Kirk Cousins leads Vikings over the Saints in overtime

Getty Images

This time, the miracle might have been that the Vikings survived themselves.

After playing it safe heading into overtime, the Vikings ended the wild card game on the first possession, beating the Saints by making the biggest plays in the biggest moments.

Much-maligned (and often-deserved) Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins hit Adam Thielen for a 43-yard bomb, setting up a touchdown pass to Kyle Rudolph two plays later for the win.

The Vikings will now travel to face the 49ers next week in the divisional round.

It was a gratifying end for Cousins, on a day when their defense and running back Dalvin Cook did most of the heavy lifting.

Cook, who had missed the last two games of the regular season with a shoulder injury, returned to rush for 94 yards and two touchdowns.

Meanwhile, their defense made Saints quarterback Drew Brees an afterthought for large stretches of the game.

Brees struggled throughout the day, finishing with 208 yards with a touchdown and an interception. That forced the Saints to go to a heavier-than-normal dose of Taysom Hill, who responded. Hill threw a 50-yard pass, caught a touchdown, and had a number of impressive runs (and blocks) along the way.

They forced overtime as the Vikings played it safe, but Cousins never let them have the ball back in the extra session, quieting much of the criticism for a guy who has struggled in prime time and hadn’t won a playoff game.

Until today.

For the Saints, it was just their second home loss in the playoffs under coach Sean Payton, but their second in a row after last year’s NFC Championship Game loss to the Rams. It will also create questions about the future, with Brees about to turn 41.

  1. The Saints are the most dangerous team sitting at home watching the playoffs unfold…again.

  2. Karms for the saints for signing janoris jenkins and for kicking the tires of AB. Enjoy the offseason, losers!

  3. All my friends, my Packers fans, you pretty much guaranteed that the Vikings would lose. Now our Packer delusion has grown. With another epic letdown ahead.

  4. Great win for the Vikings. Hopefully this ends the “Cousins can’t win a big game” talk.

  5. OPI…OPI..OPI… the Vikings deserved the victory. But what is OPI anymore? Did he or did he not push off to create separation????

  6. Vikings deserved this win. They played great on offense and defense. I’m glad the Packers don’t have to play them (yet.) Cook is indescribable. Thielen is indescribable.

  7. How that catch doesn’t get reviewed for the push off is beyond me. The push clearly moved the defender. Once again the saints exit the playoffs on a very questionable no call. I’m not even a fan, I’m just disappointed they would let the game end on that. Takes away from the Viking win and doesn’t allow the saints the dignity of losing with their heads up.

  8. I don’t wanna hear anything about a push off when the corner was all over Rudy. The receiver has every right to fight off contact. It was a great game saints fans. Congrats on a good season.
    SKOL!!!!!

  9. Saints fans whining and crying for a flag AFTER the game was over, hoping to force some weak-willed ref to do something panicky, was a new low for the franchise.

    Pathetic!

  10. Drew Brees comes up short again. Ironic that it happened against the QB with the current reputation of being the biggest choke artist in the NFL. Happy for Kirk Cousins. Those were two big-time throws to win that game.

  11. Well you know the refs wanted Green Bay to somehow benefit from this game so they must have assumed the Packers would rather host the winner of this next game so they let the last OPI go uncalled.

  12. That was a great game with a helluva finish. Rudolph definitely pushed off, but it wasn’t enough for a reversal obviously. Congrats to the Vikes….good luck in SF.

  13. The experts were all wrong.

The folks saying Cousins couldn’t deliver in the clutch were wrong.

The Packer fans claiming the Vikes would be “one and done” were wrong.

On to San Francisco for the right to play in the NFC Championship game.

  14. Get ready for Sean Peyton to lobby to change ot rules now.

Watching him and BB lose this weekend just breaks my heart.
    /s

  15. Hats off to the Vikes. Played tough all game and the TD drive in OT was a redeemer for Cousins. So far all the playoff games have been exciting to watch…

  16. Kirk Cousins and the refs. The officiating was critical in the Vikings victory. The refs made the calls at the right time. I wonder how much the Vikings paid them?

  17. Why is it every playoff game between these two teams causes me a to almost have a heart attack?

Glad the Vikings pulled through after no one gave them a chance. Props to the Saints for a terrific game to watch for all the fans of the NFL. Wow.

