Bengals say NFL is investigating the Patriots over “incident” at Sunday’s game

The Bengals say that the league office is investigating after a Patriots employee was seen filming at the Bengals’ game on Sunday.

Toward the end of an otherwise mundane press conference today, Bengals coach Zac Taylor was asked this question by a reporter: “Rumors are out there that the Patriots had a videographer up in the Bengals’ press box area working with the advance scout who was taping video of the Bengals’ sideline. Do you have any reaction to that?”

Taylor answered, “I’m aware that there was an incident but the league is investigating it, so I’ve got no comment.”

Asked if the Patriots’ videographer was doing something outside the normal practices of team scouts, Taylor answered, “I don’t have anything to say about it.”

Asked if he could confirm that the Patriots did have someone in the press box during the Bengals’ game on Sunday, Taylor answered, “I’ve got no comment.”

The Bengals gave Albert Breer a statement saying, “We are aware of the incident, and we are aware it is being investigated by NFL Security. We will have no further comment.”

For their part, the Patriots put out word to multiple reporters that the videographer they sent to Sunday’s Bengals-Browns game was simply shooting one of the regular “Do Your Job” documentary videos that the team features on its website. This episode will be about what an advance scout does while preparing for an upcoming opponent.

The incident will obviously bring comparisons to Spygate, the 2007 controversy over the Patriots taping the Jets’ signals. That resulted in the Patriots being docked a first-round draft pick. It’s hard to believe the Patriots, who are heavily favored to beat the Bengals on Sunday, would risk such a serious sanction by doing something similar to a team they should beat easily, but this is a situation that will undoubtedly raise eyebrows around the NFL this week.

  1. If this is true they should be excluded from the playoffs for 2-4 years. There is no other team in the NFL that should be more aware of NO CHEATING!

  2. Patriots’ advance scout was not filming but being filmed, per a league source. He was being filmed for a feature the team produced called, “Do Your Job.” The video crew was credentialed by the Browns to shoot video in the press box and their PR person was aware, per the source

  3. If the Patriots feel the need to tape the Bengals sideline for an edge, that reflects poorly on the Patriots and their belief in their own players. The Pats shouldn’t need any illicit information, or even the most basic, completely legal, scouting of the Bengals to win handily on Sunday. I say this as a Bengals fan.

  4. Maybe BB is looking at Dalton to replace Brady who likes he is on his way out with being a free agent next year.

  5. I seriously doubt the Patriots OR ANY TEAM would take that risk for a competitive advantage they can have just by getting up in the morning.

Where the Bengals are concerned I can’t even picture any team thinking it was even worth the cost of a plane ticket to send the guy up there.

Debunked in under 5 mins. Nobody cheats to play the Bengals!
    =================================================
Not so fast…a loss could have playoff implications. So don’t be so quick to dismiss the allegation.

  7. If you’re seriously trying to LEARN something from watching the Bungles play that is 100% guaranteed to make you worse.

The Bungles, a franchise so bad that when you find out their origins start in Cleveland all you can say is, “Makes Sense.”

“How to Run a Failure of a Franchise while Bleeding the Community Dry” by Mike Brown, Owner/Operator.

  8. The report also has the Patriots explicitly ASKING FOR PERMISSION and getting credentials to film the scouting piece.

Those sneaky Patriots, getting permission and all that.

Kind of defeats the purpose of it, no?

    Haters gonna hate though. Hilarious.

  9. Yes, it’s hard to imagine the pats would have a standard method of cheating, I mean they are such losers!

So they only cheat in the playoffs now?

  10. If, and I say if something done wasn’t not on the up and up by NE Patriots scouts, Goodell won’t do anything until next season. Punishing the NE Patriots now would mess with revenue streams.

  11. If they were taping the Chiefs or Ravens I’d be suspicious, the Bengals though? Not a change they would risk anything, they could beat the Bungles with 9 guys..

Who are the patriots again? The AFC Road to the Superowl is going through CHARM CITY!!
    —————————-

Actually, at this point in time I have to concede you are correct on that point. Even if I hate it.

  13. I doubt you could learn anything by taping the Bengals. Talk about the most irrelevant and downtrodden pro franchise in the world. The Browns may be a laughingstock still but at least they are finally relevant. The Bengals are just a flatline in the world of sports.

  14. I am a Steelers fan, so I have no fight here but how about we hold off and wait for the NFL to report their findings before everyone makes an opinion one way or another. Too often, people are too quick to jump to conclusions without waiting for facts.

  15. I hate the Pats but I just really don’t care and don’t want this dumb narrative the rest of the season. Please stop

  16. This will end up being nonsense. It is curious the timing given the NFL has a ton of egg on its face for how bad the officials were in the New England – Kansas City game yesterday. Time for a distraction from more bad officiating.

  17. You know, I wouldn’t put anything past the Patriots when it comes to cheating…

But filming the Bengals? What exactly do the Patriots benefit from this? My guess is the marketing staff was making highlight reels knowing that everyone looks a lot better against the Bengals.

Pat’s fans always get defensive about this issue but, why does this type of thing always seem to be surrounding them???

