Al Riveron on last play in New Orleans: “None of the contact rises to the level of a foul”

AP

The last play of Sunday’s Vikings-Saints game resulted in a touchdown, along with a real question as to whether Minnesota tight end Kyle Rudolph pushed off before making the catch.

After overtime ended, NFL senior V.P. of officiating Al Riveron answered questions from Larry Holder of TheAthletic.com regarding the decision to not overturn the ruling on the field of no offensive pass interference.

“We looked at all of the angles that FOX afforded us, and FOX gave us some great views,” Riveron said. “There is contact by both players, but none of that contact rises to the level of a foul. This is consistent with what we’ve done all year long, we left the ruling on the field. We let it stand.”

Consistency throughout the season is debatable, because the standard has at times seemed inconsistent. Regardless, Rudolph pushed the chest of safety P.J. Williams with one hand, hard enough that Williams’ head was driven backward. Riveron was adamant that there was no foul.

“[W]e’re very comfortable with what we saw,” Riveron told Holder. “Nothing came through afterward that we had not seen prior to making the ruling.”

Former NFL official Terry McAulay, who now works for NBC, believes that offensive pass interference should have been called on the field, and that the ruling on no pass interference the field should have been overturned.

  1. These media people are always looking to stir up drama. If anything the defender was grabbing his hands there was no penalty on the play. For crying out loud…

  2. Most of the non calls this game went to New Orleans or the Vikings would have won by two scores. Analyze all the calls not made today and New Orleans did win that part of the game.

  3. Riveron should be honest, and say: “If it had been called on the field, it probably was a push off, and offensive pass interference; but based on the criteria we have been using to overturn such calls, it did not meet the standard, so it was correct not to overturn.”

  4. The Saints had multiple chances to win the game. Brees sack fumbled away on of them.

But the NFL saying that final didnt qualify as OPI is an absolute lie. They are starting to look like a sham league.

  5. In the iggles game the Seahawks tightened see his fingertips to get separation and offensive interference was called

  6. What Rudolph did should never be called offensive PI. If you call that little patty-cake slap on the chest a penalty then football as we know it surely is over.

  7. Williams also had his hand grabbing on Rudy’s hand as well, if you want to call that play. It’s a good no call and shut up, you lost cheaters.

  8. That was a legit win by the vikings. I don’t know why people are even talking about the bad call last season, which was so obvious that they changed the rules for it (and why would you want that to be a non-call?) This year the Saints got bounced for a second time against the Vikings. It’s not karma. It’s not magic. It’s just football, which is how it should be.

  9. Wah Wah Wah. If 2 teams in the league should NEVER whine about officiating, it’s the Aint’s (Bounty Gate, and the only reason they have a SB*) and the Green Bay Charity Case ( their existence).

Both players were making contact and the defender could have been called for DPI as well. They left it up the Booth to review, and they called it as stand. If there was a way to screw Minnesota, they would have done it, plain and simple. If they would have called it as OPI, and they haven’t called it on that play all year, then another conspiracy would have unfolded in the off season.

  10. In the fourth quarter when Cook fumbled and the saints returned it to the end zone, Teddy Bridgewater was running on the field, with no helmet, towards the end zone to celebrate while the play was still going on. So while the Eagles was returning the fumble, he was also on the field. And I mean like 5 yards in from the sideline, check the footage. Even thought the fumble was reversed, that has to be a penalty?

  11. Look at the replay, DB starts the contact after 5 yards. Receivers are allowed to break free of contact. Rudolph is bigger and stronger and got free.

Also if you get pushed in the chest hard your head goes forward not backwards. Try it on a friend if you don’t believe me:)

  12. Hope Riveron is comfortable with Congress getting involved. Millions of dollars are riding on these games, and they can’t take 30 seconds to see a clear push off. NFL =Fifa

  13. Tip o’ the hat to the Vikes. Hope to see you at Lambeau.

The Saints have absolutely the worst luck. Charlie Brown has more fortune with that little red-haired girl.

  14. Well, the defender went from blanket coverage to be pushed about 3 feet away from the TE. If that isnt offensive PI I dont know what is. On the other side, refs let offensive players get away with that all the time.

  15. This is exactly why fans no longer trust the officiating in the NFL. Riveron is a joke and the officiating is suspect and not on the up and up.

  16. This just in: Al Riveron’s performance doesn’t rise to the level of competence.

  17. Seriously, can the Saints just accept their whoppin’ like men?? What a sorry franchise and fan base. Always need an excuse.

