GM and Owner of that fake “America’s Team?”

Everyone knows that the Patriots are America’s team.

  9. Absolutely ridiculous that either the 49ers or the Seahawks could win 12, 13 games and end up having to go to Dallas or Philadelphia.

NFL lifer, 38-year fan. I don’t know what should be done, maybe a provision that if a team wins a division with a regular-season win total under nine, and they’re facing a wild card team with double digit wins, the wild card team gets the home game. Pathetic that Philly or Dallas could host anything at this point, just stupid. And I hate the Seahawks, but I would argue it if they end up the wild card team.

  10. Would be very interesting if SF loses to Saints this weekend, wins their other two games and Seattle wins theirs. If SF won week 17, we’d have a 13 win wildcard team. In that scenario, they’d both have lost to the same three teams (Saints, Ravens, each other). Winner of division would depend on how well GB and Washington finish for SF vs Minnesota and Philly for Seattle. Right now GB and Wash are 12-12 combined, Min and Philly 13-11, so advantage Seahawks. Pretty sure that’s how it works that far down the tie breakers.

The playoff order as stated in this article is an objective fact. Perhaps you were mistaken in thinking that this is some type of subjective ranking. Or perhaps you just don’t understand the difference.

  12. As soon as I saw the 49rs behind Dallas and Green bay I knew this was nonsense.

Did you think before you typed this?

  13. America’s Team is definitely the Patriots, no argument there. The Cowboys are moving to the Canadian football league which is a much more fitting environment for that failed squad. The Texans run the show in Texas and are the more popular team.

  14. The wildcard Clarans won this last weekend by losing if you read their fans comments. Lots of holds missed, lots of injuries, and lots of rain. They could end up 10-6 and out of the playoffs but still the best team because, you know, Kittles missed a few games.

These are playoff rankings, not power rankings, and they are currently not leading their division. That would put them in the first wild card spot, which is essentially the 5th playoff spot. I know, reading comprehension is difficult. Maybe an adult can help you next time.

  17. Ravens beat the entire NFC West. 4-0

They should worry about their OWN division. 3-1

  18. Look,

The 49ers ARE good… but please, they have played 3 legit QBs this year, and lost to 2 of them…

Kyle Allen, Kyler Murray, Mason Rudolph etc. Wont br starting for the opposing team, and more than likely they will be playing on the road the entire playoffs…

They have had a good season, but dont expect a long post season run

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

The Vikings were lucky to be in this close game. The badminton TD was beyond lucky. The no-call “arm going forward” Cousins fumble…..lucky. The blown coverage walk-in-backwards Treadwell TD…..lucky. The luckiest team in the NFL. The game didn’t feel as close as the final score.

  20. Seattle owns a great stat, their offense leads the league in giving up TD’S to opposing defenses they did it again last night. Wilson looked like a bum , which is what Seattle fans have been calling Garrapolo all season. Seattle almost 💩 the bed last night, and they play like that against the Rams then they lose. They play like that against the 49ers they get beaten badly. San Francisco is the best TEAM in the NFC and Seattle will be on the short end of it in December.

  21. Please just lose out, Lions. Don’t screw the pooch like you did last year winning a game you shouldn’t win in week 17.

  22. Last night notwithstanding… it’s kind of interesting to see a Seahawk fan talk about luck when they have been blessed with the “Luck” god over the past decade more than anybody…

    The Fail Mary…
    The Romo Dropped snap…
    The Blair Walsh miss…
The missed illegal batted ball in the Detrout game…
The Julio Jones non call pass interference…

And these are just the ones I came up with off the top of my head…

So please…use Luck in an argument if you must…but also realize that it cuts both ways

C’mon, this is seriously just a stupid take.
To what end are they even doing this?
If the NFL really wanted to “shape” the postseason stable and outcome, the Jets, Giants, Rams, Bears and Eagles would all be having much better seasons.
    Every season.

Trust me, the NFL is not about to strangle the golden goose to amuse their own whims.
If they were going to do anything out of the ordinary, as you suggest, it would be to their own benefit to garner more $$$.

Higher ratings, by utilizing the larger tv markets, to generate larger tv ratings and eventually contracts.
They don’t even have to do that, because they’re already the biggest bully on the block.
They have been for some time, and it certainly doesn’t look like anything is going to change soon.

I’m sorry your team is struggling, but try again.

Slow your roll little man.. you have been and will be again Seattles little brother looking in. If you know anything about football and been paying attention the last ( more then a few) years in late NOV and early DEC all the way till the playoffs Wilson and the Seahawks usually play strong. Niners won’t win up in Seattle. You have a very very good team across the board. ( Jimmy G is the weak link)

  25. I don’t troll on here like some fans but I’m calling my shot. As soon as the 9ERS beat the Saints and they will WATCH on Sunday.

They will have beaten Green Bay and New Orleans head up. They will also have a better record then them but, find themselves still as 5th or 6th seed Sunday night. Unless the Rams can pull a shocker.

