Texans take wild overtime win over Bills

Getty Images

It was the best of games, it was the worst of games.

The Texans and Bills played a wild, crazy, insane, spectacular mess of a game today in Houston, with the Texans finally coming out on top after Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson made the play to set up the game-winning field goal.

In an instant, Watson was sandwiched between two Bills players. In the next instant, Watson had escaped both of them and thrown the ball to running back Taiwan Jones, who raced 34 yards, setting up an easy game-winning field goal. And that was how the Texans earned a hard-fought 22-19 overtime victory against the Bills.

It was a heartbreaking loss for the Bills, who jumped out to a 16-0 lead only to collapse late in the second half, fall behind 19-16, and then somehow manage to get back in field goal range and send the game into overtime.

Watson earned the first playoff win of his career, while Bills quarterback Josh Allen made some great plays of his own but also made some big mistakes. It was a crazy one that shined a bright spotlight on these two young quarterbacks, and one that allowed the Texans to advance to the next round of the playoffs.

  1. What a complete and total meltdown by the Bills, they actually traded up to get Josh Trash Allen and he choked like a pig.

He made some of the biggest boneheaded plays in history.

Nobody circles the drain like the Buffalo Bills.

  2. Sorry Bills fans.

Won’t make you feel better but the play clock was at zero on the 3rd and 18 play. Should have been blown dead.

    Great season anyway.

  3. Tried to warn Bills fans Josh Allen will not score enough to win the game. Buffalo’ s defense did all they could but Allen doesn’t have what it takes.

  4. The Bill’s really just gave it away. Too many FGs instead of touchdowns. IMO, that PF crackback penalty was trash. But, at the end of day, you have to find a way to win and the Texans did.

  5. watson gave himself up on that last pass. the play should have been blown dead. But I guess it wouldn’t have advanced the liberal narrative

  6. TRASH ALLEN 52 percent completion percentage. Remember bills fanboys all that matters is record therefore Tebow better playoff qb than Trash Allen. Bills should start John brown at qb next year. Allen is trash but bills fanboys JUST DON’T KNOW FOOTBALL!!!

  7. My picks before the game. Pats never lose, Bills are cursed, Hawks are hurt, Saints are cursed after bountygate.

    One right pick so far.

    Next???

  8. So many tables destroyed in Buffalo tonight.

25 years and counting for a playoff win.

I was pulling for you bills mafia.

  9. Bad Tackling
Conservative play calling in the second half
And I can’t remember the last time a Bills Opponent was called for holding… I think it was sometime last year before Jerry Hughes threatened a ref
    Pathetic classless officiating to boot

  10. Both teams played like hot garbage. Neither of these teams are capable of making a deep playoff run against elite teams.

Deshaun Watson is the real deal, Josh Allen is trash.
    ****************************************************
Not sure Josh Allen is trash, but who was calling some of those ridiculous pass plays and which players were deciding that the Texans linemen did not need to be blocked?

  12. O’Brian should still be fired. Going for the 4th and 1 near the end of regulation from the Buffalo 30? You kick the FG and you win the game in regulation. Stupid stupid call.

  13. “Sorry Bills fans.

    Thank you.

Tough end, but a promising season. A lot to look forward to (though I’m not a moral victory guy).

You’re a stand up fan, GMG.

I thought I was going nuts. Play clock was at :00 for a second and no flag. Nobody even mentioned anything. Even during reviews, nobody said or showed the expired clock. U guys did good, Bills. Let game get away n now Houston obviously will lose as they’re inconsistent. Not a real threat in AFC.

  15. I watched a QB attempt to lateral to a guard…

On first down… with 50 seconds left and about 10 yards to go to get into tying field goal range…

And that may not have been the dumbest thing he did those frantic last 15 minutes of the game..

    Stunning lack of awareness

  16. And congrats to Houston. That was a very gutty comeback. Watson is so fun to watch (though not today for me)

  17. I’m surprised Booger hasn’t gotten an interview for a head coaching vacancy…..
seems very knowledgeable, example “3rd & 10, they should just run a little draw pick up a few yards and spike it” that’s the kind of stuff that only great minds come up with…….

Worst hot take of all time.

Allen was solid today. He’ll only get better.

  19. Hate to kick him when he’s down but this team needs a new head coach. The team has been lousy down the stretch and their game last week vs. the Jets was disgraceful. Sean’s let them get sloppy and lazy. He needs to go.

  20. The Texans win was not pretty enough. Just wasn’t a good enough win. I really don’t even consider it a win. Needs to be better.

Oh wait, that only can be the narrative when the Packers win games.