  18. Let the players play and not a disputed call (again, right Saints?) determine the outcome. Sick of all these “by the letter of the rule, that’s a foul.” It’s similar to basketball when a player gets touched and heads to the ground. This happens on every play but like basketball, things get called differently in the playoffs. Sorry NO, NO SUPE FOR YOU!

  19. I’m NO Queenie fan, BUT they dominated the Saints in every phase of the game and deserved to win. Championship teams don’t leave it up to the refs. They go out and WIN.

Today the Saints failed in this regard.

  20. I dont expect any sympathy from our COMPETITION…yall too funny. A tad hypocritical

  21. The worst call of many bad ones this week was the blindside block called against Bills to take them out of field goal range in overtime. Referees are so inconsistent it had lead to a downgrade of a great game.

  22. My favorite New Orleans traditions: great Jazz, Mardi Gras, beads, King Cake, Bourbon Street, gumbo and Saints fans complaining about NFL officials.

  23. Lets talk about the other push offs before that! Crock of bs as far as I am concerned! Mcauley is full of it and no wonder he is not ref no more!

  24. “Al Riveron must be the NFL’s point man with the mob.”

Vikings beat the spread by 13.5 points. They were guaranteed to beat the spread when it went into ot.

    Derp.

  25. I can’t say I disagree and I’m glad they are letting them play and not throwing flags on every play. However, about 3 or 4 weeks ago for one week they started changing the way they called and reviewed PI which puzzled everyone.
It is about time the NFL gets a grasp on officiating and sets a standard to where there is some accountability for poorly officiated games.
The better team today won and there is no disputing that.
The Saints would of gone further in the playoffs though.
Cousins just played the game of his life so get ready for a letdown next game.

  26. it’s just so inconsistently called is the issue. just saw hollister on the hawks called for less as OPI. neither should have been called IMO.

  27. “AINT’T” nothing tainted, the Vikings were beating them almost the entire game & finished it off when they needed to.
    We like that! Skol Vikings!

  28. I agree with the non-call, but Hollister got an OPI on a very similar looking play in the Eagles-Seahawks game. So it does meet the standard. Or it doesn’t. You can’t be good with not calling it in one case and calling it in another.

  29. The receiver is looking up for the ball and reaching out to locate the DB.

The DB is running as fast as he can to catch up to the receiver, and not turning to look for the ball.

    That was a correct non-call.

On to San Fran…Shades of 87?

  30. There should have been a penalty on the league for not stopping the game to celebrate another BS regular season dome passing milestone: no Saints game is complete without one of those.

  31. I’m curious Brady was criticized by the Media for the lose will Brees also be put on the spot.My opinion he should get even more blame than Brady. Brady has Sanu Rookie Harry and 32 year old slot reciever Elderman.Brees has Thomas Cook amd Kamara no excuses for him.

  32. I’m not even sweating that play. Saints never should have allowed Thielen behind the defense on the play to set that up. It is what it is.

  33. I thought the Seahawks were the big whiners, but I forgot about New Orleans…this is how they cover up years of post-season failure by their HOF QB.

Honestly, he’s “Mr. Regular Season” since the SB win. Sad to see him go for stats.

Viking fans not complaining about this bad call.
    ———-
Come on man you shirt is still wet from all the tears your fans still shed about Barr’s legal hit on Aaron.

  35. Mike Pereira in the FOX booth reckoned a lot of the early calls against the Vikings were wrong including a Saints offside on the early Cook fumble that led to a Saints FG. Not saying all the bad calls went one way but there’s a difference between bias and incompetence. I do think the NFL should pick the best rated crews for officiating in the play offs not the best individuals flung together to work together for possibly the first time.

  36. receiver fully extends his arm to get separation to make a catch. Seems like pi. That being said, Saints had a missed fg, turnovers and horrible game management at the end of regulation so they can’t pin this on the refs. The casual approach at the end of regulation where they didn’t seem to even be trying to do anything other than field goal range was head scratching.

  37. I like Drew Brees but he is all hype. He puts up good Numbers in the reg season but not in the playoffs. He has reg season stats and one super bowl and thats about it.

  38. I guess being an 8-point favorite isn’t based on the quality of the team. Is there another reason for the obvious Faux Pas by the odds makers?

  39. Was it OPI? Maybe, maybe not. But saints fans realize this was hardly an egregious no call in any event. The goal is to fix the obvious screw ups like the rams game not parse game by frame. The fact is the Vikings made the plays they needed to make today, no complaints from this saints fan.

