Tom Brady not named to Pro Bowl for first time since 2008

Getty Images

The Patriots had only three Pro Bowlers, and Tom Brady was not one of them. It’s been a long time since that was the case.

The last time Brady wasn’t chosen to the Pro Bowl roster was in 2008, the year he suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week One. Brady also wasn’t chosen to the Pro Bowl in 2002, 2003 and 2006, but other than that he had been chosen in every year that he was the Patriots’ starting quarterback.

Brady probably isn’t too broken up about not being chosen, seeing as he hasn’t actually played in a Pro Bowl since 2005. Some years he misses because he’s preparing for the Super Bowl the next week, while other years he chooses not to attend. It’s still possible that Brady could go to the Pro Bowl as an alternate, but it’s highly unlikely he’d accept that invitation.

Brady has been named to the Pro Bowl 14 times, an NFL record he shares with Peyton Manning, Tony Gonzalez, Bruce Matthews and Merlin Olsen. If he had been chosen this year, he would have broken the record.

The AFC Pro Bowl quarterbacks are Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson.

  1. No doubt that he’s one of the GOATs, but he has not had a great season. Age is starting to catch up with him. Father time has never lost.

  2. OH NO!!!!

Does a man with 9 SB appearances and 6 wins actually care about a popularity contest?

Hope he doesn’t take it out on Buffalo Saturday.

    Really? Pro Bowl? Who cares!

  3. Maybe he’s got some kind of phobia about the pro bowl. A day or so after they returned from the 2005 pro bowl, Tedy Bruschi had a stroke and Brady hasn’t gone back since. Oddly enough, athletes tend to be highly superstitious.

  4. …and The Great One will be the first to tell you “ain’t no thang”

Just pray He doesn’t use it for motivation.

  5. I am sure that this will really ruin Tom’s day. It is always fun to notice how many more players from other teams get represented at the pro bowl than the Patriots. This happens annually. Why is this? One exclamation is that the Patriots are hated and fans and players, who vote, get a chance to snub them in this way.
Another, more plausible explanation, is that the Patriots play more team football, where the emphasis is on each player fulfilling his role, rather than on flashy, individual stars. Brady, himself still gets called “ Two yard Tom” and a “ game manager”, in spite of his unparalleled success. Maybe on some level the patriots don’t get selected to the pro bowl, because deep down the fans and players know that New England probably won’t be sending thier guys to the game because of a more pressing commitment the following week.
In the 17 years that Brady has played a quarterback for the Patriots, they have gone to the Super Bowl 9 times. In Wesley that same period, Drew Brees has gone once.
Peyton Manning 4 times, Aaron Rodgers once, Big Ben 3, Eli twice, Russell Wilson twice, and the three wunderrkind have a combined 1-3 postseason record so far.

  6. Tom Brady doesn’t give a damn about Pro Bowls when he’s hoisting the Lombardi trophy every other year.

  7. An alternate? Really? His production this year is far from Pro Bowl quality, and the only writers/TV hosts I have seen acknowledge it is Kurt Warner and Michael Irving. At some point you have to recognize that Father Time is taking his cut. Great career but Brady is not very good at this stage of his career, and nothing BB can do is going to change that.

  8. which means trolls will try cranking Patriots fans by saying Brady has fallen off a cliff and is done, and the same people will again try cranking Patriots fans if Brady signs elsewhere as a free agent (for some bizarre reason we’ll get cranked for not signing a guy THEY say is done).

I mean, they’re already doing it.

  9. No time for individual accolades. This year’s Patriots is going to have to be a true team to make any noise in January. Go Patriots!

  10. Fair is fair. I am the biggest Tom Brady fan you will ever know ( here come the thumbs down clicks)But the truth is the truth… The 3 guys named ahead of him are having better years.

It is all good. Tom has not played up to his own level of excellence this year because of the cast around him. (give him any of those other QB’s WR’s and RB’s and it is a different story). Had Gordan played out as hoped, and AB toed the line with social media, (the Bain of this younger generation) the Starting center for 3 super bowls not gone down before the season started, the All- pro Fullback not gone down in preseason, and Gronk not retired… well who knows what could have been….. Tom will play 2 more years if we don’t make it to the super bowl this year ( I am being a realist here)So he still has a chance to break the record.

