Week 14 power rankings

Getty Images

1. Ravens (10-2; last week No. 1): The best team in the AFC finally holds the No. 1 seed.

2. Seahawks (10-2; No. 3): No one shows up in big moments like the Seahawks.

3. Saints (10-2; No. 5): They’re on a collision course with the 49ers on Sunday; they could be on a collision course with the 49ers in January.

4. 49ers (10-2; No. 2): From 8-0 and smooth sailing to rough seas and possibly the No. 5 seed.

5. Patriots (10-2; No. 4): Go ahead and bury the Patriots — it plays into their hands.

6. Texans (8-4; No. 9): From a 41-7 blowout loss in Baltimore to big wins over the Colts and Patriots, the Texans have quickly turned their season around.

7. Packers (9-3; No. 7): The division title is theirs for the taking, as long as they don’t stub their toe against Washington, the Bears, or the Lions.

8. Chiefs (8-4; No. 8): Last year’s flavor of the month feels like week-old turkey in 2019.

9. Bills (9-3; No. 10): Yes, No. 9 may be too low; beat the Ravens and Buffalo will crash the top five.

10. Vikings (8-4; No. 6): It’s not the end of the world, but it’s the start of what would be a Super Bowl run the very hard way.

11. Steelers (7-5; No. 11): One week at a time, Mike Tomlin is earning coach of the year consideration.

12. Titans (7-5; No. 12): The team no one notices is putting everyone on notice.

13. Rams (7-5; No. 17): The schedule will be getting a lot tougher down the stretch, but if they play like they did against the Cardinals it won’t matter.

14. Cowboys (6-6; No. 13): A Super Bowl run isn’t as crazy as it sounds, but at some point it would make sense to win a game.

15. Bears (6-6; No. 20): The Bears are back — and they’ll soon be back to the cold, hard reality of a team that isn’t nearly as good as it was in 2018.

16. Raiders (6-6; No. 14): Derek Carr may never actually reside in the house that he’s building in Las Vegas.

17. Colts (6-6; No. 15): If they fail to make it to the playoffs, they can blame their stubborn refusal to upgrade at the kicker position.

18. Buccaneers (5-7; No. 22): They may win just enough games to justify giving Jameis Winston one more chance to prove that he deserves another chance.

19. Browns (5-7; No. 16): Pittsburgh may not have started it, but they definitely finished it. And “it” includes Cleveland’s playoff hopes.

20. Eagles (5-7; No. 18): The Philly Special feels like a long-faded memory.

21. Panthers (5-7; No. 19): Two late-season collapses in two seasons won’t do much to prevent major changes from happening in Charlotte.

22. Broncos (4-8; No. 26): This team isn’t all that far from contending, and if Drew Lock is the real deal next year could get real interesting.

23. Jets (4-8; No. 21): It was fun while it lasted.

24. Chargers (4-8; No. 23): If the goal was to lose a game in every way possible, congratulations.

25. Jaguars (4-8; No. 24): Minshew Mania is back, but until the Coughlin Condundrum is resolved it will be impossible to know where this team is heading next.

26. Falcons (3-9; No. 25): With cap issues galore and key veteran players under contract, it could make sense to stay the course until it becomes easier to rebuild the roster.

27. Washington (3-9; No. 29): There’s nothing like news of Bruce Allen being on the hot seat to wash away some of the dysfunction.

28. Lions (3-8-1; No. 27): Cleaning house two years into a major culture change would be the ultimate Lions thing to do.

29. Dolphins (3-9; No. 30): They’re playing for nothing, but they’re laying the foundation for everything.

30. Cardinals (3-8-1; No. 28): The record doesn’t reflect it, but there’s plenty of hope for the future. As long as they can get Kyler Murray some help.

31. Bengals (1-11; No. 32): Be careful, Bengals; you don’t want to screw up the first overall pick that you’ve worked so hard to earn.

32. Giants (2-9; No. 31): Somewhere, Ben McAdoo is smiling. While wearing an oversized suit and sporting a scalp full of Brylcreem.

Do those count as tie-breakers, er no?

  2. Ravens now firmly at #1 – No question the best team in the league. 4-0 vs the NFC West

  3. Saints beat the Seahawks in Seattle without Drew Brees or Alvin Kamara. With the same record, you’d think logic would place them one spot ahead of the Seahawks. You know…just like they are in the current seeding.