  21. The Bills overachieved this year. The outcome was hard to swallow but this franchise is on the rise for a first time in awhile. Josh Allen second year quarterback made plenty of mistakes. He also went 10-6 and got his team to the playoffs. Can’t wait to see him grow in year 3. Go Bills, Nice win Houston. You earned it!

  22. Congrats to the Bills and their coaches for returning to the playoffs. As a PATS fan this is the first time in my life that I was hoping the Bills would win.

The TV clock we see isn’t the official 40 second clock and may not, probably isn’t, right. All the TV time is a reference for the TV audience, nothing else.

  24. Can anyone remember how many boneheaded plays Josh Allen made today?

    I lost count.

    #dumbasarock

  25. Everyone wants to get all over the tip of JJ Watt, great player but he had one sack and was going against a green rookie most of the game.
This game was more about Buffalo amd their inability to have decent play calling. Especially on defense when they play that soft zone. That means 1st down for the other team every time.
Houston is going to get throttled if they play this bad next game.
This game was more about Buffalo losing than Houston winning the game.

  26. The Bills Defense remind me of the Pittsburgh Steelers in that remotely if they had a SERVICEABLE/ Average QB they win this game. That’s why the Bills Offense was Ranked 24th in the league also was 26th in passing. It was the Complete WEAK-LINK all season.

Lets keep it 100 here, you can switch Josh Allen jersey with Trubisky and we can play a children’s game of i can’t see the DIFFERENCE.

  27. Josh Allen did not take care of the ball while he scrambled and he fumbled. That was the difference in this game. The way Watson escaped the sack and threw a pass that resulted in the winning field goal was amazing but he would not have had that chance if Allen did not fumble.

  28. 26 years ago the Bills came back from 32 down to beat the Houston Oilers in overtime in a wild card game. Biggest comeback in NFL history.
Today, Houston gets a little revenge.

    what’s the conservative narrative?

  30. I love how now we hear about all the Texan fans. You guys got lucky big time in this game if Allen had a couple more years of games this would have been over at half time. But for real the bills defense and all defenses need too learn how to tackle what a joke. If they just wrapped up Deshaun.

  31. again that was idiotic by booger and they turn it over and i can’t believe tess didn’t say um how would that help it’s 3rd down

  32. Off topic, but those had to be the worst announcers I have ever listened to. I thought I was listening to the JJWatt fan club broadcast. As they were praising him for his one scack, did they even realize \Hughes had 3?? And I wish they could teach “Booger(??)” how to annunciate words..

Houston better pray for a Patriots win because if they come to Baltimore with that same level of play they will get blown out worse than the 41-7 first game.
    ——————————————-
Houston, the 4 seed, would go to Baltimore, the 1 seed, if the Patriots, the 3 seed, win. Go back to reading your bubble gum comics and leave football discussions to the adults.

  34. Yea, Allen was real solid. If you take away all those interceptions the Texans defense should have had, the pick 6 they should have had, throwing a 20 yard pass to a double covered FULLBACK in overtime, all those unnecessary sacks he took to take the Bills out of FG range on numerous occasions, and lets not forget the dumbest play I’ve ever seen in my life – the lateral with the game on the line. Real solid QB the Bills have here, LOL.

  35. Yet another year where the AFC East shows how garbage they are outside of the Patriots

Bills coming up though, watch out next year. The Patriots’ reign is over

  36. Congratulations to the Texans and their fans.
I hope you go all the way.
What is depressing for me is I was just remembering there were 4 NFL teams that originated
in my home state of Texas. 3 are in the tournament as I am watching the Titans (Oilers)
play now. Chiefs,(Dallas Texans) play next week.
But the flagship team and mine is in dry dock and out until next season.

  37. Exciting game, but c’mon – Josh Allen made more stupid decisions with the ball than you normally see in 10 games. Fumbled twice, threw 2 sure picks dropped by the D, took sacks to drive them out of a FG range, tried a blind lateral with 50 seconds left down by 3, etc., etc.

The guy must be dumb as a rock.

  38. What a game. Not sure how Watson stayed up and avoided that sack when getting hit from both sides, but wow. Congrats to Houston.

  39. You gotta give credit where credit is due!! Houston was HORRIBLE in the first half. BOB and Watson made adjustments at halftime and played a hell of a second half! Who sparked the turn around?!? The man everyone loves to hate! JJ Watt!! He was HUGE in the second half. That sack forced a FG and that’s when the magic started happening! JJ only had one sack but his presence was definitely felt out there.

Bob almost blew it.. I get the call but I would have felt better with a 6 pt lead and no time outs remaining for Buffalo at the end.