I must say, it was so worth it seeing smug Sean Payton with that dirty smirk wiped off his face..

  18. Brees never got the ball in OT.

Time to change the rules or something- at least I was told that’s how it works.

  19. Here comes the saints crying for a push off flag. Brees chokes again. Should’ve kept #7 as the qb for the whole game. He’s unstoppable.

  20. That was a nice win for the Vikings. Everyone had the Saints blowing them out. Had the Saints went to the SB and won, I would have expected Brees to retire, but what now?

  21. Congrats to minisoda. They seem to have the NoLa’s number. The Saints made a bunch of mistakes late again.

awaiting Mike’s article complaining about the OT format
    ———————————————————————————————————-
Good point, but that is only a topic if NE wins a game in OT. Otherwise everyone is cool with it.

  23. Vikings can’t win without Cheating. The Fumble that should have been a Touchdown, Cook was not down by the way & the Pushoff on the Overtime Touchdown. Cheating Vikings, they can’t win without cheating.

  24. Vikings had to battle two squads, the saints and the one in stripes and still won!
Dominated saints on every level. Class of the NFL.
The 49ers are in trouble next week then its on to the SuperBowl!
    SKOL!!!

  25. We’ve had quite a few good games already during these playoffs. Payton has plenty of time to chat with that butcher now. Now the big question is how many more next years are you gonna have Saints? 3rd year in a row dang. I guess we’ll find out. That was an interesting game

  26. Now we gotta listen to the Saints fans again for the next year cry about a call they didn’t get in the end zone….Waaaa Waaaa Waaaa….WAY TO GO VIKINGS!!

  27. I think most of the people were rooting for the Vikings after the pitiful offseason drama and victim fairy tale orchestrated by the Saints organization and their fans. I´m one of them, so….great job Vikings!

  28. 99.99% of people on PFT comment boards said the Saints would beat the Vikings by 17+. All I have to say is “Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints?” Kirk ‘fricken’ Cousins and the Minnesota Vikings…dat’s who! SKOLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. I’m just gonna sip this wine and look at a freeze frame of Payton’s smug look for a while. Life is good.

  30. Not saying Taysom Hill is a better QB, but he was certainly the better weapon today with the ball in his hands than Drew Brees. Just way too ineffective by the future Hall of Famer.

  31. Annnnnd once again the Saints are jobbed at the end. Rudolph clearly pushes off to make the catch.
I have no skin in the game other than the officiating continues to be BS from the regular season thru the playoffs. Buffalo got hosed yesterday, too.
    Maybe no review(s) because the outcome(s) is/are Park Ave.s’ desired one(s)?

  32. This is hysterical. The ever underachieving Cheese curds head’s must be simultaneously exploding. The whodats only title was against the only bigger Big Game choker than Brees. DB9, all numbers, no results.

  33. Nice to see Cousins win a big game. Good thing it wasn’t in prime time.

And of course, it’s always good to see Payton and Brees lose.

And it also means the Seahawks play Green Bay next weekend instead of the whiners.

Speaking of whiners, imagine if the Packers played the Vikings in the NFC title game. It would be the Whine Bowl.

  34. diveleft says:
Great win for the Vikings. Hopefully this ends the “Cousins can’t win a big game” talk.
    ==

    It won’t, and it shouldn’t.
Kirk Cousins played a very good game, saved his biggest throw for the biggest moment, and he was the winning QB in a big game. Props to him. But after an NFL career of futility in the spotlight, one victory doesn’t end the narrative.
It’s a great start, but he’s going to have to win several big games to make his negative reputation fade. If he goes to San Francisco and stinks up the joint the cries will be louder than ever. That’s not trolling, just human nature truth.

  35. If a Vikings victory means I don’t have to read another “but, but, the REFS!!!” post from the purple’s again, then I’m all for it.

  36. That was the first time this year that the Vikings beat a team that ended the season with a winning record. Anything can happen in the playoffs! Skol

  37. Purpleguy … Conner …. Congrats! Big win for your guys. That D made Brees look pedestrian.

I really hope Stefanki gets hired by the Browns. This guy always gets too cute for his own good. Terrible play calling most of the 2nd half

  41. Congrats to the Vikings on a tough win. As a Packers fan I’m appreciative of not having to face the Saints.

Having said that, I hope that the non-call on the Rudolph push-off diminishes some of the “refs are always against us” rants. Calls go both ways over time. I say this sincerely, not as a trolling attempt.