  4. Oh look the Lions are in last place and one of the bottom five teams in the league. Nothing new there, they have been struggling since the end of WWII.

  5. Patrick Mahomes is soooo 2018, much like D. Watson was soooo 2017. Now it’s all *LAMAR*. Next year, after Lamar is solved and everyone wonders where HE went, it may all be *KYLER*. This is all beside the fact Brady may still be winning championships under the TMZ radar.

  6. Vikings are a fraud team and have begun their five game losing streak to their couch for the playoffs.

  8. Steelers should be at 20 or higher. I wonder if they factor in a coach’s ability to instigate melees in order to get players ejected.

  9. Seahawks vastly overrated – lots of wins, but only one by more than one score. Good teams should dominate bad ones. Can’t win it all with lucky breaks like circus catches, opponents’ missed field goals, and last minute turnovers. Let me hear from all the 12s who have been “fan since 1976” but don’t know the last three starting quarterbacks before Wilson, I truly care what you think.

  10. Tomlin being touted as “coach of the year” is funny. Yes, he has done a respectable job dealing with tough injuries. How about the 10-2 Seahawk’s Coach? For a team picked by so many to be an 8-8 or worse team, I feel Coach Carroll should be leading the conversation.

Like Russell Wilson, Coach Carroll and John Schneider have never gotten any votes/consideration for top awards in their respective slots.

The Vikings are not a top ten football team. The Packers own them.

    ___________

A: yes they are – not a top 5 or even 7 team but they are easily one of the top 10 teams in the NFL right now.
B: just because the Pack beat them in week 2 doesn’t mean they own them. it was actually the first time they have beat the Vikings in a few years.
C: even if they did own them, how does 1 team “owning” another automatically make them not a top 10 team?
    Typical delusional Packers fan.

  12. “They’re playing for nothing but laying the foundation for everything.”

The Lions at 28 is the same as the I.Q. of the Ford family….

    ***

On the bright side, their IQ might be up to 32 by the time the season’s over.

  14. Why are the Seahawks ahead of the Saints? Oh, I see. It is so you do not have to drop the Seahawks below the 49ers when they beat the Saints on Sunday.

  15. 17. Colts (6-6; No. 15): If they fail to make it to the playoffs, they can blame their stubborn refusal to upgrade at the kicker position.

    ———-

Upgrade? Who’s available? It’s been a revolving door of Kickers in New England this year. I’d take my chances with Adam.

  16. Browns — you idiots. You could have been 6-6 with a favorable schedule. My ESPN Playoff Machine pegged you for the #6 seed until you did everything go ensure Pittsburgh was righteous for a win. As if losing Garrett wasn’t enough, after the Steelers benched Rudolph (who would have been stoked for the rematch), your coach puts on a flame warrior T shirt designed by a prepubescent girl.

Jets — you idiots. You let the 0-11 Bengals stand between you and a 4 game win streak to 5-7. 4 more might have qualified for the playoffs the way the Browns and Colts are headed. Sorry but when you lose to an 0-11 team — and get hammered in the process — you forfeit all the good will guilt up over the prior 3 weeks.

Colts — you idiots. You own teams like the Texans and Titans and now you let consecutive losses to these posers drop you out of playoff contention. And why haven’t you euthanized Viniateri. This guy — the ACTUAL Adam Viniateri — snatches victory from the mass of defeat — kicks SB winning field goals. He doesn’t have kicks blocked and returned for the touchdowns that lose games.

Raiders — you idiots. Your rivals were TRYING to hand you the division. You could have been a contender. All the talking heads could talk about was how underrated you are. You could have moved into a tie with the Chiefs if you had just beaten the Jets. You were never even IN that game. Just like you were never in the Chiefs game the following week when given a second chance to claim the division.

Eagles — you morons. It’s one thing to lose in consecutive weeks by TD margins to the Patriots and Seahawks (the Browns and Steelers will back me up here), but then you lose to the 2 win Dolphin team that is kicking all its best players to the curb: Tunsil, Wake, M. Fitzpatrick, Landry, and miracle man Drake. If that isn’t enough, all 3 games were decided by a trick play.

Cowboys — you morons. The Eagles are TRYING to hand you the division. And if your owner really wants to invite favorable comparisons to the team that win 3 championships in the 90s, try not to get blown out at home by the team you beat to claim two of those championships.

Panthers — you idiots. You lost to Dwayne Haskins.