Wasn’t pretty but we will take it! Good game Bills! Josh played good too for the majority of the game!

  40. I only caught the last 40 seconds of regulation and overtime. Not a fan of either team. The officiating in overtime was horrible. No flag for delay of game on 3rd and 18 even though at least 2 seconds had elapsed after the play clock hit zero. No whistle when Watson was in the grasp. I guess the Bills should have held onto him longer. That blindside block call was horrible and took the Bills out of field goal range for the win. More like a bump and the defender knew it was coming. None of the calls went the Bills way. All at crucial times for the Texans.

That said, the Bills laid down with a surmountable lead. No way should a team go into conservative play calling mode when only up a couple scores.

  41. Feel bad for Josh Allen. He played great then folded like a cheap chair. He wasn’t ready for the big stage this year.

  42. i don’t know what was worse, the teams on the field or the announcers in the booth. Texans are going to get curb stomped next weekend if they play anywhere remotely close to that, doesn’t matter who they play. Hopefully they get rid of the nose picker & tessimoron (tessitore) so it’s manageable to listen to the broadcast if it’s on espn. I also don’t know what was dumber, boogie boy suggesting the bills should spike the ball on 4th down or saying the texans “really don’t want to give up a touchdown here” as there was 20 seconds left while leading by 3.

  43. It ain’t over till it’s over. Congratulations to Deshaun Watson on his first playoff win
If Tennessee pulls off the upset tonight, we get to see Watson/Mahomes round 2 next Sunday/

  44. What game were some of you watching? In the grasp? Nobody grasped him – two defenders hit him at the same time, but neither made any effort to wrap him up. Was a great play by Watson.

And the blindside block was the right call on a bonehead play by the Bills.

And how many times does it need to be explained that the clock you see on TV is not the official game clock?

And to be fair, the play clock expired on the Bills first drive of the third quarter but granted a significantly late timeout. Those plays evened out.

Allen is exactly what you get when you jump what should have been a late 2nd or 3rd day QB up into the early 1st round! Allen reminds me of Tebow the way he always calls his own number, maybe if he’d let the RBs do what they’re paid to do the Bills might have won. Who really wants to play behind a selfish QB like that? He needs to get over himself, he’s not that good!

  47. Texans were gifted the win like I said. What else do you need? I called this hours and hours ago. NFL won’t let their ratings hero Watson lose. Can I get some props?

  49. Hold you heads high, Bills fans! I know you’re disappointed, but the future is bright for you.

  50. The Bills definitely threw away chances to win, and I’m not a follower of either team, but holy cow did the Bills get screwed by bad officiating. Just dreadful and inexcusable.

  51. I get that Bills fans are disappointed, but this whole “the officials robbed us” narrative is ridiculous. The fact is that the Bills had the game won and chocked it away through bad coaching and worse playing.

Blown call on kickoff return was a game changer. How will the NFL explain that one to the bills?
    ——————————

I believe that kickoff should have actually been ruled an illegal forward pass and would be considered incomplete when the ball hit the ground and the play would have been dead. Of course that is a penalty, but I am not sure what the enforcement would be on that play.

  53. Josh Allen tried to lateral to a lineman. He also threw a deep pass to a fullback that was double covered. Neither team deserved to win. That blind side block penalty was awful as well as the ref thinking a player would throw them the ball and not realize it was a touchback. Espn is in love with jj watt. That sums up the game.

Congrats! You were wrong hours and hours ago.

  56. Josh Allen shows flashes that is what Bills fans say and Chris Simms say. Yeah he does. But he more times than not gets that confused toddler look in his eyes and is responsible for plays as dumb as it gets.
He goes stretches missing easy throws but then will hit a deep one once in awhile.
I mean he isn’t a rookie anymore and compare him to a guy like Kyler Murray his first year with a worse team and less starts. Bills fans believe they have their QB for the future but I just do not see it.

  57. Neither team looked like a playoff team. The Bills gave the game away at least 5 times. Neither team won. The Bills lost. Couldn’t overcome two dropped TD passes.

  58. The two Bills who failed to do the most basic function of tackling – WRAP UP – and missed bringing Watson down in OT, leading to the big pass play and eventual game winning field goal, should have to sit and watch a continual loop of that play from start to finish until the plane lands in Buffalo.

Then why were both Milano and White pointing at the play clock on the field while the ball still wasn’t snapped? GI watch the replay.

  60. It seems clear that the clock expired on the Texans at the end of the game. The play was reviewed, but not the expired clock apparently. Why? Didn’t care who won, but still wonder why the NFL can’t do anything right. The clock clearly expired. Why doesn’t that matter?