  42. Obvious DEFENSIVE PI. Defender never looked for the ball and held the arm of the reciever. Saints fans can bite it. You whiners. The true team of the Cupcake Generation.

As to Cousins’ haters, bite it too. You idiots.

Glad to see the Vikings move on. To the Saints… you’ve practiced whining for an entire offseason and now you have perfect practice to blame your team’s pathetic performance today on someone else. Oh, cry me a river!

  43. If that wasn’t a push-off by Rudolph in the end zone, what is? He clearly extended the arm.

I thought the Saints were better than this on defense. Drew Brees’ two turnovers didn’t help either.

  44. It will also create questions about the future, with Brees about to turn 41.
    ========================================

Brees is going nowhere. But Payton may be going to DFW, where he moved his family in 2011.

  45. Can’t wait to hear Sean Payton whining all off season about how Rudolph pushed off and there was no review and boy do we need a rules change cuz it’s sooooooooo unfair!

  46. The Saints lost this game for two reasons.

First, Drew Brees and his two turnovers. The INT gave the Vikings the lead at halftime. The fumbled killed a potentially game-winning drive.

Second, the Saints secondary was terrible. Minnesota could have had Betty White playing WR and she would have been open all day. Their front seven played well enough to win but the secondary let them down.

I had no dog in this fight so I didn’t really care who won. The Saints can’t expect to play that poorly and win. When you have an offense that turns the ball over and a defense who can’t stop anyone, you aren’t going to win.

  47. LOL 3 years in a row for the Saints to fail. None of there mighty weapons did much today.

  48. Payton’s game management was awful. Never seemed like they were playing for a td at the end of regulation and you have to use the timeout and save the 10 seconds. As a Packers fan, give Cousins credit. Those were two clutch throws in money time

  49. Wow. The Saints get screwed again. That pushoff epitomizes Offensive Pass Interference. Bizarre no call and stranger lack of review. Taysom Hill had a great game, Diggs is such a headcase.

  50. I think it’s time for the NFL to just play a full 15 minute overtime period, and stop the sudden death scenario.
You’re going to hear all offseason how the Saints never had a chance in OT.

    ——————

One has to love when the gals start crying about Viking fans commenting on a Vikings/Saints thread.

  52. I wonder what that great thinker, Cam Jordan, has to say about Kirk Cousins’ performance.

Too bad we won’t get to see that rematch of Saints vs 49ers, another one bites the dust….Go Niners!

  53. Awesome. Happy for the Vikings. Glad the Saints and their whiny fans have nobody to blame this year.

  54. Wow. Did not see this coming. Have to hand it to Cousins, he was poised and played well. Cook was a beast. Congratulations Vikings, good luck next week. Another tough match up.

  55. Brees shrunk in the moment today. From the pick to the fumble when they had all of the momentum to not being able to win it on their last possession when they were rolling, he just looked his age today. Plus, you have to remember the Vikings were playing with none of their regulars in the defensive backfield, and he barely could crack the code today. Michael Thomas was the possession receiver who doesn’t scare a defense either today.

  56. Brees has played 3 play off games against the Vikings, I honestly think he’s played well for about 4 quarters. The bounty game he was poor all game, the miracle game he played well 2nd half and tonight he wasn’t exactly great either. I thought tonight would be a case of Brees carving up a patchy Vikes secondary but until Zimmer started playing soft it never happened. Looks like the defence is even more banged up after today but hey we’re still in it.

  57. This is why drew brees was overlooked for the 100th anniversary team. He has not had a memorable career. Why? Because his Saints underachieve in the postseason. They were better than the Rams last year but did everything to keep the Rams in the game and one blatant officiating error away from victory. This year who can deny the Saints seemed like the stronger team all season. To lose at home to the only team with worse postseason fortune — good God. I didn’t even think the NFL had any business playing the game. For the sake if player safety, I thought they’d just award the gane to New Orleans.

  58. All my friends, my Packers fans, you pretty much guaranteed that the Vikings would lose. Now our Packer delusion has grown. With another epic letdown ahead
    —–
Can’t you just enjoy a Viking win without immediately thinking about the Packers. Not a single person talking about GB today except you!

