Cowboys interview Marvin Lewis

The Cowboys have begun searching for their next head coach before parting ways with their current one.

Clarence E. Hill, Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that the Cowboys have interviewed former Bengals coach Marvin Lewis. Lewis quietly met with the Cowboys, and he’s leaving Dallas on Saturday.

Lewis was a candidate for the Washington job, which went to former Panthers coach Ron Rivera.

This news follows the report that former Packers coach Mike McCarthy, who is under consideration for the other three current vacancies, will meet with the Cowboys.

These developments bolster the notion that the Cowboys won’t be pursuing a college coach and the learning curve that comes along with that approach, instead looking at coaches with NFL experience.

Others to watch in this regard include Vikings coach Mike Zimmer, a former Cowboys defensive coordinator whose season may end Sunday, Vikings assistant head coach Gary Kubiak, and Saints assistant head coach/tight ends coach Dan Campbell, a former Cowboys player who served as interim coach in Miami for 12 games in 2015.

  1. He’s a good puppet and also likes to clap whenever his team screws up… sounds like a perfect fit to me.

  2. I think if you asked Marvin what he learned in Cincinnati that could help him do a better job in the future he would have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.

  3. When a coach leaves and the team gets worse, the guy was a good coach (like Marvin Lewis). When a coach leaves and the team gets better, the guy was a bad coach (like Mike McCarthy).
I mean no disrespect to McCarthy, but I’d hire Marvis Lewis if I were Jerry Jones. Marvin already has experience working with the Bengals’ owner, so he won’t be the least bit frustrated to have input from the owner, especially since Jerry isn’t a cheap skate. Jerry Jones and his sons understand the game of football on a much higher level than any other owner, and higher than most current G.M.’s. It ain’t perfect, but the Cowboys’ job is a great opportunity. And they have a great young QB, who’s still learning and improving.

  4. It is sooooooooo obvious what Jerry Jones is doing. If he tells Garrett he is done, Garrett’s coaching staff is gone too. Jones is interviewing in the hopes that he can cherry pick and/or influence a prospective new HC to keep certain assistants.

This has NOTHING to do with “doing the right thing” for Garrett.

Exactly how I read the title

The Cowboys are entertaining applicants in their DM’s before officially breaking up with their gf.

Garrett is on an expiring contract. There’s no need to fire him.

  7. Absolutely not…The Cowboys don’t need a coach who regularly allowed criminals to play in Cincinnati. The team has made mistakes, but needs players who are solid citizens and Lewis wouldn’t care about that.

  8. Jones is a dirt bag. It’s not customary to interview unless you have an opening. Can he at least do the decent thing and fire Garrett so the assistant coaches and their families can move on with their lives?

  9. Why is everyone complaining about how this is disrespectful to Garrett? As long as Jerry told Jason he isn’t coming back he has every reason to interview new coaches. Disrespect would be firing the guy a week before his contract is up.

  10. Jerry Jones and his sons understand the game of football on a much higher level than any other owner, and higher than most current G.M.’s.
    _______________
4 playoff wins over the last 24 years says the Jones don’t have that higher level you
    claim they do.

  11. I feel this is all just a stunt. In a week Jerry will come out and say after intervieving multiple candidates we feel Garrett is the best man…

  12. I think Garrett hasn’t been formally let go is because Jones hasn’t fully decided to replace him yet. He’s seeing how the interviews go and if any of the candidates ring his bell enough that he wants to replace Garrett with them.

  13. Hahaha! The Jones’ understand football better than anyone else in the league?! That statement is EXACTLY why cowboys fans are laughed at. If they were so smart, why are they perennially 8-8 with a coach everyone knew wasn’t good enough? Dumbest owner & dumbest fans, both parties deserve one another.

  14. So we are firing Garrett for going about 8-8 the last decade for Marvin Lewis who had gone like 8-8 the past decade. Tom Landry and Clint Murchison roll in their graves.