I don’t care if you hate the 9ERS or not. You have to admit they are getting screwed. If it was your team, you definitely would be in agreement.

  26. If the Packers can’t get Kevin King to use his speed more effectively, a “superstar” and veteran at safeties to not be constantly in the jet wash, a soft Oreo middle besides Kenny Clark to stop the run between the Smiths, and Blake Martinez to eat his Wheaties an man up; it won’t matter how many points A-Rod can put up. These top teams will be too much and Pettine will be out as ML bring sin his own guy next year.
It should be Defcon 1 on “fixing” that D before they face another playoff caliber team. I would never bet against Rodgers, but I would bet against this D right now.

With SEA, @DAL and @SF next up for the Rams, you can count them OUT.

You might want to slow your roll there, Skippy. The Rams definitely have a shot to beat Seattle, They always give them fits and only lost to them earlier this season because Zuerlein missed a game winning FG by a foot. Dallas is hot garbage right now so that game is winnable. SF will be the tough test but they aren’t unbeatable.

  28. Little man? Obviously you don’t know me. Seattle and Denzel Wilson will be beaten by the better team in December. Only thing the 49ers have to watch out for is the Refs in Seattle that can’t seem to call holding or PI when it happens every other play.

  29. Seattle beat a on the fence Vikings team that looked like they were on the ropes early. Seattle won’t get away with letting teams back in the game like they did last night. That stat they own leading the league in giveaway TDS will catch up to them in December.

  30. Vikes just have to stay ahead of the Rams — the Pack-Vikes game will be fun, but it is going to be hard for the Vikes to take the NFCN now. And based on stellar’s “luck” rants, you can tell that the previous trolling of Vikes fans has now unduly influenced all semblance of logical commenting, which is a shame.

  32. Despite the sentiment to suggest otherwisw…

There is no “superteam” in the NFL this season, the 6th seed in the NFC could easily represent.

  33. If the Niners beat the Saints on Sunday that would set up a nice circle at the top NFC. Niners beat the Saints, Saints beat the Seahawks, Seahawks beat the Niners…….. Seeing how the Niners play against traditional pocket QB’s there is a pretty good chance this will happen.

Same can happen in the AFC if the Patriots beat the Chiefs. Pats>Chiefs>Ravens>Chiefs.

  34. On the bright side the current seeding would mean a trip to Lambeau for the Vikings. With the Packer’s O and D both ranked in the bottom third of the league that would be the match up every Viking fan would want

Speed kills and Brees and company is no match for this 49er defensive or offense. Brees won’t have time to do anything and your running game won’t be a factor. San Francisco swarms to the ball and I see a 34 to 10 beat down coming, with the 49ers coasting to another victory.

    Sure.

  43. are the Giants definitely eliminated? what happens if a 4-way tie at 6-10? could still happen factoring in head-to-head matchups!

  44. Actually I gave the Packers too much credit. The Packer’s O and D AND special teams are all ranked in the bottom third of the league. That is all 3 phases of the game. Yeah I am sure no fan base would want any part of that in the playoffs.

  45. I actually hope the Packers get the Vikings in the first round of the playoffs.

No team is worse in the playoffs this decade (or in history) than the Vikings. It would be the same thing as a first round Bye.

  46. 49ers would still be in first place if only Shanahan had played for the tie at the end of overtime against the Seahawks (like common sense said he should have). Losing that game is going to haunt them.

  47. For those of you saying the Packers have nearly zero chance at a first round bye, you are wrong.

There are a fews ways the Packers can guarantee a first round bye, but the easiest to discuss is the Packers win out and the Saints lose to the 49ers.

  48. Shehawks can gloat all they want, but that performance last night doesn’t scare anybody. Defense looked average at the end of the game, and even Denzel Wilso missed some throws he should have made. Your on top for now Seahawks but you won’t be at the end.

  49. This is all water cooler talk…

There is realistically no “seeding now”, or “if the season ended today” talk that ever actually matters…

    You know why ???

Because the season ISNT ending today… all of it means nothing…

Like it or not, the NFL is definitely scripted. If it makes you feel any better, all professional sports are scripted. Any major event that involves multibillion-dollar figures and a large supporting cast will have corruption. The player injuries are real, the athletes have to make the plays in order to win, and it all certainly takes practice. Most of the players are not in on it, but the coaches, owners, and star quarterbacks are. This is why when unknown professional athletes are interviewed, they’re not aware of it. They think it’s also real. How could Rodgers complete a hail mary pass around three to four defenders in the end zone? This is fake. Why would the Seahawks pass the ball on the one yard line in Super Bowl XLIX? The Patriots even studied that play in practice ahead of time. How could a team blow a 28-3 lead in a super bowl when every competent football coach and fan in existence knows that you’re supposed to run the ball a lot in the second half when you have a lead like that?