  61. Bills deserved to lode for sure but if you watch the tape play clock expired a good half second before Desaun snapped the ball on 3rd and 18

What “ bazookajoeflacco says:” meant to say was that if Patriots (#3 seed) lose to to the Titans,(#6 seed), then Houston (#4 seed) would go to KC (#2 seed) and Titans (#6 seed) would go to Baltimore (#1 seed). So he meant to say that Pats (#3 seed) better beat the Titans (#6 seed) so that Houston (#4 seed ) won’t have to go to Baltimore (#1 seed). If Pats (#3 seed would lose then Houston (#4 seed) would avoid going to Baltimore (#1 seed) and go to KC (#2 seed) cuz Titans (#6 seed) would go to Baltimore #1 seed)…. Got it?

Actually for a penalty a review can’t be used to call penalty, a review can only be used to overturned a penalty! If they could use reviews to call penalties they could call one on every single review.

  66. Salty Bills fans blaming the officiating for the loss. What a load of crap! Texans our scored Buffalo 22-6 more than midway thru the 3rd quarter. Y’all had plenty of opportunities to win the game and blew it!

  67. The Houston Buffalo curse is over. I remember when the Oilers played Buffalo in the playoffs and Buffalo always found a way to win. Even one year when the Oilers had a huge lead and Buffalo made the biggest comeback in NFL playoff history to beat the Oilers. I wonder if The town of Buffalo, Texas changes its name to Blue Star, Texas when Houston plays Buffalo.

  68. So they give the Bills a cheap penalty to move them out of FG range and than not give a penalty to the Texans to extend their drive to win the game.
I guess Roger bet on the Texans.

  69. Allen looked good, not great but good, in the first half. As soon as Houston adjusted and caught up however his nerves got the better of him. He clearly freaked out having to play from behind, wasn’t able to focus and make a series of horrendous plays. Didn’t look like trash to me at all though, lots of potential there obviously or they wouldn’t have been in the game at all.

  70. I am of the opinion that Buffalo was the only team in the AFC who had a defense that could handle the Ravens. I said that before they played in the regular season and lost (narrowly), but the reason is that they’re a 4-3 front that plays good zone and has corners who can, to some degree, tackle. It had nothing to do with their record. Lamar Jackson wants to run the ball to the outside and pass across the middle.

If you have athletic linebackers who can cover the middle (Milano or Edmunds) and athletic corners who can cover the flat (White, along with safeties Hyde and Johnson), then you have a chance at slowing the Ravens offense. Baltimore’s O-line will succeed at taking away your front seven on the outside runs, or the players will run away from them, and the responsibility to make tackles will be from your players covering the flat. That would be your corners in a zone defense. Man-to-man hasn’t worked well against Baltimore because it frees up the QB run too much, and Baltimore has too many threats on the ground to assign individual players to each (several HBs, a FB, and both QBs can be called on to run the ball on any given play). You kind of have to play a zone and just tackle whomever comes your way. Because the Ravens’ O-line is so athletic and Roman’s scheme so well practiced, the front seven often gets held up entirely at the line, and it falls to the secondary to make tackles, either at safety up the middle or corner on the outside.

Buffalo and San Francisco both play that classic 4-3 zone coverage and have corners athletic and skilled enough to tackle in open space. That’s what you need to stop the Ravens. I’m not sure that the Chiefs have that advantage, even if their offense is much more potent than the Bills’. San Fran and Buffalo also both have linebackers who can cover the deep middle to stop tight ends crossing there, which is where Lamar Jackson likes to throw. RPOs generally like routes in the middle, whether they cross or dig or slant in or what not, and you have to be able to cover both that and the flat really well to stop the Ravens a few times and give your team a chance to go ahead. I don’t think that the Texans can do any of that, and I don’t think O’Brien is a good enough manager to outcoach Martindale’s defense.

  71. Next season Allen leads the Bill’s to the SB and wins.
    Best young QB in football.

    _____

Put down the wing sauce, hes not the best. He is too inconsistent at this point. That 4th quarter and OT he was a like a deer in headlights. There are quite a few young QB’s better than Allen, in fact he lost to one of them yesterday.

  72. Bills don’t have that killer instinct. They had the Texans right where they wanted them in the first half but kept settling for field goals. They play to conservatively.

  73. lost the game when the bills refused to run in overtime after the proceeding 9 min showed Allen was flustered and wild. That running back the bills have is simply amazing the guy never went down breaks tackles and the play usually was blown dead and he was still upright. i did enjoy watching josh allen though he just goes crazy good entertainment, wish the bills would of won.