  11. Pats fan here…. why would he be chosen when there are so many other QB’s playing so well and Tom is not having a great season… Besides, Tom doesn’t play for Pro Bowl selections, he plays for Lombardi’s and there just may be one more for him if they can get their act together

  12. I thought Belicheat was such a savant as a g.m., he has done nothing to help out his offense except give up a 2nd round pick for an average receiver in Sanu, the Pats will be out of the playoffs real quick this season.

  13. Man, that is a shame…this is the year Brady was planning to take a break from helping the Pats prepare to face the Saints in the Super Bowl the following week, and actually showing up to play in the Pro Bowl. [/sarcasm]

  14. Brady certainly has not had a pro bowl quality season, but I think it is related to the deficiencies of the offensive line (due to injury) and losing fullback James Devlin (another key blocker) to IR. Not having a half decent Tight End to replace Gronk did not help matters.

I suspect that he does not want to go down this way. If the Patriots do not make it to the Championship this season, he will be more motivated than ever next year.

  15. >> Father Time is taking his cut. Great career but Brady is not very good at this >> stage of his career, and nothing BB can do is going to change that.

I disagree. Not necessarily about father time, but the part about Brady being done and BB unable to help him. I have seen many no-name QBs over the years look like pro-bowlers when given enough time to throw. A QB like Brady has an incredible amount of experience and talent, even in decline. If BB gave him better protection and better receivers, I see him returning to form somewhat even as his career winds its way to the final curtain call. Also, given the cast of characters around him, I hesitate to put too much emphasis on declining ability. Clearly he is older and his performance this season has been not great, but how much is due to him and how much is related to a changing cast of characters around him?

  16. Who are you going to snub if you choose Brady?
    Jackson? Mahomes? Watson?
All 3 are much better than Brady at this point.

Yeah he could and he tried.
The problem isn’t Brady it’s the lack of weapons
Other than JE no other WR can create separation
If AB was still on the team the offense and Brady would look very different.

  18. No problem…..its OK to pass the torch to these new flavor of the year QBs. Two years ago it was Watson before he got injured. Last year was Mahomes. This year Lamar. Next year, who knows.

Take the entire list of Pro Bowlers combined and they haven’t achieved what Brady has in his career.

  19. Eh, so what? His numbers don’t justify it this year, this team isn’t currently built to send offensive players to the Pro Bowl.

The defense, however, is built to last in the playoffs, so if the offense does kick it up a couple notches things could get quite interesting. Getting Harry more involved may pay dividends by the time the season ends.

    a very good cast, actually

brady won’t use half of it

  21. Ah, the haters’ salt is strong today! As for production it’s not Brady’s age. The one sure way to hinder him was always pressure up the middle, and the o-line’s been heavily patched up all year. That also hurts the run game, further hit by the loss of their fullback (and Gronk as blocker). So Brady’s left trying to get rid of it quick to mostly new guys (or to a doubled, walking-wounded Edelman). He’s managed it fantastically really, and into the playoffs for a record 11th straight year. The all time record holder in yards, TDs, titles, and salt generation.

  22. i’m sure he is all heartbroken about it sitting in his mansion with his supermodel wife and his millions upon millions of dollars.

How will he ever recover from this…

  23. Riggo08…slight correction to your post. TB is not “one of the GOATs”…he is, without a doubt, THE GOAT. There, I fixed it for you…

  24. Time for Grampa to grow and step aside to let the kids play…..I know it will break the fanboys egos as they deny its importance…..nothing to see here.

  25. Yes, it probably is time to start thinking about moving to Garoppolo — oh wait a minute I forgot they gave him away!!!
Well, I don’t know, is it too late for them to figure a way out to cheat the system and get Tommy in?

  26. Hell hath no fury like a pissed off Brady. Cue the clutch laser passes and championship leadership. The team will rally around the legend as usual. Lamar will get all the attention and Brady will get the ring and laugh in all your faces.

Seen this movie before. Always leads to a championship glory in New England.

Better bring your AAA game or you will get humiliated on the field. Patriots are hell bent and on a mission now to win a seventh title. And then all of New England over 6 states will revel in the Dynasty making excuse makers eat their own words.