Rams — imbeciles! Beating up on the Cardinals is too little too late. No one even wants to SEE you in the playoffs after that 45-6 drubbing by the Ravens. No one’s curious any more. Mystique meet hydrochloric acid.

  17. Ravens correct.
    I’d have Saints at 2.
This weekend is time for the Bills to show if they’re real or not.

OK, lets cool the jets a bit there. Im a proud member of the mafia myself, but given who we have beaten and our current record, 9 seems perfect. We have a lot of hard games ahead of us, and until we can grab a win from Baltimore or NE, then we are not a top 5 team. We also have Pittsburgh in that stretch as well. We need to get one or two wins during this last month to make the playoffs. If we can get them against the top 2 teams in the AFC, then we can call ourselves contenders. Until then, take the top 10, stay humble and get that next win

  19. 49ers went toe to toe with the Ravens, and they drop below the Saints, who lost to the Falcons, and almost dropped to them again? Ravens and Seahawks makes sense, since they actually lost to those teams, but not getting the logic behind the Saints.

  20. It’s still pretty simple for the Patriots, win three of the last four and they’ll have been home a month by the time someone limps into Foxboro for the Divisional Round. A win against KC on Sunday is huge, because any outcome in the Ravens/Bills game could be favorable.

  21. Who here has a crystal ball? Power rankings are a snapshot taken this week. Nothing more. Nothing less.

  22. Love how hyped up other AFC teams are over the Pats so NE can get hungry and turn it on for December and January like last year.

  32. Buccaneers (5-7; No. 22): They may win just enough games to justify giving Jameis Winston one more chance to prove that he deserves another chance.

The Bucs are like 3rd in the entire NFL in Scoring. Second in yardage. Turnovers of course can be chopped down, but this crusade against Jameis with the media is incredible. Tell me professor, who else should the Bucs get? The Trubiskis, The Cam Newton’s, Case Keenums of the world that doesnt move the ball AT ALL? No thanks. Give me the guy that throws deep, is exciting, and moves the dang offense. The Bucs aren’t 5-7 because of their offense captain – even though i know that doesn’t fit your narrative and all

All that would be relevant if this were a college poll. It’s not.
Power rankings are supposed to take into account not only records or standings or head-to-head matchups, but also how a team is playing at the moment.
The Seahawks are on a hot streak. The Saints, since the return of Drew Brees, have had an embarrassing loss to Atlanta and closer games than they should have against teams they should have blown out.
This doesn’t mean the Seahawks are better than the Saints, and in fact I believe they are not. Injuries have hurt New Orleans. But as far as the way the teams are playing of late, this power ranking — which is subjective anyway — probably got it right.
New Orleans will get its chance to prove them wrong if it hosts Seattle in the playoffs.

This weeks matchup in Foxboro will go a long way towards determining the AFC playoff seeding.

Would be nice to see the Pats actually have to play two games instead of hosting one on the way the AFCCG.

  48. Sure is nice being back in our usual spot……atop the NFC West. Clara will have a tough time turning around so quickly after the tough hard hitting loss to the MVP Lamar’s Baltimore Bruisers. I’m sure the Saints are looking forward to handing them a sour plate of gumbo.

Seahawks have a tough game against the Rams, but there should be 10-15,000 Seahawk fans in attendance to root them on as it probably comes down to a field goal. Oh how sweet it is though, taking back what never looked right in Clara’s hands…..the division lead.

Falcons almost beat NO the second time? Please.

Almost as in 44 seconds left to maybe score a touchdown and the 2pt conversion to tie the game? Get real, dude. Divisional matchups are almost always tight regardless of records. This is especially true given the Saints vs Falcons…arguably the league’s best rivalry. By your logic…what would you say about the Seahawks beating the bengals by one point AT HOME!?

  50. Patriots fans are so invested in their fantasy of pretending that if the team they’re not on wins, it means they’re not losers anymore, going to be a lot of fun watching their mental illness manifest on here the rest of the year.

Most are still firmly stuck in the denial phase, as they likely are in all aspects of their own lives or lack thereof.

  51. Texans have righted themselves after a bad loss but I’m not sure the Packers have. They looked very out of sync during the first half Sunday. Turnovers by the Giants and a few big offensive plays were enough to win that game, but they didn’t prove too much. They still have a way to go in order to be taken as serious contenders against SEA, NO, and SF.