Congrats to the Vikes and their real fans. Good luck in SF!

  59. I said it the whole week. 7 point game against two teams that matched up well. Too many morons that focused on other things. I am right. You were wrong.

  60. I LIKE THAT!

How do you like it johnny the big spot on my toilet paper!

Too bad, all you haters! We were supposed to get smoked according to the experts & haters. Go Vikings!

  61. I posted the Vikes would win based on their offensive weapons having two weeks rest, the d getting two weeks rest and Brees having 6o pass against a fercioys rush a ND did pass defense.
The third string of the vikes almost beat the bears the last week. Zimmer was smart making NO think they were hobbling into this game. They were very unprepared for the Vikes

  62. YOU LIKE THAT? So much for you Packer fans and your 1 and Done! If Minnesota wins next week they WILL represent the NFC in the Super Bowl!
SO happy right now Cousins was CLUTCH today!

  63. Gotta laugh at all the sportstalk show geniuses who assumed the Saints would win easily. Many went so far as to discuss a “Saints/Packers matchup next week” and how it would enhance the legacy of Drew Brees if New Orleans won in Green Bay.

They ripped Kirk Cousins for not being able to perform well enough in big games and based their failed forecast on that hindsight. People with marginal hindsight recall and zero foresight. Congratulations Kirk and the Vikes!

It was the same kind of hand fighting you see on darn near every single pass play.

  65. NFL shows what a joke it is yet again with officiating. Don’t care about either team, but non call OPI to end the game…whatever. NFL can pack sand.

  66. Who Dat Terrible Team? Dem da Saints.
Love that Drew Stats lost because he tried to show that he has a better arm than the Mormon Moron.

  67. Saints had all those weapons and couldn’t do anything without Hill. Vikings were definitely the better team throughout the game. Welcome to the off-season just like us Saints fans!

  68. Brady has all the excuses this year. He won it all last year. He had no weapons on offense. Brees is younger, had Thomas and Kamara, and they were playing a team with about as bad a record in big games as you get. Has Cousins ever defeated a team with a winning record?

  69. I love how Saints fans crying about the refs when they got away with holding all game and had a no call on Bridgewater for going onto the field during a live play.

    #suckit

  70. As much as Rudolph pushed off, the DB was all over him and never turned his head.

Good non-call. It was a clean TD.

Deal with it Saints fans and haters.

  71. Sadly, the Packers are off to the Super Bowl. There’s no one left to stop them until then. We are huge fans who cheer for them every season . . . to lose. Every year, their final game is our Super Bowl, except the years they’ve won it. Thankfully we’ve had more years of celebration. Hopefully, this is another year where we get to cork the champagne.

  72. This win should be shoved in the face of two sets of losers: the ones that said Zimmer can’t coach, and the ones that said the Vikes would be one and done.

I predict Drew will look like he is 30 today and in his prime against a very poor Minnesota secondary. Talk of retirement for Brees will not be a topic after this game.

It is highly unlikely that Brees or Brady retire before next season, but I realize that you are trying to divert attention away from the fact that your Vikings are about to end another season with total failure. A season that you proclaimed in July would be a “magical” season for the Vikings.

    That’s a huge turnaround in 5 minutes…

  76. Vikings will be travelling to Frisco. Winner of the Eagles/Dorks match will be flying to Mr. Rodgers’ neighborhood.

  77. Well, I definitely think it’s obvious to anybody that’s not drinking the purple Kool-Aid, that the NFL is desperately trying to manufacture the Vikings first championship.

One only has to give some of these games a cursory look to come to this conclusion.

I mean, after years of stumbling through season after mediocre season and still not being able to win one for themselves, the NFL has it’s eyes and interests in having a first time champion ring in their 100th season.
Great for Barney fans everywhere, but oh so sad for the legitimate, hard working teams that have an uphill officiating battle to contend with.
Good luck, Niner fans, looks like you’re next to get screwed.

  78. That Cousins pass to Thielen was incredible, as was the catch. I think a lot of us take what these pros do for granted. There is a reason they are pros. I couldn’t do either that throw or that catch if I had 500 chances.

You missed a third set, the ones who said Cousins could never win in the post season.