On to a seventh title and historical glory.

    Jackson > Brady

    —————————

Enjoy Jackson’s 5 year long career.

    ————————-

It will probably be less than that based on history. He’ll probably get hurt here soon. Baltimore is whistling past the graveyard thinking their just going to coast to the SB in all of their disgusting, cheating arrogance.

  28. Jackson, Mahomes, Watson…….VS Brady
This story reminds me of another one I know many of you should be familiar with……
THE TURTLE & THE HAIR…… remember who ended up winning that race??!!!

  29. Hey Patriots’ fans! Gillette stadium just expanded its concession offerings. On Saturday, you’ll be able to enjoy Sour Grape Ale, Sour Grape Mash Whiskey, Sour grape wine, Sour grape ice cream, Sour grape soda, and … wait for it … SOUR GRAPES!

  30. You can throw take all the shots you want, VAsteeler…in that respect you are a one trick pony like the rest of the haters that flock to Patriots articles…but you have no shot of even putting a tiny scratch on the bulletproof memories that the full generation run of excellence and dominance that we have enjoyed. You can try, but just know that you are shooting blanks.

  31. Brady has accomplished more than most of the chosen ones ever will. I don’t think he’s losing any sleep over this. He’d be the first to say that he didn’t earn it.

  32. Love Tom Brady (& the Patriots, Bill Belichick).

But (as usual) there is no controversy – sports has a way of telling the truth #Scoreboard

The QB’s chosen over him have played better – Lamar is amazing, so is Mahomes.

The NFL is in great shape on the field – the players and coaches are doing amazing stuff.

Great call on the Pro-Bowl rosters.

  33. Is anyone surprised? He’s at the end of his career – and while still a great QB that all but a handful of teams would take in a heartbeat, he’s by no means a GREAT QB as in years past. There’s no shame in that, of course. Just reality. You either go out on top with plenty of gas left in the tank (think Jim Brown, Barry Sanders), or you… well, you run out of gas.

    Hahaha…

That “karma“ You reference must have been hibernating for a loooooong time and really not doing its job. No one even recognizes him around here.

if you’ve been paying attention even a little, you’d notice that Brady never has cared one lick about meaningless accolades, even as he’s racked up more than anyone. There’s only been one trophy worth competing for in New England.

    Enjoy your Pro Bowl.

  35. I think this will bug him. He’s a competitive guy and what does he have left to play for?
Besides Super Bowl rings which the Patriots Offense is really not close to be being back to.
He’s got the money all that’s left is stats. One away from the Pro Bowl record. He should have had the TD record first. He won’t catch Brees now. Unless the the Patriots can promise to bring in more help for him next season I don’t think he will be back in New England next year. He is still the best player in Patriots History so if he leaves and then come back to retire in 2 or 3 years he will be welcomed back like it was nothing.

    ————-
    Why so cranky?

  38. Brady will pretend this doesn’t bother him but it really does. He knows his game is declining and the homers will say “well he doesn’t have help hurrr duur” Meanwhile throughout his career the Patties fanboys kept spewing the “Brady makes everyone look like a pro bowler” narrative. So which is it?

  39. Someone tell Bill that old and slow is no way to run an NFL roster.
Can’t do it with just brains when you have no WR talent and your QB can’t throw beyond 10 yards.

Sure NE has lots of wins over the bad teams like the Jets, Steelers, Dolphins, etc. But KC, Baltimore and Houston all exposed the slow and unathletic NE defense.

  40. Time is undefeated.
Brady has had a run that will probably not be approached in the next 50 years.
    Or longer.

He’s still better then 20 or so starting QB’s

  41. Haters tears are flowing again. TB12 definitely doesn’t have the numbers of Jackson or Mahomes this season. But does anyone here with even half a brain think that Mahomes/Jackson would have their team at 11-3 with Ryan Izzo at TE, and rookie Jakobi Meyers at WR? Oh, almost forgot the very forgettable Phillip Dorsett.

No one has done more with less than Brady. Ever.

  42. Fair is fair. I am the biggest Tom Brady fan you will ever know ( here come the thumbs down clicks)But the truth is the truth… The 3 guys named ahead of him are having better years.