  52. 9. Bills (9-3; No. 10): Yes, No. 9 may be too low; beat the Ravens and Buffalo will crash the top five.

Love how hyped up other AFC teams are over the Pats so NE can get hungry and turn it on for December and January like last year.

Yeah they really turned it on in December. Patriots 22, Texans 28. (December 1, 2019)

And they also lost to Miami and Pittsburgh in December last year

    How did that turn out?

  59. 9. Bills (9-3; No. 10): Yes, No. 9 may be too low; beat the Ravens and Buffalo will crash the top five.
    ___________________________________

Is it too low….? Who have the Bills beat? Their victory list reads like a who’s who of the bottom of this Power Ranking.

    Wins over #32, #31, #29 (x2), #27, #23, #22.

They also beat #15 Dallas, who’s playing so well their coach is about to get fired and the feather in their cap is a win over #12 Tennessee…. except it was before they made the QB switch when they were terrible.

I’m not sold on this Buffalo team at all. Win this weekend and we’ll talk.

  60. Pretty sure they won an AFC championship game on the road last season

And already beat the bills in buffalo this season
If you think they are going to lose to them at home you may be the “delusional “ one
    _____________________________________________________________________________

They did win on the road last year, but I was talking historically (around .500). The Patsies are not just losing to quality teams this year, they are getting embarrassed. You don’t think the Chiefs and Bills are licking their chops to get at the Patriots? Chiefs will go up big and the Pats will have a couple garbage late TDs again. And there won’t be any block punt and QB going down to save you against the Bills this time.

Again if you think the Bills are going To NE with the possibility of the division on the line and win with that sorry QB you’re crazy

  62. Every week it’s ” let’s see if the Bills are for real”.

    NE
    Sea
    SF
Hou…. All lost to the Ravens! Are they for real? It’s pretty hard working through everyone’s double standard mentality.

And can’t say the Patriots haven’t beat anyone then say the Bill are licking there chops

    Who have the bills beat?
We know they lost to NE at home

  64. In this past month both the Ravens and Bills have gotten progressively better.

No doubt if Baltimore played Cleveland and KC or Buffalo play Philly and Cleveland again they would both win.

This season was always meant to be progression towards being title contenders for the Bills. A fringe playoff team was the expectation. Nobody including Bills fans expected to clinch a spot by Week 13. Pleasant surprise no doubt.

Easy bud. Both teams look totally different since Week 4 and it’s not like the Pats dominated the game. You could make the argument that if Allen wasn’t taken out they might have won even playing as badly on offense as they did. Should be a different game, not saying the Bills will win. Strange things happen when you play the Pats you know.

  66. Is this thread The Theatre of the Absurd? The Patriots have been embarrassed? Really?

They lost two games, one to the Ravens (10-2) and one by 6 points to the Texans (8-4), both on the road. They are 10-2 and have 3 of their last 4 games at home.

They also have Belichick, Brady, a strong defense and the type of special teams that can deal with a kicker they had to find on the street.

    That goes both ways

You can make the argument JE injures his ribs the week before and wasn’t healthy
The Patriots also lost there staring LT the week before until last week

  68. Brady has won 30 of 40 playoff games as a starting QB. That’s the equivalent of a12 win regular season on average with all games against playoff teams.

  69. “Cheesers are hilarious.

The Vikings should have won every game this year. The only time we ever lose is if the refs cheat. We have the best team in NFL history.”

This must be written by an 8 year old

  70. Niners lost two games by a combined 6 points total. The top five teams are all 10-2 but have lost by alot more points than the niners. Niners are still the best team. Seahawks got blown out by the ravens. Ravens got blown out by the browns. Patriots got blown out by the ravens. Saints for blown out by the falcons. Niners lost to two top teams by a fg each, in overtime and in the last seconds of the fourth quarter. Both games we could’ve won, but our kicker missed the game winning fg in both games at the last minute of the game. Those were good losses that made us better and tougher and will prepare us for a rematch against either team in the playoffs or superbowl. We will beat them next time. Against the seahawks, we didn’t have kittle, sanders or our starting kicker. Against the ravens, it was a heavy rainstorm on the road to the east coast and only lost by a fg . I’m confident we’ll shutdown lamar and his gimmick runs if we meet in the superbowl on a neutral field with good conditions. We shutdown his joke of a passing game to 100 total yards passing. Lmao.🍗 we gonna run the table from here on and we’re winning the superbowl in blowout fashion. The saints are getting blown out next week. Brees will have his worst game ever, with 7 sacks, no tds,3 int, and less than 100 yds passing. Final score is
    Niners 27
    Saints 9

