Urban Meyer is at FedEx Field on Sunday (and all that that implies)

In two weeks, the coaching carousel will begin to spin. Washington gave it an early shove on Sunday.

Urban Meyer is at FedEx Field. FOX cameras showed him in a box with Alex Smith, who played for Meyer at Utah.

Another former Meyer quarterback — Dwayne Haskins — is currently the starter in Washington.

Meyer has made no effort to hide his interest in coaching the Cowboys. Recently, Dallas owner Jerry Jones denied that the Cowboys have met with Meyer, subtly avoiding (possibly) the distinction between meeting with Meyer and, as reported by Jane Slater of NFL Network, talking to Meyer.

And it could be that Meyer accepted the invitation to attend the Washington game as a message to Jones: If you don’t hire me, maybe Dan Snyder will.

Regardless, it’s looking like the man who twice had to exit college coaching for health reasons is thinking about jumping back in at a higher level. What could go wrong?

  1. It’s so much easier to coach in kiddie ball, where no one questions or authority and everybody just does whatever you say.

    Not so in the pros.

  2. The Eagles have the worst secondary in the NFL . They knew all week that McLaurin was the Redskins big play guy and they let him run right down the middle of the field for an easy touchdown. The Eagles Personnel department needs to learn how to draft the right way.

  3. It would serve him right to get stuck with Dawayne “Bust” Haskins. He is the one who chose him over Joe Burrow and let Burrow leave.

  5. Laugh all you want, but I think the guy would win a Super Bowl in Dallas. Urban is a good coach. Not a great person, but he can coach. The talent being squandered by Garrett is on a monumental level and for all of the complaints of Jerry Jones meddling, he’s allowed his scouts to stack that roster recently. They are just being coached terribly on the level with what Jeff Fisher was doing to the Rams before McVey got that job.

  6. Am I the only hoping the Eagles AND the Cowboys lose today and lose until they play each other where I hope for a tie. I’m hoping the Cowboys get into the playoff with a horrible losing record, host a playoff game to increae the pressure the to change playoff seeding.

  7. If, and that’s a big IF, Meyer goes to DC I’d imagine they’d have to get rid of Bruce Allen, number 1, pay him a TON of money, number 2, and most of all GET SNYDER OUT OF THE WAY. Still won’t believe it unless it happens. If it does, intriguing for Haskins!

Health reasons is just code for “I might be in trouble” or “I want to try something else”

  9. Washington must have learned absolutely nothing from the Spurrier years!

History says the chances of a college HC turning an NFL team around are <5%!

  10. You Meyer haters, and I’m one of them, are underestimating him. My reason for “hating” him are obvious… I had twin sons at Georgia when Meyer was at Florida… then he went to Ohio State, for God’s sake, so I have valid reasons for hating the guy, but I sure do respect his coaching abilities. Just because Spurrier, and Holtz, and Kelly failed in the NFL doesn’t mean this guy would. He’s a cut above all three of those guys. And Pete Carroll hasn’t done too badly in the NFL. Nor did our coach. True, he lost to his brother in the Super Bowl, but he at least GOT to a Super Bowl. My wife is a life-long Redskins fan (went to three of their Super Bowls), so it would be nice to root FOR this guy for a change, and he does have his two Buckeyes playing pretty well for the Skins, so we’ll see. As for Snyder he isn’t any worse then Jones, and maybe not even as bad, so if money talks, go ahead and spend it, Little Dan.
You can’t possibly do any worse than you have already….

  11. The Eagles squeak out a win against another horrible team! WOW how far this team has fallen since that SB win, I’m a firm believer it was Reich that was the driving force behind that strong Eagles team. They should have offered Reich the HC job and shipped Pederson down the road!

  12. Urban is too smart to coach for Washington. But, the Redskins are one of the only teams that regularly spends as much money as he did at OSU and FLA, to bring players in.

You do know it was Carroll’s second go round at being an NFL HC right? My comment of college HC having a <5% chance of turning an NFL team around is for 1st time HC's(sorry I didn't mention it) and I'll go with stats that are that overwhelming every single time, the NFL is a completely different animal and its just one of the reasons over 70% of 1st round QBs are busts!

Would you call someones ALL-IN with only a 5% chance of winning?