Tom will play 2 more years if we don’t make it to the super bowl this year ( I am being a realist here)So he still has a chance to break the record.

I can’t give you a thumbs down for being his fan. I’m a huge Michigan fan and if he was in any other division I’d root for him in some level. We all like who
We like. If I grew up in NE I’d be a fan too. But to imply that this is entirely on his supporting cast is a little silly. While agree it’s not great, his thing was always, doesn’t matter who you surround him with. That’s not happening here. I don’t want to say he’s not very good right now, but he’s definitely not Tom Brady this year. He’s approaching the cliff but no, he hasn’t fallen off yet.

He’s needs to be decent this week because right now buffalos D is playing as well as anyone in the league the past 5-6 weeks. I have no doubt the D fir NE will keep them in the game.

It’s not completely impossible for NE to lose both games. It’s unlikely but not impossible. I think they beat us in a very close game just because we can’t seem to ever win against them so I’m
Glad we locked up a playoff spot. Still a year away from really challenging for the division. But stay tuned, I don’t think the East is going to be a Gimme much longer… it’s been long enough lol

  43. Brady’s stats are terrible this year and he shouldn’t be on pro bowl but I highly doubt he cares. All the haters bashing him obviously have not paid much attention to what’s caused his terrible season. If you start at 100 percent of what’s wrong with the Patriots season, he prolly is to blame at about 5 percent. Hell, with the Pats defense he can still get this squad to the SB, much to the dismay of the haters. Regular season means nothing once the playoffs begin.

  44. It is an interesting tidbit to note, but he certainly has not played well enough this season to warrant going. And, I am sure he doesn’t really care about it anyway.

  45. He is still the GOAT, but don’t stay too long TB. I’m old enough to remember Johnny Unitas playing his last year with the Chargers – enough to make you cry.

  46. Yeah he could and he tried.
The problem isn’t Brady it’s the lack of weapons
Other than JE no other WR can create separation
If AB was still on the team the offense and Brady would look very different.
    —————————————-
No. No. No. Yours is a false narrative.

All we have heard for 20 years is how Brady can take three nobodies and turn them into All-Pro WRs. And he has done exactly that for 19 years.

Now suddenly it’s not Tom’s fault, its because he lacks weapons. You don’t get it both ways.

So which is it? Can he take three nobodies and make them all-pros or is he not so good and really needs help?

  47. He’s lasted longer than even possible, but its coming to a close.

No shame in the downfall at that age, congrats on a great HOF career.

  48. Brady is doing a fair job managing the offense. He’s not forcing balls, not fumbling, not throwing too many picks. The strong D is getting the offense more possessions, so Brady leads receivers to limit picks, throws the ball away a lot rather than scramble (not his forte). Game management, as the young guys get in sync. Hopefully, they are successful enough on O and the D formidable enough that they can continue to win. Will they get it together by January? Time will tell. The NE D has seen the Ravens, KC, Texans, and the Bills twice. Second (or third) time’s often a charm. Should be an interesting playoffs.

Ever.

Those are all guys who were signed, traded for or drafted by the hoodie. So he is to blame for the offensive talent.
The thing is that you said. No one had done more with less . Until this year. He’s making some timely plays but it’s the defense that’s keeping them at where they are at.

Without the D/ ST they don’t beat Buffalo in game 1. His rating is under 90. He’s not falling off the cliff yet but he’s approaching. That being said, he’s still very serviceable and top 10-15 qb. I think this off-season is perhaps the most interesting of this 20 year run. Does BB want to try to win without him?

Get ready pats fans because this ride will eventually come to an end. You won’t go 20 years between playoff teams or anything but I don’t think after this year the division is a gimme anymore and that’s with Brady and BB

  50. It’s only fair. He and the offense simply haven’t played all that well. This will only fuel him even more.

I’m surprised he didn’t get selected in 2006 because I think that’s one of his best seasons, along with 2013, consider what he had to work with in bunch of no name receivers and he still took them to the AFCCC and almost made it back to the Super Bowl. That was also the year he handed the Bears, a team I root for, one of the few defeats and gave a memorable game when he juked Brian Urlacher on a run! I saw something special and that’s when I started following Brady and the Patriots, a team unlike any other since the 80’s 49ers.

