Report: Kirk Cousins, other starters to sit for Vikings Sunday

Getty Images

The Vikings are booked for the sixth seed in the NFC playoffs whether they win, lose or tie their game against the Bears on Sunday and it appears they will be taking the cautious approach with several starters as a result.

Courtney Cronin of ESPN reports that the team is expected to sit Kirk Cousins for the game. Sean Mannion would make the second start of his career. His first came under similar circumstances for the Rams in Week 17 of the 2017 season.

Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said earlier this week that he hadn’t made any call, but the fact that Minnesota’s locked into its spot makes it unsurprising that they’d opt to focus on planning for the postseason.

Cronin doesn’t name any other names, but one imagines that running back Dalvin Cook, linebacker Eric Kendricks and any other player with an injury concern would be on the bench to rest up ahead of the team’s road trip in the Wild Card round.

  1. With that terrible offensive line Cousins is going to last only one more game anyways. Better for it to be the 3rd loss in a row rather than the 2nd to the lowly bears.

  2. Vikings in the playoffs on the road…
We will see how much trouble out-of-town Cousins can get in.

  3. When a team gets a first round bye, everyone celebrates. Yet when a lower ranked playoff team gets a “bye” due to circumstance everyone thinks the team should play to not be “rusty”. Makes ZERO sense.

When you get an opportunity for a week off before the playoffs YOU TAKE IT! well done Zimmer. sit out ALL starters and treat it like a 1st round bye

  4. You say minisoda is “planning for the postseason.” And just what are they going to plan this weekend that’s going to change that gives them an edge that they wouldn’t have if they play cousins this Sunday? I guess last Sunday’s game wasn’t embarrassing enough so they decided to shelve him this weekend to ensure he’s ready to add to they’re embarrassment in the playoffs.

  5. If Cook is healthy, even Mattison to some extent. Then teams could be easily be beat by the Vikings.

  6. Packer trolls going for the low hanging fruit, instead of talking football. Not surprising.

This is obviously an easy call for Zim. I’d also try 1-2 different guys on that O-line so you can be prepared for fresh bodies come playoff time. I’d probably sit Diggs and Thielen, as well as Smith and Barr and Waynes. Rhodes can play. Who cares if he gets hurt.

Oh, and I’d take the under on this game. 13-9 sounds about right. Don’t care who has the 13.

  7. Dumb.
This is again, another bad move from a coach who is clearly ill equipped to be a successful coach in this league.

I wouldn’t hesitate to sit anyone that’s legitimately injured or still pretty banged up, but is this seriously how you want to enter the postseason?
With that bad look, ugly loss, and utter disappointment from last Monday night, you would think they would want to turn the corner and leave the 2019 season on a successful finish.
Just terrible for team morale, confidence and mindset.
    But, oh so predictable.

With a week to go until the tournament starts, instead of cruising into the playoffs in style and on a high note, they’ve decided to push this limp ‘79, violet colored, Pinto into the race.
Best of luck with all that.

  8. This is what I call the “poor man” bye… I would expect the organization will reimburse the person who purchased a ticket to see the best possible product on the field. If not they should be sued for fraud…..

  9. Well for us season ticket holders we get to pay full price to see the scrubs play… WONDERFUL.I will watch at home with a 12 pack of beer.

They also sat Monday night against the Packers.

    They sure did.
Reminded me of other sit-outs recently, like when the Niners or Saints hosted the Falcons, or the Seahawks hosted the Cardinals. How’d the Packers handle the Niners, Chargers?

  11. “How’d the Packers handle the Niners, Chargers?”

That will be irrelevant once Green Bay obtains home field advantage throughout the playoffs this weekend.

Dude! I totally agree with you. Then again. In the same way one can pay too much for
a crappy car…you get what you paid for. Enjoy the brews.

  13. Rest up for the one game post season then rest again till next year. I’m a Vikings fan, but also a realist.

  14. Honest question: Can anyone show me where a sixth seed who was already under-performing, rest starters in Week 17 and suddenly performs well in the playoffs? I don’t recall.