Called a lesser OPI than that against Jake Kumerow.
    ———
Who is that, the guy from the insurance commercials? Is that how he and Aaron know each other. Seriously, it doesn’t matter the league, most nobodies will not get as many advantageous calls. Lebron in the NBA, Brady in the NFL, Keyshawn in MLB: Once you’ve done something you get a little more leeway, few if any outside of the Sheboygan VFW know or care about Jake whatever his name is.

  41. At the very least, Al Riveron should be replaced. NFL fans do not trust his competence. Failure to properly evaluate critical penalties – including decisions to not conduct a detailed booth review in NY – won’t cut it. Game deciding PI no calls at end of SF-Seattle reg season game and MN-NO playoff game were improperly handled by ignoring NY booth reviews.

  42. Wait…you mean to tell me Saints fans are complaining about officiating again? Quick, somebody call a wambulance!

  43. Packer trolls on here talking about calls. LOL. How about rewatching the Lions-Packer game earlier this season. Don’t worry, the nation already saw it..

  44. nynj1986

You mentioned the extended arm of Rudolph but not PJ Williams grabbing Rudolph’s arm Why? They both were battling and the little guy lost. As soon as they lined up you could see that would happen. I hoped they would throw to Rudolph because of the clear mismatch. Bad defense to be in.

  45. Here’s the solution to officiating: stop hiring old fat white dudes who aren’t elite athletes. 4 games have had awful officiating with multiple times each game with officials out of position and making guesstimating calls. NFL can solve this. At the NFL combine, recruit undrafted players to be full time referees who will do a 8 month training program to study and learn att lower levels. Develop a rules assessment weekly and have them be near elite athletes who PLAYED FOOTBALL not guys who are Principals and Attorneys during the week. NFL current system is hiring McDonalds line shift people for head chef at Michelin Star restaurants

  46. It’s fine, we sucked and didn’t deserve to win anyway.

Of course, there will be tons of people on here claiming that Saints fans are ‘whining’ about it when no such thing is really happening, but whatever. Trolls are trolls and they will troll.

  47. You’ll have to forgive Vikings fans, Saints fans.

They’re notorious for blaming the refs if they lose, even if the game is called fairly. But when the refs are clearly on the Vikes payroll, they say “it looked fine to me.”

They’re just out of touch with reality.

  48. Saints have a big decision do they pay Brees a lot of money when his arm is clearly shot? Hill was more effective today why break the bank for Drew?

  49. Same crap different day. This non-review was as predictable an outcome as knowing the Vikings and Falcons will never win the Super bowl.

  50. Look. Nobody and I mean nobody picked the Vikings to win so let’s do what we do best and see if we cant find a reason to justify their win and our inability to accept the fact that the Vikings deserved a better odds rating of competing in this game. Get over it.

  51. I am a Vikings fan and almost felt bad for the Saints and their fans. Three consecutivevtough losses is hard. But if you replay the game, on one of the Vikings field goals the camera angle from behind the net showing the ball come through the uprights also showed two fans giving the camera the middle finger with both hands. CLASSY. I guess I don’t feel so bad anymore.

  52. Actually, it is fun for Packer fans to give it to the the Viking crybabies. The ref calls have favored them all year and they have the nerve to squeal about the Packers. It is fun indeed to point out their incredible hypocrisy.

  55. Watched the game. Saw the play live and didn’t see the push. Saw the replay and saw both players a little handsy and saw a push away by Rudolph. I’m wont to say the officials blew the call, because, honestly, I think they just suck. Then again, there has always been a problem with the LIGHTING in that dome and maybe its hard for the officials to see it all. So I’m open to interpretation here.

Viking fans not complaining about this bad call./////

Why would they? Like packer fans complain when they get the calls. You have had 3 DPI’s called on the packers all year. Your packer team has benefited from more 1st downs through penalties than any team in the NFL by a wide margin. Did you feel bad about the Lions game? No you actually said they were the right calls.

  57. Vikings fans think it is great when their team gets the calls. Look out if the Vikings opponent gets a call though. You’ll never hear more whining unless you are in a hospital nursery full of newborn babies. Even then it is close to the same.

  58. If the defender never came into contact with the receiver, it would’ve definitely been OPI. However, it’s pretty obvious he was very handsy throughout the entire play. Good no call. Let them play.

First, I didn’t say Rudolph got away with anything as the officials and seemingly all non packer fans seem to acknowledge. I used Lebron as the extreme of how some guys get away with things and you can’t expect some nobody who hasn’t accomplished anything in the league like Kumerow to get calls. I used the NBA and MLB as examples as if you watch either there are things like traveling and size of strike zones that you may get the benefit of the doubt when you’re a better players. Comparing Kumerow to anyone outside of the XFL is ludicrous.