How about a 10-6 wild card team beating an 18-0 team in the super bowl? This is so hilariously fake. How about Michael Vick’s famous comeback win over the Giants after Jackson’s walkoff kickoff return touchdown? It’s meant to mock the general public. That was a big night for Vegas after Super Bowl XLII. Flags can be thrown in the second half when something goes against the desired outcome, calls can get overturned or made up on the spot, and players can play awful on purpose. What’s it to them? These athletes are all set for life financially. Roger Goodell loves creating drama when there isn’t any for ratings, especially if it involves the Green Bay Packers, New England Patriots, or Dallas Cowboys. It’s all just for entertainment. It even states that on the back of each ticket. The athletes are still skilled, but these owners are not dumb.

    ___________

Wait a minute, I never said anything about officials never making bad calls, but as far as scripted games, explain further.
Don’t just toss around baseless accusations without any context or reasonable explanations.

Why was the 2018 NFC Championship game scripted to have the Rams win.
Where was the financial benefit to the league.
    What sense did it make?
All it provided was a whole lot of headaches for the league.

    How about that Lion/Packer game?
Why were the officials complicit in making a late, bad call, other than of course the obvious, that it was just a bad call.
    Again, Why?
    Where’s the money in it???

If you’re going to make wild allegations, at least have the common sense to back them up with some sort of reasoning behind your bizarre theories.

  54. wafflehead of course you think the NFL is real your team is the beneficiary of a lot of bad calls. If you weren’t you be be mentioning the refs too. Your team the packers in fact has been gifted 40 first down penalty calls the most in the NFL by a large margin. Your team should be 7-5. And it was more than just one call in the Lions game so just stop right there. In the 100th season they started out with one of the most boring “rivalries” because it is the oldest. That series hasn’t been good since the 1960’s. I would not be surprised to see the NFL continues it sappy season with KC and the packers in the SB just like SB I climax.

  55. They might try to influence the games one way or the other through instant replay calls from NY in order to keep them competitive for ratings…

but there is NO way that they could possibly script a game.

You think they scripted Wilson to volleyball a pick-six like the one that happened last night?

*Backs away slowly keeping eyes on subject*

  56. LA is the second biggest market in the country. They hadn’t had a team there in 20 years or more and then the Rams show up. LA didn’t really care about having a team there or not. What better way to gain or fire up a fan base as to get them to the SB. And that is how the NFL wins.

  57. scripted in they know who is going to win not how. They make that happen on the field with as many horrible calls as needed. Some games you don’t need as many. Sometimes you need 3 calls in a row.

  58. cheeseisfattening says:

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

You’re not at all embarrassed for championing statistics when last year the only thing important to you was wins and losses?

  59. fmc651, let’s try it this way, the NFL employs over 120 officials that make up different officiating teams that travel all over the country to work individual games.

They are part time employees with regular jobs and their own lives.
They aren’t overwhelmingly compensated, in fact just a few short years ago, they had to go on strike to get a raise in salary.

Now as these officials are routinely cycled in and out of the league, at a higher rate than you probably realize, don’t you find it the least bit odd that not one of them has ever come forward to expose this bombshell of a news story? Ever.
Not a single peep of impropriety.

Let me guess, you’re a Viking fan.
Yeah, that’s right, that makes perfect sense.
You are one of these dopey Barney fans that are always playing the aggrieved victim.
Perfectly explains your team’s 58 years of abstract failure.
    The NFL just hates you.
    Got it.
    skoLOL!

  60. Fmc651, I understand what you are saying and honestly, you KNOW that the bean-counters and “idea guys” for the NFL have actually thought about all this… if they hadn’t thought about all this they wouldn’t be doing their jobs.

The new rules for replay where some guys in the dark in New York actually make the calls is an effort to maybe influence games more for ratings. That would include getting teams in a position to be successful and popular in a new market like Los Angeles. That missed p i call on the Saints put the Rams in the Super Bowl. Glaring evidence.

My only problem with what you were saying was using the word “scripted”. The idea that it was all just a big play like the WWE… There are way too many moving parts and different motivations from so many different guys on the field for that to be possible.

  61. I so hope the packers get the Vikings in the first round of the playoffs.

This team is one of the better ones in this decade, and beating the Packers twice is very doable. In fact, for the Vikings, it would be same thing as a first round bye.

I so hope the packers get the Vikings in the first round of the playoffs.

This team is one of the better ones in this decade, and beating the Packers twice is very doable. In fact, for the Vikings, it would be same thing as a first round bye.

Dude, you’re a little late to the party.
Tokyo already beat you to that joke, care to try again?

No team is worse in the playoffs this decade (or in history) than the Vikings. It would be the same thing as a first round Bye.

  63. The Packers benefit from more calls from the officials than any team in the league. Their always going to side with them because of Rodgers. Fact of the matter is, is their not that good.

  64. Lotta salt from 9ers fans. How quickly they forget how foolish they look making brash predictions before a big game.

Brag and boast and make guarantees now, because you are afraid that your magic little season is quickly becoming pedestrian.

See you here next week, talking about how the 9ers are still the best team and would have won the game “if if if if if if”

    Y’all too precious
