Tom Brady tweets congratulations to Drew Brees . . . and accepts challenge

Getty Images

Drew Brees threw his fourth touchdown of the night and the 541st of his career. He passed Peyton Manning for the all-time record tonight and has left the former Colts and Broncos quarterback in his dust.

Manning had 539 in his career, and, now retired, doesn’t have a chance to regain the record.

But Brees’ record could be broken as soon as Saturday.

That’s when Tom Brady and the Patriots play the Bills.

Brady has 538 career touchdown passes.

The Patriots quarterback tweeted his congratulations to Brees, while accepting the challenge of trying to break Brees’ record.

“Congrats drew!!” Brady wrote. “Couldn’t be more deserving. Passing Peyton in anything is an incredible achievement and your records will be tough to beat! But it’s worth trying.”

Yes and a fat guy in a red suit comes down your basement chimney very soon.

  3. Drew Brees could pull even with Peyton in Super Bowl wins with a win over the Patriots in February. In the process he could pull within 4 of the record set by Tom Brady.

  4. Playoff TD passes:

    Brady 73

    Brees 33

No slight to Brees, a great football player, but Brady is in a class by himself.

  5. Brady of course has thrown most of his TD’s without the benefit of having at least half of his games in a dome. Nothing like mother nature to n battle too.

  6. Chill, Brady. You are going to get intercepted. Quite sure you watched the Bills with their four interceptions vs Steelers.

  7. Brady has 611 touchdown passes. I don’t know why everyone keeps forgetting about the playoffs. Brees now has the most regular season touchdown passes, not the most touchdown passes overall. Brady still has a 50 touchdown advantage on Brees right now.

  8. Playoff TD passes:

No. Manning got that number in less games and attempts than both. He was a much better quarterback than either one. Football is a team sport. If Manning had the top 10 defenses that the Patriots have had he’d have gone 9-0 in those Superbowls. Manning is the GOAT. If you bring the ring argument then you have to say Dilfer is better than Marino.

  9. Congratulations Drew but the GREATEST QB in the history of the NFL is suiting up Saturday. Enjoy it while it lasts. WE ARE ON TO OUR STAIRWAY TO SEVEN!!! 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈

  10. Montana is the best.

While Brady and Manning have operated behind excellent offensive lines, Montana’s line had always been undersized, which is why he moved around so much.

Montana faced alot of great pass rush teams, from the Cowboys, Redskins, Giants, Vikings, Bears, Saints, Rams and Raiders, while Brady only dealt with the Steelers, Ravens and Giants, while Manning had problems with the Patriots rush, along with the Ravens and sometimes the Steelers

While Manning and Brady have lost SBs, Joe Never did…

Hahaha. Brees and the Saints haven’t had the “benefit” of being in the same division with the Dolphins, the Bills (not this years Bills), and Jets for the past decade and a half. I’m sure that would have given him higher numbers.
The whole playing in a dome line is ridiculous. When the Saints play in the dome, so does the other team they’re playing. Teams will always play best in their own home stadium. Learn a little bit more about football and stats before you open your mouth. And there are several domes in the NFL. I don’t see those teams quarterbacks putting up those numbers.

Only looking at totals, based on more games played, means nothing. You have to play in a game to score. But hey, here’s an apples to apples comparison for you.

    Brady – 73 tds / 40 playoff games = 1.8 tds/p-gm

    Manning – 40 tds / 27 playoff games = 1.5 tds/p-gm

    Brees – 33 tds / 15 playoff games = 2.2 tds/p-gm

Think those guys are better at getting benched as a veteran in their careers, though. Brees hasn’t accomplished that feat.

Both Manning and Brees played no less than 50% of their games indoors in perfect passing conditions. Brady played 10% or less. Yet Manning and Brees combined played in fewer SBs than Brady has won. Who did you say the GOAT is again?

  14. Manning is the GOAT. If you bring the ring argument then you have to say Dilfer is better than Marino

Manning also played half his career games INDOORS
If you don’t think that helps , you’re crazy!!!