  80. So nice that the whining Cupcake Saints fans’ seem to miss that the defender never looked for the ball and grabbed the arm of the receiver. Your player was no saint (pun intended). Saints’ fans have become professional whiners. Unless they get their way every time (regardless of whether they actually committed a foul in the process) then they whine.

It is now official – the NFL 100 gift this year is that the Saints fan whine is an officially recognized happening and it goes goes with the game.

Meanwhile the real world passes them by while they sit on the turf crying like babies.

  81. The play calling in the second half for the Vikings was terrible. Cook up the middle Cook around the end and screen passes against a good screen pass team. I think they know how to defend it. The conservative approach let the Saints back in the game.

  82. Funny how Vikings fans get all salty when I come on their team stories and blame the refs for their win. I have do e it all day and got down voted like crazy. LOL. I sounded like a whiny moron, didn’t I? Now you Vikings fans know how you sound going into Packers threads doing all that whining.

Vikings actually held it together for the whole game and outplayed the Saints on both sides of the ball. Now they have a challenge of going out west to play a really good 49ers team. Viking could win the whole thing if they can put together a few more performances like today.

  83. Forget the alleged push-off. If the NO kicker hadn’t missed the FG before half-time, they would have won by three in regulation. He shanked it to the right.

  84. Hats off to Vikings defense, but Sean Payton is brutal, with that talent, and comes up short again. Nice that he saved his timeout, and wasted it. He could have used it and saved 10 seconds, although that rule is stupid.

  85. Wha wha wha…even all the pro’s said it wasn’t enough to call. But, go ahead and cry me a river. Bounty Gate Sean and the rest of that cheating team can pound sand. On a positive note, all of that stripper bling you wear in NO is still useful.

  86. Officially rooting for the Vikings to win the Superbowl. Only team left who I don’t hold a grudge against. And they eliminated the Aints. Hats off to them!

  87. Imagine if the Vikings actually win somethign of some significance. I undertand the excitement, but stil just a WC win. There’s a long way to go.

  88. Oh so in this game the Vikings are perfectly fine with those refs they’ve been complaining about. Funny how they’re perfectly fine with the no call on that push off score.

  89. I think it’s time for the NFL to just play a full 15 minute overtime period, and stop the sudden death scenario.
You’re going to hear all offseason how the Saints never had a chance in OT.

You won’t hear this Saints fan saying that. If the Saints had done their job, it wouldn’t have needed OT.

@purpleguy – Agreed but you forgot the 3rd set (which included almost of the media and this here site) that said Cousins couldn’t win a big game.

  93. This Packers fan was absolutely thrilled with the Vikings win. Hope they can keep the momentum going and take out the 49ers next week. The Packers have to play smarter and better and get a win next week as well. I would love to see a Packers/Vikings rematch in Green Bay: no hate, no trash talking, just good rivalry football!

Oh, and watching Sean Peyton’s team take a loss was a joyous experience.

  94. What really bothers those Cupcake Saints fans is that it was a touchdown pass by Kirk Cousins that beat them. Imagine the multiple sense of outrage from the Cupcake brigade to have a guy who hasn’t beaten a winning team on the road this year, who hasn’t won a playoff game, and who outplayed the New Orleans starting QB during this game. And btw, the INT thrown in this game was by the New Orleans starting QB, not Cousins. Oh, the pain. Oh, the burn. Oh, the triple whammy of insult. With a sense of professional whining from this game, Saints fans might not ever get out of bed, change the sheets, or be able to face reality ever again.

    Oh, the thought…

  95. PI is the gift that keeps on giving.

If a DB had created separation like that it would have been called.

Having said that. What happens to Brees’s common sense in the playoffs? Every year he’s forced a throw leading to points.

  96. To the silly people talking about the Vikings getting the calls what about:
    1. The non holding call on Rudolph in the first half.
    2. The unnecessary roughness on Cook by Klein when the screen pass was incomplete.
    3. Another unnecessary roughness penalty on Klein that could have been called in the 3rd quarter.
    4. The block in the back on the long return by the saints’ Thomas.
    5. The uncalled illegal procedure on the Vikings that cost them 8 yards on the play in the first half.
So if you think the Vikings got an unfair benefit of the calls today you don’t watch that closely or really don’t know what you’re talking about.
On the game winning TD the cb was grabbing the entire play.
No official crew is ever going to call those ticky tacky touches on a play that significant.
So go on hating as long as you want, soak in, burn up in it, we dont care! Skol Vikings!

