Lamar Jackson and other key starters to sit out Ravens’ finale vs. Steelers

The Ravens have already clinched home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs, and as a result they’ll play it safe in Week 17.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh said today that quarterback Lamar Jackson and other key starters will sit out Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Steelers.

Other Ravens who will sit out on Sunday include guard Marshal Yanda, running back Mark Ingram, safety Earl Thomas and defensive tackle Brandon Williams.

That’s a major gift to the Steelers, who remain in the AFC wild card hunt. It’s also a blow to the Raiders, who need a Steelers loss to make the playoffs.

Robert Griffin III will start at quarterback for the Ravens on Sunday. It will be the first start for RGIII since 2016, when he started five games for the Browns.

  1. Audition for RG3! You know there will be at least one team trying to replicate what the Ravens are doing this offseason.

It won’t work– but they will try!

  2. Integrity of the game? Baltimore has been playing fast and loose with the positional integrity of their so-called QB having rushed nearly an average of 10 times per game when the next closest career rushing QB is averaging six rushes per game (Wilson in Seattle). Baltimore has built a house of cards around their gaming of the system seeking QB levels of protection for their throwing running back.

  3. Damn. That sucks. I hope their back-ups are really good because I need the Steelers to lose for my Raiders to have a shot at a wild card.

  4. “So much for the integrity of the game”
    __________

Actually the integrity of the game, specifically the playoffs, would be diminished by having Lamar and the others suffer needless injury in a meaningless setting.

Well maybe the other teams should have taken care of their business before we reached week 17 and maybe they could have rested some of their players. Actions have consequences.

  6. I hear the Pats will be filming for a Do Your Job segment on peanut vendors who work the section behind the Ravens bench.

  7. The Ravens have no obligation to play their starters and after Ingram went down it’s better to be safe. For any team upset the Ravens are resting key starters, then they should have done better in the regular season so that they would not have to rely on another team helping them in any way.

  8. All AFC teams should root for the injured steelers to make the playoffs ahead of the Titans who have been hot.

  9. If you don’t think the ravens can still whoop the steelers with Rg3 you’ve not been paying attention

“So much for the integrity of the game”
    —————————————-

Most of the players being rested have been on the injury report in recent weeks.

  11. Sometimes the rest takes a team out of the winning zone they were in, and when it comes time to play again, it’s like they are almost starting from scratch. Rest and bye weeks work against some teams, and others get their second wind from it.

  12. Ravens care much more about being healthy for the playoffs than your ‘integrity of the game’ arguments. They aren’t resting starters in week 10 or something.

Their backups are more than capable, especially at home. Ravens will still win.

  14. Im interested in seeing what RG3 can do with an actual gameplan.. He’s look putrid the few times he’s come in during mop up time.. but they were also killing the clock.

No football for 3 weeks. I’ve seen that work out not so good. Fingers crossed!

Harbaugh’s record in week 1 and post byes are impressive. They’ll be fine. They won the SB the last time they rested starters in week 17.

  16. This is a mockery of the game. Either you play the games or you forfeit them. You don’t get to selectively pick and choose which games you risk your players. I think teams that do this that stand to have a home field advantage should forfeit that advantage in the first game. Not fair to the teams who risk all of their players to get into the playoffs.

  17. All AFC teams should root for the injured steelers to make the playoffs ahead of the Titans who have been hot.

The “hot team”, who just lost to the saints yesterday??? That hot team????

  18. It does not matter. The Steelers’ offense will be lucky to put up 13 points and the Steelers’ defense could be without Dupree and Heyward. As a Steelers fan I would rather see the Titans play in Kansas City or New England in the first round of the playoffs who may actually have a chance. If by chance the Steelers beat the Ravens and get in because the Titans lose, they will not be able to keep up with Kansas City and they cannot ever beat New England.

  19. Since 2008, Ravens are 9-2 coming off their bye week. Harbaugh is 15-2 in September (aka, getting going from not going all out in the preseason).

    They’ll be fine.

  20. I think the Ravens still have a great chance to win this game. The team as a whole is solid, if Bobby Griff can pull off a few plays here and there then they should win.

Guys – the Steelers just lost to the Jets 17-10. I think an RGIII led Ravens is still better than the Jets.

Tell that to the NBA – their regular season is the biggest joke in all of sports. Call it load management.