And the Dilfer better than Marino thing is just dumb.

  15. Arguments can be made for either Manning, Brees, or Brady being the greatest QB ever. Because of how incredible each player is, I fall back on number of Rings to determine who is the GOAT.

My focus is on rooting for Brees to win the Super Bowl to get him 2 Rings. That will solidify him as top5 ever in my HoF rankings. If Brees wins, it will be Brady, Manning, Montana, Elway, Brees. I’ll flop the last 4 around, but Brady stands alone at the top.

Anyone that doesn’t rank Brady #1 is in denial from him suppressing their teams exasperation’s for the last decade and a half.

  16. These guys are both physical freaks- if not in terms of raw athleticism, then in durability- and so highly skilled it can be transcendent just to WATCH… class acts both of them.

Brady does seem to be (finally) hitting the wall while Brees is still peaking. Stay tuned. But appreciate what you are witnessing: excellence.

  17. LOL@ comparisons. Brady has GREATLY benefitted from being coached by the best cheating coach of all time and one of if not the softest divisions that a QB could hope for. Put Brees with the Patriots, he wouldnt have lost those super bowls. BRADY=OVER RATED!!!!

Stop making excuses for Manning. If he played great in the playoffs and his teams still lost I would say you have a point. But Manning played significantly worse in the playoffs then he did during the regular season. That’s not the defenses fault. Even the two Superbowls he won he played like an average QB and his defenses carried him to victory.

  19. Brees and Brady are both stat padders and had to play well into their 40’s to break Manning, who retired at 38 and was never suspended due to cheating.

  20. Records are fun, but lets not anoint anyone. Remember the year Manning set the record at 50? Me neither – lost 20-3 in the playoffs (to NE), how about the year he threw 55 (me neither: lost 43-8 in the SB), how about Mahomes throwing 50? (nope: lost to NE in playoffs), or the highest scoring offense last year? (again: lost to NE – those pesky Pats – 13-3 in the SB). Its a team sport and I am sure those QBs will tell you that.

  21. “Brady has 611 touchdown passes. I don’t know why everyone keeps forgetting about the playoffs”.
    ______

All of the coverage, every single story about it, has emphasized that it is a regular season record. No one is going to forget that even if they tried.

  22. Marino is Namath-like overrated. Manning was all personal greed. If he let the team spread the money around he might have had a chance.

  28. Drew Brees has never been suspended for cheating.

    ====

Neither has Andrew Luck. But his footballs were under the league mandated PSI that night also.

Weird that the NFL had a swat team to test the NE balls but stopped after a few of Indy balls were also illegal.

It did not fit the planned outcome.

  35. Love these Manning/Brees/Brady debates! We’ve been fortunate to watch them compete for so long.

Soon it will be Mahomes/Jackson/Watson although i doubt any of these guys will play into their 40’s.

  36. Brees hasn’t had the benefit of preferential officiating, equipment manipulation and “extra” scouting reports for his entire career. No, instead he had to go a season without his HC for something no once could actually prove.

  37. Brady’s the best QB there’s ever been and he plays for the best Coach and GM there’s ever been. That certainly doesn’t thrill me, as they supplanted Messrs. Starr and Lombardi, respectively, to take those honors.

You mean the AFCE the Pats have swept twice in 19 years? It’s a good thing they play 10 games outside their division to rack up wins to get a #1 seed. Winning 4, 5 or 6 games will not get you that #1 seed. Nice logic fail.

  43. Not only do hypotheticals count, they’re necessary when comparing individual players in the ultimate team sport across 100 years of massive changes and different eras. Since Brady’s claim to being the GOAT is due to team success, it’s imperative to judge how good his team is.

    No? I didn’t think so.

Because they were never measured by the refs before the game, so no one even knows what they started at or if they were the same or lower from the start of the game. And no one ever saw anyone put a needle in any of the balls. All you got is a guy taking a pee before the game.