  97. If any team deserved to lose at the hands of the refs it’s Sean Payton and his band of bounty hunters. Unfortunately they can’t use that excuse since the Vikings instead just out worked the Saint’s today. Mostly the Saint’s QB can’t beat the Vikings, in prime time, big games, with one exception. The bounty gate game.

  98. From a Saints fan, congrats to you Vikings fans. Your team did their job today. To all you Saints haters, ya’ll need to shut up and let us mourn the end of our season in peace. Nobody likes someone who acts like a butthole. This one hurts, and it shows what I’ve believed all season, and that is we needed a #2 receiver. Ted Ginn is done and needs to be cut today. Our team has been through adversity the last 3 seasons and managed to climb back out of the hole. We will do so again next year. Until then, hope the fans of the teams still standing enjoy the rest of the playoffs. WHO DAT!!

  99. So much for Kirk Cousins not even being ranked in the top 12 QBs in the playoffs, and this being the easiest game to predict, and a big Saints blowout.

    Congrats PFT bozos.

    Skol.

  100. Enough of the “Bad ref calls” whinning! The defense came to play, #33 was great, Cousins did what he is capable of doing, and my man, #19, made the catch of the season! SKOLL!!!

  101. “How that catch doesn’t get reviewed for the push off is beyond me. The push clearly moved the defender. Once again the saints exit the playoffs on a very questionable no call. I’m not even a fan, I’m just disappointed they would let the game end on that. Takes away from the Viking win and doesn’t allow the saints the dignity of losing with their heads up.”

Um……all the pundits say that was a good no call and the type of play that would not be turned over…..do you watch football???

  102. Everyone complaining about the push off by Rudolph. Yes he pushed off with one hand but that is not EVER called unless it is a two hand, arms extended push. The one hand push off has’t been called all year so it wouldn’t be called now. Rudolph never touched the defender with the other hand. The non-call was correct.

  103. YOU LIKE THAT? So much for you Packer fans and your 1 and Done! If Minnesota wins next week they WILL represent the NFC in the Super Bowl!
SO happy right now Cousins was CLUTCH today!

I can speak for 99% of actual Vikings fans:
This team is done. It’s been a total failure with Cousins. Start over. This franchise is a joke. Cousins is the worst free agent signing in NFL history. The defense is old and over the hill. Firesale this entire roster for picks and start over…again.
Anybody that says otherwise is simply a troll or an idiot like flviking.
Packer, Bear, and Lion fans: enjoy dominating the division this year and next year. Who knows what 2021 brings but the Vikings will be a bottom 10 NFL team in 2019 and 2020

I love the classics, don’t you free?

Oh contraire, we will be fine. I love my Saints but it’s the Lord Jesus Christ who gets me out of bed in the mornings not my excitement over my team. I’m happy for Cousins. As a Christian it’s nice to see another sibling in Christ succeed.

Brady has all the excuses this year. He won it all last year. He had no weapons on offense. Brees is younger, had Thomas and Kamara, and they were playing a team with about as bad a record in big games as you get. Has Cousins ever defeated a team with a winning record?
    *****
He did today! Cousins is 1-0 vs Brees in the playoffs. You like that?

  108. When threads get this deep in comments it comes down to mostly talki8ng about your biggest rival and not the game. So on that note, thanks Saints for grabbing Taysom Hill from the Packers. That guy scared me way more than Brees during this game.

  109. The Saints are unredeemable without Brees and easily the most hate-able without him, including the Patriots.

    It’s a beautiful day.

I believe the 49ers will have something to say about that. After that SNF game in October, how could you possibly think the Packers path to the SB is that easy?

I predict Drew will look like he is 30 today and in his prime against a very poor Minnesota secondary. Talk of retirement for Brees will not be a topic after this game.

It is highly unlikely that Brees or Brady retire before next season, but I realize that you are trying to divert attention away from the fact that your Vikings are about to end another season with total failure. A season that you proclaimed in July would be a “magical” season for the Vikings.

    Poor Barney
    (((((((((((()))))))))))))))))))))(((()))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

How is that Crow tasting about right about now???????????????????????????