  61. Brees is a class act but I can’t stand the Saints! That said the TE fully extended his arm… that was clear OPI. The league stuck it to the Saints and was obvious about t but by not even reviewing the call. Glad they lost! The NFL is corrupt.

Lol. Good to know that Tony Dungy, Rodney Harrison, and a bunch of other professionals who actually worked/played in the league (and viewed the play as OPI) are Packers fans. Must be why the Packers “always” get the calls to go their way. Learning so much today!

  67. Obviously Riveron’s credibility has been shot since early this year, but it did actually surprise me that they announced they weren’t going to look at it. You want to kill the conspiracy theories at least look at the play.

  68. NFL rules are subject to interpretation. In other words, they can mean anything. How convenient.

  69. I, for one, am going to do my best to congratulate the Vikings and their refs on a hard fought win in New Orleans. I really didn’t think your refs would be able to help you win this game. But the Saints weren’t as good as I thought, so your refs were indeed enough to help.

I was wrong. I can admit it.

  70. I do not think it was enough to be pass interference. But, it is inexcusable, on a TD in an OT game, to not actual review it. By deciding there is not enough for a booth review, they are essentially reviewing it in a few seconds instead of taking a minute or two to actually be sure. I don’t think it would have changed anything, as they have been loath to overturn any calls, but they should absolutely review any OT score with even the smallest iota of a possible question on a call.

  71. No dog in this fight, but I sure hope that we’re not going to have to listen to various members of the Saints organization complain that they got screwed by the officials again. The Vikings wanted that game more than they did. End of story.

Good for you little guy! Progress, measured in anyway is still progress. Unfortunately you misinterpret ref help for bad karma. Re visit wiki if needed but cheating Sean and his Bounty Band of Brothers only got what was coming to them after being bested by the Vikings. As to ref help? They did try to help the Saint’s when 84 was clearly mauled earlier in the game. Nonetheless. Karma little man. Karma.

    I am right.

  73. Riveron is in over his head. He was an incompetent referee, and he only has this job because he is incompetent. He’s willing to do whatever Goodell tells him to do and say, and that makes him easy to manipulate. He’s a stooge. His public proclamations usually sound like those of Baghdad Bob.

The Saints did not lose because of this call. But it’s pretty bad when you have two former referees turned TV analysts say it should have been OPI, and this stooge gets up and says the play was called correctly.

The officiating is horrible and the replay system is a total joke. I am sick of seeing the outcome of games being determined by the officials.
I dislike the Saints but c’mon — how many times can one team get screwed in the playoffs?
The NFL has become a joke in so many ways — none more than the way games are officiated.

  77. once again the mystery man in NY decides a game. this time by not making the call.

To many games this season decided by the Refs and the mystery man in NY. NFL is the new NBA, a total joke.

  78. There could at least 10 more finishes like this for the Saints and it would not equate the collective outrageousness that led to their 2009 NFC Championship win – not even including the bounty nonsense. The sequence of bad calls and spots and no calls that ended that game made it look like Tony Soprano was in charge.

Come on, that’s not true. Everyone knows why he has the job, don’t try and make it acceptable.

I’m a Viking fan and I did not “whine all season” about the officiating. Now packer fans always making stuff up is true example: you.

  84. Somebody find my post this week where I said the game could very well come down to whoever has the ball last. Or would you rather read all the Packer troll posts saying; whatever it is they say.
    ——
Even on a day when your team gets just it’s second playoff win since the Favre years, the only two posts you make to this story are talking about the Packers and their trolls. Hilarious and oblivious.

  85. First things first, Saints got beat up front for 80% of the game and the play calling was horrible. Second thing, why didnt the Saints call a time out before the TD play? Call a timeout, get your personnel together and get the stop. Now as for the TD, there is no doubt it should have been reviewed. Anytime a player defensive or offensive extends their hands to create separation it should be called. Hand contact, a little pushing inside or contact is just football. The NFL once again has shown that it will put who it wants where it wants. For instance, there will always be a California team in the running. The big market teams get the glory. $$$$$

  86. Does anyone know what the criteria for DPI or OPI is at this point?

A hand to the chest and fully extended arm was deemed a push off worthy of OPI not so long ago. Not any more. So, is it 2 hands now? Is it knocking the DB to the ground? Not sure that officials even look for OPI anymore.