  15. I’m actually glad Jerry is interviewing experienced candidates. As a Cowboy fan I am hesitant about these college candidates. The NFL is a different animal. ML to me had a bad gig just like the Browns gig would be. He had some success with mediocre teams. MM, had BF, and AR, in my opinion would have had more Superbowls if they would have put some concentration on the defensive side of the ball more. They would put up 30pts a game but give up just as many. Plus in my opinion defense and being able to run the ball wins Superbowls. If a current coordinator like Bieniemy or Eberflus could be a candidate I’d be happy with that route other than college coaches. U Meyer and others would take years to build a philosophy with NFL players. Cowboys have talent now. I just think it’s poor coaching not seeing what will make this roster excel. I’m not saying they are a coach away from a Superbowl but they need experience at this point not a coaching project.

  16. I’ve been a Cowboys fan since Danny White was QB. They hire Marvin Lewis I’m done. I’ll switch to rooting for the local team (Colts).

  17. To Roger Foley: In 10 days Garrett is a free agent. Jerry doesn’t have to fire him. Jason is free to go any time as well.

  18. Keeping this circus in the news is Jerry’s way of trying to steal the spotlight off of philly. Jerry’s seething that the eagles ended their season so this is his way of getting back at them…..by getting all the headlines.

Prob is, Eagles don’t want headlines! lol

  19. Why do you guys think its standard practice to put in two weeks or so of notice before you quit/leave? Interviewing before the spot is open is normal. What world are yall living in?

  20. Jerry Jones and his sons understand the game of football on a much higher level than any other owner, and higher than most current G.M.’s.

Yep, they win one playoff game every six years or so. Probably all that rocket scientist stuff their doing over at NASA with their superior intellect takes up most of their time.

  21. C’mon – Lewis did an amazing job in Cincinnati considering the Bengals ownership – Mike Brown makes JJones and Al Davis look perfectly sane and normal. Anyone that can win in that condition is a good coach. He definitely deserves a second shot somewhere.

  22. Marvin Lewis would do better with an organization that will actually spend money. Mile Brpwn of the Bengals is a penny pincher.

    You must be joking, right?

The Eagles are the annoying little brother of the NFC East.

Always seeking attention and trying to jump in front of the Cowboys

to sign or draft players they perceive the Cowboys want to aquire.

Or make a splash to say look at us.

  24. “Why is he letting Jerrah emabarass him like this????”
    =========

Um, I think you answered your own question.

“If Garrett had a shred of self-respect he’d resign.”

  25. He built pretty good defenses for both the Ravens and Bengals. Has a an excellent NFL resume. You all expect too much out of coaches. You can only go as far as your QB takes you. Dalton was never that guy.

    _____________________

Lets see because if he told he’s not being brought back instead of simply letting him go so he can interview for other vacant coaching jobs, instead he’s holding on to him and potentially denying him of those interviews.

  27. So Jerrah “interviews” a few of the loser retreads then says he already has the best in Garrett and gives him a new 10 year contract.

  28. Well you have to hand it to Lewis. He made the Bengals relevant when he was there which was something you couldn’t say for the decade before he was hired. Still, I’m not sure how much of an upgrade he is over Garrett. Marvin does like to sign every dirtbag he can find so that should fit right in with the Cowboys.

  29. Jasen Garrett is sitting in on the interviews. He is strongly being considered for special assistant to the GM.

Now if that were true, it would be weird. But not unbelievable at this point.

  30. If Jones really cared about the fans of the Cowboys, he would inform all concerning the situation with Garrett. His disrespect for the fans will continue until JerryWorld stops being filled up on Cowboys’ games. His “I don’t care about anything but power and money” makes me sick! He’s like a little kid who says “I know something that you don’t know!”

  31. No question …. Lewis was there because of Rooney.
Ron Rivera already taken, so Lewis will make the rounds to all NFL teams hiring a coach.
No sane owner would hire Marvin Lewis.

His team totally could of beaten the Steelers in a playoff game a few years back but bone headed uncontrolled players cost them the game late in the 4th quarter , I wanna say it was like 30 to 45 yards in unsportsmanlike penalty’s that killed them. Me and my son , who is a Bengals fan was listening to it on the radio otw to Grandma house and it was so bad all we could do is laugh to mask the pain.

