Mike McCarthy on way to meet with Cowboys

Officially, the Cowboys have not announced that they’re moving on from head coach Jason Garrett. But that isn’t keeping them from lining up interviews with his potential successor.

Former Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is on his way to Dallas and will meet with the Cowboys, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

McCarthy, who has been out of coaching since the Packers fired him during the 2018 season, has emerged as a candidate for multiple openings this year. He has already interviewed with the Browns.

The situation in Dallas is highly unusual, as the team hasn’t definitively said Garrett is out but also seems to be conducting the early stages of a search for his replacement. McCarthy could be that replacement, but the Cowboys seem to be in no hurry to make anything official.

  1. I know from his time in GB, he has strong opinions on what the GM/HC relationship should be. He was adamant about that. Can’t believe working for Jones is a fit.

It seems more likely taking this interview shows the Panthers/Giants/Browns/potentially Vikings that they shouldn’t wait on making a deviation about him, as he will likely be hired by someone this cycle.

  2. Jones can’t find anyone that will work under him with his meddling ways, so now he’s on to candidates that are desperate and don’t have viable options – what a joke he is

  3. If he’s not good enough for the Packers, why is he good enough for Cowboys? Jerry needs to turn this over to an adult who can lead men. Hire Urban Meyer, let him clean house and bring in his staff, and get out of the way.

  4. so he’s going into an organization to interview for the HC position that’s not technically available… what a jerk! Jerry and Mike are made for each other.

  5. Think outside the box. What if the star players love Jason Garrett? What says they don’t bring in a new a coach and keep Garrett in another capacity. I personally think it’s honorable for both sides to finish the contract.

  6. Don’t underestimate Mac’s ego. He could look at Dallas and say, “with me, we’ll win 14 games and a SB next year” and not even worry or care about Jerrah. In his mind, why go to NY when they’re a few years away? Although, maybe Mac thinks he can win it all right away there too 🙂

  7. Can’t believe working for Jones is a fit.

The only “fit” for Jones is Jones. He’s already GM, he should give HC a try. I’m sure he knows all there is to know about the job. Just look how he’s mastered being GM.

  8. Jerruh Jones’s ego caused him to lose Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells, two of the best head coaches of their era.
That is all you need to know about why the Cowboys haven’t won in over a decade.
No matter who the head coach is, Jerruh Jones runs the Cowboys, or should I say runs the Cowboys into the ground?
No matter who gets the job, they’ll take the money that Jones will heap on them, stay for a few years, then cash in their chips without winning anything. And that’s the way it will be until Jones is finally gone.
I love seeing the Cowboys lose, and as a Packers fan, it would please me greatly if McCarthy got this job so everyone can see just how much he benefited from having Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers.

  9. Correct me if I am wrong, but didn’t Garrett’s contract expire with the end of the Cowboy’s season? You don’t really have to fire him then. He kinda just stopped being an employee of the team at that time.

  10. Why would you want your team turned over to Urban Meyer? I could see him getting indicted at the next level.

  11. Perhaps I am an outlier in business. I am constantly receiving applications, often interviewing people for jobs that are not “open” in my business. I am open with my employees about it. They understand that I will keep/hire the best person for the job. Rarely do I replace an employee with another, unless they are warned several times beforehand about the reason I am thinking about replacing them. I do not “fire” an employee without dang good reason without a possible “replacement on the line”.

  12. Correct me if I am wrong, but didn’t Garrett’s contract expire with the end of the Cowboy’s season?

    Ok, you are wrong.
It has been mentioned once or a hundred times on PFT that his contact expires on Jan 14, 2020.

  13. Jerry Jones is allowed to interview candidates for head coach. Jason Garrett isn’t allowed to interview for jobs as he’s still under contract with the Cowboys. Could Jerry Jones be the reason that NFL coaches finally unionize?

And shame on Mike McCarthy, and any other person who would interview for the position while someone is still under contract for that same position.

I think it expires on January 14. As a Redskins fan I’d like to see Garrett extended, or maybe Jones can be the new coach. Yeah, that would be fun.

  15. After a thorough search, it’s been determined that Jason Garrett is the best option for the Cowboys.

  16. The way this is being handled is a symptom of the dysfunction that is the cow boys organization. (Typo intended). Narrow minded Packers fan here, so let me apologize to the politically correct. The cow boys are a big rival for years, and if he wants to coach them don’t come back to GB unless is as a coach. Like favray going to Minnysooda. Only the years make it ok that Lombardi went to Washington.

  17. Wow talk about hedging your bets. I don’t know if I could stay if I was in Garret’s shoes. On one hand hes not that great of a coach and may have to prove himself as a coordinator before getting another job. At the same time Jones is all but giving jum commands like a dog. I doubt that works well in a locker room seeing your leader having to grovel for the job.

