“Pretty good chance” Darrel Williams out for Chiefs this week

The Chiefs were down one running back when Sunday’s game against the Raiders got underway and they were down two by the time the final whistle blew at the end of the fourth quarter.

Darrel Williams injured his hamstring during the game, which left the rushing duties to LeSean McCoy and Darwin Thompson with Damien Williams already out of action. On Monday, head coach Andy Reid wasn’t optimistic about Williams’s chances of returning to action against the Patriots this week.

“Darrel’s injury, he had a hamstring and that didn’t look very good,” Reid said, via the Kansas City Star. “So, there’s probably a pretty good chance he doesn’t play.”

Thompson had 44 yards on 11 carries in his most extensive playing time of his rookie season. Given the team’s aversion to relying too heavily on McCoy, Thompson could see even more work if both Williamses are out this week.

  1. coming out of training camp. Thompson looked like he would be the starter by week three. Then they picked up McCoy and he sat on the bench. He got those 44 yards with 8 men in the box when everyone knew they Chiefs were going to run. I am looking forward to seeing what he does against the Patriots with very little tape on him for them to scout. He is small, quick and eager.

I am looking forward to see how Brady gets his head out of his behind with McDaniels after BB intervenes and directs their gameplanning meeting, as he started to do last year at the end of the year, to end the funny business and over-analysis of how to run the offense.

NE should have layer upon layer of offensive approaches used in these games, mainly because of the system knowledge and continuity of the starters on offense. NE has the best RB group in the NFL and it goes unused and under-utilized in 2 back sets, which could be devastation for opposing defenses in certain situations.

Throw in the hurry up, some power running, and some timely, sneaky passing deep, and NE’s offense has been under-used all year, some due to injury, some due to this insane “CIrcle of Trust” garbage Brady overrates as a perfectionist.

If BB slaps Brady and McD silly all week in the film rooms, KC will have their hands full come Sunday.

  3. I’m guessing the aversion to McCoy has a lot to do with his fumbling. Can’t really trust him unless it’s a pass play where he’s the primary target(because his pass pro isn’t good) or a run outside. I’d expect a huge day from this rookie on Sunday.

  4. Even with the NE offense on the slide, the Chiefs will need all hands on deck to go into Foxboro and pull out a win. I would like to see it but I would not bet money on it.

  5. McCoy’s fumbles against TN and Indy were the differences of other games. Not saying it’s all his fault but if he doesn’t fumble in those games the Chiefs are likely 10-2 and 1st place in the division and a winner take all kind of game Sunday against the pats…

But he did fumble, twice, so here we are at 8-4 and likely hosting TN, Indy, Buffalo or Houston in the wild-card round.