DPI used to be called for wrapping an arm around a receiver or playing the receiver instead of the ball. Not any more. Both are pretty common now and never called. DPI now is allegedly about grabbing hard enough/long enough to turn the receiver, but it must rise to some vague level of severity before it’s worthy of a call.

Officiating pass interference has become a joke. Yes, the Saints rule change has been a disaster, but PI officiating was a train wreck even before that. It has been apparent for some time that the NFL needs to fix officiating. They’ve done nothing to address it and the game continues to decline as a result.

  87. There’s a difference between hands-fight for position and fully extending your arm while shoving the defender square in the chest. Clear OPI.

  88. How about this angle I haven’t heard from Vikings fans yet? The Packer refs were there to make sure the Vikings won and remained in the playoffs.

Lol. Good to know that Tony Dungy, Rodney Harrison, and a bunch of other professionals who actually worked/played in the league (and viewed the play as OPI) are Packers fans. Must be why the Packers “always” get the calls to go their way. Learning so much today!

Wait two former defensive backs take the defensive backs side, what a shocking piece of info. Not sure who “a bunch of other professionals” around, but the final score is the final score despite your pile of tears.

  91. I think I speak for all longtime Vikings fans when I say “if Drew Pearson didn’t push off in 1975, then Kyle Rudolph didn’t push off in this game”.

  92. That merited a review, I am surprised they did not at least make a show of it. However, per the standards that were lightly enforced this year I’ll repeat what someone else already posted: that call gets overturned 0 out of 100 times.

  93. There was definitely an opi pushoff by Rudolph. I think if the defender had done the same and Rudolph doesn’t make the catch, they call defensive pass interference

  94. Dear all whiners. Maybe he should have been called maybe he should not have. It is the way it goes. For S and G’s lets just give people the benefit of the doubt here. We will take the touchdown away which then would make the score 20-20. Then what we have to do is go waaay back to the 4th play of the game in which adam thielin fumbled resulting in 3 for the Saints. If you look very closely the play should have been called dead due to false start so then we would take the 3 pts away from the Saints which would make the score 20-17 in favor of the beloved. On a personal note, I do not dislike the saints or anything like that I just like good plain football the way it used to be played but unfortunately the days of the purple people eaters, orange crush and the steel curtain are gone.

    Have at it .

    100% correct!
    a reasoned arguement!

  96. You mentioned the extended arm of Rudolph but not PJ Williams grabbing Rudolph’s arm Why? They both were battling and the little guy lost.

A fellow by the name of Rob Gronkowski would love to have a word with you. Are you saying that since the DB had his hands on the receiver, that it’s ok for him to push off? If that’s the case, then OPI should never be called.

The problem here is that people are confusing 2 issues – yes, the Saints played terribly and didn’t deserve to win, but that doesn’t mean that the NFL shouldn’t have at least reviewed that play for possible OPI.

Al Riveron coming out later and saying there was nothing there to even look at is somewhat incredulous, based on what they’ve been calling (or not calling) this year.

  97. Riveron used the same words for the play at the end of the Sea/SF game. There was a lot more contact there, with the defender holding the receivers arms down so he couldn’t get to the ball. So by that standard, no PI. Of course, none of the PI’s that were called this weekend should have been called, of the Sea/SF play is the standard.

The reality is that Riveron and the league office don’t want this experiment with PI to succeed. So they’re purposely screwing it up at every opportunity, to “prove” that it doesn’t work (despite the fact that it works in Canada just fine). The real question is whether the owners will recognize this and take action to fix the real problem, or if they will just give in and end the experiment.

Officiating pass interference has become a joke. Yes, the Saints rule change has been a disaster, but PI officiating was a train wreck even before that. It has been apparent for some time that the NFL needs to fix officiating. They’ve done nothing to address it and the game continues to decline as a result.

They just keep making more rules, or the existing rules more complex, even though the refs can’t adequately enforce the ones they have now. Heck, in the Eagles/Seahawks game, they completely missed an offsides by Philly, and an illegal shift (TE in motion turning upfield before the snap). If they can’t even spot these obvious pre-snap infractions, we’re supposed to trust them to instantly decide whether the push-off was significant enough to hinder the opponent or offer an advantage and therefore rise to the level of a foul?

    —————-__———-
So you’re saying other teams need to take a hint from the Packers and play more disciplined football.

  100. I’m not arguing for or against the call. I’m a Vikings fan and am usually in the other side. The thing I believe the league is trying to do, is to stop the flop. What’s the worst thing about soccer? The flop. To me, the saints CB embellished a little.