  18. This is like dating other women before you break up with your girlfriend to see if you can find any anyone better.

  19. Only the years make it ok that Lombardi went to Washington.

Lambeau left for the Chicago Cardinals, then Washington, also.

  20. So if someone calls you in to interview for a high profile job that will pay you millions a year, you guys are going to say no because there’s someone that has that position for 10 more days? Im not sure who you are trying to impress here…

Dallas will have a vacancy at head coach in 10 days. Most businesses, any good one at least, would not let a position with that much importance sit vacant without at least some options to fill it. If Garrett is “campaigning ” for his job like they say, it would make sense that he was told in some fashion they will look elsewhere. Jerry said they were going to take a hard look at coaching. Garrett shouldn’t be suprised be any of this.

Again nobody really knows what’s going on behind the scenes. This is all speculations at this point.

  21. If Garret wants to stay in the NFL, and learn how to win, then getting away from the Cowboys would be the best thing that could happen to him. Eat crow and be an assistant for a couple of years in a quality organization that focuses on winning, maybe Pittsburg or Seattle, or New England if they’d have him. Then go for a HC job – but not Dallas – and he’d be in real demand.
Doubt this will be allowed to happen. I’m with the guys who think Jones is running a power play to keep Garrett off the market for good, just like he did with Romo. Would love to see Garrett tell Jerry to stick it where the sun don’t shine.

  22. Zeke may as well ask for a trade and Witten should retire if McCarthy is hired.

He has no use for either position, regardless of talent there.

Lafleur took McCarthy’s team with LESS offensive talent and more than doubled the wins.

McCarthy will not play Elliott as intended because he does not pass block enough…SMH
That was his attitude in GB

  24. I have a different take on what’s going on. I think Jerry wants to keep Garrett as OC, and ONLY OC. So he wants McCarthey to come in and further groom him as a Head Coach. Think about it, Jerry gets the best of both Jerry worlds.

  25. Garrett doesn’t need to be fired because his contract is up this year. He has been told what is up.

  26. nyneal says:

Jerruh Jones’s ego caused him to lose Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells, two of the best head coaches of their era.
    =============================================================

Johnson’s ego was just as large, so in the end the boss won. Contrary to popular belief, Jerry and Parcells got along great. Jerry gave him one of his Papa John’s franchises as a gift after he left.

  27. Its funny watching everyone get their panties in a bunch over this. Who cares about Garrett’s status. Cowboys will have a new coach soon and it will be an improvement. A billionaire really doesn’t care what anyone thinks. And why should he?

  28. “so he’s going into an organization to interview for the HC position that’s not technically available… what a jerk! Jerry and Mike are made for each other.”

a jerk? he is an experience former longtime nfl head coach who is looking for a job with a team, any team, and was invited to the interview by the owner himself and you call him a jerk?.there are only a small amount of teams that need a coach and all interviews bring competition for his services if they like him and dont want to lose him to another team.smart move on MMs part talking to Jones.

  29. Jerry will hold 5-7 interviews a week during the playoffs just to keep his always 8-8 franchise in the headlines, then after the Super Bowl decide Garrett deserves a 10 year extension because nobody is better at going…….8-8.

  30. I dont have a problem with this – McCarthy would be the third best coach in Dallas since Landry (after Johnson and Parcells) and a previous SB winner.

  31. McCarthy definitely deserves better than the Green Bay Charity Case. His family deserves better than living in Green Bay to. McCarthy doesn’t have a gap in his teeth like Lombardi, so he didn’t have what the league views as a strength in negotiations on the price to give the cheese the advantage in the 16 game season.

GB the beneficiary of the most gifted championships in the history of sports.

As a Redskins fan you should be more self aware.

Your team just hired a coach with more losing seasons than winning and a worse

    record than J. Garrett.

And your new coach accomplished that feat with an elite QB.

More like the Jerry Springer show.

  34. McMuffin in Jerry world! Please… this would be great! The entertainment factor… just think of the possibilities.

  35. MM could be very good for Dak and the Cowboys. They need to rebuild their defense.
The def line is good but after that they are lacking.

  36. Maybe they are interviewing and will come back and say they reached out but couldn’t find a better coach then Garrett. Im hoping he gets a 10 year deal

  37. Great hire if they take him. He will finally be in control without a Diva QB in charge calling the shots. Because we all know A A Ron hets what a A Ron wants. They hire him, look out Dallas has more weapons than Green Bay.😈😈😈😈😈😈

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Well, If I had written this fantasy fairy-tale, every single one of the thirteen Green Bay Packer championships would’ve been at the direct and intentional expense of the Minnesota Vikings. What an ending!