FAKE NEWS! If the Packers would have won at least one of the two Rodgers wouldn’t be playing Sunday and home field would have been sewn up.You really think the Panthers are going to beat the Saints and the 9ers are gonna to lose to Seattle? Its only irrelevant because you couldn’t beat the Chargers and the 9ers. Your team needs home field worse than anyone in the NFC. You don’t’ want your squad go to the west coast because your team hasn’t won out there for like 4 years. You just beat a team without two starting RBs and now all of a sudden you think your defense is Super Bowl caliber? Your offense had 3 turnover Monday night. Not every team is the Vikings and gonna only get 10 points.

  16. I wouldnt treat as a bye, more like a preseason game…. get the players to remove that taste from MNF out of their mouth, and have some confidence going forward. A quarter heck even a drive or two.

  17. This is not a shot at the Vikings. This is a general statement on my part. I do not think resting starters is a good thing for any playoff bound team ever.

Man, you play them and let the chips fall. This is playoff football now and “focus” and being in sync are vital.

My opinion is that this is a mistake. If I’m wrong, give me examples … educate me
    .

  18. Your offense had 3 turnover Monday night. Not every team is the Vikings and gonna only get 10 points.
    _________

The Packers arent always gonna turn it over 3 times in a game either.

One thing the defense done was bend and not break holding teams to FG tries, the offense needs to have a good possesion and keep them off the field to rest, and motnturn the all over. As for you say all this about the Packers not beating the 9rs and chargers. Tell me how many wins you had GB and their rookie coach penciled in for at the start of the season. I promise they have more than you expected, more than most people expected even the Packer faithful. You’re right the Packers have things to work on, and hopefully they do and get some momentum going into the playoffs, but they are still learning all the wrinkles on offense, it wont be hardwired into their brains until midway next season at the earliest.

Also Seattle beat SF on the road, amd remember the 9ers lost to Atl too…. any team can have a stinker through out the course of a season.

  19. What ever happened to thinking about the fans who bought tickets to see the best players on the field ? Vikings should refund ALL PROCEEDS from this game if they sit any starters ! And whomever has the broadcast rights to this game should also be due a refund of all or part of their contract with the league !

Anytime a team purposely puts out a inferior product or team ON PURPOSE, should automatically lose and proceeds from the game and loose a first round draft pick !

Fans or anyone else who paid to see a team put out their best players but said team didn’t on purpose should be allowed to file a class action suit against the league for fraud !!!!

So our team will be 10-6? Once we lose the playoff game we’ll be 18-18-1 the last two years paying a QB 84 Million dollars?

Thanks, Rick. You’re a real magician.
    ——————————————————————————————

Your math isn’t very good … IF we lose sunday and the first round they would be 18-14-1…. and since when does it come down to one player? The defense overall has regressed over the past 2 seasons and so has the offensive line…

  21. I find it odd that a team that has just been swept by the Packers and is about to be swept by the lowly chicago bears has fans talking any sort of smack about anything.

  22. Paying fans have the right to see the best players on the field at all times minus legitimate injuries ! Otherwise, WHY THE HELL WATCH THE NFL ? The nfl should subtract 1/16 of the Vikings Broadcast revenue or any other team that sits staring players to give them a rest or to prevent normal injury risk to players !
Otherwise fans are paying for collage quality level teams. !
I support this even if my team sits a starter for non injury reason. If a team sits a player for “discipline reason” , that player should be fined the equivalent of one games pay automatically, and his conduct that resulted in his not playing should be reviewed by the league ! If the league determines that the player did not qualify for a one game suspension then the team should forfeit 1/16 of they’re league broadcast revenue and have draft picks taken away.

PUT YOUR BEST PLAYERS ON THE FIELD AT ALL TIMES ( minus legit injuries ) !!!!

  23. Some really dumb comments here. Zim doesn’t care about your season ticket package. You also get two preseason games with that, but you bought them anyway (allegedly). And those popping off about “needing” Cousins to have a good game agains the Bears would freak out of he got hurt and Mannion was your starter in the playoffs.

You absolutely sit your key starters Sunday. Nothing to play for. You think 1 game is going to trump the last 6 months? Nope. But one cheap shot and injury sure will.

    ——————————-

But the Vikings did, didn’t they. Something that is getting over looked because of a win. If I were Packers fan, I’d be nervous about playing a healthy Vikings team because its hard to beat a team 3 times in one year.