  71. Is Arrowhead stadium for the AFC Championship considered “away from Foxboro”?

It’s still pretty simple for the Patriots, win three of the last four and they’ll have been home a month by the time someone limps into Foxboro for the Divisional Round. A win against KC on Sunday is huge, because any outcome in the Ravens/Bills game could be favorable.
    ___________________________________________________________________

Another delusional Pat’s fan. Have you actually watched your team play? They are awful against quality teams. The couldn’t win away from Foxboro, in the playoffs, when they had good teams. No home field this go around. Losing to the Chiefs and then Buffalo will be the final fork in them. Past glory can’t save you! I almost feel for Tommy and his constant sulking and barking this year. NOT!

  72. Saints are currently sitting on the #1 seed in the NFC and have been getting absolutely hosed by the Refs all year. Just look it up. Outrageous the penalty disparity when you do an in-depth analysis.

Saints beat the Seahawks with their backup QB, lost a “what???” divisional game that they look like they sleep walked through and had a terrible turn of events in Los Angeles and a huge momentum shift when a fumble recovery for a TD was not called correctly.

We will now more after Sunday. I think the Saints, Seahawks and Niners are the class of the NFC and then there are a couple of good teams and then….the Cowboys. haha

Just curious. Why does another person have to justify anything to you?

How many new Niner fans are there from the Harbaugh days? How many new Niners fans from the 80s and 90s that are the ‘old guard’ now? Did you ask those people the same thing? Because there was a time when the Niners were just another franchise, like all other franchises.

No one has to justify anything to you. Get over yourself.

  74. Baltimore is battle tested. What’s overlooked by their record is They have the toughest strength of schedule in the NFL. You know who has the easiest strength of schedule? The Buffalo Bills.

Sorry bills fans, you aren’t there yet. Baltimore is going to roll through that front seven like a hot knife in butter. Especially if that field is nice and dry.

  75. Seahawks are a #8-10 team that sticks around just enough to let their QB squeak out wins against better teams. Don’t get too worked up about it, eventually they will again have to play a team that is too good to let them stick around, like when they lost to the Ravens and Saints

  76. Lol at the new niner fan saying good teams should always dominate bad ones.

Can you prove you are brand new to the NFL any harder? Do you know what a trap game is? Have you heard the term ANY GIVEN SUNDAY? This isn’t college football.

GL in New Orleans…Seattle is concerned with the Rams at the moment. Stop worrying about Seattle for a few weeks.

  77. So much whining about the Pats being ranked at #5. Why?
No matter how the sickly the team looked in a loss to my Texans last week, they’ve still only lost 2 games.

They’re looking at a 1st round bye and the #2 seed in the AFC until proven otherwise. Unless Brady’s arm falls completely off, they are going to be a threat in the playoffs again. The flu won’t last forever, and this week vs. the Chiefs will tell the tale of what direction they’re truly heading. If they get blown out at Arrowhead, then we’ll know.

  78. Again if you think the Bills are going To NE with the possibility of the division on the line and win with that sorry QB you’re crazy

Careful…Patsies have a lot of trouble against mobile QBs.

    Embarrassed, yes!
Brady throwing passes to ghosts. Watson completed passes at will.
You’re kidding yourself if you think the Houston game was close, and don’t even mention the Ravens game.

  79. 9. Bills (9-3; No. 10): Yes, No. 9 may be too low; beat the Ravens and Buffalo will crash the top five.
    ——-
They have to do it in Baltimore too. Put them at at least 4 if they do that

  80. Ravens now firmly at #1 – No question the best team in the league. 4-0 vs the NFC West

Only 3-1 in their own division, which is the only one that matters.

In games played so far Seahawks have played the 4th hardest schedule.

Niners have played the 24th hardest schedule.

  83. Such silliness. They could rank my Seahawks #32 and I’d just think it funny. Hearing people cry over a spot in an opinion ranking is too much.

Vikings are a fraud team and have begun their five game losing streak to their couch for the playoffs.

This guy must not be a Vikings fan. There is no way the Vikings will lose five in a row. That would eliminate hope. They will win enough to blow it on the last week of the regular season or get completely embarrassed in the playoffs. That’s how it works for the Vikings.