  113. To all the Saints fans complaining about the refs (again)…maybe your team should spend less time whining about the refs and more time beating teams they are supposed to beat. Vegas made the Saints 8.5 favorites and almost every expert said the Saints would win by double-digits. If your team was as good as everyone said it was, there would never have to be an issue with the refs.
Also, did the refs help Brees throw an interception and fumble? Did the refs help the Vikings make that spectacular throw and catch to Thielen in OT?
Once again the Saints and their fans will be home after getting bounced from the playoffs, but they will again lead the league in complaining about the officials.

  114. mnomalley says:

That was the first time this year that the Vikings beat a team that ended the season with a winning record.
    ###

You might want to rethink your comment. One of the teams the Vikings beat this season (and they had a winning record at that time too) is playing as I type this.

Philly earned the playoff spot by finishing 9 – 7, which is a winning record.

Now if two other teams that made the playoffs this year could have beaten the Eagles while playing at home (Bills and Packers), the Eagles would not have even made the playoffs.

  115. 1st ref: “I didn’t see him over the goal line, did you?” – (confers for five seconds)

2nd ref: “Nope, not really”. “OK let’s call it a touchdown then”. Huh?

  116. There’s been a lot of talk on here about Kirk Cousin’s redemption after getting so many monkeys off his back today.
And why not, obvious this one single win surely outweighs failure after failure he’s stacked up over the course of a mediocre career.

And now that Kirk is finally fixed, I think Spielman should get into extension talks with his agent immediately.
What do you think, another 3 years for say 105 million?
Seems about right for a bonafide playoff winning QB in Minnesota. Right?

    That’s what children do.

  118. What would be worse, being eliminated by Keenum, or eliminated by Cousins? Who could we ask?

  119. now we won’t have to hear about Sean Peyton the ‘Genius’ and Drew Brees the most accurate passer of all time for the rest of the playoffs. Boy does that tiresome…..

I’d love to see by some strange twist, MINN go into GB and win the NFC Championship just to see the Aaron do the Eli Manning whine-n-moan, crybaby loser act he’s become so good at

  120. Boy was I wrong. I had told a few people that it felt like the Denny Green 41-0 playoff loss to the Giants coming on. I also said that while Hunter is almost a physical twin to Viking legend Carl Eller and has some great sack numbers, the thing he lacked was making big plays in big games like Eller. He showed me I was wrong on that one too.

  121. Apparently Kirk Cousins isn’t even considered a top 12 QB among the 12 playoff teams in this year’s postseason. Can’t wait to hear the excuses from those experts.

Can’t win a division game until you make it. Did New Orleans win a division game this year?

  129. I did not have any hope that the Vikings would win. They overcame the stupid mistakes that they make, Smith, arguably the best player on defense, peeks into the backfield and fails to defend a huge pass play, etc….This was a way more meaningful win then the Minneapolis Miracle.

Kind of ironic you seem to routinely do that. Stating Vikings fans guaranteed super bowl wins with Kirk? How many hundred, yes hundred, times did you do that last year while weeping about underperforming Aaron. But you conveniently hide behind the teachers skirt and cry when the same happens to you. Neither is admirable but a fight picker and a crybaby are about the same and you good sir fall into both categories depending on the day.

They have drafted excellently the last several seasons and GM Lynch and his football knowledge have only amped up their potential. Garoppolo shines in that offense and there really are no weak spots anywhere.

The Purple are the 6th seed that nobody wants to play. 2 key CB’s are out & Drew Brees is still made to look pedestrian, at home & in the SuperDome.

Vikings managed their game-plan to a T & overcame an early turnover as well as very dumb drive-killing penalties. If Theilen does not make a few bone-headed plays early, this game likely does not go into OT.

  158. I was at the game. Though my team had plenty of chances, and some of SP/DB’s decisions were head scratchers (having Drew attempt two bombs with the lead late in the first half instead of doing what we do best, driving down the field – one bomb gets picked and the Vikes drive for the go-ahead score, and not feeding Taysom the ball at will in the 4th when it was obvious the Vikings couldn’t stop him) the Vikings deserved to win. Tip of the cap to them. Be ready to be even more physical against the Niners – but their defense can be had, as we demonstrated in December. Hope it’s a great game. Kirk deserves credit for making the tough throws when he needed to Sunday.