  25. Time to watch collage football ! NCAA=nfl in quality of entertainment ! Why pay the high cost of the nfl when collage costs so much less and is equal to what the Vikings put out ?
PUT YOUR BEST PLAYERS ON THE FIELD AT ALL TIMES ( minus legit injuries ) !!!!

  26. I wonder what the nfl would do if a team put all their second and third string teams on the field the whole season to try and qualify for the number one pick in next years draft ? Would the league condone it ? Or would they grow a pair and fine the hell out of them and take away draft picks ? Somehow I think the nfl would rollover and play dead ! Paying fans of the nfl are entitled to watch the best players on the field at ALL TIMES minus legit injuries !!!!!!! Go NCAA !!

  27. If the. Vikings sit cousins then I’ve lost all respect for them and the league ! Hell high school football would be just as entertaining than the nfl if they sit players ! I wonder if the Vikings loose to Chicago because of sitting their starting QB, how much they improve in next years draft ? Do they move up a couple of spots ? Maybe next year they sit cousins half the year to move up in the 2021 draft ? Maybe Miami sits their starters to have the number one pick ? All the othe sub .500 teams might learn a lesson from the Vikings and purposefully loose their games ???
I think the league should reduce the Vikings number of draft picks and fine the team the equivalent of 1/16th their broadcast income !!! And would love to see season ticket holders sue the team and or league for fraud !!!

  28. Are all the Vikings fans here proud of the showing of Rodgers being hurt from the Barr tackle on the jumbo screen before the game Monday? Is that the best motivational highlight they have to offer? Most classless act in sports , I think it really motivated Za Darius Smith , just ask the Vikings O line.

  29. After the afternoon games on Sunday, Seattle will get to decide if they want to have a drag out slug fest with the 49ers. Their prize for winning? A game against the rested Vikings. The cost of losing? Traveling to a depleted Philly or the coachless Cowboys (slow clap). If there is no chance for a bye I would do what the Vikings are doing and rest who you can for WC Weekend.

  30. If the Vikings sit their starting QB , maybe the bears can do the same ? Hell why stop at just the QB, sit all your staters Minnesota ! That way the fans won’t feel obligated to waste their time showing up for the game ! I’m sure they could be doing something better than watching collage/high school football ! Plus you save money by not having to spend as much to clean up the stands ! Might loose a little beer sales though . Hell, let’s take this even father. Why not just forfeit the game and let your players sleep in at home. I’m sure the league won’t mind !

  31. What would happen if the Vikings just stayed home and slept in and forfeited the game ? Might loose some beer sales, but that’s a small price to pay to REST ALL YOUR PLAYERS ! The league won’t do anything to you. The fans ( season ticket holders) apparently don’t have any rights ! Just grow a pair and do it Vikings ! What do you have to loose ???

Bro, if you need an injury from 3 years ago to motivate you and you were not even on the team. You are a cry baby. Vikings stadium they can show whatever they want get over it. Football is a violent game, get over it.

  33. A lot of nonsense and anger in here for a team that has secured a playoff spot before the season ends, and essentially had a bye week this week. Here’s what you can do….sell your tickets to a Bears fan. Don’t renew your season tickets. It’s that simple. There’s 20 other teams in the NFL that would love to be in this situation in week 17.

  34. This is a totally meaningless game for all the players on the field save Mr. Trubisky and I’m not sure in what direction it matters in his case. My guess is that most of the complaining posters here from the Vikes never even suited up for a football game at the high school level, let alone college or the pros. Someone could get hurt in a useless game (please ignore a move up 1 or down 2 in draft spots.) No one will be forcing you to attend or watch on TV.

Regardless of the outcome you Viking fans will get at least one more game and we Bear fans can go back to our normal pursuits of complaining about the Bear front office, coaching staff, and Trubisky so give it a rest please.

    —————–
Except…..all the teams in the playoffs have winning records!!! Even with their rb’s healthy, the Vikes haven’t beat one.

  36. As far as resting players… I agree they should. Nothing to gain. You do what’s best for the team. It would be easy to be the hard nosed coach and say, “we have to be better!” And go all out to beat Chicago. We’ll see how it goes.
If the fan doesn’t like it… when you’re the head coach of a team, you can do it how you want.

