Cowboys trying out three kickers, including Kai Forbath

The Cowboys stuck with Brett Maher after his first nine misses of the season. His 10th missed field goal, though, might prove the last straw.

After Maher missed a 42-yard kick wide right in a 31-24 loss to the Bears, the Cowboys are working out three kickers.

Kai Forbath, Tristan Vizcaino and Nick Rose will tryout Monday, Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News reports.

The team worked out Vizcaino, Austin MacGinnis and Rose last week but didn’t sign any of them.

Maher missed another Thursday, so it seems likely the Cowboys will have a new kicker Sunday.

Maher, who beat out Dan Bailey for the job before the 2018 season, also has missed kicks of 55, 54, 33, 40, 54, 57, 46, 35 and 47 this season.

He went 29-of-39 last year in his first season with the Cowboys.

  1. @jonathankrobinson424 – The Cowboys special teams were exposed by the Patriots. The Patriots special teams made the Cowboys special teams look an unprepared high school special teams unit. That game also showed Jerry Jones what a well coached team that pays attention to details looks like versus his own Cowboys – which was sloppy and unprepared.

  2. Anyone who thinks Bailey was better isn’t paying attention. Dan Bailey was half injured last year and for the rest of the season he wasn’t very good. He had a mediocre 15-20 season in 2017 with Dallas, and a mediocre 21-28 season with Minnesota in 2018; which is about what Maher did.

What were the Cowboys supposed to do? At least they aren’t trading up to draft kickers and cutting them. It’s apparently hard to find reliable kickers now. Ask New England.

  3. He has missed 10 this year so having a massive leg to kick long field goals is almost moot. There were times when a coach would publicly rip a player to light the proverbial fire under their ace but Garrett isn’t capable of that. More reason that this thing is done.