  22. Last time we had rest for the playoffs we lost to Payton led colts team who didn’t score a touchdown in the game. 15-6 loss at Home with Air McNair at the helm. 13-3 I don’t like the rest part but I understand.

  23. They should at least start him, and run a play so it keeps any consecutive game streak in play.

  24. Tony Dungy tried this strategy and it backfired for the Colts. Apparently John Harbaugh believes he is smarter than everyone else.

What you say makes not sense. They are playing the game, and every week every team gets to choose who they are going to play that week. Nobody said they weren’t going to try and win the game, they are just doing it with some other players. They can’t sit every starter, but they can limit their snaps.

  26. Another reason to sit Jackson is to prevent, however small, the possibility of the Steelers coming up with, and giving the rest of the league, a blueprint for slowing him down.

  27. im personally not a fan of resting guys. you play to win the game. you already have a buy; too much time off for a hot team like baltimore can really backfire.

  28. Tb12 never sat out. I’ll take a pliable, intelligent guy like tb12 over a mumbling, sitting out guy like Jackson any day of the week. John harbaugh just signed his own pink slip

  29. As a Steelers fan they don’t deserve to get in the playoffs after losing to the Jets. They would be one and done anyway. The defense is awesome, but the offense is a mess. The offensive line is very good, but the skill players are not. Conner is a backup or change of pace at best, JuJu is not a #1 and neither QB is a starter. The only reason they won games is the defense. Look at both QB stats, that tells the story.

  30. LJ’s stat line Week 5 in their OT win at Pittsburgh

    19-28
    161 yards passing
    71 yards rushing
    I TD, 3 INTs
    5 sacks
    54.9 Passer Rating

I’d say it’s smart to sit him against the team leading in takeaways and sacks.

  31. Love the Raven fans calling out the Lamar hate by everyone except their. own fans who booed him off the field last year during the playoffs.. He was horrible and the defenses he sees come playoffs will have different game plans. Ravens fans are such frauds. Goodluck winning in the playoffs with this style QB. When the defenses force him to beat you from the pocket he will crumble.. FACTS. Enjoy the 3 week layoff and early exit

  32. Name the last team to rest starters…then Win the Superbowl…but like the Iggles getting rid of the wrong QB…you can’t fix stupid…Amazing teams try to be the exception to the rule…insteada obiding by it…

  33. The chances of Lamar Jax getting hurt are high every game. Enjoy the ride Ravens fans, QBs who run 10+ times a game will get killed eventually as defenses see tape. He’ll be limping out of many gms in the very near future.

  34. It’s a deep Ravens team and RGIII can still run an offense. Given the Steelers current issues at QB and lack of weapons, compared to their previous arsenal, and the fact that its in Baltimore, it’s no gimme. Definitely worth watching.

  35. The smart decision after seeing Ingram get banged up on Sunday. Jackson already has league MVP locked up, may as well keep your key starters healthy and get your back ups much needed reps. Will say this though, it would be hilarious if Baltimore’s back ups were good enough to effectively knock the Pittsburgh’s starters out of playoff contention.

  36. “Harbaugh Has ‘No Regrets’ After Ravens Fans Call For His Firing After Loss To Steelers.” – CBS affiliate headline on November 4, 2018 at 5:40 pm.

So lets not pretend that what is happening now was accepted in it’s infancy by the Ravens fans.

  37. Dumb topic really. Nothing can be proven. Maybe you just lost the game, rest or no rest. But if Lamar plays and he gets hurt, then what? Football is a violent game, take the rest when you can get it. If rest is not needed, then forfeit your bye week!

How about the Colts were just better?

  39. So, the Ravens had a slow start against the Browns. If the game after resting players is like that, 99% would say see, it’s because they rested players, but no one rested before the Browns. It’s football, sometimes you start fast and sometimes you don’t.

  40. Let me add, the Patriots and their fans do not fear the Ravens. The Ravens are the better team. They’ve proven it. It doesn’t mean they can’t be beaten. You can make the argument that of the four remaining teams in the Conference Championships last year that the Patriots were inferior to all, yet…

  41. I am sure Houston will be sitting some players too. So it’s probably all a moot point as far as the Titans are concerned. If it were a win and your in for the Steelers it would be a bigger story. I am a Steelers fan and would love to see my team make it just to say they made it. Truth is though, without a developed quarterback to start for the Steelers, the Titans would better represent the AFC. Ryan T. has been balling legitimately.