  33. Marvin Lewis is the Bengals version of the Cowboys Jason Garrett. Please, please hire Marvin, Jerrah.

  34. Maybe McCarthy and Lewis were interviewing for a coordinator position. With experienced coordinators the Cowboys could go with a great college coach for the head coach.

Never hurts to think outside the box.

  35. Um, is this a joke? Jerry could pull all the Marvin Lewis strings as he’s done with Garrett all these years but really, Marvin Lewis as a head coach of the Dallas Cowboys?

  36. I think Jones is waiting for the Giants to fill their position because they are afraid Garrett will sign there!

  37. Guess the Rooney rule has been satisfied. Can’t believe they would seriously consider hiring Lewis.

  38. As a bengals fan I will say I like Marvin, he gets hammered by media and fans but in reality what he did in cincy with Mike brown as his owner was amazing. You put him in a situation where the owner will spend money and have an actual scouting department, practice facility, and basically the nicest training facilities in football he could be a great coach. It wouldn’t surprise me a bit.

  39. I’ve been a Dallas Cowboys fan since 1972. If Jerry hires Marvin Lewis, I’m done. If there’s one other coach that exemplifies the epitome of mediocrity, it’s Marvin Lewis.

  40. Doesn’t it seem strange that they are interviewing candidates for the position of head coach when you still have a head coach?

  41. Maybe Garrett is the one hanging around. Do the math. He is making $6 million a year, that’s over $16,000 a DAY. I’d hang around for another 14 days for a cool quarter million in CASH.

  42. Yeah, so when you say he is only being interviewed because of the Rooney rule, that is racism. You are racist. The only thing worse is trying to act like you aren’t racist. Just own it.

As a Seahawks fan, I would love for Marvin Lewis to replace Pete Carroll when the time comes. Guy knows the game and the league and kept that loser team relevant for all those years, years which saw some great Steelers and Ravens teams in their division.

    ———-
    This might hurt a little.
If it’s ‘sooooooo obvious’ then tell us why Jerry already fired all the assistants? They were gone before the new year, Richard has already interviewed with the Giants, so tell us again how obvious it is what Jerry’s doing.
As for the rest of you, This wouldn’t be news if it were almost any other team. The reason why PFT writes ~4 stories/day on this topic is ONLY because it’s the Cowboys. It pays them too, here ya’ll are 80 comments in, likely thousands of clicks. It’s news because it’s the Dallas Cowboys. If it were Detroit, or Cincy or whatever it would get one story total until the new coach is hired.

  44. This is nuts unless Jerry told Garret he wasn’t renewing his contact on the 14th.otherwise why would you interview for a job there is no vacancy for.

  45. Hahaha. Old Coach giggles and his 0-7 playoff record. Guy is a horrible head coach. Sounds perfect for the Cowboys. Do the deal Jerrah.

Might as well interview Hue Jackson and Freddie Kitchens.

    ************************************************************************

Except Marvin Lewis isn’t a complete joke.

Jackson and Kitchens may be coordinators/positional coaches in the future, but neither did anything to warrant ever being HC’s again. Lewis’s teams weren’t great, but they were at least mediocre to competitive, and they weren’t laughingstock-level dysfunctional like Jackson’s/Kitchens’ Browns (excluding the high player arrest rate). That was with a cheap owner and rosters with average talent. Unless something drastic changes, mediocre-to-competitive is all you need to win the NFC East. Not saying Lewis is the best option or that he has any real chance for Dallas, but they could do worse.

  47. Jerry Jones is so stealth.
Is that because of his wealth?
    Jerry Jones is the king.
Even if he hasn’t gotten the ring.
    Jerry Jones hires with merit.
    Unless it’s Jason Garrett.
    Jerry Jones and Jason garret.
Equals the IQ of a parrot.

  48. What is the big deal? Jason is at the office selling himself to continue coaching the Cowboys. If they bring in a couple people and find that they aren’t any better that what Jason is offering, they just extend him. If they fire him and they find out later, then that door is closed.