Brady is at his most entertaining best when he’s back against the wall and has to come up with something to win games. This season may or may not be that kind of year. The guy has had a hell of a career!

  51. Does Brady really care? I’d be willing to bet this weeks paycheck he doesn’t he’s getting ready for this weeks game, the holidays and post season. He could care less.

  52. the GOAT is old now and wounded. But he is still alive, calculating how he can ambush his younger, stronger challengers. All of them are content to let someone else try to drive a stake in the giant heart of the most dangerous animal in the playoffs.

    ——–

In other news, Brady misses pro bowl for first type in 10 years.

  54. “He’s no longer playing football at a high level.”

Actually he is. The problem is not Brady, mainly its the Oline which is one of the worst couple he’s ever had in front of him.

  55. At this rate, if the Patriots release Brady after the season, there won’t be many teams lining up for his services.

  56. Drew Brees>Tom Brady
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________

Took 18 years, but that may finally be an accurate statement. Remember, at age 40 Brady won an MVP and threw for over 500 yards in the SB. So far it looks like Brees is already 0-1

  57. The Pro Bowl is a joke anyway. Who cares? All Pro is a far more prestigious honor and it doesn’t come with an invitation to a ridiculous dog ‘n’ pony show that no one cares about.

  58. Well, makes sense. To his credit, he seriously had a couple of nice long runs, separated by the injury year.

  59. You do realize that one day TB12 will have to leave the game. He is playing just Peyton in his last year. Tom, please be like Manning and retire; spare us another year of awful QB play. I’m sick of seeing you throw passes 10 yards away from the receiver.

  60. Brees has better playoff stats
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________

Brees also has 59 more career INTs….a 33% increase over Brady. Yikes

  61. The traffic in commenting on Brady, in any context, reminds me of the traffic after it was learned he destroyed his phone (the biggest ‘so what?’ In history.) Are haters really that bothered – all the live-long day?

  62. Go back and read the PFT threads from last year. Many haters were relishing the end of Brady and the Patriots because the lost two straight games.

They were sure first the Chargers, then the Chiefs, and finally the Rams were not only going to beat NE, they were going to embarrass them. Hiw did that work out?

If Brady and Belichick get a buy all hater bets are off.

  63. “Brees has better playoff stats”

If he does its because of a far smaller sample. Brady has more than 2 full seasons of playoffs and Super Bowl games.

  64. Brady is fine. His receivers have the most drops in the league, are 28th in yac, he has the most throwaways (nobody open) and a shoddy OL.

His numbers will improve a lot next year, somewhere else.

  65. Drew Brees the GOAT ? My how Saints fans are delusional

Brady 611 TD and six rings
Brees 574 TD and 1 ring

Every story about GOAT begins with Brady the LEGEND.
You think Brees ever comes back from 28-3 in SB. He couldn’t even beat Falcons out for division title that year. LMFAO

    ——————-

What does this even mean? Do you think the Pats have rules changed for them in their favor? My goodness…

  67. The Colts have also not been named to the playoffs for the first time since, uh, 2017. What a run you guys.

  68. Has Drew Brees ever won an important/playoff game away from NO?

He looks like RoboQB at home but for away playoff games he looks like a mix of Mark Sanchez and Matt Leinart. WEAK.

Drew, show you have some game outside of your home stadium and maybe fans outside of Louisiana will respect/fear you and the Aints.

TN is going to kick the Saints tails all the way to Louisiana this weekend

  69. So which is it? Can he take three nobodies and make them all-pros or is he not so good and really needs help?
    +++

He has taken WR and made them better. But-he has to have at least one playmaker on the field in order to do that. He does not have one. Not one with JE hurt.

Have you seen how many passes were hit in the hands of his TE and WR and were dropped?

Have you seen how his O line does not protect him?

He is not Superman. He is just great.

  70. Good, for once he won’t need to make an excuse for why he doesn’t want to attend that waste of time.

  71. Father Tiime is undefeated, that’s true.
What is also true is that Brady has fought back against Father Time better and more successfully than anyone else ever.