    ———————-

It’s almost as if the Patriots are the most successful team of the last 20 years and have won like 6 SBs and made 9 …

  19. It was probably Goodell’s operative masquerading as a Patriots employee. After yesterday’s game, I believe the league will do anything to screw the Patriots. Goodell wants to end the Patriots dynasty.

The other thing is, you can’t scout the team the week prior anyway. So, there is no way this would be real.

Goodell really pulling out all the stops for framejobs. Whoa.

  21. Hold on… Forget the fact that it’s the Pats doing the video recording.. With the NFL always preaching about integrity, how on EARTH is this “Do Your Job” thing even allowed? Much less, during a live game involving other teams! Record in your own frickin stadium! I’m very surprised the NFL would even take a chance by allowing this…

Don’t worry. They were scouting the Browns.

    **************************************

No Genius. They were scouting the Bengals. Read the story.

  23. Low information and jump to conclusion Americans back at it again. It was nothing more than a film crew, filming an NE scout for a team video production. Bengals PR knew and issued the credential.
Bengals communicatation skills within their organization pretty stellar, like their team.
But, like politics, dims will start believing this too, no matter what facts come out.

  24. The scout was not filming anything, he was being filmed, sitting in the press box doing his job. The Browns cleared the whole thing in advance. It was in the Browns stadium. The Bengals are just being Bengal-ish and the Pats haters are jumping to false conclusions.

  25. “Pat’s fans always get defensive about this issue but, why does this type of thing always seem to be surrounding them???”

Selection bias. 31 teams do this, it’s not a story. One does, and it is.

  26. Ha! Look at the fake outrage.

They had a videographer in their press box, filming with a scout. If you were going to spy, I think I might try a less obvious area.

Such a joke. Only a story because people want to see the Pats dynasty end. Sorry, not over yet.

  27. Listen I have no doubt they did something dumb here. None. Pats fans always have their hands in the cookie jar and looking at the popcorn, but seriously? If you have to spy on the Bengals, for ANY reason (and there is no good one) what is wrong with you?

NE should have let CLE know what they were doing in advance. What a blunder. They deserve the bad press.

Umm, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says the Patriots got pre-game permission from the Browns to shoot…

    ====================================

They did let Cleveland know. The Browns gave the Pats employees press credentials.

  30. They don’t get a pass but this seems pretty innocuous. They cleared it with the Browns PR Dep’t. I mean, we’ll see what’s on the tapes but I think this will end up much ado about nothing.

  31. Could explain the “excellent” defensive performance this year. Once a cheater always a cheater.

  32. For all of those who say ‘oh, the Bengals aren’t even worth wasting the film’, do you think that’s really the way Belichick approaches things?

  33. I’d like to point out that “spygate” was about filming from an unapproved location. It has to be an enclosed structure. They were filming from the press area. It’s an enclosed structure. So, it’s allowed.

  34. I hope the league makes a stink about it. It will be like the completely fake deflategate that got other teams in trouble on the playing field.

What people think is raw meat isn’t.

  35. Pats wanted tape on the Bengals to show it’s players what not to do. Seriously, the NFL now has the tape. Let’s wait to see what’s on it before going nuts.

  36. Let’s see now – 1st we have the NFL Zebras erase 2 TDs from the Patriots last night and giving the Game to KC 2nd add to that another Spy-Gate allegation
Do you know what this all adds up to???

#1 Loss to KC + #2 Spy-Gate allegations = More Lombardi Trophies for Brady

  37. Not a good look for the Pats. For all the Belichick genius labeling one would think he would be on top of this after already losing a 1st round pick for filming another teams signals.

  38. I was just checking out a new camera I was going to give my Son for Christmas…..yeah that’s it! um..er… Well that’s my story!

  39. They could have set the documentary up as a cover for taking video of the sideline. It’s not like the Bengals were up in the guy’s viewfinder. Sure, it’s a long shot and almost certainly not true…except Patriots.

  40. Recording them to show the players….that if they don’t shape up, this is where they’ll end up.

  41. Unbelievable. Pats TV productions get the proper approval. They are doing a segment about an advanced scout on Do Your Job. The NFL ends up with the SD from the camera man.

  42. The crew was credentialed by the Browns to shoot video for a Patriots team feature in the press box and Cleveland’s media relations staff was aware, a league source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The incident in question involved a Patriots scout who was being filmed while working on a team feature called “Do Your Job,” the source said. An official for the Bengals saw a member of the video crew wearing a Patriots shirt and alerted the league, which confiscated the video, according to the source.

If it was any other team the Bengals wouldn’t have given it a second thought.

  43. I hope the league makes a stink about it. It will be like the completely fake deflategate that got other teams in trouble on the playing field.
    ——————————————————–
As I recall, one result of ‘completely fake Deflategate’ was a very real four game suspension for Tom Brady.

  44. By the way, check out the, “do your job”, videos on the Patriots website. They are excellently produced and give a good glimpse into behind the scenes of a championship dynasty. I look forward to the episode about our advanced scout…

  45. Once again, just because cold weather contracts the air in a football, does not prove that they weren’t deflated to minimum acceptable levels prior to games, with the knowledge that the balls would deflate to Brady’s preferred level once the balls were in play.