  37. It’s kinda strange the Vikings wanted to pull up a three year old video of Rodgers getting hurt as motivation. It backfired. Big time. Maybe they should spend more time training their fans how to execute their stolen cheer correctly, so they don’t look like drunks trying to high-five themselves. Start there.

  38. Stella- that Barr hit must still be relevant you routinely cry about it. If only your could get enough money selling your packer stock you could buy a ticket and give them a piece of your mind.

  39. I didn’t bring it up! The Vikings did! They thought it was “funny” I guess………….(in a fight-picky way.)

  40. Lol – packer fans calling other fan bases drunk. Perhaps perform a quick internet search off packer fan drinking off dumpster and see an “owner” taking luge shots off a dumpster and thinking that’s cool!

Your team got three turnovers away from the Packer at HOME and you STILL lost. The only reason the Vikings have wins is the played bottom of the barrel teams this year. Beating America’s Team in Dallas isn’t tough to do. You backed into the playoffs and the Saints will kill the Vikings 45 to 13.

    ________

Don’t even waste your time trying to reason with them, it’s no use.
The Minneapolis Star Tribune recently listed the Rodgers’ injury as one of the top 5 sport stories of the last decade, as voted on by local fans.

Think about that for a minute, an opponent’s injury one of the area’s brightest sport moments of the last 10 years, how sad is that?
They celebrated it when it happened and they’ve continued to talk about how much joy it brought them over the last 3 years.
Minnesota has some of the most crass and classless fans on the planet.
And it simply will never change.

  44. Waffle then why do you spend so much time on the irrelevant Vikings stories? Find some friends a girlfriend or boyfriend if that what you into no judgement. But you shouldn’t spend so much time on a team you think is irrelevant and read their local paper.

  45. Why is everyone acting like resting starters is a new thing? There is always a chance your team could rest its starters in the final week so plan accordingly. Resting players has been part of the game for years. Also there is a 0% chance anyone wins a fraud case lol. The team is a business and can do what it feels best for its company. If you dont like it find a new hobby. A bunch of cry babies

  46. Packers fans think they know our team better than we do. Little do they know what we knew at the half and they even think a melt down is in progress when many of us predicted the outcome. One would think they would be better off worried about getting beat by the Lions twice this season then trolling Vikings fans.

    _____

But the Vikings did, didn’t they….

Do you mean healthier Vikings team like the ones GB defeated in week 2?

If I were a Minn. Fan I’d be worried that, the Packers and that “trash defense” have only allowed Minnesota to score 3 TDs in the 8 quarters they have played.

  49. Arctic, you know full well the Packers beat the Lions … but you want to bring the Loser’s Narrative into part two of a pretty marginal post.

Weighed, measured and found wanting. You’ve been read like a cheap novel.

You see, it’s in the “W” column. Packers won.

  50. Cousins was flat against the Packers he should play at least half the game against the Bears and their good defense what better way to prepare for the playoffs I don’t see how sitting helps him.

  51. The purples talked crazy all off-season, adding yet another Super Homeboy Bowl to their already-impressive string of off-season championships. We’ve now gone full circle and come back around to the old standby: “Oh yeah? Well, so-and-so beat your Packers. So there!”

Yeah, you really got us there.

  52. I’d rather rest my starters than play them against an angry team with nothing to lose. Recipe for injury disaster.

  53. Back to actual football. I’m still with Zimmer on sitting the starters. They have nothing to gain by playing them and plenty to lose. Winning it all from the sixth seed is difficult but not impossible. The Packers did it in 2010 and I believe the Giants have done it… maybe even twice?

For all this talk of the Packers not being able to stop other teams the way they stopped the Vikings last week, the Packers have held their last 4 opponents to 13, 15, 13 and 10 points, respectively. If the Packer defense plays like it played Monday night, I like their chances against pretty much anybody. The onus is then on the offense.

As always, we shall see what we shall see.

  54. Stella – check the timestamps of the comments, you commented on this before I had even read the story. But yeah I brought up your obsession with Aaron’s injury from Barr’s legal hit.