Just like being credentialed and having permission for one thing, doesn’t prove that they weren’t doing something else too.

These things are not mutually exclusive. For all their crowing about “7th grade science class,” Pats fans are pretty poor at basic logic

    —————————————
And if the league stated this to be the case, the Patriots and Brady would not have been punished because that was acceptable.

  47. I’ve said it before and I will say it again. *Patriots. Never before has a great team been questioned so much for their tactics.

  48. At the very least, it’s horrifyingly tone deaf of the team. They have to know the scrutiny they will be under. If it’s as they say, just tell NFL security and have them tag along as to not raise suspicions. They’ve been caught cheating at least twice already. No one but a homeboy will believe them. BB should be suspended just for the stupidity

The NFL has never made any concession to the existence of the Ideal Gas Law. Their court filings continued to insist that the Patriots’ footballs were “too low”. They maintained the position that the footballs were below 12.5 psi, and somehow that was not allowed. Mind you, the Patriots were also not allowed to use a pump to keep their balls inflated to 12.5 psi.

I don’t fathom how anybody can still give any credence to what the NFL said on this issue. But they know that they have a vast fan base that isn’t particularly well educated. So for selfish reasons, they would rather sell the insinuation that the Patriots were cheaters as opposed to admitting any kind of mistake.

  50. Just like being credentialed and having permission for one thing, doesn’t prove that they weren’t doing something else too.

These things are not mutually exclusive. For all their crowing about “7th grade science class,” Pats fans are pretty poor at basic logic

    —–

Basic logic says “even though there is no evidence of cheating, they might have been cheating in some way that we cannot prove and haven’t thought of yet.”

Do you understand why Patriots’ fans get sick of this? “Lack of evidence is not evidence of lack” is logically true, but it’s poor grounds for defaming people.

  51. They could have set the documentary up as a cover for taking video of the sideline.

Nobody sends in visual signals from the sideline any more. Both the offense and defense have radio helmets.

And, really, if they wanted to get video of the sidelines, they’d buy a ticket and send a guy in with a phone. Cameras are allowed at football games.

Or is your theory that they decided to videotape sidelines, but decided to simultaneously bring attention to themselves by filming a documentary at the same time??

  52. There should be multiple asterisks next to every record this team has set.

And you know what, it’s unfortunate.

Don’t worry folks these naïveté pats fans will navigate their way back to the rocks they came from when the team continues to lose.

  53. Wait….wait………

    There!

I just finished painting the asterisks in my journal and I mumbled “cheater” under my breath while I did it. Then, I folded my arms and made a mean looking frowny face.

    Yup, that oughta do it.

So, have all the championships have been revoked yet?? What do you mean, “That’s enough for tonight Junior, time for bed now?” No fair!!!

  54. This goes back to their first stolen Super Bowl vs. the Rams in 2001.
At that point, Goodell said publicly that he destroyed the blatant cheating evidence because he felt it was in the best interest of the league (i.e.; owners’ profits).

McDaniels got caught filming the 49ers during his pathetically brief tenure as head coach of the Broncos.
Then he was caught again the following week, in London where he foolishly assumed nobody over there would know any better –classy and arrogant!

Next up, 2008 Jets catching them yet again, then The Deflator and his co-worker(whom Brady obviously treated like crap while they helped him unfairly win games) altering his tiny-hands flat footballs, illegal formations, and now caught again spying.

Everone saying why the Bengals, do you really think they’re the only time these legendary cheaters pulled their sleazy crap?

Not sure why people are talking this game so lightly. Have you seen the Patriots play lately? With the way their protection is holding up, a sack/fumble and a pick 6 can easily happen to Brady–dude is already seeing ghosts back there. And he is throwing some UGLY passes. Most QBs would have been sent to the bench by now. The Patriots lost to the Lions last year on the road. This Pats team is even worse. If it weren’t for trick plays and block punts, how would they score? LOL. Dalton will be ready and defenses are just gonna tee off on Brady the rest of the year. My, my this is so lovely. Nice seeing Brady run for his life like other QBs for a change. And of course they cheated! You don’t get called to the principal’s office 5 times for innocence. BB tries to get every edge he can on an opponent, even if he has to cheat. One day, a book is going to coming out about the Patriot’s cheating ways and then we will find out about all the stuff we don’t know. This is going to be good. America duped like Lancelot Armstrong.

    Most over-rated quarterback in football.

Had the same exact receivers that Foles had in December last year (minus Golden Tate but with a much better run game this year) and lost three straight games this season. But, yeah. It’s the receivers. Oh wait, with those receivers Foles threw 4 TDs and over 400 yards against the Texans last year. Oh, wait. It must be the coaches. Hmmm….same coaching staff as last December/January. That can’t be it…

Way to go, Wentz. He put up numbers against the worst team in Football but, hey, keep believing.

I’m waiting to see if Wentz shows up on the injury report this week with a sore arm from patting himself on the back for putting together two good drives against a 2 win team at home.

    ——————————————-

    My Suggestions:

    1: Buy a TV

2: Start actually watching the games.

In case you missed it, the mighty Nick Foles was benched for a rookie.
